Evelyn eagerly accepted the platter. The fish looked better than anything she had eaten in months, if not years, and she felt her mouth begin to water. She snatched up a smaller piece and shoved it in her mouth. She groaned and grabbed another piece almost before she swallowed the first. The texture was fantastic--not too chewy or mushy--and the flavor mild and lightly salty. She could have cried.
"This is so good. Thank you so much," she mumbled and ate another piece.
Mortimer, the heathen, had already eaten his and now lumbered over. Luckily he seemed sated and merely curled around Evelyn, letting her rest against his side while she ate. She smiled and settled against him. It was amazing what good food and good company could do one one's mood.
Hada smiled as Evelyn happily stuffed her face with the fish. Her ancient heart became filled with joy and accomplishment, thus was the very reason she wished to help this girl.
That aside, this was the perfect time to break her primitive speech so she may have regular conversation. Hopefully this transitions well with this person...
"Hmm-hmm..." the young woman beamed from ear to ear, her deep and gentle voice rung clear of a Nohrian accent, "You're very welcome, dear traveler. It is a privilege for a humble fisherman to serve another person with their craft." She got up and pulled some sticks aside to hang some pieces of the fish over the fire.

Evelyn choked on her piece of fish. What? Whaaaaaat? She pounded on her chest for a few second, trying to dislodge the fish from her windpipe. She could speak just fine this whole time?! She ducked her head and tried to muffle her coughing. And she had thought she'd been doing so good at not embarrassing herself, too...
Once she could breathe normally again, she asked "So you're a fisherman?" That was an intelligent question, right? Not weird at all? "Do you always fish here?"
Hada almost could've said that the alteration of her speaking abilities went well, that is, if it weren't for Evelyn's choking fit. Were it not for her sense of morality, Hada may have guffawed over the fact.
"My, my... are you alright?" said she, her hand was held out toward Evelyn with a concerned look on her face. When it seemed she had recovered, Hada breathed a sigh of relief, "... Ah, yes. If it hasn't been guessed already, I am indeed a fisherman. However, I am not only a fisherman, but an itinerant. I am always seeking new fishing locations to test out my skill in spear-fishing." Her head nudged toward the spear that was slung on her backside, "It's a difficult, but awfully rewarding method!"
She scratched the back of her head, "Hmmm... but I must give a formal introduction. My actual name is Hadassah, the itinerant spear-fisher." She bowed gently with a small twirl of her hand toward her abdomen, "And... Evelyn, correct? Fancy yourself a skilled wyvern rider?"
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Oh, wow, her speech was so elegant. Evelyn felt a bit like she should sit up straighter, and had to remind herself that this was the same woman she caught eating a raw fish with her face. She probably didn't care if Evelyn's posture was a little suspect.
It was still a difficult impulse to quash.
"Hadassah is a beautiful name," Evelyn said, because that was easier than talking about her middling successes as a wyvern rider. She glanced over at Mortimer only to realize the wyvern had gone to sleep. She smiled and reached out to stroke his head. Times liek these, she couldn't imagine why anyone found wyverns scary. "I think we're too knew to really be skilled yet, but we get by alright. It's been slow going, but we're managing," she said. That was probably the fairest assessment she could make. Slow going, but going forward all the same.
"You're too kind, Evelyn," Hadassah smiled, she reached down to pick up a few strips of meat to hang on branches a few feet over the fire. Those would be good snacking for later.
After she had hung up a sufficient number, she plopped back down into a criss-cross sitting style and pulled her spear around to her front. It was a spear with the end polished down to a sharp point, yet the end of it was slightly chipped.
Hadassah glanced around her surroundings and reached for a smooth stone on her side, then began rubbing the point gently with the bottom of her palm against the shaft.
"Ahh... new at your vocation?" she repeated, her head bobbed up and down, "Well, I hope my little performance today gives you some ideas on surviving out here... not the, ah, cavewoman behavior, but more on the tactical side of preparing meals. Maybe you might impress your future partner one day. Fuhohoho..."
Her eyes wandered back to the sleeping wyvern, "Permit me a question, rider. Your wyvern, where did you two meet?"
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn smiled as Hadassah talked. Ideas for survival indeed. At the very least, cooking her food on a nice flat rock like Hada had would make her less likely to accidentally set it on fire. It would be nice to eat some meat that was more food than charcoal in the future.
But then the second half of the statement clicked in her mind. "Partner...?" she said, more to herself than Hada. Mortimer was already the best partner she could ask- Oh. Oh! Her cheeks flushed and she ducked her head. "Oh, um, I... I don't know about that..." she muttered. She tried to shove another piece of fish in her mouth only to realize that she had already eaten it all. She only barely contained the tiny, dismayed whine that crawled up her throat. So good, and gone so fast.
Mortimer, as always, was much easier for her to talk about, and she perked up at the question. Without conscious thought, she began to stroke his head between his horns as he slept. "I was out for a walk in the woods outside of my old school when I stumbled across him--" Literally. She hadn't been watching the ground and had tripped over the baby wyvern. It had been embarrassing for the both of them. "--He was the size of a large dog back then, probably only a few months old. No parent ever came back for him, so I started to care for him in secret. We've been together ever since."
Hadassah was tempted to tease her further of her embarrassment, but she was pressed to hear their story.
Ah... so Mortimer was an abandoned fledgling with no clear background. Hadassah was prepared for questions of morality if the situation was different, yet it was all a matter of... fate. Yes, it was fate that Evelyn and Mortimer had met had met, just as it was fate for them to meet her at this day and age. What a beautiful concept!
"I ponder how you managed to hide him, given his proportions," the woman chuckled, "Given his size now, I imagine concealing him from being discovered by other people was quite the challenge." The culture of Nohrians was a mysterious one to her, after all. What would other people have done to the wyvern should another person have found him, and not Evelyn?
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn smirked a little. It was a surprisingly impish expression for someone usually concerned about bothering people by sneezing too loudly. "We weren't technically supposed to be in the woods at all," she confessed. It was why she had liked being in them to begin with. She could read or practice in peace without people frowning at her and sighing in disappointment just far enough away they could convince themselves she couldn't hear. "Besides, real Nohrian forests are so dark and forbidding anyway, no one could ever get close enough to get a good look at him, and when they heard him they thought he was a Faceless or something. Half of my class was convinced the woods were haunted for most of the last two years."
The little smirk died away after a moment though. "That was still before he got full grown, though. Someone caught him flying over the trees and it wasn't safe for him anymore." She swallowed and squared her shoulders against an opponent only she could see. "So we left."
So this was a girl who was fine with breaking the rules, and possibly the norm. Evelyn was different from most Nohrians.
She was trustworthy.
"... Heh," Hadassah simpered, she lay her spear down on her side and leaned her face on her hand, "I see... hehe, you really remind me of myself back when I was a child." She scratched behind her visibly pointed ear, "... So, given that. You see your wyvern as your lifelong partner, rather than a pet or servant. You were willing to hide him away rather than report him to proper authorities... a courageous and bold thing, mind you, especially in the face of the Nohrian government!"
The woman stood up and bowed gently to the rider, "... I dare say this, on behalf of his parents and myself, I thank you for taking care of one of my kin."
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn's face turned scarlet, starting with her cheeks and growing outward until her entire face to the tip of her ears was flushed a brilliant red. Her eyes dropped to her lap, and she wiggled in place, embarassed by the praise and unsure of how to respond to it. "It- It was nothing," she said. And it wasn't, to her. How could anyone sacrifice something as innocent as Mortimer for their own convenience.
But then, someone about Hadassah's next statement seemed off to her. "Kin...?" she said and finally looked back at the other woman. And this time, she really looked. Her hair was an unusual color, true, and her eyes, and of course her ears, but these could all be features of an elf, surely? Unusual, but not unheard of. And yet, elves certainly couldn't be considered the kin of dragons, the only ones who could were the- "Manakete. You're a manakete."
She ducked her head again, feeling suddenly very foolish for no real reason. "I didn't realize- I'm sorry," she said, and tucked her hair behind her ear. She swallowed, gathering her resolve, and forced herself to look back up. "Thank you, or, you're welcome, I guess? But, I didn't- there really wasn't-" She exhaled harshly, frustrated with herself, and tried again, "It was the right thing to do. There's no need to thank me for taking care of Mortimer when I couldn't have done anything else."
Hadassah let out a chuckle, "Yes, it was the best thing for you to do. I'm thoroughly pleased by it." She sat back down and leaned against a rock, "Please relax! I'd like us to carry on with our conversation."
But... would that be a difficult thing for Evelyn given this new information? A manakete was also considered a part of the draconic family, so perhaps it was as if she was actually speaking to a dragon... is that right? This was all speculation of course, as Hadassah seldom disclosed information on her own race. This was foreign soil to her in the world of socialization.
"I'm sure you have some questions. Please feel free to ask them."
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn forced her shoulders to relax and slumped against Mortimer. He grumbled a little in his sleep and curled closer, which brought a faint smile to her lips. She scrubbed at her face and chuckled. "Sorry, I got all worked up there, didn't I?"
Questions? Her mind felt blank all of a sudden. The handful of random questions that slowly surfaced in her mind felt too personal. 'What was it like to live thousands of years' was the first one to come to mind, but how could anyone answer that? It seemed so sad, or at least it did to her. No, she's like to ask something happier, something more like: "What's the most incredible thing you've ever seen? I mean, you've been around a long time, right? So what stands out?"
Ooh. This was a very good question, and one that she would have to give some serious thought. The most incredible thing she's ever seen... what would that be? Physical environments proved themselves to be the most spellbinding on the right moments, and she's had more than a few of those as a wanderer. Despite that, there was more to life than just the physical, as that faded away all to quickly. No, the most incredible things were ones she remembered and held dear for herself, something that no one else would understand unless they had experienced it themselves.
... All the same, Hadassah wouldn't allow Evelyn's question to go unanswered.
"The most incredible thing..." she said, tucking her hair behind her ear, "... the most incredible thing that I've seen is neither sights, smells, or sounds... the hearts of changed people. That is what is incredible to me. The hardest heart is bound to soften, be it from tender whispers of love and kindness of a fellow human, to trials that the gods themselves had pushed upon an unbelieving soul. A man who is counseled by wise men reaps wisdom, but foolish gossip only leads down a road of self-destruction."
Hadassah shrugged her shoulders, "Otherwise, the ocean has always existed and yielded a lot of good fish to eat. That's also incredible."
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn drew her knees up to her chest as she listened. The hearts of changed people, huh? That had a nice ring to it. She supposed if you had a lot of time, you would get to see many people mature and grow. She wondered in a vague way what HAdassah would think of her if they met again in thirty years. Would her heart have changed for the better, or the worse?
But all serious thoughts fled at the Manakete's addendum. Evelyn burst into startled giggles, and her hands flew to her face in an attempt to muffle the sound. She could do nothing about the way her body shoot, and Mortimer lifted his head in sleepy confusion at her trembling.
"Sorry, Morty, sorry," she gasped, once she had gotten control of herself. She patted his nose before grinning back at Hadassah. "Both excellent answers," she said before releasing one final, muffled laugh.
She bit her lip and looked down at her lap where she interlaced her fingers. After a moment, she said, "I don't think I have any questions, really, but I wanted to say thank you. Thanks for sitting here and talking with me, and for sharing your fish, and just for being pleasant company. It's been a very nice afternoon, after a long series of not so nice ones. I really appreciate it."
