Breathing was essential for mortals. It encapsulated their existence. If there was no air, there was no life. A creature that drifts beneath the waters is robbed of such a necessity.
Unless one takes a deep breath.
A shadowed figure silently glided beneath the surface of the lake, far into the deep end where the fish made their home. The stranger's eyes, accustom to such dark conditions, looked for any sign of reflected light upon glistening scales.
A split-second sheen as all it takes.
The figure hovered above the quiet seabed.
Suddenly, a glint. A long limb struck it at high speed and was raised to the light. A fattened, shimmering, bleeding fish twitched on the end.
The figure submerged, revealing a youthful, feminine figure with a spear.
"Baaah," she gasped as she held the spear into the air.
The fish was quite large! This would certainly make a decent meal!
The excited girl swam toward the shore and climbed onto it, then removed the fish from the spear. She took the fish by the tail and slammed it down on a rock.

"If I have to spend one more night out here, I'm going to fall on my axe," Evelyn said, rubbing her back. She missed beds, and food she didn't have to gut and clean herself, and clean, reliable drinking water, and-
Next to her, Mortimer made a clicking noise and Evelyn felt instantly guilty for her uncharitable thoughts. This was all worth it, she reminded herself, and reached over to rub his neck. The forest was too dense for him to fly, so he was walking next to her as they made their way from their campsite toward the next town. He...actually looked like a chicken, or maybe a duck waddling along next to her. How undignified, she thought and cracked a smile despite herself.
As they walked on, the trees began to thin out and she noticed a lake in the distance. Well, that would take care of the water issue. She tapped Mortimer twice on the side and began to jog toward the lake. "Fresh water, fresh water, fresh water," she chanted as Mortimer awkwardly loped after her.
She was nearly to the lakeside when she realized they weren't alone. She skidded to a stop and stared at the woman who had been eating a raw fish by the lakeshore. "Oh, um, sorry for disturbing you," she said, just as Mortimer finally crashed into the clearing.
The young woman turned her torso slowly as she looked at the new stranger with a mouthful of fish flesh. Her companion, a wyvern, had also appeared.
Oh? A wyvern? She swallowed the flesh in her mouth and began walking on all fours in their direction.
"Hmmm?" she hummed, her eyes were glued on the wyvern, "Hmmmmmmmm?"
How curious... was this woman a Nohrian wyvern rider? This was a first.
The young woman looked at the fish in her mouth, and back to the wyvern. With a smile, she took the fish from her mouth and held it out to the lesser dragon to eat. Evelyn

Evelyn watched in confusion as the woman approached them on all fours. That was... odd. She took a half-step back and, sensing her unease, Mortimer shuffled in front of her. He lowered his head and spread his wings slightly. Not aggressive yet, but cautious.
When the woman held forth his fish, Mortimer cocked his head and trilled. He sniffed it, and smelling nothing wrong, snatched it out of her hands. He tossed his head up and with a single bite swallowed the rest of the fish whole.
Deciding that this was clearly a nice person for giving him such a good fish, Mortimer winched his wings back in and shuffled off to the side again. He then swung around and booped Evelyn on the forehead with his nose, startling her.
"Oh, well then, I guess you check out," Evelyn said, bemused, as Mortimer turned around to look at the strange woman once more. "This is Mortimer, and I'm Evelyn."
The young woman let out a cheery giggle as the wyvern took the fish. What a magnificent creature!
Now, the other... how shall she approach this one? The human wasn't particularly of bad taste...
"Hmmm..." the woman hummed, "Mmmmmmm..." Should she begin with a few words? Perhaps she shall attempt to mislead her into thinking she was a wild girl? That was always fun to do... yes! She has decided to do that.
"Mmmm... Hada," she said with a little accent, "Hada. Mmmmmm..." She motioned to herself, "Me, Hada. Fish? Hmm?" Now she pointed at the lake behind her. Evelyn

What an unusual accent, Evelyn thought. She must not be from around here. Is she Hoshidan? Would it be rude to ask? "It's nice to meet you, Hada," she said instead. Probably best to err on the side of caution.
She followed Hada's gesture and looked at the lake. "Fish...? Oh, no, thank you. I ate just a little while ago." More like hours ago, but she would rather go hungry than eat raw fish. Come to think of it, wasn't that supposed to be a popular dish in Hoshido? How... disgusting. "But I did need water!"
To accentuate her point, she turned and began to dig through the saddle bag strapped to Mortimer. The wyvern grumbled a little, but obligingly held his wing out the way until she pulled her two anemic water skins from the bag. "Do you mind if I...?" she said, and gestured at the lake with the water skins.
Hada knew what those were at a glance. Water sacks! Awfully useful things in a desert.
"Mmm," the young woman tilted her head to the side, "Hmmmmmmm..." She withdrew herself toward the edge of the water and slid into the water, then continued moving back until her eyes were just above water level. This was a comfortable position, as she may easily disappear to catch more fish for her guest, not that this lake was her home by any means. If she felt like it, she could also reveal some more... primitive means of cooking.
That's it! More fish. Hada's head disappeared beneath the water. Evelyn

Evelyn watched curiously as Hada wandered back into the lake, right up until the other woman's head vanished beneath the surface of the water. "I guess that's a yes...?" she said. She turned to mortimer for reassurance, only to find her wyvern had lumbered the rest of the way to the lake and was now peacefully drinking from the water's edge.
Deciding to follow Mortimer's lead, she also crouched down next to the lake and began to fill her water skins. From this angle, she could make out a dark shape she assumed was Hada moving under the water. "I wonder what's she doing down there," she said, capping one skin before she started to fill the other.
Gathering fish more would be a cinch. Years of swimming gave her nearly limitless stamina and her perfect form guaranteed the swiftest, if not the most elegant, method of swimming. She would seek out the larger fish that existed beneath the surface as a gift to her new acquaintance.
Hada stopped midway, her body completely froze in place. There it was: a single large fish upon the lakebed, bigger than the rest! Such quarry would yield enough flesh for the three of them.
In a little while, the woman emerged with her back to the land. She dragged a large fish by its jaws, her spear stuck between its eyes. It was four feet wide, its mouth large enough to swallow her head.
"Fish!" she exclaimed cheerfully, "Hmmm?" She sat down and began carving at the flesh, rather than eating it like she had the other one. If Evelyn knew how to build a fire, maybe she could stomach it.

Evelyn startled as the woman finally emerged from the lake carrying the biggest fish Evelyn had seen since she had left her home in Windmire. She stared, slack-jawed, as Hada cheerfully dumped it on the bank and began to skin it. "Yes, fish," she replied, too stunned to be embarrassed about the inanity of the statement.
Mortimer wandered over the Hada to sniff hopefully at the fish, and the action jolted Evelyn back to herself. "Don't pester her," she said, which was enough to make the wyvern back off a bit even if he did snort in displeasure.
Evelyn craned her neck skyward and tried to estimate the time. It was probably getting close to lunchtime, and Hada seemed to be preparing this fish instead of eating it raw, and she had seemed to be offering to share... Her stomach growled, voicing its own thoughts in the matter, and Evelyn was settled.
"I'll get some firewood," she said and wandered over to the treeline. She would keep in eyesight, though. It would be just her luck to run into bandits while her guard was down and Mortimer was too busy salivating over a fish as big as his head to notice she was in trouble.
Luckily, there were plenty of dry, brittle branches along the treeline. They wouldn't make a very big fire, but hopefully it would be big enough to get most of the fish cooked.
She paused and looked between her armful of sticks and the massive fish. Well, maybe if they cut it up first.
Good, good, Evelyn had the right idea. When the rider had gone a little further away, Hada scanned the lake side. There sat a decently-sized stone with a flat top, and as such would be an excellent cooking surface. Later on, she could also hang up pieces of the fillet to smoke and preserve the rest to make smoked fish jerky for days! Hada wouldn't have it any other way.
With a small knife she pulled from her thigh, Hada separated the fish by segments. A large part of the right side of the fish would be used to feed the wyvern while the rest would go to them. The tail and fins would be crisped up on the fire until they were brittle enough to be eaten, and the bones and head she could make a stock with. The innards would be perfect casual fishing bait for other aquatic creatures. The eyes and brain were a delicacy that she was taught to save for last. There was no room for waste!
The head comes off first. Meat chunks here, the bones there, innards here... yes, yes, this is all coming apart nicely.
The fish was completely dismantled from the head to the tail. All there was left to do was clean up and start the fire. Hada rose from her spot and washed herself of the fish's blood, then collected the large rock she intended to use for frying. She piled the meat they would be cooking onto it, then brought it over to Evelyn.
"Fish!" Hada exclaimed as she put the stone down by the rider.

Since leaving the academy, Evelyn had to learn a lot of survival skills in a short amount of time. Some came to her easier than others. For instance, she was glad Hada hadn't asked her to clean the fish, because she still puked about one in four times. By comparison, firestarting was a lot easier, but she still found herself wishing for a Fimbulvetr tome as she tried to light the kindling with her flint.
After an agonizing ten minutes, her leaves finally caught, and she began adding small sticks and then gradually larger ones until she had a serviceable fire. She was actually feeling quite proud of herself when Hadassah came over with the meat piled on a large, flat rock. Back home, she had never been a particularly big fan of fish, but she found herself incredibly excited as she looked over the cuts of meat.
"Is there anything else I can do to help?" she asked.
Anything else? This was good enough, although Hada was found wanting of a pot to boil the bones in.
That aside, Evelyn probably wouldn't appreciate it if the meat got on the dirt floor, thus she approached a tree and pulled off a large chunk of bark. A little rinse in the lake, and a platter was easily made for use. Hada transferred the meat onto the bark platter, then slid the rock closer to the fire for it to begin the heating process.
"Hm!" she exclaimed as she aggressively pointed to the wood Evelyn had procured, then motioned back to the fire, "Hm." A single log should suffice for a cooking fire through the generated embers.
What else... ah, yes. Mortimer's food. Hada took the large, semi-cut portion of the fish from the chunk pile and ran over to the wyvern. She held it out to the creature, her eyes glistening with delight.
Odd rhythm: Learned at level 1 If a unit equipped with this skill has their turn set during an odd number in the turn order, they get +10 to their HIT and the enemy gets -10 to their HIT.
Evelyn watched thoughtfully as Hada continued her preparations. Perhaps she should be taking notes? So far her culinary creations had been...serviceable...but this looked way more like cooking than her usual method of sticking things in the fire until they were probably cooked enough to not make her sick.
She startled when Haha addressed her. "What?" she said, looking between Hada and the fire several times before it clicked. "Oh! Um, just a second," she said and scrambled to put an actual log on the fire.
Mortimer, who had been sulking by the lakeside while the two women worked, perked up as Hadassah approached. He trilled, pleased, and gingerly took the hunk of meat before he promptly dropped it and began to dig in. Unlike his silly master, he had no such concerns about eating his food off the dirt.
"Heeee!" Hada squealed. She clapped her hands as the wyvern took the meat, then ran back over to Evelyn.
After she had plopped down beside the rider, Hada slid a finger across the fish meat to pick up some moisture, then flicked it at the flat stone by the fire.
*Sss!*
"Aha!" she cheered, she blew any embers off of the stone, and then begun laying the fish down on it. A glorious sizzling sound filled the air, along with the mouth-watering aroma of frying fish. Two sticks served as handling utensils to flip the fishes over, and given the light density of the fish meat, it wouldn't be long for them to begin eating. Sure enough, one of the fish morsels was pulled toward the cooler part of the cooking stone and placed back onto the bark platter. The piece of fish was a golden brown color on the seared ends, with darker tints toward the edges.
Hada sampled the fish and savored the flavor. It was slightly smoky given method of cooking, but the seared sides were crisp and the meat was moist. The flavor was fresh and every bit delicious for her tastes!
With a wide, satisfied smile, Hada pulled another fillet from the cooking stone on the bark platter and held it to Evelyn.
