"That's good, Harold. Cut out the heart. Show everyone." "Yuck." "Whoa." "Wow." "You understand what the research folks go through now?" "Yeah, this is pretty grisly." "You're not feeling weak, are you?" "No way! I'm not that disgusted with this!" "Maybe they would consider you then."
There was a gentle gasp as the dark mage awoke to the light.
"Wha-what? What happened?" she stuttered as she hugged herself tightly. Her head lifted to Amethyst, "Did... did I pass out?"

Amethyst hummed and nodded, pulling the light away and letting it scatter. “You're fine. It seems like things got too much for you. It's not anyone's fault that such a shock got to you. It might be a set back, but it's a good sign. You shouldn't feel nothing when you see that sort of thing. But you also can't let it rule you. Take a minute or two before trying to get up,” she advised. “We don't want you to get another blood rush and fall down again, do we?”
"But... I must get used to this," Agatha mumbled, she curled her legs inward, "... If... if I don't, I'll be put in the military to fight the Hoshidans... and I can't do it. I just can't..." The girl began to sniffle quietly. "I... I don't want to fight..."
"So, uh, are we putting any of this back, Ms. Brandt?" "Yes, please do. See to it that you put everything back the way they were, and we shall proceed." "Er... alright..." "Where does this go again?" "Uhh..."
As the other dark mages fumbled with internal organs, Ursula approached Amethyst and Agatha with her hands folded before her, "I overheard you. It is every citizen's duty to render service to the king. As you are the only means of useful service to the king, you must learn to deaden such feelings."
"But... but Ms. Brandt..."
"I will give you a small hope," interrupted the witch, "Dark mages are not like soldiers who are sent to the front line. We are the brightest minds Nohr has to offer. If you study well, then perhaps you won't have to go to battle unless the battle comes to us. Understand?"
The dark mage's face brightened at her words, "You... you really mean it?"
"I won't guarantee it," Ursula sighed, "But it's better than nothing." She glanced to the light mage, "Anything to add, assistant?"

If the battle came to Nohr Amethyst would certainly fight. It was the right thing to do, especially with rare talents to offer. She tried to think of a soothing statement to backup the witch, who offered a less than realistic offer. If they thought they were scared, maybe they should be told about how the enemy was more scared.
“Fighting...isn't the point of any conflict. The goal is winning. You can avoid many fights by being ready for them. I haven't met the enemy, but I know they are used to far softer lives than us. If you can paint the picture of a proud Nohrian mage in their mind, their own fear will cause many to scatter, a demonstration of the power even more, and at that point you have given them two chances, which is more generous than most…” She would personally give them as many chances as it took to get through, but that was part of why she wasn't a soldier. “Don’t forget with have mirrors for the body, but not the soul. There’s no way to tell what you can and can’t do if you put the work in. Maybe more work than your peers, maybe for less reward too, but you are more important to yourself than to anyone.”
Ursula’s eyelids closed halfway and she nodded slowly, “Mmm... yes. That is very deep, assistant. Very. Deep.”
“I see,” Agatha bobbed her head as well, “But I still don’t know...”
“You still have a dilemma,” the witch sighed, “You must choose one of the lesser evils. Whether you allow yourself to stomach seeing the grotesque or cause it is something you must decide soon. I will not provide the answer for you, Agatha. You have to decide.”
The dark mage glanced between the two of them and exhaled deeply, then proceeded to stand back up. “... I’ll... I’ll try to stomach the grotesque. I have to.”
“Good,” responded Ursula, “Then rejoin your fellow students. We will begin the resurrection phase shortly.”
“Yes, professor.” Thus, the dark mage steadily walked back to the dead Faceless.
The witch shifted her gaze back to Amethyst, “... Mirrors for the body, but not the soul, hm? One cannot help if they’re a little less ambitious than most of us.” Her arms folded one over the other, “I suppose I will commend you for sharing yourself.”

Amethyst hummed. Maybe religion was right for her, they loved the abstract as much as her. “I have lots of time for deep. Perhaps too much. I’m sure some would rather gossip, but the bigger picture matters. And it's certainly better than politics. I'm not too concerned about who our enemies are the moment and why. Our enemy can only be our enemy in relative terms anyway. I’d rather not get into the business of hating anyone.”
The way the witch spoke, as though there was an ‘us’ and a ‘them’, got her thinking. “Do you think there is something that separates us from them? I’d think even the poorest sod would have an ambition of some kind. It has to be more than dreams.”
T’would be a shame if I told her I was being sarcastic... I certainly have no time for such things. Especially not now.
They had only gone two feet ahead before Amethyst posed her question. Ursula stopped in her tracks and folded her arms.
“Dreams are dreams, assistant,” the witch uttered, she turned her head toward her to stare at her with one side of her face, “A poor sod can dream all he wants, but a poor sod who does nothing but dream is just a bum and a waste of material.” Her body turned so that she faced her full on, “But a poor sod who dreams and actually makes steps to make his dream a reality—no matter how whimsical or asinine it may be, can be a potential leader among the nation. As for myself...” she placed a hand on her chest, her visage showing a hint of passion, “I am the latter, and so nothing will prohibit me from achieving those ends.”
The subtle feeling disappeared, “What about you, assistant? What is your ambition?”

The idea they didn’t achieve because they didn’t work enough seemed simple and easy to swallow, but was it realistic? Surely if they actually wanted it they would make some attempt. Then again… “I think there is a difference between real ambitions and idle dreams, but I wouldn’t demean the later at all. Whatever suits them best. I don’t think what I want is possible, but that is why it is important to try. It's a little childish, you would probably say,” she admitted, nervously bring a hand under her hair to rub at her neck. “The only other person I know for sure felt the same is probably dead because of it. I want everyone to be a peace and get along. I owe too much to the kindness of others to hold a selfish dream.”
Then... she has no ambitions except for peace? Now that was painful to hear, especially due to how impossible it sounded.
Moreover, Ursula felt she was looking way too into it, but it sounded almost as if Amethyst called her selfish.
Whatever. Her opinion was to be honored.
“Then you should try uniting Nohr and Hoshido.” The words were not spoken in sarcasm, but they carried with them a certain dullness. The witch’s eyelids closed half-way, “That is possibly the highest form of peacemaking one could ever attempt, and in itself a lofty goal.” She resumed her approach to the dead Faceless and the dark mages.

Amethyst hummed and pretended to give it thought. It was obviously a response to blow her off. “It's something I can work for without having to step on anyone to get there. I think we are already closer than you think. It would just take the right person or events to gather momentum for a will already there. But peace is about more politics. There's a lot of smaller work to be done. As long as there are those that prey on others there can be no peace. A sailor's family left at home is not at peace when they worry a band of pirates might steal their income or even life. I want everyone to be loved and to protect everyone…” Amethyst didn't feel she was done. She had a whole speech in her on virtue, hope, justice and benevolence that would never see the rather dim light of the nohrian day...
“That is enough,” Ursula hissed, her ears burned in anger, “Desire peace as you wish, help whomever you want, yes, go on, implore the gods for a political savior or some freak accident that will unify the kingdoms through words.” Her expression became cruel as her hair began to blow in a fell wind, “There are no words to which our king will adhere to other than his own, and as a child and loyal servant of Nohr, I cannot align myself to any other master. His word is law, and his law are my methods.” She pointed at Amethyst aggressively as small tendrils of darkness pulsed across her hand, “My allegiance is unwavering, and if you desire to follow behind someone else who will bring your craving for peace, then you would be no more than a deserter of our great country. If you understand, assistant, then you will keep your opinions to yourself.”
The students behind the witch watched with growing interest.
Putting king before country wasn't something she liked to do. Maybe it was possible to have loyalty but not respect? How annoying to have to consider such an idea. Of course Ursula felt differently, she was a soldier, and she was tutor to a group of loyal dark mages. It really wasn't her aesthetic. Amethyst liked to maintain freedom, loyalty was an admirable trait, but also a chain that could pull away from the right thing to do. “I've not sworn anything to anyone…” She began to defend herself, awkwardly crossing one arm over her cheat and cradling her elbow. “But it's just a fantasy..like you say, it won't happen…I understand...”
“I certainly hope you understand... for your sake,” was the cold reply, “Now if there are no further interruptions, we have a Faceless to resurrect.”
Ursula came alongside the younger dark mages and studied the corpse of the headless Faceless, focus drawn toward the open chest. “... Hmm, yes... someone’s been studying anatomy.”
“That would be me,” a young fellow raised his hand with an ear-to-ear grin on his face. “I am really fascinated with organs, professor. Can we do this more often?”
The witch glanced at him and raised an eyebrow, “... As I am your temporary substitute, I am unsure of whether or not your designated teacher would bring you out to the field again. Nevertheless, I commend you for your studiousness.” She raised a hand over the corpse of the Faceless, “Now I shall show you the power of the darkness on fell creatures such as these. Do stand back, children.”
“Huh? I thought we were going to do that...”
“This is a skill for only the most experienced of dark mages. My role is to show you but a taste of the power that you may attain within your discipline. Now, observe.”
With the witch’s hand raised over the body of the Faceless, what appeared to be black, viscous liquid ran down her arm and began to pour itself into the open wound. The darkness, resonating with the fell beast, began to fill the chest and pull the skin and bones back together. Even then, the severed head of the Faceless reconnected, and the monster began to animate once again.
“Grrrr...” a guttural growl reverberated in its throat as it began to pull itself back onto its feet.
“Back,” Ursula commanded to the others, “Give it space. We will let it go back to its days of wandering until the king has need of it.“
The monster looked slothfully about the clearing in confusion, yet it eventually began to lumber off into the fog. As it left, Ursula once again addressed the students, “Never forget, students. Faceless are creatures of the dark, and they obey the darkness where they came from.”
If there was one thing Amethyst was jealous of when it came to dark mages, it was their weird sense of community. Community was something she had not felt in a long time. Some were eager to learn their art, others wanting to compare notes, other’s worried they might fall behind the pack. She did not have any friends she could engage with on such a level. It wasn’t so bad until it was rubbed in your face.
She idly twisted the skin on her held arm until she began to feel the slight burn. It made her feel better about what she witnessed. Watching it just get back up after all the abuse it had been given was more disturbing than watching it go down. Light was very useful, but it could not be used to raise the dead or anything so impressive to her knowledge. Maybe a sage held a staff powerful enough to do such a thing. Doing it on a real person would no doubt have far less pleasant results. But it was...objectively powerful and potent magic no matter how it made her feel.
