Amethyst frowned as she felt the air suddenly grow a little more serious. The fact she didn't know wouldn't be sufficient in explaining anything. No one put anything down to ignorance. It was probably the wrong time to make a joke about lightening up.
“A real egalitarian are you?” Amethyst asked with an incredulous look. Such a tough crowd would probably not appreciate the humour. “If I was castle bred I think my retinue would change your mind on how you would treat me. And I don't have patience to grind through years of holy rites. There is little I can say in my defence other than the obvious. Isn't that the danger of any practical lesson. The fact you can't be in full control is sort of the point. Would I be to blame if it had rained today? That'd change things too. It doesn't matter if the task is hard or impossible, if the boss says to do something you're meant to do it. A skilled teacher could probably still weave together a lesson from this. Cultivating the despair you feed on or something like that?”
The witch remained silent at the response Amethyst gave her, then a small, no, a wicked, ever-widening grin grew on her face.
"Hehe..." she began to chuckle, her tone becoming more unhinged as her volume began to lift, "Hehahaha. Ahahaha! Aaaahahahaha!"
Suddenly, an orb of darkness was flung from her wrist, crashing into the head of the fallen Faceless. In an instant, the head was removed, and landed on the ground a few feet away.
"Who cares about those things?" the witch hissed with a hostile glare, "No one below my station talks back to me like that. No one. NO ONE." Her arms became coated in living darkness, and her hair became undone as large strands of it began to fly in the air.

"Care?" the witch spat, another orb was tossed into the crowd of Faceless, causing a number of them to collapse, "Care! Do not speak such a word in regard to us! What good is that word with senseless fell beasts whose sole existence is to destroy?"
The woman's dark aura shook unsteadily as she stepped down into the clearing. The Faceless, sensing an overhanging darkness, began to dissipate from the place.
"Your concepts too naive, girl," she continued, her voice appeared to shift as her violet eyes began to glow, "Minions are pawns, pawns are disposable. Faceless do the king's bidding with no question, fear, or conscience. They are the perfect soldier, just as this one." Suddenly, her arms drooped to the side, her eyes glazed over, and a whole other voice emanated from the woman. "We've spoken for too long, light mage... now our puppet will do away with you. Won't you, Ursula? Hehehe..." Amethyst

Amethyst looked like she had taken an arrow through the gut at the offhand dismissal of her opinion. “Girl...? Too naive? It takes more strength to be optimistic than to force your dark thoughts onto others. Are we any better than fell beasts if we treat them that way? They exist to do as they are told and yet we order them to destroy. Our creations are a reflection of us. They must be more easily tamed than fierce wyverns, who can be put to good with the right mind.”
The nature and behaviour of the speaker began to change, and she soon felt she was speaking to a vessel of a greater power. That pseudo-mysterious omnipotent voice was likely far more fragile than her spirit. “I have questions still, if you would answer...but as you are the challenger, you get to decide when and if this needless engagement occurs.” To attack preemptively would to be undermine her words. She had no need to throw her power around to justify its existence.
"So, the light mage thinks herself a philosopher!" growled the disembodied voice, "You say way too many words! I will never answer any of your questions! DIIIIIE!" The puppet began to float off the ground by way of the darkness, and her arms drew back.
However, the voice let out a desperate cry as the mass of darkness began to disintegrate, absorbed back into its host. In a moment, the light in the witch's eyes returned, and she pulled a handkerchief from her back pocket, daintily cleaning her lips of the substance that left her mouth.
"... Disgusting," she sighed with a shake of her head, "I let myself masquerade as me for one day, and this is what happens." Her eyes turned to Amethyst, "... So, what happened so that I can properly punish myself?" Amethyst
A clenched fist by Amethyst’s side relaxed as the situation defused slightly. That was good. The darkness made a terrible conversation partner not willing to listen to her at all. Plenty had not, but it was normally for some understandable reason like her age, rather than pure ignorance. She felt a terrible emotional sting about not being able to resolve the situation herself. But admitting that was the case would mean she would be justified in thinking she was useless. Not pleasant. It wouldn’t work.
“You musn’t punish yourself, least certainly of all for something that only happened because of me and some misfortune. I couldn’t allow it and feel I was doing the right thing. You didn’t even do anything…” She glanced at the Faceless as she walked to its severed head. “Too bad. These woods have not made a favourable impression though...” Places that should be avoided would always draw weirdos she felt she could now say.
Ursula folded her arms and frowned, "The right thing, hm?" She followed Amethyst with her eyes, "That's noble of you, girl, but I wouldn't have the foggiest thought of helping someone as mentally challenged as I am. My own students can hardly keep up with lessons I've personally tailored to their... needs."
The witch moved to the headless body of the Faceless and placed a hand on her chin. "Hmm... this is a perfectly good specimen for dissecting, that much I will merit on your efforts. Do consider dropping light magic and become a good dark mage for our king one day."

Girl? Again? Whatever...it didn't matter. “It's not about being noble. It's as much for my own selfish reasons as it is out of care. I do hope you can find a way. I'm not qualified to help with that. I’m not really qualified for much.”
Amethyst would happily take credit for the dead Faceless she had selected. She would have preferred to have returned it to the wild like any other animal, such as a kitsune, but what happened happened. “You can keep it, my treat…” She had seen enough of them for one day.
The light mage wasn't surprised that the recommendation came that she respecialise. “I might do that one day, but I think there are other ways to help in the meantime. I'm really more use to the kingdom like this, even if no one important takes notice. I’d also need to find someone to keep the candle burning before I could. Letting it die for my own gain wouldn't be respectful. I hear it is hard to control dark magic too, light is really obedient and does what you want it to do…” She rubbed the back of her head, as she dug deep for excuses, avoiding the most shallow reason.
"The thought counts," Ursula shrugged her shoulders. She tapped the side of her temple gently, then proceeded to stand by the mouth of the clearing. "Whether you decide to or not is up to you. Our king is... not an outgoing man as far as I know."
"Professor Brandt!" a voice called from afar, "Where are you?"
"Hmph," the witch mumbled, "You may stay for the next lesson, light mage, that is if you can stomach it."

Amethyst hadn't assumed she could even be worthy of attention, not like it mattered. It was having good intent that was important to her. The chance to make the biggest possible difference was an interesting thought. “I don’t know much about our king, but those that talk less normally have the most well considered thoughts. Having meritorious close company is also a mark of greatness. The great attract the great.”
The light mage trailed behind just a little, hesitant and with good reason. She was going to be the odd one out in the class no doubt. It didn’t matter. She resolved herself to the fact it might be hard to watch. Now was really the best time after everything else. “If there is something to learn, It’s worth sitting through. I’m here and not wasting away at some chapel after all, right?”
Ursula smirked at her response, "For a light mage, you're rather agreeable... we may even get along just fine."
Soon enough, six dark mages had appeared from the fog.
"Over here," said a male mage. At the sight of the headless Faceless, the dark mages let out a discomforted gasp. "Ms. Brandt, did you do this?"
"Mmm, well," the witch folded her arms, "I simply dispatched the creature. The one who managed to catch it was..." her eyes shifted to Amethyst, "... my assistant. What of your progress?"
The young mages appeared to squirm in their places, "... Uh... we... we couldn't find any of them. It was too foggy to see anything."
Ursula glowered in disappointment, "As you are dark mages, you need to utilize the darkness inside of you to locate other creatures manifested by the same darkness. It a natural thing for those who have the Shadow Gift. Otherwise, all you are are simple mages who cannot even use dark magic."
"Yes, Ms. Brandt..." was the reply in unison.
"Come now," she continued, "Stand around this Faceless. We will be dissecting it to examine what it is made of, then we will reanimate it using darkness." She glanced to Amethyst, "I recommend you stand a little away. They are still juvenile mages and will likely make a mess of things."

“I don’t think we’re known for being disagreeable.”
It wasn’t a lie to say that she had had assisted in the set up of this lesson. Still, it would have been nice to have the word glamorous in there somewhere. The fact the students were married to the idea of only using their eyes to search, showed a lack of imagination. Maybe when they were informed of the possibilities they would open up? “Simple…” She pouted. That was like being a regular mage was a bad thing.
What kind of magic were they doing that was going to get messy? Amethyst still took the advice, wanting to be outside of the splash of whatever might go wrong and explode. Inky dark magic stuff wasn't pleasant. She tried to stand with authority, like she had seen foremen with back home, watching closely the method that would be used and its safety.
Ursula lifted a hand toward the headless Faceless, allowing a tendril of darkness to reach out and touch the fallen creature in the middle of its chest. Naturally, some of the students began to squirm in anticipation of what came next.
"... Hah," the witch smirked, "Do not be squeamish now. If you are placed in the research division away from the front lines, expect that you will have to deal with procuring parts or organs that our superiors will require."
After a short pause, the chest was opened, and immediately one of the students swooned and collapsed to the ground.
"A... Agatha..." one of the mages murmured nervously. However, none of the students attempted to help her.
Ursula let out a sigh, "The rest of you who did not faint, study the wound I opened... but Assistant Amethyst." She glanced to the light mage and motioned her hand to the unconscious dark mage, "I leave this one in your charge. Move her someplace else, take her home, whatever it is that kind people do to help the faint-hearted."

Amethyst nodded. “Yes, Ms. Brandt.” She knew better than to undermine authority in front of those under it. Truth be told the grisly details were beyond her desire to know. Morbid curiosity only went so far. She'd just read the lab notes later.
Fainting was new, but she had encountered the unconscious before, but they were often inebriated in some fashion. From behind the unconscious dark mage, she sat her up and lifted her up, using the underarm for support. Amethyst set them down not to far away, so they could seem familiar people if they awoke. As a first treatment, she cast a light and waved it over the unconscious mage’s eyes to see if it would cause them to stir. “Agatha..." She hummed gently, probing for a response.
