The Cruel and the Spiteful An Open featuring Ursula Von Brandt In the murk of the forest...
Faceless are not particularly interested in Nohrians due to them being our allies. Furthermore, no one is ever allowed into the factory from which they are produced, and neither is there any way to find out exactly where they come from. There is likely some terribly and highly immoral secret involved, and while I am forbidden by the higher ups to not question the conception of such beasts, I am immensely curious as to how they managed to put such abominations together... if they are put together at all.
The thought of Faceless is an oxymoron. They wear masks to hide a hideous, ogre-like face. Indeed, I have seen their bare faces when they were allied with my unit to assault a Hoshidan stronghold. I even asked my master why they were called Faceless in the first place. The answer was a burning thumb poke to the back of the head, telling me I should never ask such a stupid thing again. Even so, my curiosity has not been sated, and I will not stop my personal investigation until then.
For now, I have tasked some students of mine to see if they can lure a Faceless to this location. I admit, I never told them that Faceless will become hostile at non-natives. If there are any in the group, the Faceless will surely chase after them and attempted to kill them with beast-like instinct.
It is a morbid thought, but perhaps this will remain a clandestine method of removing spies from our company.
End Thought Journal.
A woman of certain age sat on a handkerchief draped across a log, with her hands folded elegantly over her lap. Her body was concealed in a cloak, and her head was hidden beneath a hood with silvery trimming. Any theoretical civilian who would look upon her would attempt to go down a different side of the street, and for good reason. Her eyes appeared to glow a certain shade of dusky lilac, unveiling a sensation of maleficent intention.
Suddenly, the head of the woman turned up at the sound of weighted footsteps, and her gaze shifted into the fog whence the noise came from.
A large shadow, perhaps thirty feet in height, walked perhaps a dozen yards from her position. The very ground vibrated gently at each one of its stomps. The humongous figure stopped briefly and motioned as if it was looking around with its head.
That one is quite large, mused the woman, Perhaps they are practically blind because of the fog?
As the thought crossed her mind, the creature grunted gently, then began to tramp away from the woman.
A gentle sigh of relief escaped her. The weight of such a monster must be quite tremendous, and if it so much as stepped on her, she would become flatter than a pancake.
What a dangerous environment for any non-native. Surely any Hoshidan spy would find themselves at an astounding disadvantage.
Now... where are those students she had sent away?

Amethyst grumbled as an annoying thought went through her head. This seemed more like a dare she might have received as a child than a genuine exercise in self improvement. Poke the dangerous or gross thing, go to the bad place and do a thing that is hilarious to all but the person risking themselves. Of course, she was still very in touch with that, and someone taking over that instinct was cruel.
She had debated upon her method of capture. Were she to have come from a magically tradition where power was valued over all she could have forced them into submission. She hadn't hunted an animal before, but felt like she could take a similar approach. The plus side was that unlike some wildlife she'd be safe until she agitated her mark, unless they deemed she was not meant to be here. That was a possibility. Could it be called interfering in the war effort? Maybe it was a little, but one soldier on loan for a while, for science wasn't such a big deal. Anyone who felt that way was too uptight. knowing more about things had never proven to her disadvantage before.
No trap she could make would hold such a creature, and so Amethyst’s lack of creative imagine made itself known through a light not far off from her palm. "...Can't be blind..." she mused to herself, swaying her hand, the light gliding slightly behind for a moment. She brightened the light more so that even if the faceless one was rather dense it should have taken notice, in which case she could slowly withdraw and let it give chase.
A throaty gurgle resounded in the atmosphere, causing the woman sitting upon the log to raise her head once again.
What's this now? The darkness around her became ill-tempered. There was an unnatural light coming from someplace.
What is it? A torch? Some lost villager? Speak your mind to me, my dear void.
A grim, warping sound resounded in the woman's ears, and immediately her brow furrowed with the deepest of displeasure.
"A light mage?" she hissed waspishly, "Wretch! Where are the other dark mages?" The vile voice replied to her, and in an instant the shadows beneath her feet became jagged. "Lost! Useless, wretched pieces of scum, their punishment will be most unpleasant... as for the light mage..." she turned her body in the direction where the afterglow of light danced away, "Let us see to her mettle. The light she emits will surely draw the attention of every Faceless in the woods!”
The sounds of her prey that was. That meant it had worked, which of course it had because none could ignore or detrude her magic. She began a careful walk back, one hand holding the light to pull along behind her while the rest of her took careful steps. The light made things so much easier to navigate, being able to see nasty things before you step on them, and saving time spent squinting in the dark.
Amethyst turned around fully when she heard more noise than expected. Had she drawn more than the intended one? Soldiers were pack hunters, so their replacements might be too. No matter, there could not be too many, and splitting them up wouldn't be too hard. A little planning would aid that. Hopefully the guard dogs were only trained to play half of the game of fetch.
She looked for a particularly twiggish branch on the nearby tree. With a little climbing and an outstretched hand she found a suitable one and broke it off. It was then an easy matter of shifting the spell. The light flowed down the branch, collecting at the tip to create a more traditional torch. She gave the branch a small twirl and smiled with satisfaction. Drawing more patterns in the air as she led along the group that was attracted to her, her mood improved just a little, ignorant of the growing scope of the problem.
Just how far is this person going? What pea-brained idea was this? Who in their right mind would pull the attention of fell creatures, whose very nature was adverse to any light?
"Why, why, why," grumbled the witch, "What a numbskull thing to do..."
At this time, the fog began to clear, and the extent of her vision opened up further.
Hm. The woman counted with her eyes, but even that wouldn't measure those who were hidden within the shroud. There was a grand number following after the light, but given the speed of the light mage, the most important Faceless wandering these parts was already far behind, perhaps even quitting its own pursuit of the light.
Well, that was all in musing. The full extent of a Faceless' awareness was not totally understood quite yet.
"Now, where is the mage?" spoke the witch. The ignoble voices uttered in her ear once again. "I see. Is there a clearing soon?... Good. I would like to see who this fool is before their face is beaten in." Her movements altered as she began to circle around. She followed a gentle incline until she stood at the edge of a cliff, overlooking a wide canyon. Perhaps the light mage will appear through the fog soon... Amethyst

It did occur to Amethyst that she may have been overzealous in the numbers she was attracting. Her plan to lure just the one for a more effortless subdual was wasted but she kept digging. It was alright, the stick would protect with a bit of luck. She retreated to where there was a good, clear amount of space. She burst into the clearing and waited at the other end with the branch still in hand. The look on her face was one of concern, but not quite life or death. A frown, but not more than a playful one. She could still get her trophy out of this. Status and vanity were powerful motivators even to the benevolent.
She clawed a hole deep enough to support the branch into the earthen wall and left the glowing end protruding. The faceless had no shown the greatest amount of awareness, though she was one to talk. Her only piece in place, the light mage hid herself behind an outcropping as best as was possible. She took an athletes position at the start of a race. It was not comfortable to hold at her level of practice, but it kept her lower and primed to move.
Oh, there she was. The light mage just broke into the clearing, and what she did next was a little more amusing. She left a residue of magic in a stick she was carrying, then even prepared herself to bolt at a moment's notice.
Was that a distraction? Perhaps it would be effective enough to pull their attention away from the light mage herself, but for how long?
There was no rush. Most, if not all Faceless were on the side of the Nohrians. The witch knew she was safe from harm for the most part, thus she folded her hands comfortably and simply waited.
Eventually, the Faceless that pursued the light mage had arrived, and immediately their attention turned to the stick of light in the wall. Even with their bound hands, they pounded the wall and the stick into clumps of dirt. However, it was as if they knew that the light still shined beneath the pile, and with added fervor, they crushed the dirt violently until it was fine dust.
Oh? thought the witch with a raise of her brow, This is worth noting. Her eyes shifted back to where the light mage hid herself.
Amethyst had been still, planning as she waited in anticipation. Running through the plan did little to steady the nerves. It would be simple, dart out and into the nearest of the faceless then a shot of light to the throat to stop the struggling and she would have a helmet proving she held power greater than them. But then seeing the way they pounded viciously at the dirt, it shook her a little. The leg meant to launch her forward jerked as she stopped herself. Was this really something she could do?
So what if they could crush her with the same spec they tore through dirt. The mage had a duty to be more refined, tricks were all about getting people to focus where you want an exploiting that lack of attention. She looked to the ground as she resolved to go on with the plan. Amethyst ran out and used the momentum to tackle the nearest of the nearest Faceless, pushing the covered head into the ground and placed a hand on the side of the beasts throat. With a brief flash, the small light projected become a sharp as any weapon. They were mindless enough to not care about one of their own.
Oooh. How reckless. It's not often that a mage attempts to use their own body to attack.
The Faceless that was tackled let out a grumble as it fell to the floor.
This is fine so far, at least that light mage was heavy enough to topple that one over, hahaha...
Suddenly, the light appeared in the mage's hand. In that very instant, it let out a bellowing roar as it writhed beneath the girl's body.
The witch's eyes widened. No! That was far too reckless! Taking out light in the presence of darkness?! Had she not learned the effects of her own powers?
At the moment the Faceless had roared, the others turned themselves, seeing the light in the mage's hand. While not particularly quick on their feet, they begun their approach, raising their arms to strike at the light mage.
Should I intervene? the witch wondered, her feet pressed into the soil as darkness writhed in her hand. Why should I? Light may as well be snuffed from this world... yet... Amethyst

It would be fine. A few brutes were well in her ability to evade. Amethyst knew she couldn't keep using magic so freely, but it was for a lack of other and better tools. Instead of retreating, she remained atop the injured Faceless below her. One hand explored the mask in detail, looking for a way to remove it, or any hints of a weakness in the design. The light in her other hand folded into a ball and with an over arm throw she let loose the light over the heads of the faceless to go play fetch with. There wasn't a guarantee it would work, but time to study the creations alone was worth it. The Faceless were used as tools and tools could be easily used for any purpose, but when all you had was a screwdriver everything was a screw. There was no telling what jobs they may be assigned, though it was doubtfully helpful construction or field work.
Well, from what she's seen, the light mage can work her magic into solid objects, perhaps that was simply common.
However, was all her fretting from earlier for naught? Was this light mage truly in control of her situation? At the moment, she could not even remember if she was one of the initiates, or if she was working on her own to research Faceless.
If it were the latter, there was no use lingering for someone like her...
... Notwithstanding, she would be a rather interesting specimen. Alongside witches, light mages were an incredibly rare group of mage. It would be a waste for the aspiring mage to not grasp onto... further research and opportunity.
Perhaps it was time to reveal her presence.
"Treating our nation's finest foot soldiers as dogs?" said the witch as she looked past her nose, "That's quite cruel." Amethyst

The hand feeling the mask of the Faceless pushed hard into the the ground, support the largest amount of her weight as she perked up and looked for the source of the voice. The idea she was being watched certainly informed her actions, but she wasn't too afraid after clashing wits with the ‘finest’. If she didn't have to use any more magic for a while though it would be great. A real performer would reframe the situation and disarm the crowd with insight.
“Aren’t all soldiers meant to heel when ordered? Kind of odd for someone to take offence to that.” Though the light was hardly fitting for it, Amethyst held up her hand hand to inspect the condition of her nails as she spoke. Blunt, short, yet still somehow with dirt underneath, though the actual condition was less important than that act itself.
The witch shook her head, “There is no offense taken on my behalf. Why, we are so curious on them ourselves that taking them apart simply is part of protocol, hence the next part of a lesson that I had designed for my aspiring dark mages.”
Her hand motioned to the light mage as her eyelids shut halfway, “As for you, you are not part of my initiates, I think. I personally interviewed each one of my students, and I do not recognize you.” Arms were folded as she took a step forward, “Speak, light mage. Who are you?” Amethyst

Amethyst frowned at the stern response. It made sense for one that hung out in the dark to be gloomy. As for the question: Who was she? How could she answer and not disappoint? “My name is Amethyst. You observed the most interesting thing about me. I'm a light mage, a specialisation not too common. I'm not on some noble quest or a spy or anything. Not that it'd be much your business if I were.” She'd avoided teachers as much as possible, and now thought she understood why those who had complained about them.
“Did I interfere with your lesson? How many students did you bring? If you needed help with research you could have just hired me to do the whole thing myself.” A confident hand rested on her chest, displaying the sincerity of her opinion.
“Amethyst,” the witch repeated quietly when the name was spoken.
There was no word that she was a student of hers. Furthermore, she went so far as to say she was no spy, and ask the number of her class population. Not only that, she wanted to help her.
Hahaha...
The witch put a hand to her chin and chuckled, “I’m afraid that my students were supposed to capture a specimen themselves. I, on the other hand, am supposed to watch their progress and not completely, ah, as you said, interfere with the lesson.” She lifted a hand to Amethyst as her tone became colder, “By stealing away many of the Faceless to this place, you have essentially altered a natural course of work, either hindering or helping them. So, whether or not you are from some plebeian origin or a high priestess of some lofty church, you have completely derailed the entire purpose of my lesson.
An inky darkness covered her eyes as she tilted her head down, “What have you to say for yourself?”
