The location of the new inn was within the outskirts of the merchant's center, not far from the town entrance. It was visited by locals and strangers alike, often drawn in by the izakaya tavern, where fragrant smells of fried gyoza, the appearance of plump, freshly steamed dumplings, and the strong, hot atsukan that warmed the heart and lessened worries.
The inn itself had a wide, sideways girth with ten small rooms and two large ones, finely furnished with the best that money could buy. Given that it was the merchant district, the rooms were often booked with visitors and certain foreigners.
For the innkeeper herself and permanent tenants, there was a second story installed with six rooms, accessible from the outside and inside. The rooms were quite large and had their own personal taste to them according to the benefactor, and overlooked the shallow slope that made the rear yard of the Raven's Rest.
The huge backyard was sheltered by the north wall, as well as fenced off on the east and west sides with a stone path following down the center of it until the end. There was a small koi pond on the northeast corner with a great willow tree hanging over it. Nearer to the inn's rear entrance was a patch of relatively flat, sandy ground made up a small all-purpose sparring ring, and even featured some used training dummies from the barracks. The rest of the terrain was simply grass that was cut every now and then upon request.
Of course, the most curious thing in the yard was a short, stout shack in the northwest corner of the grounds. There was a simple sign that denied any entrance to any unauthorized person, as well as a warning to never force the lock under any circumstances. Besides, who would dare cross the capricious innkeeper with such a question? It could be just a toolshed as far as anyone knew.
Mai sat on the bench beneath the willow tree as she observed from afar Angela Jessop and Jeremy Freeman, sparring with their bare hands at the sand ring. They were both fiercely competitive, yet they fought honorably and took no advantage of each other aside from their size difference. However, Angela's grace and lithe form easily danced around Jeremy's bulk and haphazard swinging, and soon he was swiftly tossed over her shoulder into the dust. Their talking was indistinct, but it seemed Jeremy was still eager to continue.
Satsuki emerged from the inn with two cups of water, which were given with a smile to the sparring immigrants. They thanked her enthusiastically, took the drink in at once, and then bowed gratefully toward the girl, who returned their thanks with her own dip of the head. Afterwards, she invited them inside for lunch, to which they easily concurred to.
This co-existence was Mai's greatest desire for the world. If she were in charge of the world's reins, she would surely steer it towards peace without any hesitation.
'Twas was a naive thought, she knew. The world wouldn't be at peace with itself so easily, not without a powerful agent behind it.
Mai reached for a teacup on her side and sipped from it quietly. The peace and quiet now led to the sound of rustling grass and whispering winds. EthanRaziel
There was shared fascination between the two. Ethan sat, cross-legged, watching his commandeered wyvern. The beast had calmed. Its hatred, evaporating with each meal. Of course, tending to the wound helped. It seemed the night had brought a sort of mutual respect between the too. And so it sat, wings folded back, head lowered to meet Ethan's
"So do you have a name?" He asked, not fully respecting an answer.
The creature huffed and shook its scaled head.
"Wait, you can understand me?" A gargle answered him. "Huh, can't say I really expected that. I guess it makes sense, you things can take orders and such."
The creature huffed.
"What? Thing?"
Another huff.
"You aren't a thing?" Guttural grumble. "So you're a boy?" Huff. "You're a girl?"
The creature nodded its head, letting its neck rise.
"A girl without a name? Um, what do people in call dragons? Wait here."
Leaving the short patch of land they were training, Ethan mad for the roost. He pushed the front door aside and ignored the lingering patrons. Passing up stairs, Ethan marveled at how quickly this place seemed to have been built. The cage that held him destroyed his concept of time and Ethan had yet to ask how long he had truly been gone. He supposed it didn't matter. Mai didn't have to tell him she was having this place built. The three didn't need to know everything.
Stopping at his desired door, Ethan beat against its wood. "Raz! You in there? I have a question about dragons."

In the uppermost floor, Raziel made his home. It far down the hall but outlooked the yard where Ethan sat with his new companion. He was uneasy. Ethan's new mount filled Raziel with a suppressed agitation. It made his stomach churn. This was the ways of human's that Raziel did not like. At least there was a part in Ethan that was trying to understand and win over the favor of his mount.
He wasn't too surprised when Ethan finally came to him with questions, though he was surprised at the time it had taken the man. The door was opened to reveal the towering man. He looked amused. "You caught me as I was about to join Miss Mai for some tea. I can spare a few moments." He wasn't going to make any promises but was more than willing to share general facts about the creatures. Too many of his race's secrets had spilled into the hands of mankind and in turn left the once magnificent race of creatures near extinction.
"Oh yeah, saw her on my way out out earlier." He backed away, letting the lumbering dragon-man waltz out of his room. He Ethan spoke as he followed him. "So I was wondering, how do dragons get their names? Do parents just name you? Or is there some special ritual?"
The two flew down sturdy steps. "I don't think Campbell ever named her and well, I guess a name's the first step to understanding her."
Bottom of the stairs, Ethan sighed. "Man, I'm in way over my head on this. I can hardly take care of myself, how the hell am I supposed to raise a wyvern?"
He pushed the door open, figuring that the beast had probably been aged enough. It wasn't so much of raising then of changing the beasts way of think. Ethan figured that thinking of it as a beast probably wasn't helpful.
"Hey Mai." He greeted.

"The nature of a dragon's name really depends on the type of dragon. Wyvern and dragons are very different creatures. Manaketes are unlike other dragons. Manaketes exist in two forms. You know me by Raziel, my human name. It was a name given to me at birth by my parents. My dragon name came to me from the ancestors when they thought I was ready for it. It's something that dragons will one day "just know." " It wasn't the easiest thing to understand or to even explain. Raziel had received his name long ago but had told it to very few whom he had grown close to. "I would imagine wyvern being similar in some aspects. The one you have there is smaller than many I have seen. I haven't given her a good look, but she's either young or bred specificly to be used as a mount. Wyvern are not be as social as manakete are. It's also very possible that her egg was abandoned, which is how she fell into human hands so easily. I find it surprising that no human handler has ever named her." It bothered him that Campbell never even thought to address her. He knew the type that just sat on the back and started barking orders at their mount. And then they would be surprised when nothing happened.
Raziel pat Ethan lightly on the back, sort of in a motion to tell him that he wished him luck with this. Maker knew that Ethan would need it. He's had so much on his plate already. "You learn. Wyvern can be loyal creatures. You get her to trust you, she'll come to you with a whistle. Start by giving her a name. Ask her what feels right. She might just know it when she hears it. If you can't take care of her, let her go."

Mai allowed herself the simple pleasure of meditating in peace, that is, until her two closest companions had emerged from the inn. They were engrossed in conversation illegible to her ears, but oh, how she loved eavesdropping. Her head had tilted up toward the inn and her slender hand cupped around to centralize their voices.
It was the conversation of the cultural norms of naming dragon kind, or at least that's what she understood. No doubt Ethan had left the yard earlier to seek out Raziel's counsel on naming the unchristened wyvern.
Of course, the question hung over her. What were the particular differences between dragons and wyverns? Maybe she'll have the chance to ask over tea.
"Yaho, Ethan and Raziel," greeted the innkeeper with a small wave of her hand, "Please, have a seat anywhere you like." There was the bench, along with two large stones that stood on the edge of the koi pond. Of course, if they felt inclined to sit on the grass, there was no shortage around the bench itself.

"Wait, your human name?" Ethan questioned. "You have two names? Like one that other dragons call you?" He followed the large man around, mulling her words over. "I mean, I'm not sure. If she had a name she's not really able to tell me. She seems smart enough to answer yes or no questions though. Maybe she never really liked her name. You know, this is her chance to start anew. Well, it's all of our chances really."
The wanderer plopped down on one of the offered benches. "I've had a lot of time to think lately. I've never been so close to death, you know? Seeing Serena too." He sighed. "I don't know. It took all the air out of me. My own sister against me. How I caused so much trouble is beyond me. But honestly, I don't care anymore. This war, this blood. I told myself that I wasn't going to fight and there I was, ready to try and create an army. Honestly, I don't know if I want to go all the way to Izumo anymore."

"Yes, that's correct." There wasn't much more to say about his own name. He took a seat upon one of the large rounded stones. A cup of tea in his hands, he drank it calmly while he listened to Ethan's words. He could always be the translator between the two, though he couldn't guarantee a perfect translation. "Sometimes yes and no can get you in unexpected places. Approval might be enough to know what your wyvern needs." It was a start at the very least.
Ethan's sudden speech had reminded Raziel of something. The fight with Serena had been on his mind since he had let her go. "What will you do then?" He asked Ethan. "At this point, your sister will continue to hunt you down. She will come after you, next time, with an army." His gaze turned to Mai. A fight like this could easily destroy yet another inn of hers. Raziel didn't want to see that happen. They couldn't just sit her idly and wait to be attacked.

After they had finished speaking, Mai simply sipped tea during their exchange until her cup had emptied. She promptly reached for a kettle and refilled her cup.
"Well," she began softly, yet a long pause proceeded, "... ano... we're safe here for now. It's not as if your sister will be able to storm across this land with a small army without being noticed. Shirasagi will respond to any threats to its people." She nodded her head, encouraged by her own words, "And... and if you plan to go to Izumo, you would need to steer clear of the forests. There are rumored to be ninjas there that are tough on foreigners, so... so if you wanted to go, you have to ready to spill blood and decapitate everything you see."
Where'd that come from?
She quickly brought her cup to her mouth and began drinking once more, albeit with an embarrassed look on her face. EthanRaziel
"Huh." Ethan laxed into his seat, contemplating the truth in Raziel's words. Yes and no could only get the two of them so far. The creature's need could be met, that was enough for now. "Can you talk to her?" The wanderer asked. "I mean I don't know if there's some secret dragon language or something, but maybe you'd have better luck."
Denying the tea, Ethan leaned forward. His listened to both of his companions, mind briefly wandering to the start of their bogus adventure. He found himself wondering how different things would be if he hadn't have stopped at Mai's inn, if he would have left when her patrons were causing trouble. That night seemed like another lifetime ago.
"Sera isn't going to come with a small army. That's not how she works. Even if she decided to, she's not be sanctioned. No one sent her. That girl." He paused with the weight of his words. "That girl came after me on her own. Maybe she'd seek help, but I don't know how she'd get it. We uh, weren't a rich family. I mean, she had more gold because of her trading job, but there's no way it was enough to hire a bunch of people." He scoffed. "I don't even know where she got that glowing bow from, or how she learned how to use it so fast. Guess time went on after Nohr stole me away."
The grim man sighed. "Leaving a mess of ninjas behind us isn't a good idea. Why kill our potential allies? It would just leave us with a reputation as bad as Nohr. Look, I'm no tactician. I don't even know what I am, but I think we need to find someone that could help us. Some spurned warlord or something."
"If we did this." He added. "I'm still not sure it's the best option."

He closed his eyes, and with another sip of his tea, he responded to Ethan. “It is possible to learn. I've spent enough time around mount wyvern's to learn some of their language. I'll admit that its not perfect.”
The dragon raised his eyebrow towards Mai's sudden outburst. It was a bit out of her character to hear. Though, Mai had changed slightly in the time that Raziel knew her. The woman who once burdened them with tea kettles and unneeded kimonos, had been pushed out of her comfort zone. It was saddening to see.
Mai did have a very good point in this. Serena was an enemy to Hoshido. In order for her to cross the land with an army, she would need to be very cunning and careful with her actions in order to avoid drawing attention to herself and whomever she got to follow. Ethan's argument against him didn't carry as much weight. “A lot can be accomplished without money,” he pointed out. Ethan had made some comrades in this with ease simply through an association with Mai. For a short time Akemi had been with them as well, but she had since parted ways. If his sister played things right, she could likewise gather a group of friends without spending a bit of gold.
“Miss Mai, you know Hoshido the most. Do you know of anybody that could help us?”

Mai's eyes leapt from staring into her tea cup to Raziel.
"Maybe," she said with a small nod, "I know plenty of the guards and samurai who frequent the inn, but... ehh... they're not the most, ehhh... trustworthy." Despite her words, her eyes lit up, "Hey... maybe we can try converting those..." She suddenly paused, looked around briefly, and then turned her voice down to a hush, "... those Faceless to our cause? I've been trying to figure out a sufficient counter to them and researching on my spare time." A happy, yet eerie smile crept on her face as she became excited with the thought, "Instead of asking for people to sacrifice their lives to help us, wouldn't it be better if we had those monsters working against them? In this way we might be able to save lives, too!" Her eyes turned to Ethan at the prospect, "To be able to command an army that would obey your every order... that would help you, wouldn't it?"

"Work with? They're monsters. You want to work with monsters? I've seen what they do." Ethan calmed himself. "I guess you can't be blamed for not knowing. Those things. Unfeeling. They always back Nohr's people. Every threat delivered to my homeland was always with them. They even destroyed a few of our homes." He pointed towards the wyvern. "I'm not one to shy away from using the enemy's own weapon against them. Hell, that's what I am. However, to think we could control them better is just foolish. Sure, maybe you can take control of a few monster, but they have countless more. They could probably even snatch them right from your control. Think about it. They've been working with these things for years. What could we learn in pointless months?"

Mai rose from her seat and folded her arms as a stern expression appeared on her face.
"Ever since our encounter with Zhara's bandits... I've taken it upon myself to delve deeper into what I am capable of," she stated, "Sure... I took some time of respite as we traveled together, but when you were incarcerated, my research accelerated as we prepared to free you from your shackles. As a result..." From her sleeve, a thin, blackened tendril wrapped subtly around her hands, "... I've gained a great deal of aptitude for dark magic."
The tendril retreated into her sleeve and she sat back down on the ground while leaning toward Ethan, "Listen... the shack. I've got something there that I'd like to show you... both of you." Once more her eyes moved to meet Raziel's. "I think you'll understand how far I've come when you see what's inside."

Gray eyes resumed their missed dullness, yet he followed her without objection. Every step came with nagging doubt. It seemed that Mai had busied herself while he was taking lashes. No matter how busy, he refused to believe she achieved enough might to trump Nohr's cancerous army of elite mages. He wasn't in any mood to push the subject. The spindle of atrocious magic that wrapped her hand had disgusted him. The magic was called dark for a reason and the wanderer knew what it could do, both to an enemy and the person that uses it.
He found himself wondering if this was how villains were born. Desperation fueled delves into forbidden arts, or good men breaking their way out of prison. Was he a good man? Ethan decided that he wasn't. He was following Mai to her shed of hidden secrets for a reason. He was at least willing to see what she had to offer. Morals shrinking before him, he waited for the women to open her doors.
