After the fall of Fort Jinya the remnants of the garrison where assigned to defend the approaches to the town of Kitsuki. Amongst the handful of survivors who managed to breakthrough the Nohrian encirclement there was a young soldier- a club wielding green haired girl who'd escaped that battle with a sword wound on her left hand. She'd survived her first encounter with the enemy cavalry by the skin of her teeth but a lot of comrades weren't so fortunate having fell in battle or taken captive.
This defeat greatly affected Akemi's pride. She could tell that some of the soldiers from Kitsuki considered them to be cowards for not dying back at their old post. It took a whole month for Akemi to recover from the injuries she'd sustained during that engagement and as soon as she was out from the medical ward she was assigned to guard an small encampment on the main road leading into Kitsuki.
Ever since Nohr attacked there had been a lot of encounters with Faceless creatures on the approaches to the town so a detachment of Hoshidan soldiers looked over these routes in order to keep the general populace safe and stall any future Nohrian incursions.
Akemi arrived at the outpost in the early morning for her guard shift. There certainly wasn't a shortage of travelers, merchants or peddlers using this road but she was keeping an eye out for more dangerous guests. Sure they ght been at war but people still had to go over their own business.

Long roads left plenty of time for Mai's lectures. She meant well, that was for sure. And there was wisdom in her words. Ethan did need discipline. A wild sword arm wasn't enough to topple an empire, much less keep him alive. If there was any regret in fleeing from Nohr, it was that he hadn't trained properly. That needed to change. Wild swipes had almost cost him his life more than a handful of times. Mai was right. He needed discipline.
The huffing man crowned the top of misty, rolling hills. Flat ground was no problem, but these inclines killed his lungs. Peeling himself from his bedroll at the crack of dawn was going to be the edge he needed. It would strengthen his will, keep his mind sharp, and tone his body. They may burn now, but his longs would grow used to it. They had to.
His jacket remained back at camp. Sweat and mist wrapped his gray shirt around his body. His wide collar objected. It flapped with each step. Black pants pressed against his waist, tightening each breath. He made a mental not to buy shorts in Kitsuki as he flowed down the hill. Long, azure hair flew wild in the air. The growing beard held new sweat.
An outpost reeled up to his right. A few guards waited lazily about and Ethan slowed his pace. Beading sweat trailed down the side of his face. His chest heaved as he approached the few waiting outside. He brought up a hand.
"Good morning! Actually, what was it that Mai said... Ohayoo?" The man's words came less than certain. He shook them off, realizing how silly he sounded. "Good morning."

The first traveler that came on their way this morning was this slightly disheveled looking man with blue hair. Upon a closer inspection Akemi noticed he was carrying a sword around and he looked obviously foreign. The green haired guardswoman approached the young man, giving him a greeting in return since it was the polite thing to do.
" How fare you, traveler? What sort of business brings you to town? " Akemi was not interested in holding this guy for too long. She was merely doing her job. Even if he was armed this blue haired fellow was messy indeed, he was no soldier for sure.

He set pleasantries aside and took a more lax approach to the verdant guard before him. His arms fell to his knees and the man bent over to catch his breath before standing upright. He brushed his hair behind his head and away from his eyes.
"Right now, nothing. I'm just on a morning run. I didn't even know the town was this close." The wanderer turned around, watching the winding road he had just run through. Its distance seemed impossible. He turned back to her. "You can expect me later on. Hopefully I won't smell as bad. You know, first impressions and all."

" I'm getting by, I suppose. " For the sake of making sure this fellow wasn't carrying anything hidden Akemi man-handled him rather briefly. This was something she did everyday so there was nothing awkward about it for the guard but she reckoned it might have made this blue haired guy a little flustered.
She decided to introduce herself and in exchange learned his name, messy looks aside he was a hottie. Certainly if he was going to become a regular around these parts it wouldn't hurt to get acquainted.
" You're all good, Ethan. " Upon finishing her inspection the guardswoman gave him a light tap on his buttocks before granting him the right of passage. " There had been sightings of Faceless all over so you be careful."

"Oh?" Ethan lifted his hands as the woman pawed through him. "You'll find a-" She found the dagger at his waistline. "Ah yes, there it is. I would have told you if you had asked. It's an old military trick and yes, it's saved my skin more times than I could count. That's all I have though. So rest assured, I'm not planning on using it on you."
"I'm not too worried about faceless, but thanks for the warning. Honestly, it's the people that worry me." Ethan took a long, deep breath. "I've seen people that look just like you and I, but worse than any monsters. you're a guard. I'm sure you've seen you share of ruffians, or maybe even a Nohr soldier."
That sentence was true now if it hadn't have been.

" You can keep your shaving knife. I'm not doing this because I consider you attractive, Ethan. Its just part of my job. " There was no need for Akemi to terrorize the locals that frequented these trails. There where a few kingdoms that where not involved in the war so she deduced this young man was from one of those places that maintained their diplomatic ties with Hoshido.
" I've meet all sorts of people. a little bit of everything and some ugly creatures indeed." Akemi was certainly used to seeing all sorts of people in her line of work even then she wasn't going to start going over the specifics with some random traveler.
" Are you from Nestra, by chance? " Since he was feeling particularly chatty Akemi decided to learn more about him. The rest of her company where out on patrol or on other duties so she could spare a minute or two getting acquainted.
"Right. Well, never said you did." Gray eyes nearly rolled.
"Nestra?" He questioned."Never heard of it. I come from a little village in the bottoms of some frozen mountains. We uh, we usually don't get very far. If I didn't know any better, I'd say this is the furthest one of us has gotten"
Conversation made simple, Ethan was happy for the quick chance to catch his breath. He turned back towards the road. Two men, decked in typical Nohr scout armor were combing through the hills.
"Scouts." Ethan said. "They come this way, there's going to be trouble. I need to get moving. You need to get back up out here. They'll back down with a group, but if it's just you... They'd cause trouble."

Listening to Ethan's description about his hometown made Akemi remember her own. There where certainly more than a few isolated tribes across the lands it seemed. " Is that so? you couldn't have chosen a better land to travel across. too bad things haven't exactly been peaceful lately. " Akemi could certainly relate to Ethan's lonely expedition.
" H-hey you're not my company commander. You can go ahead and make towards the village. I got more important things to take care of right now. " Upon confirming the presence of a pair of Nohrians Akemi reached out for her club which she kept on her person at all times while on duty.
The green haired soldiers let out a screeching battlecry to let the others know that the enemy was close by. She charged head on brandishing her club not afraid of a pair of scouts since her comrades currently outnumbered them. After being injured in the previous encounter she was more than eager to get back at the Nohrians.
"There have been a few times where the land's enchanted me. This place feels like an entirely different world. The Ice Tribe feels much more.. I don't know. Alien maybe?"
Ethan watched the woman charge off. He gawked for a second, thinking how foolish her charge was, only to smile at the familiarity of it all. How many times had he gone charging after enemies? Too many to count. Her unit was no where to be seen and he wasn't going to leave her to a band of ruffians. He sighed as he drew his sword and charged into battle.
He outpaced the verdant woman and struck at their shared danger.

Prior to mindlessly running straight towards the enemy Akemi could have sworn Ethan mentioned the ' Ice Tribe'. If they made it out of this alive then she would probably inquire further about it, right now all she could really do was focus on the enemy before them. For a rather disheveled fellow he was sure quick on his feet, the moment Ethan crossed his steel with the leading soldier she went for its partner, thinking it would be better to put them down at the same time. If one of them ran off and warned the rest of the Nohrian advance things could get messy rather quickly.

The soldier took advantage of the longer reach of its lance and jabbed it at Akemi before she could get too close. The girl was almost perforated in the stomach but she managed to move to one side, getting a nasty cut on her abdomen instead.
Akemi swung her club vertically, aiming for the soldiers head with the intention of crushing its skull from the get go. She'd always preferred blunt weapons when dealing with armored enemies

The other soldier was much less experienced so after taking a glancing blow from that club his world view narrowed down to the savage woman trying to beat him to death. He'd heard Hoshidan women where much more submissive but this one was a wild creature trough and trough, every movement she made only made it clearer. if he didn't focus then she would more likely eat the poor lad alive.

After landing that last blow the green haired girl breaks off the engagement. " To hell with these guys. let's get the hell out of here, Ethan! " Even in her injured state Akemi was quite nimble on her feet. she'd run next to him not exactly feeling like leaving him all by himself against these two.
Ethan lay distracted by Akemi's massive blow. The amount of blood gushing from her wound was hauntingly familiar and he found vivid memories of himself bleeding out on the ground. She wasn't going to be another person dying for his cause. She didn't even know of his cause. Ethan parried the soldier's pike away and bounced up. He tried to support the woman, yet his soldier dragged him back. Ethan took a wild swipe at his pursuer. "Let me go!"

His blade slashed inches from the soldier's throat and Ethan saw his mistake. The world seemed to slow, letting him take in every damning detail of death. Sweat had been cut from the man's body. The soldier wrapped his fingers around Ethan's jacket. He could see each one close around its worn out fabric. Sunlight glinted off the spear's head. Its intrusion to his body came with a pinprick before fully breaking through his body. Ethan spit blood as the soldier twisted. Gray eyes stood dull as the wanderer's world went black.
"Take care of the woman!" The soldier yelled. "I'm taking this one to Campbell."
Ethan's sword lay on the side of the road as the soldier hooked his shoulder. The downed man could do nothing as he was dragged away.

Mai walked slowly up the hill with a basket in the crook of her arm and her hands folded one over the other. Ethan had gone this way, she thought, so maybe she could have a small picnic with him on the grass as he rested from his jog. It really was the least she could do after all the trouble they had gone through together.
The contents of her basket were simple: a corked gourd of water, and a bamboo container full of dumplings. It was a snack worthy of an aspiring samurai!
With a little skip in her step, she hurried up the hill. At this point, he would've turned around and started on his way back by now... what was taking him so long?
"Ethan -kuuuun!" Mai called as she pushed on, "Where are yooou?!"
There was a strange creeping feeling that began to develop inside. Was he waiting to ambush her someplace? That won't work, Ethan!
Further along now. Her ears livened to a strange noise, and her heart began to sink in uncertainty and fear. The Nohrians couldn't have possibly found him... could they?
With the thought burdening her mind, Mai began to run. It mattered little on how unladylike it appeared... something was wrong.
"Ethan!" she called with worry drenched in her voice, "Where are you...?!" That's when she saw it. Another woman, a Nohrian soldier... and someone else disappearing down the hill. Where was Ethan?
There was no time to ask. The other was obviously a Hoshidan soldier who combated with the Nohrian. She was hurt badly!
"Hang on!" Mai cried as she pulled out a flaxen tome from her obi, "Get out of the way!"
Mai enters the fray!

Just her luck! The tome let out a puff of smoke!
"Damn you!" she screamed at her incompetence, "Hang in there!"
