All of her steps were uneasy. Every step she took wavered. There was a large red spot in the middle of Shizuka's forehead from where she had been struck by a bow staff by a student in her dojo, again. Her eyes stayed glued to the ground as she walked and she refused to make eye contact with anybody else. Not until she was on her own. She came to a secluded, off beaten path of Kitsuki. One that she had visited often. Many times in her youth she came to this place. She always hated the others in her class. For as long as she could remember she had been the target for everyone's jokes. Shizuka had been so willing to get out of this city and join up the Hoshido forces, but her fighting skills always fell short.
She crouched on the ground with her arms crossed on her knees and her head rested upon them. “Hah!” She said out loud. It was always better to laugh at things than it was to give in and cry. She laughed again and her shoulders trembled. Why? She was a clutz. She always stumbled about and screwed everything up. She had no chance with the rest of forces and she was just leading Ume into danger. The girl wiped at her eyes. She just needed to get stronger.
A beaten path on a beautiful hill. From the smallest stream to the gentle rustling of bamboo against the wind- even without many animals the area seemed to teem with animation. The call of a bird perched in the distance only served to amplify the serenity region. If one were to stay put and close to the path, they might be able to hear a gentle Such grace and solitude could hardly be encapsulated by any other land. Perhaps a few would compare to it’s majesty. Nevertheless, that would not detract a single bit from the awe inspiring sights bestowed upon any who traverse the landscape.
Grant himself simply was unable to lack an appreciation for the priceless sight. There was only one problem.
He was lost.
The trail he took twisted and turned- some of it being battered and unkept. If navigating the hills were difficult, the seemingly ancient paths did not help in the slightest. Truth be told, they might have even made the journey all the more hard considering the wear on the tracks. The experience was not completely unenjoyable; simply, Grant wanted rather to be at his destination which was apparently no where in sight.
At that point, he felt hopeless. He had been walking for hours and yet it seemed like he was in the middle of nowhere. Regardless, he did not hold onto his hopelessness. Every path had an end and at every end lay a new beginning. Man made roads were exactly the same with that logic in mind- both metaphorically and literally. Knowing full well of that logic, he discarded his hopelessness and chose instead to press onward for wherever the passage may lead him to.
Not much further ahead he caught a glimpse of the maiden sitting on the ground in her own sort of despair. Grant deemed it odd to be able to meet anyone out along such a tattered track. Although, he had not a semblance of a clue as to where he was; he could have been near a settlement for all he knew.
The butler meandered towards the girl with a hand in his pocket. As he got close enough, he pulled out a white handkerchief from the pocket. Grant then offered the handkerchief to her by his right hand. He said not a single word, not even a whisper- merely standing where he was.
It was Shizuka alone in this place. She was left to her own thoughts which would occasionally get lost by the rustles of the leaves or the sound of the rushing river. There had been attempts to erase all noise from the world around her, but it had been unsuccessful. Her mind was too clouded by her own self doubt. The sound of footsteps on the grass had been mistaken for the wind in the trees. She hadn't realized someone had accompanied her for a little while longer.
The girl raised her head from her lap. Her puffy eyes and dried trails of tears had been evidence that she was crying. With a long sigh, she turned her gaze to the river. At least, she would have, had a man's hand not been blocking her view. The girl stumbled back away from the hand in front of her in shock. Her foot had caught her long skirt and she tripped over it. A quick grunt was given as she tumbled backwards into the grass.
She could only look up at the man who stood over her, his hand outreached with a white handkerchief. His style of dress was different. Not from Hoshido, at the very least. He stood tall. Dignified. But that could have been because she was laying on the ground. He had been sent by the spirits.
Still laying on the ground she reached out for the handkerchief and took it in her hand. It was a soft white silk. Shizuka only held it and stared up at the man with large eyes. “Are you a prince?” she asked. This was like some kind of fantasy.
A lone rolling gust brought leaves twirling past them.
Grant’s left eye twitched mild at the utter random nature of how the conversation started between them. He felt as if he were a part of an elaborate joke that that had been set up by any locals that might have been watching him pass into the area. ‘No, but I am lost’ seemed like an appropriate response for the comedic scope of the situation. However by simply looking at her tears and puffed up eyes, Grant could tell that it was no false emotion, or if it was the girl was quite good at feigning it. That and the fact that he had no evidence to suggest otherwise gave him a point in the right direction.
He needed a moment to recompose himself. Standing motionless and stunned like an opossum is often not the best way of greeting one’s self after all. Come to think of it, Grant had no idea how that would be the best way of a greeting in any scenario. The butler stood up right and at attention, looking her straight in the eyes. His expression was comparably more blank than before Shizuka spoke.
“I am very sorry if I somehow gave off the notion that I am, in fact, a prince.” Grant raised his right palm to wave slowly at her. “For that matter, I am of no status of nobility.” He did not wake up that day thinking at all that he would have to state that he was not a prince to someone he had offered a handkerchief. The more he thought about how the phrase would sound out loud, the more he felt confused.
She kept her gaze on the handkerchief in her hands as a frown formed upon her lips. It was a pity. Some part of her had hoped this man would take her away to a far off land or on some amazing adventure. "That's a bummer," she told him. "All the stories say that a young maiden alone in the woods will encounter her prince, so I've been told since, oh gosh," Shizuka tapped her finger to her chin in thought over all the stories from her childhood, "probably forever." The girl didn't fully believe it, but it gave her something to think about. It sure made things a little bit more interesting to believe in fairy tails and stories.
Her movements were quick and full of energy once again. The girl sprang to her feet and held the handkerchief back out to the man while she began to size him up. He talked funny. Like it was formal. Like he very well should have been a prince. His dress was prim and proper. He didn't look like the normal type of traveler she would encounter in the woods. He was simply too fancy. Not too many people walked this far off the roads either. She didn't expect it from someone like him. "Oh I get it!" She said out loud, with realization hitting. "You're looking for something. You must be. I'll help you find it."
After hearing her speak her piece once more, Grant was sure of it. The girl was not playing any trick even if her attitude may have spoke to him volumes of it. In complete opposition, she was somewhat of a childish spirit- one that meant well and that much he had respect for. A mild chuckle departed him as his eyes closed. The situation was not funny to him; he perceived it as a small blessing to be able to meet a friendly person in time of need. It seemed to him as if he had been unusually lucky at having people come to his aid ever since he had come to the continent, this marking the second occasion. Using his raised hand, he pushed slowly onto her own where she held the cloth in an attempt to curl her fingers around it.
“You are indeed right, and I could not be more thankful presently for your concern.” Grant opened his eyes once more. Two black irises locked onto Shizuka’s own. It was strange for him to see someone who had their sights so open and gleeful, most of those he had gazed upon were grey and wrought with hardship. He took a step back and turned to face the path.
“I happen to be looking for a location by the name of Kitsuki.” Grant perked his head up lightly to view the sky coming in and out of sight as the trees rustled. “My motive was to obtain equipment for travelling as well as to purchase vegetables for cooking.”
The mention of her hometown practically had her gasp. She should have known and to most people this wouldn't be such a surprise, especially since they were just outside of the city. "Kitsuki, I know where that is. I'm actually from there. It's really close." The girl pointed down the path in the trees. It had been overgrown and hardly visible. She took a few steps towards it and pushed away some branches before she turned back to look at the man.
"Adventure~" He hadn't quite said the word but he might have well. The fact that he was traveling caught her interest. "Kitsuki is almost like a hamlet for travelers. A lot of people like to stop by our dojos and watch people training. You can buy all sorts of weapons. A lot of weapons, actually. And there's also places for you to take a rest and there's plenty of places for you to shop. What are you looking to buy exactly. A horse? Pegasus?" She bet he came looking for a pegasus. Shizuka hoped that he was looking for a pegasus, at least. Though dressed the way he was, probably not. "Those are used for travel around here. I mean, if you ride of course." She spun in her heels and had already been walking off towards the city before he had the chance to say anymore.
"Vegetables," the girl's face practically lifted into one of disgust. Her voice was low as she grumbled to herself. She took a quick glance around. He traveled with no horse or pegasus, so what would he need horse food for. Because that is what it was. Horse food. Or rabbit food. But there were things that were so much better for people to eat. Shizuka just couldn't understand what made vegetables appealing to people. "So what's your name? My name is Shizuka."
The bombardment of statements and questions flooded his mind. Often he would open his mouth as if he were about to say his piece only to realise she was still going. Grant was surprised he could follow the train of thought that went into her sentences. Even so, he needed some time to take in what she said. Allowing her to take her time to finish seemed like the most proper way he could come off. Ultimately, he did require her assistance in being direct to Kitsuki and he appreciated that. So he listened and so he waited until one of her questions marked a window of time where he could reciprocate.
From her part Grant gathered that this land had Pegasus as well. Not a surprise, though a bit of useful information in case he ever wanted one. Weapons were procured easily enough; a slight difficulty remained in purchasing them with the increasing prices during the war. Then again if you came across the site of battle you could almost be assured one or two pieces of fine equipment. Cascading beams of light peaking through the forest roof trailed along his side as he followed the person. It would not be bad for him to stay for too long perhaps, but he had one goal in mind and felt the need to make haste lest he keep his guide waiting for him.
Finally he heard the point of which he could speak. Even if the butler had little to say, it was nice to have a word in every so often. “My name is Grant,” he announced aptly. Silence followed his four words. Perhaps he was better off listening than attempting to formula something to talk about. His mind had been so far lost in Shizuka’s chatter that he had no idea what he was able to add on without seeming completely random in nature.
The girl was surprised how quiet this man seemed to be. She hadn't quite registered that she talked all over him. It seemed once he got the information he needed, he grew quiet. That was fine. It only led her to belive that this man was much more shy than she initially thought. That was really cute actually. She didn't encounter shy men too often. "Grant is a strange name," she told him. It wasn't strange per se, but it wasn't a name common to people from Hoshido. What if...
What if. Her eyes narrowed. This man could be a spy from Nohr. And here she was so foolishly taking him to Kitsuki. "So, Sir, where did you come from?" She questioned him, she kept her tone the same sing-song nature as it had been. If he was a spy he wouldn't know she was onto him. She'd play it cool. And then taking him to Kitsuki where all the dojo were would be the perfect trap. He'd never make it out. Haha, yes. This was perfect. The girl was practically beaming now.
A topic that he knew how to work finally arrived. The butler was unassuming of any traps or the such- talking to her about his homeland would be an excellent jumping point to go on with. The continent was not at all missed by him; he had no fond memories of it except for his first fight and the times spent with his parents. Though he would have no qualms visiting it another time when he was done with the current one. Perhaps the future journey would be more interesting once he had gained a few more acquaintances to go with.
The light appeared to get a lot brighter as they continued forward. He wondered which part of Kitsuki they were headed towards. A warm smile graced his cheeks before his lips parted and he spoke. “I suppose Grant would be a strange name in this land. As would many find yours should you pay a visit to Ylisse.” He hefted up his bags to make sure they were still securely leaning on his shoulder. “More specifically however, the country is where I hail from. The whole continent itself is named Ylisse and is composed of Plegia, Ferox and the aforementioned Ylisse.” His tone was more steady and he annunciated his words more frequently as to avoid any misconceptions in what he was attempting to convey.
“A beautiful land by all means. Though comparative to Hoshido- seemingly alien.”
For that moment, Shizuka actually managed to keep quiet. The moment he spoke the strange name of his country he had her attention. Ylisse. Shizuka had heard of it a few times before in passing conversation and occasionally she would see it labeled on a map if she got one large enough. Grant went on talking about this whole geography lesson about where he lived. Outside of that he didn't go into much details.
The girl looked at the world around her. “So all of this looks weird to you?” she asked with curiosity. Hoshido was the only thing she really knew. The lush lands and the bright pink sakura trees. “How would you compare Hoshido to it? I honestly haven't traveled very far.” She bit her nail in thought as she wondered just how far Ume could get. Maybe she and her pegasus companion could one day travel to this place called Ylisse.
The butler turned his attention away from the path to face Shizuka with a curious expression. The notion of someone finding her homeland ‘weird’ made him want to chuckle. The perspective of her question would have to come from Grant, though to find another country strange was off to him. Of course one would find a subject they were not accustomed to to be out of the ordinary, yet not in too harsh of a way unless they were displeased at the change. Either way you looked at it the change was good to Grant.
“ ‘Weird’ would be an informal term, so to say.” Grant gently grasped a bamboo shoot to feel it’s texture. “I, from my own viewpoint, would use the word ‘unusual’ as I am not fully acquainted with this land.” The shoot escaped his grasp as he continued along with the maiden. A hum, while barely noticeable, resonated from his voice as he spoke. “Much like the inhabitants, this land is beautiful in it’s own right.” His statement was directed more towards the grace which the people held themselves with. Even so, it could have been taken in a multitude of ways which he did not aim for.
And so, he continued to unassumingly be led into a trap.
Her steps were practically bouncing. She slowed down so she could walk beside him, occasionally falling behind him as she watched him for any exciting movements that he'd make in some sort of tall tale. His movements held the beauty that a prince would have. Still, she seemed convinced that her earlier assumptions were not false. Grant's manner of speech was eloquent. One thing had caught Shizuka's attention more than others. Inhabitants, beautiful. That meant her didn't it? The girl was practically glowing at the comment, even if it hadn't intentionally been meant for her. "If you're not leaving Kitsuki for a while, I can show you all sorts of beautiful things around Hoshido." The town hadn't been too far off now. A few houses on the outskirts of town were visible as the path they were on met with the dirt road. Shizuka had taken the long way around to avoid the school and the bullies she had stormed away from earlier even if those girls wouldn't dare harass Shizuka with the unknown traveler at her side.
"So, you had a lot to say about Hoshido. But what of your home? You have told me nothing of it." The girl leaned forward with anticipation of his grand story. "You can't hold back on me now. It seems so interesting." Everything said had been about Hosido and his experiences in this new land.
An offering well received by Grant. Sightseeing was something he could very well acknowledge to be enjoyable. Priority for what he needed to accomplish in the hamlet came in first, withal a chance to see the majesty of Kitsuki was very tempting. He pondered upon whether he should accept her offer as he spoke. “I would prefer not to elaborate out of fear of boring you, Miss Shizuka.” Two swift steps followed before he was properly on the main path. “My apologies for ‘holding back’ on you.” The butler’s right palm raised and cycled in the air slowly as if he were a presenter of a speech.
“Simply, there is not much to speak of Ylisse. It is divided into the three countries as I have said before- ruled by the Exalt.” His speaking ceased for a moment. Perhaps he should expand on what that position meant. “Think of the title as a supreme ruler of the entire continent. As if a land almost twice as large as both Hoshido and Nohr combined were to be united under one will.” Grant was conflicted on what he stated, he did not know if what he said might instil any more of an optimistic behaviour on top of her already optimistic behaviour. On top of that, he had no knowledge of how long the feud between the two nations had been dragged on. It would be cruel to give her false hope.
Aiming to divert the conversation, he found a convenience for doing so. The maiden’s walking had seemed to slow by some amount, the settlement he stood in was most likely Kitsuki. Where in Kitsuki however, he did not know. At random he pointed across a long street and towards somewhere, somewhere which looked important enough. A dojo. “Is this the place you mentioned?” He seemed rather content at his distraction- unknowing of any danger that it posed for him.
The girl shook her head full of energy. "Don't worry! It takes a lot to actually bore me!" She cheered. That statement had been false but it was something that Shizuka never quite wanted to admit to. When Grant's explanation had started going more into details of the rulers of the country, a blank look crossed Shizuka's face. She couldn't quite grasp what he was saying and she had been trying to focus on anything Grant had to stay. That is, until the world around her stole her attention. Shizuka had halted in her steps to watch a butterfly flutter on by and travel through the trees. He weaved through the flowers and flew low to the ground.
Her attention had been brought to when Grant's question turned towards her. "Huh?" The girl looked around for a moment as she examined the wooden structures of the city. "Oh! It's Kitsuki. Yeah! You wanna buy stuff at the markets right? Oh man! There so much to show you." The girl leaned forward and grasped onto Grant's hand. She started pulling on him to go faster as she dragged him through the town. The merchant stalls lined the streets with a few larger buildings behind them. Most of the larger buildings had been inns or resturants, though a few dojo's had been tucked back from the rest of the buildings. Shizuka stopped at a stall and purchased a small fish shaped pastry for her companion and herself. "Here try it! It's called taiyaki."
