Quite true that not anywhere else on the continent had he seen such grandeur. Having arrived in Nohr seemed to aid in that fact. Everything in the kingdom exhumed a depressing quality. Even most of the trees he had seen were shrivelled up and dying. One would think that almost the entirety of the land were cursed by a malevolent mage or even a god for that matter.
“I suppose I have, Miss Yui.” Grant agreed and with a wave of his hand, the staff vanished. “Though, it would be a lie to state that my journey had started in Hoshido.” After adjusting his collar, he rolled his shoulders around. “Cyrkensia was the port where I landed. Compared to it’s bleakness, Hoshido seems to be winning over my favour already.” He followed onward, rubbing his chin.
Saying those words caused him to ponder whose side he honestly stood on. As his main objective, to help all who were in need while standing neutral is of absolute importance. Yet, he had not been exceptionally aiding Nohrian locals outside of turning in generally dangerous figures. He deemed it as something to note for the future. For now the thought was completely discarded- it was far too bothersome to think about while on a journey.
A more pleasant topic to dwell on was where they were headed towards. Shizuka had mentioned pegasus- multiple of them on a farm of some sort. Meeting more of her acquaintances was not on his plans, nevertheless, if the equipment were to be present it could speed up his teaching greatly. As it was, he had no experience teaching and was more of a learner. Thus, anything to assist him would have been appreciated.
Shizuka lifted her nose and scoffed at his landing port. Even Ume gave a huff. "Cyrkensia would be beak," she told him. "That land is tainted by the very country it belongs to. Even all the festivities and plays couldn't mask the horrible Nohr lands." Shizuka didn't get it. The fact that everything seemed to be stone just added to it. The whole land was dull and grey. She could barely stand flying over it on the back of Ume, even if there was sometimes some fun stuff going on there. "I don't get why its the most popular port," she continued on. "Hoshido has plenty of nice areas to dock. And it's got a lot less crime around here too. Only real trouble seems to come from Nohrian scoundrels." Never mind the more recent bandit attacks that took place not too far from here.
"That's what makes Hoshido so fetch! There's so much color and friendly people. And pegasai like Ume. I haven't been in Nohr much, but I haven't seen a single pegasus there." The girl shook her head. There were a lot of dragon creatures and horses, but not a single pegasus. "Also, we have ninjas. I don't think there are any ninjas in Nohr. Did you know, theres always a ninja around? I bet there is one watching us now." Though she wasn't entirely certain about that. There was a hopeful tone in her voice, but the idea was pulled out of nowhere.
The area they had been walking through was already fading away to show the wide open fields of her families farm. A few pegasus walked with their wings folded to their flank, while others played with one another in the air. This was her home. She pointed over to a tree where planks of wood could be seen dangling from the branches. "My stuffs right there." She told him. With it had been two long bo staffs and a few bamboo swords.
An eyebrow cocked at their disdainful response. Both her and the pegasus aired their opinions on the continent in one way or another much to his own apprehension. The conversation very quickly became akin to treading across a surface lined with caltrops from his perspective. Too true that the land did not appear as lavished with life, yet his overall take on the people were neutral. Excluding the numerous brigands he had faced, the people of Nohr did not seem overly hash in their approach to him.
Zealous nationalism put him off slightly, still he would do his best to respond. “A tinge of harshness I did not expect.” A passing glance was given from the corner of his eyes to her. “Though. . .” His sight turned to inspect the cleanliness of his right glove casually. “There has been a light surge of criminal activity in areas neighbouring Kitsuki caused by Nohrian marauders and mages.”
A careful approach had to be taken for the matter. Most of the crooks had been turned in by himself, but any minor fame from hunting bounties was unwanted. Flattering as it could have been to be known, the value of maintaining an obscure figure outranked it. On the topic of obscure figures, ‘ninja’ was not a word Grant understood.
“Watching us you say?.” He questioned with a strained smirk. A hand nonchalantly reached under where his jacket folded over his other forearm. Always at the ready, at least until they reached an open field of course- not much cover for anyone to hide there ninja or otherwise. “Ah, but never mind that.”
He took a few steps ahead of her only to stop next to the equipment. “Perfect,” the butler secured a strap of his travel pack to the branch, hanging his jacket over the bag nearly. “Now Miss Yui, there are two main features of this training we shall carry out.” Sleeves began to fold back nearly to reveal taut arms. “Aggression in combat,” He looked to Shizuka as he removed a glove. “And a manoeuvre called a ‘counter’.”
She was oblivious to Grant's displeasure. The hatred that her grandparents had bore into her for the Nohrian lands was strong. Shizuka knew only what she was taught. She knew that she wasn't supposed to like Nohr. It was where all of Hoshido's troubles came from. Or so she'd been told.
The girl hopped off her horse with practiced ease. Shizuka's body was as light as a feather. With Ume at her side, she could be as graceful as one too. She pat her steed gently and whispered in his ear, telling him that he could go ahead and play with the other pegasus. Shizuka wouldn't be far from him. The two never were. Affectionately he nudged her with his long nose and walked off with the rest of them.
Shizuka turned away from her retreating steed to turn her attention to Grant. He stood in front of her with his coat off. His sleeves rolled. She looked at him with interest and curiosity. Shizuka never would have thought he'd look so strong beneath his sleeves. She glanced to her own arms which seemed like they were flimsy enough to blow in a gentle breeze. She could feel a lump start forming in her chest while her heart began to race. This was it. The thrill of battle. "Right!" These were both things that she learned about in school. She understood both of them well enough. Sort of. Shizuka lifted up one of the bo staffs and held it at the ready like she would hold a spear. It was pointed with its end towards Grant. She eyed him. She was ready to defend. Or attack. "Uh.. you want to come first or...? I'm not particularly great when it comes to sparing." This was where she always messed up.
Work needed to be done, that much he was certain of. Now that he came to consider the factors about his opponent, her apparel did not seem like it was made to withstand a fight with someone. Still, he would have to deal with that at a later time. A quick hand plucked one of the staves upwards to wield.
Balancing it between his hands gave him a better judgement of how to use it. Lacking experience would obviously put him at a disadvantage. However, winning their spar was not his intention. His stance appeared to be an imitation of the bully’s own. From his short examination of her movements, he had already gained sufficient knowledge of their fighting style. Only now, he would tweak this dance of staves to make her face a harsher target. If she could stand against him as he were, she would surely best the true bully with ease.
“Aggression,” he repeated calmly. “From having watched the two spar earlier, I have noticed this manner in which your school fights focuses on speed.” Grant bent his knees- now fully in position and enough to the extent where she could notice it. After all, she had been studying it for much longer than he had. “Ergo, you must strike both swiftly and precisely without hesitation at the first notice of a threat. Not necessarily to kill, but to incapacitate.”
A heel dragged back in the dry dirt behind him. His standpoint proved to be a rough one. Regardless of her statement, he kept his expectations levelled. No point in underestimating someone who he had not even fought before. A light smidgeon of excitement graced him.
“This will give you the opportunity to work on your momentum in combat.” His grip tightened around the staff. “Try your very hardest, I will not hold back.”
Grant is fighting using rank E unarmed due to him being untrained in this weaponry!
"Aggression, right!" The girl's face shifted. Her eyes narrowed on her target. She held the practice staff firmly in her hands. Her knuckles turning white from the hard grip she had upon it. This wasn't some match in the school. It was like she was on the actual battle field and Grant was her opponent. There was no bow or formalities before.
Shizuka took the first lunge towards Grant. The tip of the staff was aimed at him while she charged forward. The long skirt she wore trailed behind her while her bare feet dug into the dirt. The girl shouted, almost like she was announcing her attack with a challenging, "Raaaaaawwr!" That's what she had seen most people do.

Yet there had been little power behind her attack. With all the build up, Shizuka could only manage a light poke to her friend. That even caught her by surprise.d100

Along with the fight he had to focus on, another trouble made itself apparent. He had to surpress his laughter at her behaviour. It was hard to take her seriously when she let out a roar akin to a kitten. Out of respect for the maiden’s spirit in combat, he remained in his most earnest state for the fight they had set up so nicely.

Her attack met his own staff, emitting a loud thump from the collision. Copycat was the name of his own game. The bully appeared to use more belligerent tactics. He had to do his best in imitating it and deal his worst to his opponent. If she could defeat him at his best, she could surely do the same to her actual enemy.
In retaliation, he sent the tip of the pole out against her. A light, yet immensely swift jab to her side in return to her own assault. This was of course, to test her reaction. The attack held no restraint.
After her attack, Shizuka backed up a bit to give Grant some space to react as well as giving herself some space to counter that action of his. She gripped the naginata in her hands tightly and watched his movements. At his gentle stab, she hopped backwards and outside of his reach. He'd need to be a lot faster to hit her. The girl was full of energy, that's what her teacher always had to say. At least she was fast. Grant's attack had missed her. "Hey!" She called out to him playfully, "You're supposed to shout when you charge."

"Like THIS!" The girl playfully leapt towards her friend. Her naginata was held in the air and made for a heavy bashing motion towards his head. Anybody would know this was coming. Even the beginners would know to lift their naginata up and block the arial assault. Yet as the attack was coming in Shizuka's world had begun to slow down around her. The smile on her face had faded away. She could only foresee her friend in pain. Her heart was beating in her chest. It felt so heavy. Every heart beat resonated within her as she could only watch as the inevitable happened. The grip on her staff began to loosen while her eyes closed tightly.
CRITICAL 14 DAMAGE
After impact, the weapon slid from her hands and tumbled upon the ground. And so did she. "Oh no! Oh no! I'm sorry, oh gosh."d100

So at last she decided to take some serious incentive towards this battle of theirs. Splendid, marvellous- even going as far as to say it was perfect. To watch a fellow warrior’s skill blossom so greatly in combat gave him comfort. Her ability to strike despite such a predictable call was precise. Even if he did attempt to block, the attack would break right through as if she was batting through paper.
That much was exactly what happened.
As soon as the blow had connected with his raised staff, it swept the weapon right out of his hands and landed on his forehead with a resounding thwack. Of course, he could still fight after getting hit and was not nearly as damaged as he could have been. On the contrary, he chose not to pick up his weapon instead. Clearly Shizuka had won this spar through and through.
“That was an amazing overhead assault,” he announced as he looked to her with one eye open and a weak smile. A hand reached to pass over the slowly reddening mark on his head. One moment it was there and the next it was gone. As good as new. “However, there is still much to be done.” Both eyes were now open.
One index finger was held at shoulder height. “A single day,” he spoke calmly and without agony. “A single day of training is how long I estimate to be enough until you are ready to face your adversary. It shall be difficult- perhaps even gruelling. I shall not blame you if you wish to decline”
The sound was sickening to her. A knot welled up in the girl's stomach. Shizuka never meant to actually hurt him. For a brief moment her body felt cold. The last thing she was expecting to hear from her new friend was praise.
"What?" Shizuka said softly. She slowly opened her eyes to see Grant in front of her. His face showed clear pain. The girl could only look down at the ground while he healed himself. The spot on his forehead where her staff had collided with him quickly faded away. Grant was once again as good as new. It didn't make the girl feel any better, however. While Grant had been beaten by Shizuka, he only spoke of continuing. She couldn't do it.
Her mouth hung open while she tried to speak. The words didn't want to form on her lips. "I-" she squeaked and with a deep breath, she blurted out her fears. "I don't want to hurt you again! You or anyone! I can't do it Grant. I can't look at somebody and just attack them like its no big deal." Especially people she knew. Monsters were easy. People where a whole different story. If it wasn't for Ume, Shizuka knew she wouldn't have lasted in the battlefields for as long as she did.
So that was what the problem was. He had a feeling that her ineptness in combat was caused by an outside factor considering her fluid movements and great strength. If he had known the qualm earlier, he could have just as easily shifted around the regiment to fit it.
Reassurance was required for the time being.
A single hand was raised to his chest. “You have my most sincere apologies, Miss Yui.” The manner in which he spoke was slow and remorseful. “Had I known of this earlier, I would not have forced this upon you.” With that, he begun to make his way back to his belongings. “I suppose this is the point at which I should leave now. There are ways to fight humans especially without greatly injuring them, yet each and ever one of them still require you to inflict even the smallest amounts of pain.”
Leaning the bo staff back against the trunk of the tree, he stood up once more and turned to face her. “There is no means to fight other humans without causing them harm, I am afraid.” The truth had to be addressed. It was only a matter of time before someone else did so. Best that he let her down easily instead of a teacher she had scolding her. “You can incapacitate others as I do, however that is still not without discomfort for the recipient.”
What? No! Grant was going to leave her now just because she didn't want to fight. He was probably really mad that she actually hurt him. This wasn't what Shizuka wanted at all. She really wanted to be friends with this guy. It'd be nice... to actually have somebody she could call a good friend for once. But at what cost did this come to her? A friendship with Grant would throw some of her beliefs out the window. Fighting in this day and age was a requirement, that was a fact. It'd be impossible to actually become a great Hoshidian soldier and not hurt anybody. One day she would need to protect herself.
Grant was right.
Shizuka clenched her fists and looked down at the ground. To incapacitate was much better to kill. "Don't leave! I'll do it. I'll learn to fight your way. I know hurting people is unavoidable in battle, but knowing that I can prevent something more harmful, just seems like a better option. So please, don't give up on me."
“Give up on you?” Pivoting himself on his heel, he would shake his head with a light smile on his face. “Miss Yui, I could do no such thing.” A hand was raised to his left as he began to trail off into a slightly one sided conversation. “Please forgive me if you have looked upon it as such- it is simply becoming rather late in the day to commence these activities.”
His head perked up to look at the sky with a tut. It was nearly mid day. “I will have to leave if I want to catch any good stock of the vegetables I spoke of.” That was, if there was any left to begin with. By then he could already assume most of anything the farmers’ market sold was gone.
“Continue to train and you shall learn naturally. Target your opponent’s extremities and send the blunt side of your weapon at them.” Frozen in place, he placed a finger to his neck. “Oh yes- before I forget.”
A hand slipped downwards into his pocket to retrieved a previously wrapped up item. The Taiyaki he saved from earlier- still very much intact. It was offered to the girl.
The girls eyes widened with much relief. A gentle sigh ran from her lips. It meant the world that he wasn't going to give up on her. There was still hope for her yet. And Grant would stay along side her and teach her all about fighting and defending herself. And Ume. The horse's safety meant worlds more than her own.
The sweet treat from the market had gone forgotten. Shizuka leapt up and grabbed the fish in her hands. With it high in the air she could only feel a sense of accomplishment. "Yeah! And what a great spoil it is indeed!" It had grown a bit cold in the time the two walked and spared but Shizuka didn't mind. She kissed the fish shaped pastry on the lips playfully. He was her sweet prize. "This is so fetch!"
With a final glance back at Grant she gave a genuine smile. "Thank you again. You really helped me out a lot. I look forward to training with you. And sorry. Hope you can make it to the market before it closes. Ume and I can drop you off if you would like. And uh.. Oh!" She fished into a little satchel and pulled out a few gold. "For a place to stay. Well, I can't cover it all, but it's a start."
