This was bad. The pair had been outmatched. Shizuka had gone close to the Nohrian territory to scout, but the two of them had been spotted. Archers shot at them. It took the girl no time to turn around and fly back to the safety of her Hoshidan homelands. But that was easier said than done.
“Hold on just a little bit more,” the teen pat her pegasus on his mane. There was no sign of land around them. The only thing ahead of the pair had been the deep blue of the sea. Ume looked really bad. Shizuka held onto him tightly as the animal struggled in the air. Land had been far off. There was no hope of turning around and landing on enemy soil. They had been the ones to shoot at Ume. The pegasus pushed himself through the air as he fought the urge to plunge down into the water beneath them. She could feel the horses' decent. If they duo were to fall into the middle of the sea now, there would be no way they could find their way back to safety.
It appeared like a light. In the distance the outline of a ship could hardly be seen. “Hey! There is a ship.” She cheered her pegasus on, pulling at his reigns to direct him towards the large vessel that was alone in the sea. Steered in the direction of the ship, the horse continued his decent. Together the two of them collided onto the ship's deck. The force of the impact splinted the wood beneath them. In that moment she hopped off of her companion and was already looking at his wings. The arrows had only grazed Ume's wings. “Hah!” she said out loud. “They missed you.” Still, she would need to get the wing's taken care of before they could depart to home.

In the middle of the sea, The Wandering lady and her crew took anchor, opting to rest until the next day. Oliander had forced them to keep moving a little too fast, rewarding even the veteran sailor with fatigue. The old man had to apologize to his fullest to his crew who continued to debate whether or not the unwritten part of their job was to babysit their captain. However, what was done is done. Something about being out at sea with nobody around lifted a pressure on the crew. No people, no politics, and best of all nobody to tell any of them what to do in their spare time. Just the perfect set up, aside from a figure rushing towards the in the distance.
"Uuuh, Captain," one of the crew inquired.
"Hmm? Now what seems to be the trouble lad," Oliander said. The muscled captain trudged his way towards the railing of the deck, hands gripping the rail as he leaned in for a closer look. Eyes squinted to notice a pair of wings on what appeared to be a horse of some kind. Pegasus from the looks of it. His gaze shifted, looking around to determine whether the pegasus and its rider were being follow. Or worse, coming at them with hostile company in tow. "Doesn't seem too bad, and, uuuh. Ooh. Incomin'," the old man noted, raising his tone at the final word to prepare his crew.
Ducking behind the railing he heard the crash of the winged horse. Wood pieces splintered around the impact, but nothing that would prove fatal to anybody surrounding the deck. A young woman hopped off the pegasus, tending to the poor thing's needs. Odd sight to come across in the middle of nowhere. Any long trip would have taken its toll upon any wanderer, and even this creature had its limits. Oliander's shock turned into confusion as he determined the young woman's negligence for those around her. Part of the old man could not blame her. He was the same way, and any insistence he was much more perceptive of certain things were shot down by his own crew.
Grabbing a nearby barrel, the veteran sailor lifted it and place the object a short distance away from the rider and her pegasus. He gave a swift grunt as he positioned himself on the barrel, allowing him a nice place to sit. Oliander leaned forward, forearms resting on his thighs. A chuckle escaped his lips, deciding to speak up at last, "Havin' fun there, lass?"
All sorts of supplies were pulled out of the saddle bag that the horse carried. The woman actually knew very little of first aid. With examination, none of Ume's cuts would require her to stitch up the wing. That was good at least. The thought of having to do that to Ume already was making Shizuka's stomach turn. The teen had been far from battle ready. She had been far from going out and scouting on her own. In practice, everything was always fine. One the farm it was easy to care for injured pegasai.
Her attention was drawn away from Ume with a laugh. The woman examined the old, half-naked man who sat upon the barrel in front of her. She had been so preoccupied with Ume that she hadn't noticed the man come near. She hadn't even noticed the crew of the ship that she crash landed upon. For that moment her mouth hung open, a little bit dumbstruck that she was surrounded by these people. Most people wouldn't be so surprised. Most people wouldn't expect a boat floating in the middle of the sea to be empty. Not Shizuka.
The man's coat had been draped over his shoulders, menacingly. He was laughing at her. Mocking her. That hearty laugh had been innocent. His style of dress and the gray beard upon his face led Shizuka to only one thing. She was in trouble. The woman scrambled over to Ume and pulled the naginata from where it was holstered. Shizuka and Ume had crash landed upon a ship full of pirates.
The long spear was held out and pointed to the man. That had to be the captain. Only captains were that big and had beards. In her mind she was standing tall. Firm. Shizuka was intimidating to the man. The naginata's blade had shown that she wasn't defenseless. She wasn't somebody this man wanted to mess with. Had her legs not have been trembling, she probably would have pulled the look off. “U..Ume and I will, will be out of here a..as soon as we, we can.” She swallowed hard, “I'm sorry for crash landing o..on your ship, M..Mister Pirate Captain Sir.”

Watching this young woman gawk at his presence was the most entertaining thing in the middle of the ocean. Not much happened out here. Oliander did not mind that she tended to her pegasus at first. From what he knew that was second nature and first priority for someone who takes up the reigns. Still, part of him was concerned as to why this girl was so far out. Could be she was an enemy spy, or she was running from an enemy spy. Regardless the pegasus rider was not any real trouble at the moment. Not unless she did something out of the blue.
Such as drawing her weapon and trying to be threatening. The captain raised a brow, processing the moment as a chuckle escaped his breath. "Lass, yer tryin' a little too hard there. Why you haven't got yer sea legs yet," the old man grinned as he gauged his own situation. A weapon was aimed at him, and his axe was near the captain's quarters. Not the best place for his main weapon. On the plus side, Oliander would have an easier time talking the girl down and getting her to put away the naginata. Either it was that or some kind of foreign weapon. He had to go check later.
"That aside, made some mistakes there. First off, the whole payin' attention to where you are thing," he began, although tilted his head, thinking a moment, "'Course, can't exactly say much about myself in that regard." He slid off the barrel, grunting a bit as he let out a sigh. Oliander's full height towered about her, giving the young woman another once over. Words. Yes, those things were required in order to make a proper conversation. Nodding, the old sailor spoke up again, "And, by the way, this isn't a pirate ship."
He raised his hand, jamming a thumb towards some of his crew heaving a net load of fish. Some of the crew continued to give the situation a few looks, but shrugged and went on his or her way. The sudden impact of the girl and her pegasus did not hold much attention. If the pair did not have too strong a will they may not last too longer under the captain' nature. Nodding, Oliander walked closer, "Regardless put that thing away. Might poke an eye or two out. Kind of need 'em. Now mind tellin' me why yer all the way out here? Seems too dangerous to be at sea with just the horse."
Damn. The girl cursed inwardly. The man had called her bluff. She swallowed hard at his approach. He easily towered over her. Shizuka had never felt so small standing in front of a person before. For the first time she felt herself lost for words. A mouth simply opened and nothing came out aside from a tiny squeak. She stood there expecting the worst for that brief second. She'd have to walk the plank or... Huh. Her eyes followed his gestures around the ship. It was like an everyday boat. Men worked with fishing nets and everything.
The woman gave a long sigh of relief. If this wasn't a pirate ship then she was safe. That was a little disappointing. Here Shizuka was ready for a great story to tell everyone in Hoshido about how she fled from Nohrian forces and then battled a band of pirates to take control of their ship in order to sail back home. Her head nodded at the thought of her nonexistent victory over this man. She blinked a few times and stood with her back straight, the naginata clattered to the ground beside her feet. Playfully, she rose a hand to her forehead in a salute. “Aye, aye sir!” she cheered. Though on the ground probably wasn't the best place for it. The naginata was placed back on the holster upon Ume's saddle.
Her hand ran down her horse's mane lightly as she told her story. “It was horrible. Ume and I had been sent out to check on the boarders for invading soldiers. I told my commander that we could handle it and we should have been able to. I've gone out plenty of times near the boarders with others and there had been nothing there. Only this time there were people. I bet there were about twenty archers there waiting for us.” The girl had gotten to her feet at some point and started prancing about on the boat with actions that told her story. She had crouched upon the ground and pointed her arms at the sky like she was holding a bow and arrow. “They kept shooting at us, and we tried to avoid them. We flew out away from the land where they all were, but so many had already struck Ume. He couldn't keep going, but we couldn't go back.” Shizuka stopped and rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. “I think we got turned around at some point. We just kept going out deeper into the sea. Ume and I kind of jumped at the first chance we had to land. And then nrrr,” she spun around in circles and flopped down onto the deck of the ship. “We ended up here.”
There was a short pause and Shizuka had grown serious. Her playful demeanor had melted away. “Ume shouldn't fly for a week in his condition. Are we close to port?”

Part of the old man considered whether or not he was being too stern on the young woman. Yes, she crash landed right into his ship, but some aura about her quelled reason and spoiled Oliander's child like side. His concerns were spared, energy rushing into this girl for a salute and declaration of the classic response to the captain. "Bahaha, we got a live one here," the veteran sailor burst out, his own laughter echoing towards the sea. He enjoyed this one, since few within the ranks of the youth displayed such energy despite the situation. Even the naginata was dropped onto the deck without a second thought.
A brow quirked again when the young woman began to show off her storytelling skills. Checking for invading soldiers meant the potential for her to be in Hoshido's ranks, a few of the old man's crew giving a few glance every so often. While Oliander had half a mind to question her allegiances, the story turned into a theatrical display. She began running around and doing various motions which forced a widespread grin on the old man. The captain made a swift turn to grab his barrel, moving it closer so he could sit on it again. His eyes spread wide, attention focused on taking in every detail.
Some of his crew smacked their hands to their faces upon noticing their captain's childish state all while sitting on the barrel.
Oliander's hands patted his thighs, waiting for the story to continue further. Mention of how far they were from a port made a snail's pace into his thought process, "Oh. Hrrmm, nearest port?" The captain blinked a few times before the information came full circle into an actual thought. "Aha, nearest port is just a couple days off from where we are, weather permitting. But uh, might be a problem," Oliander said, rolling his shoulders back to pop things back into place, "Right now our destination is a Hoshidan port, which has been less often for quite some time. Since you aren't gonna be doin' much lass, and I can't find it in myself to just dump you off somewhere, you'll have to stick with us for the time being."
A finger rose up, scratching his ragged beard, "'Course, doesn't mean you won't owe my crew somethin' in return, probably monetary or just a few chores." That story kept him in a good mood, his boots stomping into the deck with a mighty thunder as he hopped off his barrel, "Aside from that, name's Captain Oliander Magnusson and this ship o' mine is The Wandering Lady." His massive arms crossed over his muscled chest, coat waving over his shoulders as though he were straight out of a romanticized text on sailing the ocean.
There was a light sigh. She was hoping that it wouldn't take too long, but that meant an adventure. But she wasn't too far off from home either and the man confirmed to be heading towards a home port. “Oh good, so you're heading to Hoshido then.” A few days wouldn't be a problem at all.
“Of course, of course,” the girl nodded her head. She wasn't going to expect a whole ride for free. It would be so amazing being able to ride on a boat and be part of a real crew for some time. Though the thought of chores made the expression on her face deflate slightly. The girl would try to do anything that was asked of her, but being out on the boat like this she didn't just want to be confined to cleaning or something boring. And she felt sorry for anybody who thought she would be a good help in the kitchens. The entire crew would most likely end up ill.
The girl rubbed at her chin when a light went off in her mind. “You said this is a fishing boat? I can do fishing. I think you would marvel at my fishing skills if I was given a chance.” The girl flexed the muscles on her arms, as if that would somehow magically show that she was an excellent angler. There was nothing there. While Shizuka did enjoy fishing, her skills were limited to a simple pole or a the use of a spear. The spears especially came in handy when she wanted to train.

She was just too darn adorable. Oliander knew he should be more suspicious of the young one, as this stranger found it good news the ship was heading towards Hoshido. He did not want some Nohr ship coming by to investigate and give his crew trouble. That was the last thing the captain wanted to deal with today. Yet, they were a distance away from Nohrian borders, and at this point the laws were sketchy at best. Even before the whole debacle between nations was the middle of the ocean a gray area. Considering Oliander's options, the veteran sailor figured all that was required of him was to act as per his usual self.
That meant annoying soldiers investigating his ship to where they decided it was not worth the time of day.
A chuckle escaped his lips, "If it were a matter of throwin' out a good old fashioned rod and reeling in a big catch to feed a family for the next three days, this old sailor would take you up on that! Although, at the moment you might be a little too outmatched by our nets." He did not want the young woman to hurt herself, and the pegasus was not in prime condition to do any sort of work. Rolling his shoulders, he quirked a brown in thought, "That's not to say I don't have other work you could attend to for me. Deck could use a good scrub, and the kitchen staff tends to be short handed. Course lass, if yer prone to burning down a campfire I'd suggest that wouldn't be a good match. Heh heh."
Regardless of chores that needed to be done, what kind of host would he be if he did not offer a chance for mischief. A knowing grin etched itself upon his lips, "Ya know, if a fishing marvel is what you want, perhaps I can show you the real marvel of a man whose life was all about fishing out at sea. Precious little girl like yourself might be able to grab a minnow out of the water, but who says I can't teach you a few things?" His chuckle rumbled again, eager to obtain the young woman's response. Starting trouble was such a bad habit of his. This poor girl might catch his mischief, or turn out to be a younger, feminine version of the captain with the boasts and tall tales.
As if the ship's crew did not get enough of Oliander on a daily basis.
Her face twisted into a small frown with his light chuckle. He didn't think that she could do it. Perhaps he was right. The girl hadn't taken the time to really look at the large nets the fishermen were carrying around the ship. It was much more than the small pole she used. This was the ocean after all. There were really huge fish to catch. Come to think of it, those nets would probably swallow her up whole. Shizuka saw herself getting tangled up in those in a heartbeat. And what if she were to catch a shark in a net? That was something that could happen right?
"Is it possible to catch a shark?" she asked with mild concern in her voice. It's not something she would be looking forward too. She heard so many bad stories about sharks on the sea. "Isn't that dangerous? They could bite an arm off or something with all their sharp teeth." The girl stood on her toes and started to examine the men around her. The group seemed to be lacking on wooden legs and hook hands from what she saw. The man in front of her was normal too. Except for the large scars across his chest. She nodded to herself. Shizuka was certain that's what did it to him. So, she could scrub the deck for this man, or she could risk catching a shark.
Scrubbing the deck was boring compared to the other option. It would be like she was cleaning out the stables again. She thought of the days she would run across the room with bare feet and a towel upon the ground. She'd do it... she guessed. If she needed to. It was a bit exciting actually. "Don't put me in the kitchen. It'll turn out badly for all of us," she nodded energetically, "for now, teach me your ways! I want to learn how you fish."

"A shark eh? Haven't been asked that for some time to where I don't know whether to start my tall tale with the smallest one or the terrifying monsters who've been caught in our nets," the old man started, a coy smile moving his cheeks inwards. Part of his claim was a blatant lie, although how gullible this young pegasus rider was remained in the air. No, he could not keep up his mischief around such a sweetheart, "Bah, sharks aren't much trouble if you're careful. Sure there's been a hassle of one biting into the net, but all I do is grab 'em by the tail and chuck the poor bastard into the sea! Or, well, push them back with my crew's help, but regardless!"
Awaiting the rest of the so called intruder's thoughts, Oliander glanced around his ship for sake of habit. Some of his crew looked on as the old man spoke with the pegasus rider. Unfortunate they caught their captain's gaze, who made a prompt wave of his hand to get back to work and ignore the conversation. Even their rest out at sea meant gathering up their catch to arrive at shore on time. Getting payed was a significant factor in their endeavors this far out. Despite all of the old captain's quirks, he managed to get his own tasks completed to his true efforts.
His neck whipped his head towards the young woman as she spoke up. He almost forgot she was in front of him. "No kitchen, got it," the muscled sailor nodded. Yet, how she inquired about fishing twisted around his train of thoughts. A graveled hum echoed from his throat, "Well if you want to know how -I- fish, let me warn ya lass that you don't want to always do as I do. You'll just get yourself into trouble you might have difficulties escaping. Gahaha!" Oliander's mind wandered toards his past, his getting yelled at by his crew about jumping into the water trying to punch a shark.
Regardless of his previous missteps, he turned and motioned for the young woman to follow. He reached the ship's railing and crouched to pick up a net, one a fraction of the size the rest of the workers were using. It would do, however, and the captain held its ends, displaying the wide stretch of netting, "Now if I might ask, do you have any knowledge of tying ropes? First step is makin' sure ya got everything tied up right so the little dastards don't start swimming off on ya!"
Imagine the possibilities! Shizuka's eyes showed her amazement of what could be possible to find out in the ocean. “You've actually caught monsters?” While the man might have been talking about the massive size of sharks, that hadn't quite registered for the young rider. The girls mouth hung open. This man had seen real live monsters out here on the seas. Forget sharks, there was much more out there in the water. The girl turned her head and looked out to the vast ocean. Wow. This was really the first time she had seen it as massive as it actually was. “You guys actually touch them? That sounds really gross, and dangerous. Anybody lose a hand to one? Or a leg? I thought that people on boats were supposed to have peg legs and hook hands. Because its dangerous and everything.”
Filled with energy the girl posed before Oliander, her arms flexed and fist balled to show that she could take on anything. Or probably die trying to take on anything. “I bet I could wrestle a shark with the rest of your men.” The girl soon dropped her pose and followed after the men at a quick pace like a little yapping dog at his heels. Her face lit up at the mention of tying knots. That was something she could do. “Uh, yeah,” the girl had to think about it a little bit, “I've tied plenty of knots back at home. I grew up on a pegasus ranch.” The girl looked over to Ume and she gave a light laugh, “Searching the skies for a missing pegasus is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. Then you gotta get an advantage on them and try to lasso them. At least by then they're usually grounded and tired.” She looked over the net that was tied to the ship with a nod. “Yeah I could probably do that.”
