Clothing: Not that he lacks clothing, but one of the prime factors of his fashion sense is, well, he refuses to wear a shirt. Whether he enjoys showing off his musclebound upper body or prefers to move around as much as possible is anyone's guess. A headband is wrapped around his forehead, the tail ends in the back waving around in the wind. His shoulders hold up a rather thick coat which tends to remain positioned in all of its epic, Hoshidan-banchou-esque glory. Oliander may or may not have been a bit drunk when he saw that style. The coat itself, in truth, is connected by a chain around the collar sections.
His used to be trousers, hefty enough to withstand a storm out at sea, reach down halfway past his lower legs. Obvious tears indicate where the original clothing was torn off. Around Oliander's waist is a leather belt, although it spouts more mass than a typical waist garment. Different pouches and hooks are attached to this clothing item in order to hold various, and vital, items of choice. A pair of black, leather boots cover his feet, with a few buckles making sure his footwear is locked in place. The ripped trousers don't seem to matter as much considering a mere part of his lower legs are revealed at this point.
On his hands and midway up his forearms are solid gloves made from the hide of some animals, metal guards buckled to the tops in order to provide a decent amount of protection. The gloves themselves are finger-less, ending right at the knuckles.

Personality: Entering any room after a hard day's work resounds a deep, booming laughter belonging to Oliander himself. His jovial and rowdy demeanor may cause a few people to think he is in the early years of retirement, but this is far from the truth. The old sailor's always been an active man. Oliander is open to meeting new people, reaching out to make most anybody another friend. Despite not quite being an actual grandfather, he treats the youngest of beings as his grandchildren, and the rest his own kids. Assuming the people he is involved with are a few decades beneath him of course.
Complementing his boisterous demeanor is a matter of stubborn will and hot blooded retorts. Removing this man from his current path is a difficult task, and he often gets carried away and does not realize until the last minute any mistakes he's made. Somehow Oliander manages to get himself out of the more perilous situations caused by his stubbornness. Either that or he has been lucky to no end. This man hates seeing innocents harmed by another, and is one of those people who would rush after a robber stealing a lady's purse at the first signs of trouble. It has caused a few conflicts of interest with other parties involved in the matter, such as local guards. Also, bar fights. Lots of bar fights.
There are moments when he can force himself to calm down enough to remain focused on the matter at hand. When not on deck overlooking his current assortment of crew members, with pats on the back and a bout laughter, Oliander remains a bit more strict as to occurrences with his ship. Getting lost at sea spells trouble for everyone involved, and nobody knows what to expect. Unless he has no choice the man would much rather wait it out at port if a storm is on the horizon. This holds true when it comes to the status of his crew and any guests inhabiting his ship. Attacking even a single person operating under his name in some fashion is met with the swing of an axe, or fists ablaze.
Wars tend to be a distrusted factor of living. His business tends to gather parties from many different sides, and the law of the land tends to place a bout of pressure on the fishing industry. This man is prone to placing a lot of stress on himself regardless of how much he tells everybody he is doing just fine. Alongside wars come food shortages, and to the dismay of his crew at times, fishes up more than appropriate in order to feed those less fortunate. Not the mention the tricky issue of opposing forces wanting a ride on his ship for safe passage. It takes a day or two before he weighs the pros and cons of taking up an offer.
Yet, the current bout between Nohr and Hoshido seems to be a tense one. Growing up in Nohr, raised by two of Nohr's soldiers, and declaring himself a proud member of Nohr has placed a bias he cannot ignore. He won't raise up arms for the sake of his country, aside from dire circumstances, but he continues to eye Hoshido's residents with a cautious gaze. Oliander does enjoy antiques he has gained from that side, but he does not want to allow any kind of assailant sneaking over to cause havoc among the royal family. When the old fisherman does accept Hoshidans onto his ship, he checks up on these guests a bit more often than others. At the end of it all, he forces himself to give a stern lecture towards a resident of Hoshido about staying low and causing as little trouble as possible. Regardless of how much Oliander gets along with him or her, he won't always be there to back these people up.
When he does manage to take a break, the great outdoors is a wonderful moment for him. During these times he will isolate himself in the wilderness, taking vital belongings and locking down his ship, and keep himself occupied through training or other means. Typical places include lakes in the middle of the woods and coastal areas. Being a man of the sea he enjoys the prospect of swimming. Oliander grabs these opportunities to place significant thought into his actions, and regret any bad ones he has made. Vacations like these are also when he is less prone to being suspicious of travelers from Hoshido, unless they attack him, or course.
The man desires nothing more than to make a better way of life for himself and those who meet him. He gets frustrated knowing he cannot solve every problem that comes his way. Once this sailor finds someone of something worth his true loyalty, he can becomes overbearing and overprotective. These upsets are often combined with a forced use of his natural charisma and jovial persona, but end up being combined in an awkward manner. In recent times he questions whether or not taking sides in a war at all, despite his upbringing, is the correct path in his lifetime.
Biography: Years before the current hostilities between Nohr and Hoshido, Oliander was born on Nohrian shores in a port town. This near out of the way town was not famous, but it proved to be a vital stopping point for trade and other means. Both of Oliander's parents were soldiers of Nohr who retired in order to try and raise a proper family. As such, he was raised with the mans to defend himself in addition to learning the trade of a sailor. Fueled with the pride and energy his parents had, including a mean, stubborn streak, Oliander became known in his area as a defender of the weak and one who could conquer the sea. Not without a few brawls with others his age. Even with all of the consequential lectures, he did not stop following his parents' teachings.
For the most part a lot of his growing up was uneventful. He grew older and went out on longer fishing trips, and even took over for the town guard when there was an outbreak of the common cold. Despite all that was going for him, this port town was never enough. Oliander wanted to know more about what lay outside of their home regardless of the danger. From tales other traveling sailors brought to his town's inn, his fascination turned into a well formatted goal. He did not want to remain at home while his parents went out to some foreign land to discover new ways to expand their lifestyle. In one incident Oliander was banned from going onto a ship for six months.
His dream would come true, but at a cost he would much rather not have payed. An unnoticed storm had swept through a fishing caravan his parents were a part of, causing no word for a month before it came to his attention they had drowned beneath the sea. Oliander was lost and broken at that point. At twenty-three years old he felt he was unworthy of carrying on his parents' legacy. Before they left he argued with them once more about letting him go with, and like before it did not end as well as he hoped. The man turned to drinking for a good year before the dock manager's daughter intervened and gave Oliander a swift kick in the ass.
The same woman who became his wife.
In order to to gain a manner of respect once more, he took what remained of his parents' lineage and worked to gain another boat for his purposes. Time, effort, and harsh beatings against the elements came into a much needed result. Oliander, the strong, larger than life sailor, began his fishing business across the seas and back again. He would leave his wife, Marian, at home by herself for long periods of time, but the man was too stubborn to outright die. Commanding a full crew of his ship, the man became known as Captain Magnusson, who piloted The Wandering Lady. His wife may have smacked him a few times for not coming up with better names.
Over the years he lived out his dream, came home to his wife and kids, and did an assortment of tasks. Collecting various antiques from different parts of the seas became a habit of his. Each one represented a journey he completed regardless of how dull the path was. During these times he also encountered his share of Hoshido, and while he questioned his trust in other lands, was more willing to give the residents of the kingdom a chance. Besides, it led Oliander to gather an even more diverse set of antiques, a decorated tea set being of his prized possessions. These travels around various places also led him to do less... trustworthy acts.
At most, the worst that happened was his wife's passing around four years prior to the present day. His kids began to move on with their lives, and Oliander knew he could not stop them. Although his other affairs were unknown to Marian, this old sailor regrets not admitting his sins and letting the poor woman know before her final breath. But he knew what she would think if he sat down and became a drunkard again. Despite all of life's hardships, he learned how to pull through. He keeps doing what he enjoys, gathering fish, meeting new people, and even becoming a ferry service from time to time.
But with the current tensions he has become less certain of which way the winds are starting to blow the sea's currents.
