Given that they traveled on foot for nearly a day's work, Mai found that it was high time to seek out a bath house, or at least something similar. Having the company of two able-bodied meathead survivalists was good protection... but, oh, how they stunk of a barn! They could care less about baths and hygienic practices!
Ugh! Men!
It had barely been two days since she left the village near Fort Jinya, and even then she missed the company of her female compatriots of the Raven's Rest. How they talked the day away about local gossip while waiting for busy hours to come... and afterward a long day, eat the leftover dumplings. It was a good life.
"I could go for some dumplings..." she mumbled to herself as she made her way to a small restaurant. She sat down outside and pulled her purse from her obi. She had enough gold to last her a while, and she only spent it when she really needed it... so why not a little splurge every now and then?
That said, Mai rose from her seat and went inside to order some dumplings.
The little restaurant came at the recommendation of a few local farmers. It was a little pricier than Nobuko had hoped, but after a long morning of walking, her empty stomach won out over her empty wallet. She would just have to look a little harder for some odd jobs to do between towns. Perhaps get hired on by a merchant as a bodyguard. That always paid better than the handiwork she usually settled for.
She put the thought aside as she approached the restaurant. There was a woman on a bench outside peering through her purse, but Nobuko paid her no mind as she entered the establishment. It quickly became apparent that she had arrived right at the afternoon rush. The low tables were packed with other diners as they enjoyed their own meals. Clearly the recommendation she had received was well-deserved: the smell of the restaurant's signature dumplings alone was enough to bring Nobuko's mouth to water.
The door slid open behind her, and she turned to see the woman from the bench step inside. Nobuko felt a pang of--something. Not quite guilt, but similar. It was very crowded after all, and the other woman had technically arrived first, and Nobuko could always get her dumplings to eat on the road. But--and it pained Nobuko's ninja pride to even think it--she was a little tired of eating on the go. Nobuko looked over the dining area once more and spotted a single empty table. She glanced back at the woman and shrugged. "I would not mind your company if you would not mind mine," she said.

This place filled up pretty quick with customers... were the dumplings here really all that great? No place could beat Raven Rest's dumplings!
Mai turned as the stranger spoke. Hmmm? She hasn't seen her before... and my! Those scars on her face! That battle-worn yukata! If there was anything she knew about tough customers, this one screamed the status of a warrior! Having had headed the inn near Fort Jinya, she's seen and communicated with plenty of rugged fighters who passed through. This would be no different, or rather, it might actually be better since it was another woman!
"I wouldn't mind," replied Mai with a small bow, "Please take care of me." She proceeded to the open table and sat down on one side. Nobuko

Nobuko inclined her head in agreement and followed the other woman to the table. She dropped into a well practiced seiza on the opposite side and studied her lunch partner. She was probably about the same age as Nobuko, but taller and less battle worn. And yet, Nobuko got the feeling of power, not unlike when she confronted a skilled Diviner. She filed the thought away for later and dipped her head in a shallow bow. It would only be polite to introduce herself while they waited for the harried waitress to reach them.
"Well met. I am called Nobuko," she said. "I am afraid I am a stranger to this place. Are you familiar with this shop?"

"I am Watanabe Mai," replied she with a quick bow of her head, "I've been here before, but I can't say I'm too familiar. I've only been here once before on the way to the capital a year ago." Her hands raised and her shoulders shrugged, "What I remember is that their dango is a little on the dry side, although the mochi is... good, to say the least." She leaned gently over the table with her hand on the side of her mouth, "... I can't say I like them enough to come here all the time, but a girl's gotta have dumplings after a long trip!"
Shortly after she spoke, the waitress came by her side with hair dangling over her forehead, "Right, hello. What can I get for you two?" She set down a kettle of hot tea in the middle of the table.
"An order of dumplings for myself," said Mai, she looked to her eating partner, "How about you, Nobuko?"
