Evelyn's face paled. "No, no- that's not what I- I never-" she stammered out before her voice completely died out. Her breathing began to speed up with each claim, until she was practically hyperventilating. To her horror, she felt a few frustrated, embarrassed tears begin to collect in her eyes. She lifted her hands to try and wipe them away before either of her companion's noticed, only for Mortimer to bop her--hard--in the back with his muzzle. She staggered, stunned, then whipped around and gaped at him.
"Mortimer!" she hissed, but the wyvern seemed completely unrepentant and bopped her again--much lighter this time--on the forehead. She blinked at him feeling completely perplexed until she realized her heart rate had eased and she no longer felt the urge to cry. She took a few deep breaths to be sure, then shook herself. "Please behave yourself for Miss Fae," she said sternly, but ran a gentle hand along the length of his nose all the same.
She turned a wan smile on the other woman. "Eccentric, yes. He seems like... quite the character," she replied, tone carefully even. She turned Mortimer so he would be easier to climb onto, then waited. When Fae made no move to actually get on the Wyvern's back, she frowned.
"Um, do you need a leg up? I don't mean to push, but Oliver is going to leave our sight at this rate," she said.
Oliver chuckled at Evelyn's reaction before moving on ahead, "That's adorable." And then he was off, nearing the very point he was out of their sight. Though it was taking a moment for them to get to him, the outline of Oliver's body came back into view, jumping up and waving his arms, "Come on ladies! Adventure awaits!"
He called out to them before standing and turning around, waiting anxiously to see the town. He wasn't excited, but he wanted to see if there were survivors. Despite being eccentric, he was still someone with basic human values.
"Oh no." Fae said, head turning slowly to her new companion. "It's just that um.. I've never ridden a dragon before. In fact, my feet never even left the ground." She sighed. "And in this shaky state.. Forget it." The dancer said. This wasn't the best moment to be hesitant. In fact, she left home knowing full well anything might happen. And boy, was anything scary.
She climbed onto the wyvern slowly. Her movements, deliberate. She treated the massive beast as if it was a fragile statue. Finally on, she took a deep breath "I'm ready."
Evelyn did her best to smile reassuringly. "Don't worry. We won't let you fall," she said, and watched as Fae finally climbed onto Mortimer's back. The wyvern grumbled a little at the awkward way Fae moved, but held still as she got settled. Evelyn sighed and patted his flank. She would have to reward him for humoring them later.
Normally she wouldn't want to risk overburdening Mortimer, but by now Oliver was nearly out of sight. She swung herself up in front of Fae and gripped the reins. The position was a little awkward, but ti would have to do. She glanced over her shoulder. "Hold on tight," she said, then gave Mortimer the signal. He took a short running start, then launched himself back into the air and flew after Oliver.
Oliver would turn around, watching the wyvern take off from the ground. With his back to the wind, Oliver started jogging off toward the direction that Fae had come from. Mortimer would be more than capable of keeping up as he was a flying reptile with big wings that could propel him fast through the air, and Oliver was just a lad with legs.
Leading his compatriots, Oliver would continue at his current pace until he approached the outskirts of the destroyed town, slowing down to a walk and eventual halt when he could see smoke bellowing up into the sky. He looked over his shoulder at the wyvern and pointed with his cane at the town, as if to ask if this was the one to Fae.
Fae returned an awkward smile, tilting her head so her battered orange hair shifted slightly. "Fall?" She questioned as the wyvern started running. Her heart raced, matching the beast's rapid steps. She let out a short scream as they launched into the air. Eyes closed, she steeled herself and her voice. Fear faded. Eyes opened. "Anything" was filled with wonder.
The ground melted into a mix of colors and fascinating blurs. Details meant nothing, yet there was a strange beauty of it. They soared passed a body of water and how beautiful it was. Boats streaked its small depths, leaving long lines across its sloshing surface. Despite all the wondrous sights, it was the feeling of the wind teasing her hair and brushing chilling hands across her flesh that excited her most. "This is amazing." Fae said calmly. Her voice, probably lost to the wind.
Then the sky darkened. The air, less clean. Breathing was difficult. Below, the ground smoldered. What was left of the village, was composed of ash and charred wood. The occasional stone foundation of desecrated homes reminded Fae of her previous night. How real everything felt. So fresh.
"It's right there!" Fae pointed. She lost her balance on the wyvern, falling forward and thudding onto Evelyn's back. "Sorry!" She yelled over the wind as she corrected herself, rubbing at her chin.
Evelyn just barely caught the whispered words, and grinned. The view was pretty amazing, wasn't it? If they survived whatever awaited them in the village, she would have to start riding for pleasure more. It was kind of a waste to always be walking on the ground when they could be flying instead.
As they neared the ruined village, however, the pleasant thoughts fled and Evelyn's expression turned grim. She hadn't gotten too close when she had passed by earlier, but but now she could see the extent of the damage. The buildings were in shambles, and the fires were still burning. The smoke was nearly smothering even at this altitude, and Evelyn deeply regretted not investing in some sort of face mask. She couldn't even put her shirt over her face with her neck brace in the way. Another thing to add to the list of things to do in the future, she supposed.
She started as Fae bumped against her back, but she waved it off. "It's fine!" she yelled over the wind, then urged Mortimer to fly lower as she searched for Oliver through the smoke. Vague, dark shapes moved in the distance, and her heart leapt, unable to tell if they were more broken buildings or Faceless. Finally, she spotted oliver at the edge of the village and urged Mortimer to land near-by. He hit the ground a little harder than usual thanks to the extra weight, but luckily not hard enough to jar his riders too badly. "Alright, we're here. What's the plan?" she asked.
Folding his arms as the wyvern landed and Evelyn spoke to him, Oliver considered a plan of attack. "Well the proper deal would be to allow the fog of war cover our movements. With that much smoke it might make it easy to move around now that it isn't as toxic. Thing is it'll still bung up your lungs no?"
Cupping his chin with his right hand, Oliver considered what could be done, he couldn't see what else was in the town save for a few outlines. "My concern is why they are so intent on hanging around after the deed is done. Thankfully nothing is completely destroyed, so we have that working for us."
Pointed to a few structurally unsound buildings, Oliver pointed out to them, "We could topple over some of the bricks and deal some extra damage to any of the monsters in there, that way we don't have to do all the slaying up close and personal. Find a torch maybe and illuminate the area a bit more?"
Maybe her Fae's reaction to the wyvern landing was a bit drastic, but the dancer jerked against it's side. She let Evelyn dismount before she did. she stepped off, wiping at her face. Phantom wind still left its chilling touch across her bruised face. "That was amazing." Fae said as she got used to the ground.
"It burns." Fae said in reference to the smoke "But you'll live. I did. I'm no tactition. In fact the first time I even had to fight was that night. Who knows why they're here but, no." Fae said firmly. "We can't just topple buildings. If there are survivors in there, we killed them. We can't do that. We can find a torch, but no buildings can topple."
Fae took a step toward the city and pulled her key from the ring at her side. The key itself was a large piece of bronze. It felt heavy in her hand, standing half of her height. She gripped it tightly and looked back "The woman should be partway into the town. I'm not entirely sure where and I'm hoping I'll recognize where.." She felt suddenly unsure of herself. "I know the general direction."
Evelyn removed her axe from its holster on Mortimer's saddle then came to stand with to other two. A small part of her was pleased that Fae seemed to have enjoyed the flight so much, but she pushed it aside. Now wasn't the time for distractions.
She listened silently to oliver's suggestions, then Fae's quick rebuttal. She would never thought of either point herself, and wisely decided to keep quiet as they spoke. However, there was one point she felt confident enough to butt in on. "Even with the smoke limiting visibility, it might be faster to look for your lady from the air. Um, of course it would only speed up things if she was out in the open--you can't really see inside buildings with intact roofs from above--but it might narrow down our search? Maybe?" she said. It seemed logically sound, but doubt niggled at the back of her mind all the same.
Oliver turned and looked at Fae with a chortle, "I never said anything about dying, but coughing from smoke inhalation that can attract anything with ears is a well known factor." He said before withdrawing the red scarf from his jacket and began to wrap it around his face from the nose down after lowering his hood. With an impromptu mask tied up, Oliver put his hood back up and looked back at the village. "Right no destroying anything--because that's bad. Right." He verbally reminded himself while standing at the head of the trio, his cane held over his shoulders and arms draped over the cane in a relaxed posture.
"Well if you know the general direction tell us then. Like hell I'd let your barely standing body be the one to lead us." He chided her about how she needed first aid and likely not in the best of conditions to take the first encounter." Looking over at Evelyn, and then at her dragon, "I don't think flying over a smoke covered land is keen on spotting anything on the ground love."
"Guess that leaves me to lead us in? What do you say?" He would wait for them to decide, but walked over to a destroyed sign of the town, nearby a small fire crackled which he stuck the wooden shard in and got it to light up. "There. Now we have one thing on the checklist done."
Fae listened, feeling somewhat talked down to. Her face took sour shades for quick seconds before returning to a tired version of its neutral look. The dancer nodded, glancing into the town and trying to see passed hanging smoke.
Dead streets flirted with hanging ash. Rubble littered surprisingly untouched roads. Broke shards of glass hung in windows. On occasion they were glossed red. Fae watched carefully, trying to remember the best route.
"We'd go down this main road." She pointed ahead. "For about.. A while. There should be some sort of shop. If it's still standing, we'll know to turn down the road there. It was um, a dress shop? There was a large thimble outside. It was metal so we could at least have that as a marker if the building is burned. We'd pass a weapons shop after that before getting to the inn. From there I could probably find us the right direction. It's where everything started, well for me."
