Once again, there was no way around it, and this time, things were drastically different. None of her comrades were present with her this time, only her and someone that the higher ups had selected to accompany her.
Ursula sat on a rock, hidden away in a forest among the brush near the designated meet-up point. She had taken the majority of the road on foot, knowing that a carriage would bring far too much attention to herself. As a consequence to that decision, her feet ached tremendously.
Even so, she kept a poised, refined appearance, knowing that the person she was to work alongside with was to arrive soon.
Quite the contrast to Ursula, the ragged mercenary known as Fila Filigree (or 'Jack', to some) made their way up the mountain. Their eyes scanned the surrounding area for any sign of ambush, before eventually settling on Ursula. She gives a wave. She enjoyed working with Ursula. Though she suspected the Witch still had things in her life to sort out, she had proven an able soldier in previous assignments.
She hadn't gotten the full details of the assignment yet, but if she was to be working with Ursula then she expected some bloodied hands by the end of the assignment. That suited her just fine.

Ursula's arms were folded, her hidden hand exercising the gross, depraved magic of the dark. When the silhouette appeared, her hand spread open, prepared to whip one of her more recent tricks at whomever it was. Alas, it was only Fila , who made her presence known by a simple wave of her hand.
"Ah," the witch murmured, she raised her other hand and beckoned for the dark mage to approach, "Come."
There was much to discuss.
"Our mission is simple, yet clear," Ursula spoke sotto voce, she motioned her head to the town down the hill, "According to my intelligence, apolitical prisoner is being kept in the hands of the rebels. Whether or not he is there on purpose for protection, or if this was designed to be a trap, one thing is certain: he is nothing more than a liability and must therefore be eliminated." Her words were cold and unfeeling, matching the dark expression on her face. "These rebels are likely armed and prepared for a fight at a moment's notice, but they are counting on a greater force to disrupt their operations."
She inhaled deeply and exhaled gently, "That said... these particular rebels hide behind their own civilians to mask their scent. To our king, it does not matter, for they have chosen to protect themselves with the bodies of their loved ones. If they stand in your way to our target..." Her eyes glinted, a deep, creased frown on her face, "... Strike. Them. Down."
Fila nods. She knew what was being asked of her. The burning Hoshidian villager, the bleeding guard in the alley... They would have company soon, she and Ursula would be seeing to that. Once more, blood would be spilled for coin. She didn't really care why she was doing this as long as she was paid well, at least beyond making sure she wouldn't be scapegoated. Nohr was could for that, at least. Massacre was so common it was barely a crime, so the Crown rarely felt the need to blame domestic tragedies on someone. It would happily admit to interfering.
"Understood. No mercy, right?" A smirk breaks out across her face. Today would be simple. She liked simple. Maybe she'd feel bad about this later, but right now she could, however briefly, just do her job. She decided she would take more missions from Ursula; the mage had proven to find assignments that suited her skillset, even if the abrupt improve was sometimes frusterating.
Fila begins to walk towards the village, beckoning Ursula over. "I guess I know why you don't have your squad with you." Unlike Ursula, she seemed to be totally unfazed by the gravity of what they were going to do. No need to center herself, no discernible hint of regret... Just muted anticipation for the chaotic battle or gruesome sleuthing that would occur once they arrived, depending on the layout of the defenders.

"They don't need to see this part of my repertoire," Ursula responded with a shake of her head, "I've forbidden myself of ever speaking of these assignments." A hood was slipped over her head as she alighted from her settle and followed after the dark mage.
From that moment forward, her ears were deaf and her heart was closed.
"Go wild, Fila ," spoke Ursula with a new, callous vigor, "I will flank to the right. Spare none in your path to our target. We withdraw only when he is dead." She diverted from the course the dark mage took, walking alongside a cobblestone wall that marked the boundary of the village.
Her first target was carriages and the horse stable to prevent anyone from a quick escape.
"We all have to grow up at some point Ursula." Fila says with a mocking grin and a lackadaisical shrug. She makes a small mou of disappoint as the hood slips on.
Fila ghosts around the village, up over the wall near the bakery. She takes out a booklet; the tattered remains of the fire tome she'd recovered from that Hoshidian village. It was far too damaged to be used as a tome, but in a pinch it outperformed any flint and tinder. The thatch lit up like a bright candle in the night, quickly spreading along the roof while Fila vaulted over the village wall and skulked to the next house. She did not want to be next to the bakery when the fire finally reached the flour.
Unfortunately, someone was already coming to investigate the faint glow. They might even be able to make a difference, with how fast they were rushing over. A shame for them, and the rest of the villagers, that a misty cloud of blackness sheared through their midsection. Fila hoisted their corpse up over the wall, dumping it in some bushes before she continued on her way.
Her next stop was the barracks, to ensure that any militia response would be neutered before it could occur. There were a few more guards, but it was dark and they did not see her in time. Then they never saw anything again. Well, she assumed they were guards, but there was at least one that didn't seem dressed the part once she got closer. Probably an innocent bystander. Still, Ursula had said to eliminate anyone in her way, right? If there's no guards left to find the bodies, its just as stealthy as leaving no bodies for the guards to find.

Given the size of the village, seeking out the horse stable was a simple matter. The building itself was nothing more than a shack, unattended by any persons with the animals themselves sleeping.
At this moment, an inky liquid quietly flooded the stable, ascending up the legs of the slumbering horses, up until it reached the heads. In a brief, but unsavory moment, the bodies of the horses collapsed with a heavy thud on the ground, blood leaking through their eyes and ears.
The sound did not go unheard. Two soldiers appeared from around the corner of a house carrying torches. From their position, it appeared as if the horses had disappeared from the stable.
"Something's up, let's check it out," one of them said to the other. Both of them entered, and to their dismay, the corpses of the horses appeared to rot before their eyes, dark worms festering in their flesh. "What... what could have done this? This isn't human..."
"Exactly."
At that moment, darkness-infused hands were placed on their shoulders, and the bodies of the two men shriveled, robbed of their vitality, crumbling into naught but dust. The torches were swallowed in the viscous black. A certain youthfulness appeared upon the witch as she began to move toward the town, an aura of malevolence proceeding before her, withering the grass and nearby pots of plants.
"Where," she murmured, "Where did you hide yourself?"
A bright, warm light appeared in the atmosphere, likely from Fila's own exploits. There was the shouts and screams of men, women, and children alike as the dream of an enemy attack became reality.

Sadly, Fila did not have quite the repertoire of foul curses. But she did have some. She kneels down to a dead townie, drawing two fingers across their face, then across her own. The guard at the armory was nervous, antsy. They wanted to run and go help the people trying to stop the bakery fire before it was too late. They didn't even think to question the return of one of the guards who had ran off to help, until the air began to leave their lungs. Just before oblivion hit, they remembered that said friend had no skill with wind magic.
The false face melted off her as she stepped into the armory. The wrecked fire tome would serve its purpose here too, sending the entire building up in flames. Fila stopped to grab some important looking documents on the way out, stuffing them casually into her coat as she strolled through the village. In the distance, the bakery exploded, sending deadly splinters scything through the bucket chain. It had been a lost cause from the beginning, the people would have done better to just evacuate the area around it. That might have left them with enough ready people and buckets to save the rebel's headquarters.
'Such a shame.'
She reveled in the chaos, even as she kept to the shadows. Any order had been sent into upheaval, and that meant she could work. She sauntered over to the tavern, leaving a trail of bodies in her wake as she crept from shadow to shadow. She figured it would be the next most likely place to keep a prisoner after the sheriff's office. It too, went up in flames.

Fila was wrecking havoc over there, wasn't she? The presence of the dead upon the streets was testament to the fact that she performed her duties to the letter. Truly, some mercenaries were worth their weight in gold.
Still, their target was yet to be found, and the realization that Ursula had not shared any details of their target's appearance gave her small regret. Even so, the chaos would be enough to draw the prisoner out of hiding.
The witch walked along the edge of the town, her eyes watching and waiting for any fleeing individuals.
Ah, speak of the devil. A pair of human figures were running for the stables, no doubt to escape the burning town, yet...
"We need to get to the barn house," a male spoke as they came near to the stable, "They need to know what's happen... ing."
The other figure ran into the shack and knelt down, a woman's trembling voice spoke, "... No, no, they... they killed... they killed Gentry and Josten... they're killing everyone..."
"This is the judgment of the king for defying him," Ursula's figure appeared against the burning buildings, "Chevious, you have chosen your alliances poorly."
The man turned quickly and drew his sword, his eyes burning in anger, "You...! How... how could yoooooou!!!" He ran forward and attempted to thrust his blade into her belly, only for the blow to be deflected by darkness. Not only that, the rest of his arm flew from his body, thus his body collapsed on the ground with his hand nursing the socket of his missing limb.
"The only mercy I can give you now is death," the witch uttered, "Speak the location of the prisoner, or lead me to him. Rather, you may die together, or apart."
"Run, Odessa!" the man screamed, "Run! Warn the others! RU-"
A large, gaping hole appeared in his chest, and his body crumpled forward. The woman by the stable stood frozen in place, her eyes glazing over in fear.
"Speak," Ursula urged with an increasingly hostile tone, her fingers began to convulse with energy, "Where. Is. Banner. Frost?"

It was as she was walking away from a burning windmill that Fila abruptly realized she did not know the name or appearance of her target. She may have even killed him already. She sits down on a tree stump.
"Ah. Hm. I really should've asked that, huh?" a man charges her with a sword, only to crumple to the ground with a clatter as his arms are removed by misty darkness. She really needed to get a new tome, Flux was starting to protest at the amount of magic she was trying to channel through it. Shame that, it was nearly ancestral by this point. New gear wasn't expensive exactly, but it was surprisingly hard to lay hands on.
The collapsing of the windmill brought her out of her budget musings. She really ought to be doing something. Important to take advantage of the chaos while it lasted, they'd eventually rally even if she had, by her estimate, killed about half the armed people in the village.
Fila hauls herself of the tree stump and wanders back into the village, electing to look for Ursula to get more instructions. She'd remember if she had already killed their target once she had a description. In the meantime, she'd just kill everyone that she came across who wasn't Ursula, just for the sake of thoroughness.

"South... south... farm... big... big red barn... he's there... I swear..." "Good, very good... you have done your country a great service. I shall now relieve you of your duties."
The lifeless body of the woman dropped to the ground as Ursula paced back into the village. There was not much else to do here other than watch it burn to the ground.
Ah, the very thought! What an incredibly fascinating thing to think, as if this was business as usual. No, no, it was business. This was her job, if not duty to her country. A chuckle began to emit from her throat as she began to hum cheerfully, but not before nearly running into another figure, rather, Fila, on the main road. Her knee-jerk reaction had her pull away and prepare a spell, yet her hands lowered after realizing who it was.
"Oh," Ursula grunted, "There you are. I've received some important information." She folded her arms, "Our target--Lord Banner Frost, was moved to a barn toward the south." She coughed into her hand, "... I neglected to share this earlier, but he is an old, wealthy man."
In the light, it seemed as though Ursula's facial age had been reduced. She appeared younger, and far fairer in appearance.

Fila, likewise, had to hurriedly disarm before blasting her ally. She lets out a sheepish giggle as she waves the killing misty that had gathered in her hand off. "Ah, sorry about that Boss!" she says, voice quiet, but still somehow chipper and mirthful."
She nods thoughtfully as she receives the information, the let's out a groan. "Oh, I passed the barn, but didn't even think to burn it down. I was too focused on the trading post. Argh, I hope he hasn't moved." She shrugs. "I mean, I'll track him to the ends of the land if he has, but still."
The elven merc spins on her heel and sets of towards the barn, calling over her shoulder "You're looking great tonight Boss! Let's bag this guy and head back."

... Huh. Someone seems happy. Chipper, even. Maybe things were going better than she thought. Just looking at the burning buildings around them and that sudden buoyant change in personality, perhaps things were still going swimmingly.
Why, even Ursula herself was feeling quite youthful from stealing life forces this evening. As someone who was typically lethargic, she felt brimming with energy!
"Yes, yes," chuckled Ursula with a springy nod. She could get drunk on the atmosphere if it weren't burning.
Ah. This wasn't the time to relish.
"Fila," the witch spoke, "We need to hurry. If he's in the barn, I have no doubt that he has a chance to escape if they have spare horses."

Fila waves off her concerns, slipping into the shadows and rushing to the barn. There had been something with hooves there, right? But was it a horse or a cow? Lord Banner probably wasn't getting anywhere on a cow unless he was far more creative than old wealthy men typically were. But if it was a horse, they were in trouble.
The neighs as she made it to that side of the town confirmed her worst fears. He did have a horse. Whether it was in the barn or he got it from somewhere else was irreleveant, the important thing was that he could not get away she woulod not fail. However... He wasn't riding off, he was talking to someone. They were handing him some sort of a package.
"Were", because Fila immediately obliterated the horse's legs with the first hit, and removed Lord Banner's arm with the second. Her next volley took the head off the person next to him, and took one of his legs out as he tried to make a run for it.
Fila jogged up to the prone body of the man, another bolt of dark mist coalescing in her hand. She grins down on him, the fires of a burning town silhouetting her as she takes aim. With a smile on her lips and a song in her heart, she chirps "Bad luck for you m'Lord!"
And then Lord Banner was no more.

As Fila dealt the killing blow upon Lord Banner, the warm light in the atmosphere became... cold. Blue wisps appeared in the vicinity, and what’s more, a dark figure swiftly approached.
Suddenly, Ursula’s face became aghast. The sight of blue spirits was far too telling, and one of her greatest fears had been realized.
Ursula leapt forward with her hand outstretched, pushing the dark mage aside as an enormous blade flew down upon the witch’s left forearm...
... severing it from her body.
Ursula tumbled to the ground, her single hand cradling the wound as she screamed to the sky. She twisted and kicked as she attempted to compensate for the incredible pain, but to no avail.
Standing over her was a man, draped in the flying blue spirits, his armor was telling, and his weapons? They were no doubt Hoshidan.
“Ara...” the man sighed as he rested his weapon on his shoulder, “... A little more, and I would’ve cut his head off.” He twisted his head around as he brandished his weapon, “Well, that’s okay. You guys are a little late, you know?”
“You... ah... aaah...” Ursula stammered, her body trembled from the shock as she turned her head to glare at him, “They... they anticipated us...? Who... who are you?”
The man glanced down as a white, toothy smile shone in the shimmering light, “You’d know me as a dread fighter, a warrior bred to fight mages like yourselves. A little bird told the ‘ups’ that people were being sent to assassinate Lord Banner! Well, I hate to rain on your fun time, but Banner’s already in the safe confines of Hoshido.”
“Then... ugh...!” the witch spoke shakily, “... then that other man was... he was a body d... double?”
“Damn right he was,” the dread fighter responded with a roll of his shoulders, “You don’t think we’d have our own counters to your operations? We aren’t that dumb, you know.”
