“I’m sorry, sir, but it’s… hard at the moment to let you in.” “Huh? What’s the problem?” “You’re… you know… really big, and you might cause an accident. That’s right!” “Big, huh?! Well, you’re not wrong! Check this out! HUUURRRGH!” “W-wow, i-impressive, yes. Uh… hrm… I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to leave…” “HUUUH? But I gotta see Lulu! I got something to say to her!” “Aurelis-san? I’m sorry, but that m-might be impossible.” “Hahaha! Not for me! ‘Scuze me!” “W-wait, wolfskin-san!” “…” “What do we do?” “… Er… just let the guards inside figure things out…” “… Yeah… he’s just… too big and scary…”
It was a time of festivities in the town of Kitsuki, a historic celebration of the brave warriors who, from the years of Hoshido’s birth, fought and fell in battle in glorious combat. Furthermore, given that it was a town of samurai, many of the events involved martial arts and swordsmanship, along with some calligraphic arts.
That said, there was a live street performance to be made in the center of the town, and while it was that the star performer had briefly gone missing, she was eventually found.
Naturally, there was talk among the residents of her origins, and not necessarily… positive talk. There were citizens, mostly Hoshidan loyalists, gathered outside of the dressing room of Ms. Aurelis, questioning and interrogating the men guarding the door.
“A kitsune trained to dance in Cyrkensia?” “That’s Nohr. Why would they allow such a person to dance for our time-honored festival?” “But she is a Kitsune? Where was she born?” “These things… these things we do not know, but she needs her privacy. Begone!”
As the people crowded around her dressing room, demanding answers to their questions, Lulu sat on the bench, staring at the wall. Everything that had happened today... It had just been... Too much. She felt bad for leaving Kenta in such a hurry, but she felt even worse for making him think that it was his fault she'd ran... She wished she could see him again... Explain what had happened... But she didn't have time for that now. She had to prepare for her show.
Lulu dressed herself in silence, donning a simple, white gown with trails of pink ribbon that would flow behind her arms as she danced. She hoped this would appeal to her Hoshidan crowd...
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
As the kitsune prepared herself to dance before the crowd, a particularly large fellow wearing a hood fumbled through a long thoroughfare of stalls. Given the narrow streets, there was very little room to maneuver. While he cared little that people brushed against him, it was starting to get somewhat suffocating.
"Haha, big man."
Hmmm? Kenta turned his head, only to see a woman carrying her child away anxiously. There wasn't a problem with being so tall and big, was there?
No, there just wasn't wide enough streets to accommodate people like himself.
Suddenly, there was a quick sting to his shins, causing him to stop in his tracks.
"Giant-kun, you lost?"
A rambunctious-looking teenager carrying a long kendo stick spoke below his eye level. There was a gathering of small children behind him, carrying nothing more than twigs for swords.
"Oh, hey, kid. I'm looking for Lulu," he said with a toothy grin, "Have you seen her?"
"You mean the kitsune?" responded the youth, "I heard she's performing for the festival. What is she to you?"
"Wahaha! What is she to me, eh?!" the wolfskin threw his head back in laughter, "She's a friend! I've come to see her perform!"
The children glanced to each other before the leader shrugged his shoulders, "... Sure, okay. I can take you to the town center where she's performing. How about it? Giant-kun?"
As the children guided Kenta to the stage where Lulu would shortly perform, she took deep breaths to mentally prepare herself.
In... And out... In... And out... She thought as she breathed. She had to push aside all of her stress and focus on her performance... She wanted to win some new fans through this performance, and it would certainly not hurt to have some connections in Hoshido. And so, at the direction of her manager, she headed onstage at the correct time...
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
In a little bit of time and true to the word of the youth, the giant and the children reached the town square. Already there was a crowd of spectators generating around the stage, most of them eager to see the fluid dance of the kitsune.
"Here we are, Jumbo-kun," the young leader stated.
"Sheesh, this is the place?" Kenta placed his thumb over his brows to shade his eyes, "Where's Lulu gonna be?"
"Over there on the stage," was the reply. The youth glanced up to the giant, "Say, can I climb on your shoulders? It's kind of hard to see over all these people."
"Hah! That I can do for you for helping me!" the large man knelt down, "Come on, then!"
Much to his surprise, about three children climbed onto his shoulders, with two more hanging off of his back. Not that they were the heavy sort (that was not an issue in the least), but it was a little inconvenient that his eyes were covered by a kid trying not to fall off.
"Hey, grab my forehead instead, I'd like to see, too." "Oh, sorry Jumbo-kun."
And in one way or another, "Jumbo-kun" became a bit of a spectacle himself.
As she prepared to go on stage, Lulu peeked though the curtains for any familiar faces. She knew a few people who lived in Hoshido... Not many, but a few. When she peeked though, however, she was shocked to see Kenta's smiling face out in the audience, with a group of children hanging onto him. She stifled back a giggle as a million thoughts ran through her head. Why is he here? Who are those kids? What'll happen if he calls out to me in the middle of my dancing?. She whimpered fearfully with each thought when a man put a hand on her shoulder.
"Lady Lulu, it's time." Her manager said with a kindhearted smile. Lulu took one last deep breath before walking out on stage...
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
Kenta observed the unfolding scene with ever-enlarging pupils. Indeed, there was Lulu, dressed in a Hoshidan dancing garb with ribbons flowing through the air. There were two other women on the sides of the stage carrying folding fans.
"Wah, her kimono is so, so pretty!" a young girl on his shoulder commented, "I wish I could wear something like that!"
"Shhh, quite, Mika..." the leading youth hushed, he leaned forward a little more with his hand on Kenta's head.
A moment later, the fans of the two women were opened, and their faces were hidden behind them. The stage was now the dancer's. Lulu Aurelis
Lulu took her final deep breath before the performance... And began her dance. Her movements flowed so elegantly... So... freely... It was almost as if she was the simplest cherry blossom tree, and as the wind blew the blossoms would rain down from her branches... This, of course, was the intended effect on the audience. This was further emphasized when men on a high-rise above the stage, who were hidden by the decor, of course, began to sprinkle real blossoms down from above. They flew so gently, almost as if in rhythm with her movements. The kitsune danced around the blossoms, a few landing in her hair, which only added to the spectacle. The dance freed her... Cleared her mind and conscience... This was the reason she danced... Not for the fame, or the money... But because it freed her soul.
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
There was a silence that fell over the spectating crowd. Older folk watched in delight as they observed the movements of the kitsune, while those far younger simply carried interest in her dance.
Naturally, such a dance by such a person was up for interpretation.
"Ah, yes... the traditional sakura blossom dance performed by a descendent of the fox spirits... perhaps this year will be a fruitful one." "Are not foxes the spirits of mischief? Perhaps Kitsuki will fall to ruin this year..."
The words meant little on Kenta's ears, and in the same vein he was not even well-versed in any superstition or folklore that his neighboring Hoshidans had.
"Jumbo-kun."
The wolfskin turned his head to the leader youth.
"Wanna meet her backstage? I can getcha back there easy."
Another teeth-baring smile appeared on his face, yet he spoke in a low, hushed tone, "You bet, kid. I have something I wanna tell her."
"Cool. Get down a little so we don't disturbed anybody." "Sounds good..."
With that, the giant seemed to disappear from the crowd as they began to move toward the rear stage. Lulu Aurelis
After a few more dances, an intermission was called for Lulu to be able to rest before the second and final half of the performance. Overall, she was pleased with the reception she'd seen on the crowd's faces. Most had loved her dance, while few others saw the entire thing as a dark omen. As Lulu headed backstage, however, a peculiar scent caught her nose... It seemed almost... Familiar... But she simply couldn't place it. The calm that the dance had brought to her had also caused her to be able to push the thoughts of today's earlier events away, at least temporarily.
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
The other younger children were left behind to observe the dance upon the shoulders of other adults while Kenta and the leading youth brought him toward the backstage.
"Say, I didn't get your name, kid." "It's Ichiro. I'm just gonna keep callin' you Jumbo-kun." "Haha! Alright, Ichiro! That's totally fine!"
The two of them headed around the next corner to what appeared to be the backstage lot entrance. However, the entrance itself was unguarded, and soft, yet sinister whispers reached Kenta's ears.
Ichiro pursed his lips and folded his arms, "... Weird. They had some guards here earlier. Where'd they go?" He glanced to the giant, who was now sporting a sharp, wolf-like glower. "Whoa, Jumbo-kun? What's wrong? Why're you so angry-looking?"
"My stomach's gone sour, and that ain't a good thing. Stay back here." His tone was hushed and rigid. "O... okay."
Kenta moved forward and peeked around the entrance. There, right in front of the dressing room for the performers, there was a group of ominous fellows waiting nearby. One of them was a fairly-sized brute who bared one, heavily scarred arm out of his yukata.
"A kitsune... that's a hell of a lot of money for us if we pull this off... is Jigen ready?" "Yeah, big bro. He's waiting for her to come down the stairs." "Good. We're gonna make the boss real happy..." "Hey."
The heads turned to see the hulking giant standing at the entrance. Lulu Aurelis
As quickly as the scent had arisen, however, it faded, and Lulu sighed. Oh well... She was sure that she'd figure out who it was later. In the meantime, her break was just about over, and so, she stood once more and headed back toward the stage, awaiting the curtains to rise once more... And when they did, she began her next dance. This one was of a traditional Hoshidan style, but Lulu had added a few movements of her own with her tail.
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
"Whoa, big fella, I ain't ever seen you before, but scram if you know what's good for ya'."
The giant rolled his neck, causing distinct crackling noises to echo in the space. The more amateur ruffians began to back away slowly, intimidated by the glowering snarl on the stranger's face.
"Big bro... he's kind of a big guy, inne'?" "Sh-shaddup. You wanna have at me, fella?" "Hey... ain't no way that he heard us, did he?"
The bare-shouldered brute grit his teeth, "Who're you, huh? What's your deal sniffin' up at us? You wanna die?"
In that moment, a low, reverberating growl arose from his throat as he continued his approach, and he dropped on all fours with his back arching upward.
"No way..." one of the grunts said, "Is... is he a kitsune, too?"
"This might be our lucky day, boys," the head brigand chuckled, "Do 'em in!" Lulu Aurelis
As Lulu danced upon that stage, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was going very, very wrong backstage. She glued a happy expression to her face, trying to hide her uneasiness as she finished her performance. Soon enough, the final number was complete, and Lulu bowed.
"T-thank you all for coming, this evening." She told the crowd happily. "T-this is my first time performing in Hoshido, and I pray that it isn't the last. I love your culture so much more than I can put into words, and I hope that I did your dancing style justice. Have a great rest of your night!" She curtsied as the crowd erupted into applause.
*Yawn...* W-what's with the look?! Hmph... Stupid humans.
As the final applause resounded on the other side of the stage, the sound of exchanging blows began to echo. Suddenly, the sight of a screaming man flying into the air from backstage became a new focus. Perhaps some acrobats foreshadowing a performance?
Not quite.
The flying man crashed on top of a wagon on the side.
“That strength...” the bare-shouldered brigand groaned as he wiped blood from his mouth, “... It ain’t a kitsune’s, that’s for sure...”
Kenta had already changed his form, although his head still remained hidden beneath a cloak. His titanic fists tightened as the would-be kitsune-nappers and assailants raised their weapons to strike him, however, as they swung down at him, he had stepped aside, and with one swipe sent them flying into various crates and objects.
“Grr... our cover’s blown...” the big brother grunted as he unsheathed a katana and licked the edge, “But I guess I’d rather get some payback...” The bandit got back on his feet and brandished his katana with one hand.
However, he glanced to the side and spotted Ichiro watching the cloaked giant. A vicious glint appeared in his eyes as he made his move. At this point, he was desperate to put anything into his advantage. Lulu Aurelis
