Time was lost as the mercenary travelled down the road. Blistering blizzard winds picked up and fell, coating tracks as the endless winter howled through the mountains. What was once familiar became new as the winds finally relented.
Nevertheless, the road Jack had taken had a new establishment upon it. A low fortification sat against the side of a sheer mountain face, with pikes standing at twelve feet tall in the snow. There was the sound of metal parts and of the voices of men.
“Halt! Who goes there?!” a man shouts from the top of the fort. He was armed with a bow, wearing Nohrian armor, but any emblem that was present on his pauldrons was painted over with a red insignia. Fila

Fila trudged through the snow, carrying the unconscious(?) mage on her back. She was going to charge an extra fee for this. A simple hit-and-run had turned into an elaborate plot by the frustrating melodramatics and inconsistent morality of nohr's military mages. She wished they could figure out if they wanted to be a good person or not, at least on an individual basis if not a collective.
The irony of this complaint was not lost on her, but she persevered. Carrying the weight of the operation on her shoulders gave her frustration plenty of fuel.
The fortification caught her by surprise, much to her fury. Despite her earlier words about the uncertainty of the situation in her absence, she hadn't been on the lookout for new developments. She had gotten cocky, assuming things would be as she remembered even as she advised the mages to the contrary. Taking a deep breath, she calls back "Fila Filigree, of the Ice Tribe!" She rolls her head, the hat slipping off and dropping into her hand, revealing the ice tribe-blue of her hair. She wasn't sure whether they'd be able to see it at this distance, but anything to avoid getting skewered would help.

The man atop the barricade squinted hard, then turned aside to yell at someone with words not clearly understood. A moment later, a gate began to open inwards.
“Move aside, Ice Triber!” the fellow above yelled down. A large enforcement of soldiers began to march from the mouth of the barricade, armed to the teeth with swords, lances, and axes. They passed glances to the Ice Tribe woman, but they spoke nothing to her.
However, a tall man with a heavy set of armor shifted out of the group. His hair was dark, and a large beard crossed his face.
“You there,” he spoke gruffly, “Ice Triber. You lost?” A Nohrian insignia on his right pauldron was sanded out and marked over by a symbol of a sword thrust through a crown. Fila

Fila steps to the side, watching the armor soldiers carefully before turning to address the man. She gives a quick nod, briefly glancing past him to look at the fort. "I rather thank I am. Don't remember a fort out here." She gives a meaningful glance to is right pauldron.
"Or a new nation, for that matter. A lot can change in a few years, I guess. How far am I from home, if you don't mind me asking? I appear to be utterly lost."
She of course new perfectly well how far it was and where to go. However, years of being a door guard and negotiating with uncaring employers had given her an amazing poker face, and her expression was only one of mild consternation and general gruffness.

The man snorted rudely, “A long way, Ice Triber. You stand before Murdock Fort, a home of those loyal to Nohr, but not her king...” His sunken eyes studied Fila up and down her figure, but his gaze rests upon the large object (Ursula) resting on her shoulders.
However, he asks such instead: “What is your business here? I thought the captain told your people to stay out of the conflict. Said he won’t have you folks risking your life and limb to get your lands back.” That said, he spat on the ground, “... damned fool.”
"That's a thorny stance to take..." she murmurs in response to his 'pledge'. He could hardly call her on it; even the most naive fool knew what a dangerous sentiment that was to take, especially in wartime when the already brutal empire required and demanded absolute loyalty. The man did not strike her as the sort to overreact, but his reaction would give her a clue. She had too little information; she misliked playing her hand as much as she was about to.
"I haven't been home in a long time. I knew there was trouble though, and I felt I should at least make sure my family hadn't done something stupid. What happened?" Her question was more plaintive than she would've liked, but underneath her intention to complete the mission, there was a kernel of real worry for her home. Perhaps it would work to her advantage here, even if the sign of weakness turned her stomach.
"Please. I want to know what in the world is going on."

"Oh, I'll tell you what happened alright," the brusque man grunted, "The commander moved us all the way out here so he could win the hearts of the people by pushing back Nohrian forces. Get 'em to back us up, that sort of thing." He glanced to the advancing troops, "Trouble is that the fort at the mountain entrance is a lot more resilient than we thought, and hell, I'm just a hireling, but we're wasting men and resources."
"Jensen!" the archer yelled from the top, "Hurry it up! We gotta close the door!"
"Crap," the mercenary grunted, he glanced back at Fila , "Listen, I don't know you other than the fact you're an Ice Triber. We got... ZERO reinforcements right now, so if you can do anything to convince the commander to call in some support, I'm hiking it back home to Marcarth, 'cause screw this. I ain't wasting my life for something so pointless." He glanced to the body once more, but he beckoned for Fila to follow him.
Fila raises an eyebrow before starting slightly at the archer. Sloppy, to be surprised as she was by something so easily anticipated. The chaos was throwing her off far too much. Anywhere else she would have easily rolled with the punches, but this was her home. Immature as it was, a certain part of her had unconsciously assumed it would be static, an unchanging sanctuary to return to if things went wrong. The fact that she had left in the first place because it had begun to change showed the idiocy of that childish assumption, but she had not choice but to confront its existence now.
"I'll see what I can do. I can't make any promises." She shifts the weight of the witch on her shoulders. It wasn't comfortable, but she wasn't quite ready to part with her hostage and employer. "If nothing else, perhaps I can dissua- ah, make sure he knows exactly what to expect from these parts."

“Right, right, whatever,” Jensen threw his hands in the air, “Come on in.”
Thus, the mercenary led her into the fort. It was a ramshackle little place, with walls made with tree trunks and holes filled in with stones. There were only a few troops present, all of which were minding their own business or watching the outside. The ground was wet and muddy, naturally so because of the large fire that sat in the middle to warm the fort. There was a cave opening toward the back end of the fort, which led to a small maze of rooms.
“The commander is in the war room,” the mercenary pointed to the cave mouth, “Let’s go.”
At that moment, Ursula’s eyes opened slightly. Her vision was disoriented, but she could sense the sensation of the fire.
Though it was hidden by the cloth-wrapped figure on her back, Ursula would feel Fila tense slightly. She knew she was awake. When no one was looking, she shifted slightly, so that Ursula was draped at more forward angle so that the witch's dangling fingers would brush across Fila's Flux tome, still hidden by the heavy winter gear they were both wearing. Fila hoped her passenger got the message. Her Wind Tome was on her otherside, within easy reach of her dominant hand yet also hidden. She had planned for this when she first hoisted Ursula onto her back, banking on the idea that an academy trained witch could hit harder than she could.
Fila nods to him. "Thank you. I'll be of whatever help I can... Though honestly, with how much things have changed I only hope my best is good enough."
She steps past him into the room, taking in every detail as inconspicuously as she can.

And so it was that the commander was in the war room. He was tense, leaned over on the table, his eyes glued to a map of the region. The man himself was a large fellow, his body covered in the heavy armor of a knight. His head had no helmet upon it, but his lance sat at the ready.
“Commander Grien,” Jensen spoke up, causing the man to lift his head, “Got someone here to speak with you.”
Grien grimaced, his heavy brow and sunken eyes fixated onto Fila .
“... For the last time, Jensen! We’re not enlisting the Ice Tribe for help!” the man practically shouted from across the table, “We’re here to—“
“Hey, shut the hell up!” the mercenary suddenly roared back, causing the commander to flinch, “We’re getting in the deep here! Word is that the fort received heavy reinforcements not too long ago. Face it, Grien! We’re done, and I’m handing your ass to Nohr for the glory of King Garon!” He suddenly reached onto his belt and threw a bottle at Ursula’s body. The impact caused it to shatter, spilling its contents over her and Fila.
To their surprise, the bottle was a concoction, replenishing both their strength.
“Gah!” the witch gasped as she fell off of Fila’s shoulder. A tendril had also reached to the Flux Tome on the mercenary’s belt, pulling it into her hand.
Before he could react to this sudden turn of events, Ursula lifted her hand to the face of the captain of the rebellious forces and unleashed a dark blast at his head!

The blast instantly knocked his head off of his shoulders, throwing it into the wall. Two fighters nearby immediately unsheathed their weapons, their eyes widened in shock.
”T... traitor!” they shrieked.
“Nah,” Jensen smirked, “Something called a double agent.”
“Damn it all, Jensen,” Ursula hissed as she rubbed her shoulder, “That bottle hurt more than it should’ve.” At that moment, the sounds of footsteps resounded in the hall behind them.
“Well, nuts,” the mercenary shook his head, “I’ll keep our rear in check. Take those rebels out so we can get out of here!”
Fila leans to the side to try and ease Ursula's fall to the floor, unfastening and tossing aside her Flux tome to the witch. In the same smooth motion, she brings up her wind tome and sends out a two blades of wind, the icy cold of her home empowering the magic.

The twin blades of wind bisect the unfortunate fighter, as Fila quickly sidesteps the falling remains. "Right. Let's get out of here. I assume we have some means of getting back to Nohr? A ship perhaps?" Fila glances around the room, before grabbing the map off the table before the blood split on it, quickly stuffing it into her coat.

“Yes, let’s,” Ursula nodded to Fila, “Jensen, we leave! Now!”
The mercenary cut down two more men, then proceeded to follow after them. “Haha! I could keep this up all day, you know!”
“Yes, I am sure!” the witch huffed, “Take the lead, will you?!”
“Yeah! Follow me!”
That said, the mercenary bolted down the mouth opening, taking a back door that led into a dark tunnel. Wind whistled through it, and a frosty breeze drifted inside.
“Keep it tight, ladies,” said he as he lit a torch, “And don’t lag behind!” He held the brazier high above his head and broke into a sprint.
