Fila hums softly, sifting through her memories a moment. "Very long ago. Several years, at least. There was a job I took that brought me out to this area, but my contract ended before I was anywhere near my old home. However, the cave was of some traditional importance. Its likely still there, but its also well known. I wouldn't want to rely on it unless things are desperate."
"Most rebellions are minority of the populace until it becomes a majority problem. If the Ice Tribes are in open rebellion they may well siege a fort, but if they're still only pockets they've likely just strangled supplies. However, if they've banded together with this deserter and his men that we're looking for... The Ice Tribe knows this area far better than anyone the military could have sent here. I would lower your estimates on how many they would need to take a fort by about five soldiers."
She pauses, apparently realizing that could be insulting to the Nohrian military, before offering a half-hearted "No offense to glorious Nohr, of course."

Ursula nodded her head, “What you said is true: any native citizen knows the land better, enhancing their chances of successful assault. I daresay we may even be at risk of ambush in any place here since snow is an excellent camoflage.”
“U-uwaaah...” Lucas shuddered, his eyes began to dart here and there. Polis’ back seemed to slouch anxiously, “C-captain, I hate it when you point these things out...”
“I am simply considering something that you should be aware of,” the witch commented, “Here we are, a five man party against a demographic five, no, perhaps even twenty times our size. It is a simple deduction that we are outnumbered.” She turned her head, almost looking past Lucas’ horse to Jack, “That being said, we’re a specialized task force. Even if we are faced with greater odds, we adapt to the situation and move along as best we can to minimize casualties. We are no simple foot soldiers like those who reside inside forts...” Once again, she smiled with a most malevolent grin, “... We are assassins.” Fila

Fila inclines her head. She'd suspected for awhile, but Ursula confirmed it: Assassins. It made sense, counting in the nature of the mission and the composition of the squad. Three dark mages had no business being assigned to anything but assassinations, since they'd be rubbish at any other job. Well, that suited Fila just fine. Its not as if she hadn't taken assassination jobs before.
"If so, then we need more information. Hmm... Ashton." She says, glancing over to the Dark Flier. "How good is your visibility at the higher altitudes? There should be a large clearing with a sheer cliff with a channel wide enough for three carts, side-by-side. A lot of supplies go through it, since its decently sheltered from the weather. With the Nohrian forts further into this region, any fortification around it would be able to divert a lot of supplies. But the rebels couldn't do that unless they were very secure in their control of the region; its not particularly defensible from the other end. No cover from magic or arrows."
Fila looks back to Ursula, not wanting to overstep her bounds. "Either now, or once we've found a place to hold up for the night, it might be good to do a cursory check of the region. At the very least, we'll know if the military is completely overwhelmed or not."

Ashton’s brow furrowed as he stroked his chin, “Well, we dark fliers must have the vision of hawks, otherwise we are better off not being a dark flier at all.” He turned his head to the captain, “That said... it is a bit of a risk to leave you all unattended.”
“We’ll duck down someplace,” Ursula replied, “An embankment of snow. Go and see what the eyes of birds have to offer. The more we know about our layout, the better.”
“As you command, captain,” the corporal replied, “Ascend, Priscilla! Let us fly!” With a grunt, the ebony pegasus opened its wings and took to the skies.
“You’re sure about this, captain?” Polis murmured as she eyed Jack in suspcion, “We’re too vulnerable without Ashton...”
The witch glared at her, “Silence, Polis. I know what I’m doing.” She pointed to a small hill nearby, “We make for that embankment and await his return.” Thus, the squad swiftly hid themselves behind a hill of snow, out of the wind. When they had settled behind it, Ursula beckoned Jack to her, “I desire that we attempt to inspire confidence in our less willing companions... perhaps you can... say something to help them take their minds off of the, ah, insurmountable odds?” Fila
Fila looks at the squad with a look a minor confusion. More information would give them more protection in the long run then not having the dark flier for a few moments. If they encamped as they were, their collective magic would evaporate any enemies that wouldn't be able to fight their entire squad anyways. These were supposed to be professional soldiers, why were they so flimsy of morale?
Fila goes over to the Captain. She makes a small motion to the distracted squadmates. "Why are they so...?" she asks, gesturing with confusion. "There's only so much I can say without being unrealistic. I'll do what I can, but I have to ask: does some superior of yours have it in for you Captain?" She looks genuinely concerned for Ursula's help.
After getting an answer, she puts on an almost foolproof smile, and heads back to the rather wavering Troubadour and Dark Mage, clapping them both on the back with a gesture that brimmed with confidence and showed an unassailable lack of regard for their personal space.
In a voice that manages to sound irritatingly boistrous yet someone quiet enough to avoid carrying beyond their encampment, Fila says "Ah, quit your worrying. We're a small group, and its a big region. Any enemies we encounter before the main forts will either be small enough to dispatch, or large enough to avoid. You're soldiers of Nohr, quite whinging and keep your head down."

Ursula simply shut her eyes at her question, and, in one sense, answering Jack’s question with a heavy-hearted yes. There was simply no way that she would confess her standing far as her rank was within the Nohrian army...
Polis’ face crumpled at the sudden friendliness of the elf, but Lucas immediately beamed.
“Haha, you’re right!” the troubadour nodded, he puffed out his chest proudly, “I mean, I ain’t scared of no turncoats!”
The dark mage hugged herself tighter, “I just... I just want to get this over with.”
“This isn’t your first time in the field, Polis,” Ursula spoke, her tone became a little more strict, “I do not remember recruiting a frightened child into my rank.”
“I...” Polis stammered, “... Forgive me, captain. I... I do not wish to place blame on anyone, but... you were talking about how we’re outnumbered and I could not help but feel hopeless...”
“Hmph,” the witch folded her arms, “That is all that bothered you? Then take Jack’s words into consideration.”
“Y... yes...” Polis nodded, she turned her body to the elf, “... I appreciate your sentiment.”
Shortly after she spoke, Ashton had returned, landing several feet away and approaching at a steady pace. “Hail, captain. I spotted the fort you spoke of earlier, and thankfully, the flag of Nohr still flies.” Yet, his head dipped, “... But to their misfortune, it seems they’ve been holding their ground against an unknown number of foes over the past week.” His gaze shifted to Jack, “... Truth be told, it seems they’re on their last legs. We must come to their assistance, or the fort may fall within the next attack.”
Ursula knit her brow and sighed, “... If we assist them, we will be revealing our presence to the deserters. Their leader may continue to conceal himself...” Her answer caused the other three to give glum faces.
Fila looks at the assembled, group her face dropping back to its normal flat expression. "Which is more important; your target or Nohr's foothold in this region? Its not terribly hard to close off all supply lines from the mainland to the inner Ice Tribe region... If you can't forage within that region, and you're cut off from supplies when the worst winter hits..."
She shrugs, trying to sound apathetic. "I give them maybe a month before they start resorting to eating the dead and burning supplies to keep warm. Maybe longer, if they have a few native loyalists. But they'll still be revealed as vulnerable. It all depends on how strong the rebellion really is I'm afraid, both in military strength and influence."
"If you're confident Nohr can commit to a major military campaign against the Ice Tribe, feel free to let them through. Otherwise, from the sounds of it, they'll have that fort in hand and well-guarded before Winter ends. Then the military gets the always enviable task of trying to dislodge the native settlements from their own fortification, in region with oh so many environmental weapons to be turned against the unwary."
"Besides, we might get some prisoners out of it."

With all of Jack’s words considered, the witch bowed her head and placed a hand to her lip contemplatively.
“The target is important,” Ursula hissed, her brow knit together, “But we need that fort if we cannot leave until the next morning... but coming to assistance will waste daylight.”
“Captain,” said Ashton, “What if you sent me and Polis to assist in the defense of the fort?”
The woman’s eyes lifted to him.
“Look, the insurgents won’t expect a magic-weilding pegasus flier and a dark mage,” he reasoned, “An assassination is harder to carry out with a larger group, anyhow.”
Ursula shook her head at the suggestion, “I would not think Polis would be so willing, would she?”
“... I would be, actually,” commented the dark mage with a little fold of her arms, “Ashton is right.”
“Th-then I should go, too!” Lucas chimed in, “The troops need someone to patch them up!”
If there would be any look of shock on the captain’s face, it would be in the form of her eyebrows arching and a twitch in her eye.
Yet, she could not deny the logic. A smaller group for an assassination was more advantageous than a larger one. Yes, the comfort of the amenities they provided would not be with them...
No, no, this was actually the best case scenario. A plan began to concoct itself in the witch’s brain, one that caused her teeth to show in her grin.
“Haha... ahaha, very well,” said Ursula as she raised her head, “Go then. Hold the fort until we return.”
At her words, the faces of her three subordinates brightened.
“Really, Captain?!” Lucas nearly leapt in his saddle.
“We won’t let you down, captain,” Ashton nodded, “The fort will await your return with the Nohrian banner held high.”
“Be safe, captain,” Polis sighed, she glared at Jack, “You’d better take care of her... I will hunt you down if you don’t both return in one piece.”
“That’s enough of that,” the witch grunted, “Get going already.”
With a salute, three responded, “Yes, ma’am!” Therefore, they left for the defense of the fort.
Now alone, Ursula glanced to Jack, “You have a very important role to play in my plan. I hope you’re ready to hear it.” Fila

'Jack' cracks a grin at Polis' words, giving a short, yet sweeping bow. "I will do my utmost to abide by the terms of my contract, Polis."
Jack watches them go, before turning back to Ursula.
"A special plan? Beyond 'sneak around and evaporate people with dark magic'? Oh, this is an important operation, I feel under qualified now." Fila voice's suddenly goes from flat to supremely sarcastic the instant Ursula's subordinates are out of earshot.
"Let's hear it then; I don't like being here, but missions that aren't straight brawls between two armies usually pay better, so you certainly have my attention, Captain."

“First off,” Ursula scoffed as she brushed her chilled hands together, “All this talk about burning bridges and whatnot, I get it, I do. I’ve done that myself.” Her eyebrows furrowed as her eyes locked onto Jack’s, “But it’s just the two of us now. Two little women against an innumerable force of trained Nohrian deserters. If there's any time I can say I've been screwed over by my superiors, it's this very mission.” She glared at Jack as she folded her arms tightly, “So do me a damn favor and tell me just how deep in the water you are with your people, because I need to know if my idea is a death sentence or not.” Fila

The only sign Jack gives of her inward dismay is a raised eyebrow and the sudden freezing of all other facial expressions. In a rather chilly tone, she murmurs "There's really only one reason for you to ask that, huh?"
After a moment to listen to Ursula with a decidedly frosty disposition, she sighs, and gives a defeated shrug. "Waste of a perfectly good alias then. I was really hoping to avoid this." She looks down, muttering to herself for a moment and doing some speedy memory-searching and social calculations.
After gathering her thoughts, she looks back up to Ursula. "It depends. There is no 'across the board' reputation here; I'm the worst of the worst to the fanatics, and anywhere from fondly missed to desperately desired among everyone else. I think I can guess your plan. The question of if it will get us killed depends entirely upon just how much of the Ice Tribe has decided to rebel, particularly among the leaders. The only way to know for sure is to go take a look."

The witch sucked air through her teeth, “So, it is as I anticipated. Very well, then.” She slid a hand beneath her chin and tapped her lips, “... As this is an assassination, we’re here for only one man, not a whole battalion. We need only get close to the target, pick him off, then escape.”
Ursula began to pace, “The simplest method is the guise of surrender. You are an infamous outcast, while I am a Nohrian squad captain who has ended the lives of hundreds of deserters. If the will of the deserters is stronger than the people’s, then they will hate me, more than enough to convince the people that you are turning over a new leaf. Going under the impression that you desire to return to good graces would be the catalyst for success.” She squinted at her as an insidious grin crept on her face, “... That said... this could go both ways... thus, I need your fullest cooperation.”

Suddenly, the witch’s hand let loose a tendril of darkness, slapping itself across Jack’s waist!
“Come, Jack!” Ursula exclaimed with a crazed smile as both her arms became covered in darkness, “We need some bruises to convince them!” Fila1-100
Fila grimaces as Ursula lays out her plan. 'Simple' was not the word she would have used. Any gambit that required surrender, even a fake one, left a bad taste in her mouth. It felt like a betrayal, and could go horribly wrong oh so many ways as well.
The whip of darkness caught her off guard, Fila letting out a surprised "wha-" as her own hand snapped a bolt of darkness off on instinct. qlIBBgzA1-100 (ACC 81, DMG 10, CRIT 3) A sizable blast of magic would hit Ursula square in the chest, Fila looking horrified at both herself and Ursula. “UGH,” Ursula grunted as Jack’s attack struck her dead center. She flew a few feet through the air before she fell into the snow. Her body trembled as she pulled herself off of the ground, staggering as she put herself back on her feet. “Ha... haha... you didn’t hold back, did you... cough... cough-cough... very... very well.” A line of dark red blood fell from the edge of her lips, then another from her right nostril. “... This... this will do... it seems you’re taking the lead from here on out...”
The witch sat up and spat blood into the snow, “You know the plan, Jack... get me close enough to the target...” She pulled the bounty of their target from her dress sleeve, “... This is evidence. I am an assassin that you killed as proof of your... ‘desire’ to return. They’ll believe it... I... promise...”
The words were still on her lips as her eyelids fluttered closed.
Fila staggers back, arm still outstretched and swirling with shadows. She watches, frozen in abject horror as Ursula gives her her marching orders then collapses. She shudders, slowing her breathing.
After calm as settled, she snaps her hand in a quick, contained motion. The shadows flash out of existence, as she walks over to the witch. The mask is back on. she tips her hat down, regarding her now self-incapacitated boss.
"You know, you could have at least done this a little closer to civilization." She quickly hoists the blessedly-lightweight witch's body and sets a quick pace down a back route she had neglected to mention to the group. She wanted to be well away before the squad returned and got the wrong idea.
