"And I kid you not! The stupid dastard stood there, wide eyed as I just plucked things off his table and walked off. I waited." The ruffian masquerading as a soldier held a finger up. "I waited and he didn't say a thing. So I just made off, must of cost him at least a day's wages."
"Damn Will. I gotta try that one." Campbell replied.
Ethan Leigh sighed. The room was small, composed of several beds and a few round tables. How people were able to sleep with those two talking so loud was beyond him. It really didn't matter. Nohr soldiers were able to sleep despite everything they've done. A few words wouldn't be enough to stir them.
The unwilling soldier laid motionless on his bottom bunk. The mattress above him was depressed by the weight of some unruly man. Imagination painted pitch skies above him, traces of a home that abandoned him. Mental pictures couldn't exist alongside their words. The way they bragged about their deeds was particularly disgusting and for a second the only thing worth imagining was him slaughtering those the entire battalion. Men, horses, and strange beasts should all be slain. It would never happen. It couldn't. Ethan would be killed before he even made it out. Make it out.
Ethan stood up and made his way to the door. "Leigh where you going?" Campbell asked.
"Outside." He replied. "I need some air." "Don't take too long pal. Remember, we got second watch." "I won't be long, just feeling restless." "Gotcha."
Ethan stepped into the night. Compared to the frigid mountains surrounding the Ice Tribe, this place was an eternal summer. Gray eyes rose as he walked. How free the sky was. Nothing held it back. Nothing could. It had complete freedom and the aging man was jealous. There was no freedom for him. His life would play out, completely dependent on how the military said it. He'd die for a cause he didn't believe in. No. He wouldn't.
His pace quickened. Turning down a alley, the wanderer found himself closer to Windmire's streets. Streets filled with the enemy, filled with his oppressors and walking the streets wouldn't be smart. Ethan moved closer towards the district's high walls. Only fools and outlaws would be around them so late at night. The deserter scoffed. Which one was he?

Guarding, patrolling, and protecting. These were the three actions of a knight at the capitol of Windmire. Not just any knights could be here after all for it was the residence of King Garon and his children.
It went without saying that Northella Arnasson a knight-in-training could only be here because her loyalty had been proven to the point the soldiers and people here trusted her. She was a tall lady, slightly over six feet tall, and well-built with highly toned muscle. Something that showed quite well underneath a set of standard black Nohrian armor the army had given her here. She walked though with the helmet and visor given to her up so that she could see in the darkness. She had no torches after all and the ones hanging in the streets didn't really help her much.
"Clunk!" "Clunk!" "Clunk!"
Her armor echoed through the streets while she held a spear on her shoulder. She was the enforcer of this part of town and if anyone happened to get into the city she would literally block their exit with her bulk and disallow them from leaving. She didn't feel she would have to do that tonight until the sounds of footsteps rounded the corner and a young man in dark jacket with bright blue hair suddenly entered her view.
She got into a low stance as quick as she could and held her spear out in front of her crying, "Stop! What are you doing on this street!" Her bronze tipped lance would be pointed right at him unless he somehow managed to slide by her. Unfortunately she couldn't move fast so it was likely he would do just that. She could sense he probably was headed for the city's walls since that was close to where they were currently.
Streets stood empty behind him. Garbage bins and lower stairwells offered darker corners to hide and catch his breath. He'd take the time to talk himself out of this crazy impulse. That's what it was. Captain had bashed that word into his mind multiple times. At least now he'd recognize it.
It wasn't too late. The man could give in, turn around now, and no one would know. He found himself running towards the gate. Racing ahead, he glanced behind him. Streets remained empty. Ethan rounded the corner and froze. A woman stood before him. Bronze death threatened him. The first thing that came to his mind was a blatant lie.
"Woah! Hold on!" He shouted. His hands jumped up. "Look I was just going for a run! I'm military like you. Okay? Just having trouble sleeping and trying to blow off some energy."

"You're a soldier?" Northella stated quickly pulling her spear back and latching it to a holster strapped to her back.
She took a moment to think before adding, "Fine, you can pass but you shouldn't be out here at night like this unless you're on guard duty. Go back to the barracks and don't let me see you again."
The reason being is that she had almost skewered this approaching man in the dark and really didn't want to have this happen again, even by accident. She could see his hands held nothing in them as he held them up and that he was more built along the lines of a warrior then a mage. In this regard she knew she wouldn't be tricked so easily and blasted by magic, but she still felt a sense of wariness when near him perhaps because she was out so late and a bit tired.
She let out a yawn under the dim lights above them and stated, "Don't snicker if you're going to. I'm someone who has been out here nearly all day and night."
His hand fell slowly and came to rest at his side. "You're a bit jumpy, even if you are tired. I'll be on my way. But hey, take a break. The world isn't going to end because of one watch man. Alright?" Ethan scooted by the woman. "Just take it easy. I'll just be on my way."
"Leigh!" Campbell's questioning voice pierced the night. Annoyance laced his loud word. "Leigh where the hell did you go?" The voice grew louder, suggesting Campbell drew near.
Ethan made no attempt to hide the shock on his face. He glanced towards the lingering echoes, muttering. "Fuck." He looked to the muscular stranger. Desperate eyes met her own. "Please." He said meekly. "I know you don't know me or owe me a damn thing, but that man can't find." He looked down, then back up to her. "I can go back. I won't." Ethan started backing away. "Don't tell him where I'm going. Please." Ethan backed away, finding himself pressing against the cold wall of some forgotten alley. He was cornered.
A pale man of blond hair rounded the corner. His face was red and he was breathing heavy. "You there guard." He spoke with false authority. "I'm looking for a man from my unit. He has blue hair and a dark jacket. He should have returned by now and I was sent to find him."

"Okay just be-" Northella started to answer. Yet she stopped speaking in her tracks the moment Ethan scooted around her. The reason was someone was shouting out the name of another being who was lost. Northella sensed her new acquaintance's disposition change almost immediately when he heard the gruff voice shout what could only be his name. How she knew this was because he stumbled back into the alley wall behind him and told her not to speak of him.
Northella only found time to frown and place her hand against the wall above his head just as the man was approaching. "You're in trouble," she whispered letting a cheeky smile flash across her face. Her lips curled upwards even more as she uttered, "I'll help you out you poor sap. You'll have to repay me though." She looked him up and down and added, "You're about my age right? If so, take me on a date somewhere and make my days as a knight here more interesting you sorry loser. Otherwise, if we ever meet again I'm making you my forced sparring partner since you have such agile feet. I won't take no for an answer either way so don't try to dissuade me. I'll throw you to the dumb man coming my way."
She managed to stop speaking in time though to hear the man stop before her and quickly turned around to block Ethan's entire body with hers. "Uh, you said something fellow officer?" Northella answered giving him a friendly wave. "I've not seen that man. If I did I'd know. You don't think he could have given you the run around and gone the other way do you?"
"Ethan? Giving me the slip?" Campbell laughed. "Lady, I think, you don't know him. The guy spends too much time day dreaming to think of some getaway plan." He chuckled again. "Ethan giving me the slip. That's a good one. Probably just turned back like a scared puppy when he heard me calling." He adjusted his stance. Standing upright, she saluted the guardswoman. "As you were then."
The blonde man turned around, continuing his search at a slower pace. He seemed to have bought his own story. Ethan breathed a sigh of relief and scooted out from his corner. Gray eyes had dulled and his naturally bored look had returned. The man's anxious air had died down and he stood almost calmly. Lips parted, he watched Campbell walked away with an annoying hint of confidence. He turned towards the woman.
"Thank you. Seriously. You're right though. I do owe you one and normally, I'd gladly take someone as pleasant as you out for a romantic night, but truthfully I don't plan on sticking around that long." Ethan glanced back down the road. Campbell had vanished from sight. "I want to be as far away from this place as I can by morning." Ethan found himself admitting. He stopped and glanced to the ground. Confusion overtook his scared face. "I have no idea why I'm telling you this. You're just as likely to turn me in and I don't want to fight you. You seem like a good person. You're not my enemy and I don't want to make you one, but I will fight for my freedom."

Northella turned back to face Ethan and gave him a thumbs up once Campbell vanished. Then after hearing Ethan's reponse after her rescuing him she grit her teeth especially when he got this scared look on his face when he was done looking down the road and telling her of his plans. "You-you're just going to leave!"
Northella clenched her fists hard and stepped towards him knocking into him with her left shoulder. "I don't like that answer one bit, especially us fighting without you telling me why you're leaving. You will stay and/or go on a date with me and spar with me. Otherwise, you're going to need something far more elaborate to get out of here since I won't help you. Might I suggest a wyvern as a potential escape option?"
She wanted to pummel him into the floor once she heard what she did but that would get her disciplined and hurt her fine record. It was better to help the guy potentially leave of his own accord and if he knew anything of flying getting out that way was better then on foot. She wasn't the only one performing guard duty tonight and if this man before her with his stupid gray eyes even clamored up the wall he might see why. Along its guard rails there were archers and mages sitting around ballista and magic orb machines. Both were capable of skewering him on the spot if turned and aimed at him. On the off chance these people did not decide to kill him that way they could just shoot at him with their own bows and magical energies.
There was even an off chance a retainer or two, even the royal family members were inspecting the guard posts tonight. This guy she had just run into didn't stand a chance yet that was especially true if they were around. Leo was famous for teleporting people as well as doing other nasty things at will. Xander was a brave but foolish Paladin and Elise and Camilla for all their feminine charm were more then capable of blasting this poor mercenary with their own devastating magic. Northella had only heard these things in rumor and as such weren't sure if they were true since they were rumors after all but nobody betrayed the Nohrian kingdom for no reason and lived to tell the tale. Only those with a real goal as to why they were escaping this place ever had a shot but even they faced the chopping block more often than not. She could only chuckle at the fact he wanted to fight her since in a heart beat she had the potential to call all these people on a whim with a simple whistle blow from a metal whistle nestled in the folds of her armor.
Ethan stumbled back. A defensive hand reached for his sword. He was seconds away from drawing it until the woman spoke up. Stone faced, he listened to every word and nodded with a sigh. "Fine." He said. Defeat clear in his somber voice. "Follow me." The deserter turned back into the lonely alley that had been his death trap moments earlier. If he was going to explain to her, he'd do it surrounded by the false comfort of stone walls.
"Why am I leaving?" He started. "Because I don't believe in their cause. I come from the Ice Tribe. This war with Hoshido isn't mine. My people have literally forced me from my home to fight and die for something I don't believe in. If I'm going to die because of Nohr, it's because I died trying to escape. I refuse to die for some selfish king's bullshit decisions."
Ethan sighed. Placing his back against the wall. "I'll be honest with you. I've only had a little training. I'm no good in a fight. A sparring session with me would simply be you pummeling me. And I'm not that interesting. I'm just a talkative fisherman with more tales than interesting personality traits. A date with me would be boring. But what I do have is passion and a burning desire to be free."
"Why would you offer a wyvern?" He asked. "What would helping me escape like that possibly get you?"

Northella followed Ethan down the dark alley ways of the city. She was glad she hadn't witnessed him pull her sword on her and cleave her two, otherwise she would have had to fight back. She listened to his story though and sighed. He seemed to be the kind of man who hated their ruler. It wasn't uncommon but to do so was good enough reason to run for the king typically killed those kinds of people.
She watched him lean against the wall and stated back to him, "You don't seem boring. In fact, I would enjoy pummeling you for your transgressions rather then the typical beheading that's required when you speak like you do. It's a waste on the king's part if you ask me to simply kill someone who disagrees with him. He should just have you sent to the front lines and wasted on Hoshido's peons." She leaned in towards the wall with her bulky armor and placed her right hand next to the side of his head. If he tried to run the only way he'd be doing so now is if she was hit in the head or somehow tripped.
She stared at him intensely, covering him with her shadow, and added, "Even if you're a fisherman, you've got spunk to wield a sword and for that you might not be as boring as you think. You just lack any sort of guts in your body. But... I'll be offering you a wyvern today because your stupid ideals of freedom may take you somewhere in the future and you're not getting out of here without one. Oh, and if I help you I pretty much can cover my tracks tonight by saying you either coerced me into helping you flee. Your friend was looking for you from before and I doubt he'd fully believe you weren't hiding behind me or in same alley as me. There's only so many pathways in this city after all. He'll find you soon and then I will have to break you in two."
"Peons?" Ethan repeated. His dull eyes softened. "Do you know them? Every single one of them? They're people, just like you and me. Maybe you don't see it. Who could blame you? We're both products of what the world has made us and I can't let this world make me a killer. You want to pummel me? Fine go right ahead."
Ethan snatched her free hand and placed it on his head. "Go on. Let me have it." His sincere look was a challenge, one that he wasn't fully sure of. "But lady, you don't seem fully like them. Maybe you don't believe me, but I can feel it. Or else you would have just killed me or tried to turn me in.
"Maybe I don't have guts, but it takes something to abandon your life twice. Especially when both times meant death. I'll gladly take your help and hopefully I can do something for you too. Imagine it." Ethan's hand came up and he reached for his inner story teller. "There's a world out there where the sun actually shines, where you're not surrounded by thick walls and weak flames. Where you don't have to stay bored. There's always that chance they'll find out you helped me escape and the person above you might not take pity. So. Why not come with me?" Ethan smiled.
His promises of a new world came strictly from a position of self-preservation. The military had taught him that groups were far better than running on his own and he wasn't entirely comfortable with leaving her here and wondering if she ever blew his cover. It was far safer to travel with her than leave her be.

Northella continued to glare at Ethan truly wanting to punch the fool. Instead, she remained leaning against the wall and listened to his story teller mode kick in. She watched his raised hands, his words, and his smile all come out before her and slowly her free hand went and headed towards the cusp of his shirt. She intended to lift him off the ground if he didn't stop her but found herself stopping short and bumping her gauntlet into his.
"I don't like the idea of freedom the way you speak of it. It's just too chock full of baloney. I could never be free even if I left these walls I'm banded to the military that's here in Nohr no matter what. Yet because you seem like an overly dumb, nice guy I may ust come with you." Northella announced now smiling back at the mercenary. "I wouldn't want you to die before you even step foot out of here simply because seeing you try to escape is semi-interesting."
She pulled back from the wall and pat her armor down to make sure he hadn't done anything to it while she was close to him. She didn't feel a thing odd with it so she took up her spear and simply asked, "Where to? I know I said we should use wyverns to escape but I want to see if you know where they're housed. If we can't find them we'll leave the city a different way. I'll give you a hint though to start. It's a rather tall stone tower near here along the wall."
"Overly dumb, nice guy?" He gave an awkward smile. "Bit of an improvement from toothless maggot. You Nohrians really have a way with words. You don't have to like my style of freedom. It's my style. You have your own and you can get your own. We all have our own version of freedom."
Ethan corrected his black jacket and brushed his vibrant strands aside. "The wyverns.. In a tower. My plan was to just walk right out of the gate. Who was going to question me? I'm a part of the guard, but well seems that didn't really work out the way I thought it was." The deserter sighed. "Alright. Following along the wall, I'm guessing there will be a passage that we can take? maybe they're kept someplace high so that they could just take off? But hey, if you're serious about escaping, you probably shouldn't leave me to guess about a location I've never been to."

"Ha, who needs freedom when they offer lots of great stuff here. You just haven't tried hard enough. Anyway, um, I guess I can take you there since you put it that way, but I doubt-" Northella said however in mid sentence she heard the sounds of rustling armor and quickly grabbed Ethan's hand.
She then start into a mad dash and dragged him along deeper into the alley so that whoever was coming did not see them. Sadly, thanks to her armor they could still hear her and were coming their way. She looked to Ethan and whispered "Hey, it's not much to go on but head straight down the alley we're in, climb up the stairs at the end and walk along the wall past two sections of parapets. When you get to that point make a right, head back down the stairs you find there and go through the door. You'll be in a training courtyard for the wyverns when you get there. From there, you'll see a tower about two hundred yards away go straight for it and if anyone gets in your way I'm pretty sure you know what to do."
After doing so she'd let go of his hand and allow him to run past him, however, she'd stand between him and the coming guards and quickly arm herself with her spear in preparation for their possible attack. When she leveled the blade so it pointed towards coming bandits Northella noticed the end of her spear was curved. It was a captured naginata piece.
"Oh shoot! I have the wrong weapon!" she shouted inevitably drawing attention to herself.
