"But-but it's important!" Northella stated stoping in front of one of the wyvern cages even as he commented on the wyvern's biting him in half and tried to sway her away from speaking about her past as well as his own. "These wyverns and my past are extremely important!"
She knew they were her only ticket out of here but she couldn't stand for him to brush off her life with such ease. Her whole body shook as she said, "The wyverns we want are at the top, but someone needs to go and make it so that our escape here isn't-isn't an escape. You understand? For you to leave I have to stay behind and get in trouble. And so, please... please... understad a little more why I hate Hoshidans. If you don't you'll end up only joining them and fueling this stupid war more."
She clear her threat then uttered, "My mother Estelle, the woman I spoke of, isn't my father Captain Sutherland's first wife. She's his second even though she's not-not my real mother. I loved her a lot, and as a result, wanted to help and protect her since she was very young but she made a stupid, huge mistake, took a mission in her early pregnant state, and flew off to the Hoshidan border to kill a few soldiers encroaching over the border and demand why they were moving into Nohr. I-I never saw her again but my little sister would have been born at the end of this year had she lived. So... you can't ever join those self righteous liars. Ever..."
"Look at me." Ethan whispered with his arms spread. "I'm trembling, covered in someone's blood. I'm not cut out for this, for killing someone. I'm no soldier. Tonight made that clearer than ever. I'm sorry about your loss. I know that probably doesn't mean anything, but I am. No one deserves that. I once thought I had lost my sister. I know it's not the same as a parent and unborn sibling, not even close. I can't pretend to understand, but." Ethan stopped himself. "I don't mean to make this about me. I'm sorry. But I give you my word, if that means anything, that I'm not joining them. I won't leave one army for another. This war happens without me."
His hand found hers. "And it can happen without you. You don't have to stay here. You don't have to get in trouble. We can get out of here. Go to another city, another country. Be anyone we want. We can leave this war behind, let someone else fight it. It doesn't have to be us. Come on." He urged her away. "They're waiting for us."
His voice danced between dreamy and desperate. Ethan knew what would happen to this woman if she stayed behind. He wasn't worth that trouble, not for a stranger. A stranger. That's what she was.

Northella listened to his words and allowed him to touch her hand just this once. It was a tiny bit comforting but then she stepped back and uttered, "I've made up my mind. Someone has to stay behind to make this convincing, besides, my father has enough of a position that the only thing I'll get in trouble for his letting wyverns loose. Even if they know the truth. They shouldn't follow you either since if I think you're a loser not worth anyone's time they certainly will too."
Nothella then smiled and added, "I guess I'll put that date I asked you of on hold. There's no telling if after I decide to leave here later whether or not I'll find you or another man that I like. My first mother but my poor, second mother Estelle and my sister Westlyn never did, which is probably a good thing for the time I knew them."
She giggled weakly then walked to the nearest cell for the wyverns and busted the lock by poking a bit of her lance through the latch hole. Then she pulled harshly causing it to release the latch. The first wyvern inside a simple brown scaled one let out a slow, rumbling roar and with that she moved onto a blue, her black one pumpkin and white one releasing each and allowing all of them to step out of their cages. None fortunately attacked them, at least while Northella was there, for they knew her and also her second mother's scent. In fact they let Northella try to get on them by bending their necks down, however, Northella beckoned Ethan over and ordered, "Since you can't ride without both hands and command them properly just pick one and hold on tight for your travels. Let them fly the coop and when you think you're near the ground during your journey drop from their backs. Once in flight they won't stop for a few hours so you won't be able to do anything else but hold on. I don't need to say you shouldn't let but... 'You really shouldn't let go,' they may consider eating you once you're alone and not flying atop them."
Northella knew this information from training with Estelle in the past as well as her first mother Cardina, however, it hadn't come easy. The reason being the wyverns were so powerful they ended up carrying her for hours on their backs or throwing her off allowing for no control of her situation. If she wasn't here and knew them less Ethan might be in trouble but he was very fortunate today. She was nowhere near as good as some of the royal family's guards or members of the family itself when it came to flying these beasts, but what little she knew about the roughness of wyverns showed. The only real way to tame one was to continually stay with them like a thorn until they gave up and let you properly ride them, however, Ethan wasn't going to be able to get more then a crash course. To make sure this didn't happen she pet each one of the wyverns on the back of the neck and let them clearly view herself and their newest rider.
"Yeah." Ethan said with a weak nod, lips pushing to the right. "Glad to see everyone has such confidence in me. But if you want to stay, I'm not going to try and convince you. It's not place to decide your life, not Nohr's place either.Just don't throw your life away. You're mother would want that."
Ethan hesitated against the wyvern's size. Though he had seen them before, up close they looked almost alien. Their shape was far from human, more reptilian. He listened to Northella's words as he stepped around the beast. Ginger hands felt along the wyvern and it snorted in response. The deserter recoiled.
"So I'll have no control? Oh well, not like I've ever had control over anything anyways." He placed a firm grip on the creature and pulled himself onto it. "Just hold on." He whispered.
The wyvern's scales weren't wet or slimy, as he expected. There was small comfort in that. His stomach was eating itself. His heart was racing. This was hi first flight and he had no idea what he was doing. Ethan found false confidence in the life beyond the wall. A life without bloodshed. The final thing to do, was damn a stranger. "'You really shouldn't let go,' they may consider eating you once you're alone and not flying atop them."

"Hmph, I already know all that," Northella answered gruffly. "I'm an adult woman and I'm making my own choices not any of them."
She'd then back off from the mercenary and allow him to mount the wyvern after warning him of it. By the time he was in the air she simply waved at him and uttered just loud enough for him to hear, "If I make it out of this silly escapade without a hitch, really, let's meet up again and at least spar. You've interested me enough in that."
She'd then turn after speaking this to him and shout, "Help! The wyverns broke lose from their cages!" Hopefully it'd be enough to distract guards patrolling and allow one of the beasts to carry Ethan off much further without being seen in the night sky. She'd get in trouble for what she did but if he escaped it was worth it.
