Koume tried not to make trips to Cyrkensia often. The place was a popular destination for the rich from both fighting parties. Always distracted by a beautiful voice or a beautiful dancer, their pockets were generally easy to pick through. If Koume was here, it was because she was short on funds and nothing else. Her bag was filled with different herbs and wrappings that Aki's shine maidens had so lovingly packed for her. She could've easily just found some hopeless case and worked her healing on them for everything they had but the thought of wasting her precious time, those precious items, on someone she didn't care for wasn't something she was eager to do. Besides, if the person had enough to pay Koume for her services then they sure as heck could afford a real healer.
Koume's hesitance to coming to the busy port city was on every other street corner, was what the city was known best for. The singers and dancers captivated the attention of not only the pockets she was trying to pick, but herself as well.
The way they moved. The way their sweet voices carried. It held Koume in place like a stupid little kid who was witnessing their first performance. She could sit their for hours if allowed, drinking in their talent like someone who would never see them again. Not only was she wasting time by being there, but it always put her even more at risk of getting caught between jobs. The number of times she completely stopped picking through a purse to watch a performer was... embarrassing to say the least. Even more embarrassing because it was happening at this very moment.
The dancer was beautiful. Graceful, enchanting, and it was hard for Koume to pull her eyes away from them. They had reminded her of a dancer she had seen in her youth. Dark hair, strange eyes, fluid dancing. The wave of nostalgia was overwhelming and enough to make her realize that the performance had ended just then, the clapping around her quickly forcing her back into reality. Her hand quickly grabbed what they could from the pocket and tucked them safely into her own bag.
Naru had arrived in Cyrkensia not too long ago, continuing his journey across the world in search of people in need. He'd been in Macrath not too long ago, and had heard tale in a tavern of a city near the southern border of the country, a neutral ground where performers of all kinds took the stage for the entertainment of the crowd. He was intrigued, needless to say, and now he'd finally arrived in his destination.
After leaving his horse at a rental stable, he strolled through the city streets, taking note of his unique surroundings. People of all backgrounds walked alongside him, going about their business in the city. Nohrians, Hoshidans, and even some he didn't recognize... They were all here and living in peace... This was the world Naru had always dreamed of. The war would never allow for this elsewhere, though. He sighed at the thought and silently prayed that one day, everyone could live in peace as they did here.
As Naru continued his search for lodging, one of the street performers caught his eye. A dancer gracefully flowed about her routine as the crowd watched, starstruck. Before long, Naru simply became another face in the crowd, entranced by the dancer's beauty. Before long, the performance was over, and Naru smiled. That was quite enjoyable... He would have to keep an eye out for more dancers as skilled as this one. As he turned to leave, however, he bumped directly into a young girl.
"Ack!" he exclaimed, catching her before she could fall. "S-sorry about that!" He took a closer look at the girl, and was immediately stunned by her appearance. Her ears were pointed, sticking out through her ruffled brown hair, and were covered in dark brown fur. Behind her, a large tail rose, covered in the same sort of fur as her ear. Naru was confused to say the least, for he'd never seen a Wolfskin, and didn't even know of them. "W-what are you?" He asked in confusion.

Koume's face turned a vivid shade of red, first from embarrassment then from anger. She roughly shoved the young man who caught her and released a sharp yelp as she landed on her tail. She quickly pulled her hood back up, tucking her ears flat against her head, before any curious eyes could catch onto her wolfish features. Some of the stolen goods tumbled out of her bag from the hard landing but she didn't bother picking them up. They were out in the open again. Picking them up and returning them into her bag would be trouble if someone saw her, and Koume wasn't willing to take that risk. Fury brightened her red eyes and caused her hair to fluff up.
"Watch where you're going next time, ya big oaf! People exist down here ya know, so get ya head out of the clouds and start usin' yer eyes. You were born with them for a reason." Koume hissed out as she picked herself up. She moved her tail experimentally and winced slightly. Sore, but nothing broken. Her hands moved to the top of her head, securing the hood, then to the rest of her cloak, double checking her tail was safely hidden before she turned her attention back to the man. In order to meet his eye, she had to tilt her head up slightly. This caused her to frown. Great, another giant meathead to deal with.
"What do ya think I am, idiot?" The girl's eyes darted around. There was an eye or two that watched them for a moment, but no one seemed to be paying any particular attention. Her body began to relax while her face remained scrunched. "Keep ya voice down. I don't wanna get tracked down again. Ya know how hard it is to shake off those stupid poachers? I haven't even made enough for dinner yet so if you wanna keep ya guts in place, I would suggest ya check yer trap before ya open it again."
Naru was stunned by the girl's reaction, to say the least. Well... Yes, he had caused her to fall in the first place, but he'd attempted to catch her. He could've just let her fall, but he didn't. Still... He was quite confused about her species. She'd mentioned poachers... But what sort of men would hunt a girl such as young and innocent-looking as her? And to what end? Perhaps her wolf-like tail? He supposed it could sell for a decent amount, but wouldn't a full wolf's pelt sell for more anyways?
"I-i really am sorry..." Naru said quietly, hoping to calm her down. "It w-was an accident. You mentioned poachers? I'm s-sorry, I'm not exactly from around here..." He gestured to his hair. "I'm from the Ice Tribe. I'm n-not very well educated on the rest of the world, to be completely honest..." It was then that Naru was struck with a brilliant idea. She'd mentioned that she was trying to save money for dinner, no? So why not offer to buy it for her? He was still completely oblivious to the fact that the goods on the ground had been stolen, so he attempted to pick them back up for her. But as he did..."
"Hey, that's my coin-purse, thief!" A man in the crowd, cried out, rushing over to him after catching a glimpse of his stolen goods. Naru's eyes widened in fear, but before he had a chance to explain, a group of the city guardsmen had pinned him to the ground. He looked up at Koume in horrified confusion, his eyes pleading for her help."

Koume watched as the guardsmen tackled and pinned the young man to the ground. She met his pleading eyes with indifferent red ones as the pros and cons weighed in her head. Why should she stick her neck out for an idiot like him? It was his fault for picking up the goods in the first place. Her eyes moved to the remaining treasures on the floor before going back to the now growing group of people around them. She heaved a high sigh and rolled her eyes before softening them, her lips forming a sickly sweet pout as she stepped forward.
"Stop! He didn't try to steal your coin purse. He was only trying to return it, you see." Koume moved to pick up the fallen items with one hand while her other hand snuck into the loose pockets of the people she past. "He saw a thief in the crowd taking advantage of you all while you watched the pretty dancer and he stood up to that bully for you! All he wanted to do was return all these goods to their rightful owners."
She plucked the coin purse from the ground and handed it to it's owner, her eyes wide and glistening with forming tears before she turned to the guardsmen to hand over the remaining stolen goods. "Please let my friend go. This is his first time out of the Ice Tribe and I don't want his first memories outside of his tribe to be something so terrible."
The guards exchanged looks before awkwardly releasing the young man and extending their hands to take the stolen jewelry and other treasures. She smiled brightly as she thanked the guards then, who had each patted the top of her head with a soft sort of smile. The young man's hand was taken in her own and she led him around the corner. Once they were out of sight, Koume dropped her hand like it had burned her. "Guards and their stupid heavy hands." There was movement underneath her hood, her ears poking out just barely before tucking themselves back against her head. She wiped her eyes and brought her hidden hand back forward again. Precious stones and smaller pieces of jewelry rested against the palm of her hand. "What morons, falling for an old trick like that."
"You, Ice Triber. You owe me big time for getting you outta that mess."
Naru breathed a sigh of relief as the guards released him, his look of pleading turning to one of immense gratitude. If he wasn't already enamored with this wolf-girl, he was sure to be now. But it was then that he realized what Koume had been doing... She was the thief who had stolen that man's coin-purse! The gems in her hands testified that she'd been stealing much more than that, as well... To put it plainly, he was horrified! How could a girl so innocent and pure-looking be driven to steal from those above her! There had to be another solution... One that didn't end up putting one person in a rut while the other tried to crawl out.
"You know..." Naru began cautiously, his voice low. "I could go and report you right now. I wouldn't have been in danger at all if you hadn't been stealing other's stuff. But... I'm not that kinda person. Plus, you did get me out of that mess, so I do owe you. Perhaps for a start I could buy you dinner? And you can tell me what those ears are all about. And why you have to result to such... Low acts. It's unbecoming of someone as beautiful as you. I'll even give you some money so you won't have to steal for a while. Do we have a deal?"
I will always help those in need, be they human, beast-kin, or elf!
Koume stopped her inspection of the treasures in her hand to slowly look up at the man. Her red eyes hardened into a glare, her smirk was dangerously sharp. The valuables were deposited into her bag, freeing both her hands. Her fingers twitched and her tail swayed carefully from side to side.
"Is that a threat, boy? You're either stupidly brave or just pain stupid. You have height but don't forget, worm, I have no problems with force feeding you your own liver." Koume eyes lingered over the spot where said organ was likely to be. While she had only ever opened an animal before, it was through unfortunate circumstances that her knowledge of human organ placement came to be. She picked her eyes back up again, a mocking version of her saccharine persona now leaking through. "Oh, how generous you are. How thankful I am."
She was close to telling him to just shove his offer where the sun didn't shine, but then her stomach growled and reminded her of the growing pain the hunger brought. The goods would bring in a good deal of money, that was a given, but if she didn't need to spend her money then what harm could it do to at least entertain the offer.
"All this sounds too good, Ice Triber. What's your price? And don't give me any of that "Out of the goodness of my heart" crap. You want more than answers about my race, don't you? You want half my earnings from this picking, don't you?" Koume tightly gripped her bag and took a step back, her eyes narrowing. Despite the skeptical look she gave, soft pink began to bloom in her cheeks. Compliments weren't given to her often and, whether they came from man, woman, or monster, she hated how sensitive she had become to them because of it. How pathetic. "Beautiful? Are you blind along with stupid? Call me that again and I'll make you truly unable to see."
Naru was warmed a bit by the girl's reaction. Even though her words were harsh, he could see a softer persona behind her facade. He could tell that she appreciated the compliment, and he had meant it from the bottom of his heart, but he had no doubt she'd make good on her threat if he did, so he supposed it'd be better to wait a bit to compliment her again.
"Really, I don't want anything but to know more about you and your kind," Naru stated, crossing a finger over his heart. "See... Like I said earlier, I was fairly sheltered in the village... I'm also a bit of an intellectual... I love to learn new things. And I'm a healer, so it's in my nature to want to help people." Naru stated, gesturing to the staff he carried on his back. "I know it may seem like a ruse... But I swear to you that if I'm lying, I'll let you kill me yourself." Naru smiled at the girl with pure, corrupted, genuine innocence. He meant every word of what he'd said.
"So.. Where ya wanna go?" Naru questioned, scratching his neck shyly. "I'm sure there's gotta be some great places to eat in this town. I'll let you pick."
I will always help those in need, be they human, beast-kin, or elf!
The answer seemed genuine enough, if only a little cliche. There was something in that answer that brought forth a sense of nostalgia, however, that made her only want to close up further. The figure in her mind and the one before her were disgustingly similar. To let her be effected by someone so insignificant now was weak, and maybe it was because she wanted to prove her strength or simply because she was petty that she decided to accept the offer. Just second to a free meal, of course. Koume slowly began to release the bag from her iron grip. "So, you're basically a giant nerd? A huge pushover? Figures..."
There weren't many places Koume was familiar with within the city. Once her bag was full she usually left before anyone could notice their missing items. Besides, being the popular resort city it was, most of the places were always pushing the prices to just below overpriced. Then again, she reminded herself, it's not my money...
"I don't stay in this place long enough to eat, so I don't know many places." Koume moved to look at the shops behind the young man before turning to the ones behind her. Wherever she picked would have to be small, some place where their conversation wouldn't be picked up by a curious ear. The last thing she needed was her face to be picked up by any poachers. As much as she would love a reason to not come back to Cyrkensia, this was where she got her biggest scores. A small cafe caught her eye then. Or rather, her nose. The smell of freshly baked sweets tickled her nose through the other less delicious smells that lingered in the air. She smoldered her excitement to look at the young man and point in the direction of the cafe. "There. We can talk once we sit down, but I name the terms."
"I'm allowed to not answer and if you ask a stupid question I get to kick you under the table, so ask carefully." As Koume walked, her hands straightened out her hood and the rest of her cloak. A hand was placed over her bag to insure her stolen property didn't get stolen by someone else. "And if this does turn out to be some dumb scam or you really are lying to me, I'll have your vocal cords twitching in my hand before you can even apologize for crossing me."
Naru turned to see which vendor the wolf girl had chosen, and nearly laughed when he saw that it was a sweet store. It wasn't obvious that he was on the verge of laughter, thankfully, or she probably would've torn his throat out. He just found it funny that a girl who carried herself in such a menacing and downright predatory fashion looked and had the tastes of a little girl.
"Sounds reasonable enough to me," Naru stated happily, "You've got a sweet tooth I see. Me too." It was then that he came to the realization that he didn't even know the girl's name yet! As a matter of fact... He doesn't remember giving her his name! How rude of him! "I d-don't believe I've properly introduced myself!" He said with a shy chuckle, offering a hand for her to shake. "Naru Keltan, at your service! And... Yeah, I really am just a nerd." He smiled warmly, wanting to improve the weak and childlike impression he'd made earlier.

Koume eyed the hand. The inside of the store was warm and quiet, the latter being more surprising as the shops were usually packed with curious tourists. It was peaceful, and the line was short, and it was that combination that caused Koume to shake the hand cautiously.
"Koume. You don't need my last name." Her eyes lingered on the sweets behind the display case and had to stop herself from drooling. She caught herself quickly and frowned, though it resembled more of a pout, back at the young man, Naru. "I don't have a sweet tooth. Baked goods are just easier to store and the keep better than anything else, right next to dried meats."
At the counter, it took all of the wolfskin's willpower to keep her tail still. Her eyes widened and her sharp nails tapped rhythmically against the wood. The older woman didn't laugh, as much as she looked like she wanted to, and Koume was thankful that her back was to Naru. She didn't need some guy seeing her like this, even if he was paying for her meal. She composed herself quickly, the childish joy smothered away, and stepped to the side. "Your turn, Ice Triber."
Naru chuckled to himself at Koume's denial of the accusation of having a sweet tooth. He knew better than that, but didn't give it a way. "Fair enough." He said simply. As Koume stepped up to the counter to make her order, Naru took the opportunity to investigate his surroundings. He'd always been appreciative of natural beauty, but that didn't mean he was against the man-made kinds, either. His interests were simply... Well rounded. The decor of the cafe was quite nice, and put Naru's mind at ease.
After Koume had finished, Naru stepped up and realized he hadn't decided what he wanted to order! He'd been too distracted by the decor! He scolded himself mentally before making a rapid decision on whatever caught his eye first. He didn't want to waste the woman's time; she had many other customers who still needed to be served. He paid for their food before turning back to Koume.
"So," he began. "Where would you like to sit? I personally don't have a preference. Though I assume you'd want something out of the way."
I will always help those in need, be they human, beast-kin, or elf!
"Maybe you do have a brain in there after all." Koume's eyes were already running along the sides of the cafe. The tables away from the entrance were empty, though the girl didn't consider herself surprised; the windows were positioned close to the front door, and the light poured through the glass like liquid warmth. As much as she longed to bathe underneath that light like the other customers, Koume began walking to the farthest corner. There she stood and waited for Naru to follow. It was harder to see her tail move anxiously with her back to the wall.
"I hope you remember the rules because I'm not gonna say them again." While it seemed that Koume remained unfazed by the sweets before her, it was hard to ignore the twinkle in her eye. Her tail swished gently underneath her skirt, and her feet kicked back and forth in childish joy. With a considerably large bite taken out of her first pastry, the wolfskin asked with a full mouth, "So, what's your first question?"
Naru took a deep breath as Koume began to eat. He was happy that she was happy. It was kind of funny how she continually denied her sweet tooth, even though it was clear that she had one.
"So, what exactly are you?" Naru began quietly, trying to make sure nobody overheard them. "Like I said, I was very sheltered as I grew up. I've only ever been around humans... Which you clearly aren't, at least not completely. You mentioned some kind of poachers, earlier?"
I will always help those in need, be they human, beast-kin, or elf!
"We have that much in common at least." Koume mumbled before swallowing her bite. "I'm a Wolfskin. We can transform into these big, strong creatures with the help of a rock. Our fur is valuable so poachers like hunting us down, like it's some kind of sport. Like it's some kind of stupid game to them."
Her sharp nails dug themselves into the wood of her chair. It felt odd including herself within the Wolfskin group. Granted that's what she was, if only proven by her ability to transform and her wolfish features, but she hadn't been raised with them. Humans cared for her, and even then only a select few had actually cared for her. What right did she have including herself into a group she had no real knowledge about until her meeting with Leliana? A heavy pit formed in her stomach, and she stabbed at the slices of bright fruit on the sweet bread with her nail.
