Gamblers. Drinkers. Revelers. The night of Marcarth is one full of greedy swindlers and dangerous dealers. Windmire already has its share of banditry and brigand work beneath the city, but this city is worse off. Those here seek after their own riches in bets and rigged games, losing all and selling every belonging until they've eventually sold themselves to a nefarious plot.
Yet, the attraction of instant riches beckons, and fools from abroad dared risk their very souls to deal with the devil.
An inn stood within a narrow street, its insides warm from a fire within the hearth, but also humid from the heavy fog from outside. It would have been disagreeable atmospheric condition for any regular man to cope with, even so, an eager game of Blackjack was afoot. The cards were flipped over, and each participant's face spoke their reactions to the luck of the draw.
Bitter eyes shifted briefly to the unusual woman sitting on the far corner of the table. She was pale, almost like a corpse, wearing a purple dress of particular Windmire fashion. Adorning her head was raven black hair hiding her eyes like a cloak, and a single golden tuft hanging limp across her face. Her presence was unsettling to those at the table, but her coin was much too tempting to ignore.
With the game won, her long, spindly fingers slowly reached and pulled five pieces of gold toward herself, and much like an arachnid pulling its kill into its mouth.
"New deal," she uttered as she rejected three coins.
A gentle swallow sounded from the dealer, his hands shakily seized the rest of the cards, and he began shuffling anew.
When his eyes captured something rather appealing to him. Raijin's brows lifted with interest. For a moment their eyes scanned the bit of gold that had been laid down by the other players. This was nothing serious. A few bits of gold here or there. He watched while they played out their game. Just a game of luck and knowing when to play your opponents. It tempted the young thief so much that her fingers fiddled with the few gold coins within her pocket. Raijin wasn't a stranger to putting on an act. Heck, if anybody could bluff, it was him. He looked around for his companion, and seeing him absent for the moment, figured it wouldn't hurt.
Raijin slid over to the table. His hand brushed over the dealer's chair while he dropped three coins onto the table. "I'm in as well." Raijin flashed a smile while he took his seat. "Just a few games."
The dealer shot a glance toward the newcomer and nodded his head.
"It's your coin," he said with a smirk, "And three's a big bet, kid."
The other players on the table toward the middle began to eye the new arrival's bet. Naturally, the covetous desire began to set in, and they chipped for one, one, and two coins each. As for the reticent woman at the very end of the table, her head had turned to look at the face of the newcomer, and while her eyes were hidden beneath the shadow of her hair, they held interest in the young man's appearance.
And so there was a new objective. It was child's play to shift the cards in one's favor, and the dealer here was none the wiser, especially after she had pulling a fast one in the last match.
Each of the three players in the middle drew their cards, and the woman did so last.
A big bet huh? That was a laugh to Raijin. Raijin was used to going big. Here he thought that was just to open. Three would be well worth the game. "I haven't even gotten started." Raijin examined her hand. Whatever the cards showed didn't change the sly look that was on his face. At 17, it was a bit lower than he would have liked off the bat. It was a hard number to call. Half the cards were still over a six. Still, he threw in a coin to increase the bet. Hesitation wasn't something he'd show.
The man to his left added a coin of his own. Nervously, he eyed the others. Raijin hadn't learned the competition yet. Was that a bluff? Or was he a nervous player? Living on the streets, Raijin learned never to trust anything.
The other was just as stone-faced as Raijin had remained.
Four coins, now... is this confidence? You should be.
What did you see, my friend?
... Got it. 16, 17, 16, 19. 19 is beside me, yes? Good. Top card on 19? Ah...
Listen to my command then...
The pale woman suddenly thumped two coins heavily onto the table. At a count of five coins, the dealer and other players bore a wary glance toward her. During this time, upon the deck of the larger player, a card was subtly removed and slid unnoticed to the victim between the cracks of the table.
The large man's hands began to sweat at the sudden confidence of the woman. Could it be that she has a higher number than he? Nineteen was next to being the best! Did she have a twenty? Twenty-one, even? Was she that lucky? It had to be a bluff!
Yet, the woman turned her head slowly, her thin lips forming a wry smile. He can already imagine her forming the words.
He caved in. Another card was procured from his deck. A jack of clubs.
The only choice for Raijin was to stay. The others at the table were slowly busting with thier high hands as they got just a little too greedy. Easy prey these men were. The woman on the other hand.. Raijins vixinllike grin never fell from his face. Just like him, the woman was smiling. He woudnt be surprised if it came down to the two of them. And that frightened him. He tossed two more coins on the table. "im staying right here." That was enough to make another back out. A !6 had folded ad the oters luck had made him bust. Raijin lifted his hand in an invitation. "well, men, show me what youve got."
