"Angela-san, make sure your fingers aren't inside the mortar when Jeremy-kun puts down the pommel to strike. You'll want to fold the rice in a half-second, with the other half second pulling away."
"So... it's sort of a trust game?"
"Fumu..."
Mai stood up out of her seat and folded her arms behind herself. She wore an ornate kimono with her hair tied up in a bun. Angela Jessop and Jeremy Freeman, her spoils of recent struggle, also wore Hoshidan wear to accommodate their incorporation with their new lifestyle.
"Mochi is not just a game, Angela-san," spoke Mai with her eyes set, "It is an long-practiced tradition that we Hoshidans are proud to perform every year during festivals."
"Oh," the ex-axe fighter spoke with a snap of his fingers, "I hear that there's a festival coming up. Is this what this is about?"
"Yes," Mai nodded, "I'm training you to be able to sell mochi during the festival."
"Festival..." Angela scowled and turned her head to the side, "... How is it that you Hoshidans..."
"Hmmm?" the innkeeper raised her eyebrow, "You Hoshidans...?"
The other woman's hands quickly shot up as she waved in the air, "Oh, no, no, no! I mean we. I just want to know how you guys manage to stay peaceful and... and all with what's going on..."
Mai squinted at the woman and let out a sigh, "We never forsake tradition, even in the face of coming trouble. Sword in one hand, mochi cake in the other. Now, are you ready to make mochi?"
After spending most of the day assisting her instructor with his practices Akemi was left quite exhausted. She couldn't wait to get back home and get some much earned rest. Deciding to not go back home empty handed she bought a bottle of milk from a dairy farmer that frequently set up his stand near the training grounds.
' I really don't feel like binge drinking today. ' Since she'd already gotten a healthy amount of Sake the other day Akemi decided to take sometime off the booze. Her injuries where already more or less healed so the painful sensation was long gone by now.
" Tadaima~ " Surprisingly enough Miss Watnabe was not at the entrance by the time Akemi made her arrival. Instead she was greeted by Sachiko- one of the waitress that often took Mai's place when she wasn't around.
" Okaeri, Akemi-kun. Guess who's preparing Mochi in the rear yard?" The sassy waitress was a long time acquaintance of the two so there was no harm in letting the sweaty Oni, still wearing her dirty uniform know about this, of course she also left out the detail Mai wasn't by herself.
" Is that so? She might need a hand. " With her milk bottle in hand Akemi made her way outside, taking the door that lead to the courtyard only to find the inn keeper explaining her ' prisoners' what Mochi was all about.
The scene caused Akemi to start cackling in a rather cynically mocking tone. During her captivity she'd been tortured and abused both physically and mentally. Meanwhile miss Watanabe was teaching these two the art of making rice patties. The absurdity of it all was simply too much to bear so she could only express herself with that disturbing laughter.

The laughter of the oni fighter caused Angela's head to whip upward. "Tch...!" the woman's hand gripped tightly, "What are you laughing about? Can't you see we're trying to acclimate?"
"Yeah!" exclaimed Jeremy with the mochi pounder against his shoulder, "It's hard work trying to memorize all these traditions."
Mai watched the exchange with a raised eyebrow. She has known Akemi to be headstrong, but would that interfere with her philosophy here? The innkeeper took a few steps forward with her arms hidden in her sleeves, "Fufun. Wonderful timing, Kihara-san. I would like it if you could help me demonstrate the process of mochi pounding." She lifted her hand toward Jeremy, "Jeremy-kun, would you mind handing the pommel to Kihara-san?"
The former axeman looked at the hammer in his hand and nodded his head, "Uh, sure..." He held the tool cautiously out toward the oni fighter. Akemi

This hearty laugh eventually ceased as Akemi attempted to regain her breath. Even her eyes had teared up a little and the girl was still squirming from the tickling sensation in her stomach.
These Nohrians where clearly unerved as they tried to explain themselves. " You people should be grateful Mai decided to take care of yourselves." If it had been her, Akemi would have handed them over to the Hoshidan army in a heartbeat. Neverthless she never questioned Mai's decisions when it came to administering the inn, after all she was a simple tenant.
" Absolutely." When the inn keeper approached her she knew it was time to provide some assistance. " I was able to take a good flogging so you two shouldnt have much trouble learning the tropes." When the time came to give them a demonstration Akemi made use of an aggressive tecnique that made it seem like she was killing the flour mixture.

"Hmph..." Angela's gaze became cold, "Don't test me."
"Hey, lighten up," Jeremy patted the woman's back, causing her to flinch, "We're lucky our new boss is so merciful."
"Fufun," Mai simpered and folded her arms, "I'm nice like that, you know? Now, onto the demonstration..." The innkeeper proceeded forth and pulled a large covered pot aside the mortar. She removed the lid, then scooped a liberal amount of rice inside of the mortar. "Kihara-san will pound the rice so that it becomes mashed up." She nodded to the girl, who then began to break down the rice with aggressive, bloodthirsty strikes. All the while, Mai also splashed water onto the rice to keep it from sticking to them.
"Ho," Jeremy grinned, "I think I can do this."
"So what did you need me for earlier?" asked Angela with a tilt of her head, "You're just going to add water."
"Observe, Angela-san," the innkeeper smirked, "It takes an extra step to make the end product as we would desire it." She stood up then splashed her hands with water, causing the two spectators to raise their brows. Then, along with Akemi's ferocious beating, Mai suddenly reached into the mortar, folded the dough over, and withdrew whilst shouting in beat to the girl's strikes. She did this many more times as the mochi slowly became plumper and more elastic. When the beatings ended, the sticky rice was a large, round mass of goodness.
At this point, the innkeeper folded and heaved it out of the mortar onto a starch-covered vessel, while the two ex-Nohrians stared on in shock and amazement.
"... Y-you can't be serious..." Angela stuttered, "There's no way in hell that I'm sticking my hand in there while there's a hammer pounding away!"
"Fufun, well, I know I've had a few of those happen before with Kihara-san," replied the innkeeper with her hand to her chin, "... A lot actually, but that's before I taught her how to gauge her strikes." She nodded her head to the girl, "She's good at it now, of course." Akemi

Even though Akemi was ok with Mai taking these two under her wing she couldn't help but distrust them on a fundamental level. There was no telling when if it at all they would try something funny so in the meantime all she could do was keep an eye out and believe in Mai. She didn't think for a second her long time friend was incapable of changing their minds but people where stubborn.
" You see this is what perfection looks like. yours will be far from perfect but practice makes the expert. " There was no denying it had taken Akemi and Mai quite sometime to refine their Mochi making technique. For obvious reason she wasn't anywhere near as aggressive as she'd been today, that was simply Akemi trying to vent off her stress on the completely innocent rice flour and water mixture.
From the looks of it that Jeremy fellow was adapting rather quickly, then again it might have something to do with the fact he was all alone with three fairly attractive women. Angela was playing hard to get and in a way Akemi couldn't fault her for being distrustful because it certainly was a mutual feeling.
Deep down she wondered if these two would have a different mind set if they where being tortured for information or just for the hell of it like how it had happened to the Oni. " If you try hard enough I will reward you two with a cup of milk. " Earlier before coming here she'd picked a pair of cups which had been set aside along with the milk bottle she'd brought.
" This is for you, Watanabe-san. " Now it was the perfect time to have a refreshment to regain their energies after vigorously pounding that rice patty until it was completely elastic. She offered Mai a drink in the shape of some tea she'd gotten from the kitchen earlier.
