Drowsy roads left the last four miles a fever dream and the longer Ethan Leigh thought about it, the less sense the night made. What was Serena doing outside of the tribe? The distance between their childhood home and Hoshido just didn't make sense. He couldn't even believe the journey himself, but he had made it. Maybe he hadn't and this was just one long story he was telling. It didn't matter. The night had been long and Ethan was in no mood to think.
He plodded along with his tired and injured comrades resting atop his confiscated wyvern. Part of him resented their slumber. He was endlessly tortured and humiliated. Why did they get to rest? Maybe that's why he left them to the wyvern. He had no idea how those things worked, what they ate, or even how to fly it. If something was going to happen, it would happen to others. He already paid his price.
Rising steps broke his thoughts. They flowed up a jagged hill, ending with a building too large for one person. Distant lights seemed inviting enough.
“Stay here.” Ethan said to the wyvern. “Keep them safe. I'm going to see if there's help up there.”
The creature crocked its head.
“You probably don't understand me, do you?” Ethan's question earned no response and he turned for the stairs.
Each conquered step won fleeting energy from the wanderer. Most parts of his tired body wanted to give in. The night's fight had been enough. If someone was really up there, they'd find him in the morning. Mai's injured shouldn't kill her, but he shouldn't have been here in the first place. He waded through thoughts and stone until he found the shrine's door and beat weak hands against it.

More than a day filled with field training, frontal combat or even siege, Sakaba found this particular instance of a day more taxing than any of the aforementioned. He had done a great injustice to his family by running away and joining the military, and that did not pass well with his father. The pride-ridden instructor of Hoshido meant little in the eyes of the Ouyuu Shrine Priest, not so much in the eyes of the rest of the family however. It is in extremely rare cases like these, where the father was away, in which the eldest son dared show his face around the shrine.
Though that is well understood. Everyone had some problems with their family, right?
His room was exactly as he remembered it. Messy with scrolls and clothes, but not dirtied. Reeks of old futon. Funnily, he found this to be pleasant. It was where he grew up and spent most of his days. Though what interrupted his sleep, happened to be the unexpected knocking sounds against the wooden door.
Comfortable as he felt in his bedding, that was enough to snap him awake. Devoid of sound, his tabi socks slid across the polished floor of his home as he walked to the entrance, still in his yukata, navigating through the familiar corridor with help from dim candle light. Through a window, Sakaba could see some light. The moon wasn't full tonight, but it wasn't long after it last was. The skies were lit about enough, and he had decided to place his bets on that to help him.
Through the very corner of the window, he could see him. A young man, seemingly battered. But unfamiliar. Slowly reaching for the door soon after, keeping but a pole in a free hand for the worst case, Sakaba opened to meet the unexpected guest; not yet revealing his readiness with the improvised weapon. "Hello." He greeted, eyes barely open. Not even considering hiding how he was woken up. "Are you lost? What might you be looking for, this late at night?"
There were several fairy tales that started this way. None of which included a male youth, however. Ethan
Conniving shadows played trips on Ethan's weary mind. The door seemed to open on its own, but it was imagination alone that beckoned him. Time passed, value unknown and the wanderer fell back against the shrine's sleeping walls. There was comfort in its cold stone. It seemed to usher him down, promise that the morning would be better. Somehow, he wanted to believe its nonexistent lies. Help lay elsewhere.
Creaking wood asked for attention, but the fading wanderer ignored it until he heard a man's voice. Distant, gray eyes turned up to his intruder.
“Lost?” Ethan parroted. “No. Buddy, I don't even know where I'm going.”
A brief breeze roused his mind, rousing his body's resting aches. “We could use some help. I'm pretty beat up. And my friends down there,” He pointed down endless steps. “They aren't doing any better. She might die. I can't let that happen, not for me. You hear me? She can't die for me.”
Part of him expected no answer. The man before him, if truly a man, could be nothing more than another fatigue induced specter. It didn't matter. Materialized guilt made fine enough company.

This late an hour, Sakaba had to do his absolute best in restraining an incoming hearty yawn; preventing it, as he listened to the stranger's plead. Somehow. As he stood there, clenching at an improvised stick, any could tell he didn't trust this man. He was ready to retaliate if needed, taking alert from solely his appearance at this absurd time. Fact that he seemed wounded didn't help; it might have been some ruffian, for all he knew.
However, he still took the other's words with proper value. As he was a man of belief, the firstborn of a shrine. This, was a given. Luckily for the stranger, this was no illusion. "..." Despite that, he couldn't help but take a short break to fully comprehend what was asked of him. Part of him was quick to judge and throw an odd question in his mind. What was this young man on about? Was the injuries he took so taxing that he lost sense?
"Wait here." He briefly commanded, closing the door at the young man's face. As he scoured the house for anything he could use to tend to the beg thrown at him, Sakaba finally made it to properly yawn out, making sure he had everything in store before once more opening his door to the injured man.
"Very well. Show me the way." He didn't even need a reason. This was his job, as a shrine's monk. ...If he was one, anyway. Ethan
The door closed, if it had even been open. The early morning's brisk breeze was enough to keep Ethan awake. The stranger said little. Just as well, the less people knew the better. Better for who? He wasn't really sure, but that part would come later. And later was now since the door opened.
"Very well. Show me the way."
Ethan nodded. The fatigued wanderer used stone walls to help him up. Aching feet carried him back down countless steps. A dry tongue offered no complaints, but Ethan felt the need to explain as they drew closer and his stolen wyvern came into view.
"The man's just asleep." He said. "Smart guy didn't get hit, but Mai. She's not doing too well. Blade to the side, she lost a lot of blood. I'm not a medic. Aside from bandages, I couldn't do a damn thing for her."
The wyvern's bound snout drew close to the stranger. Ethan reached a hand out and shoved the beast away. "Leave him alone."
