A wispy ram emerged from the woman's seals. He bounced around the room leaving small traces of electricity where his hooves had touched. With a bleat, it settled in front of the woman. The sheep could sense no traces of evil within the inn. None besides the young woman who was currently trying to sneak up on him.
Shizuka watched the sheep bounce around the room with wide eyes. She actually did some magic! That was amazing. This woman was a real ghost hunter. The moment he stopped in front of Mai, she took a few tip toes towards the creature. It was amazing! A sheep made of light. Her hand was outstretched. The sheep hadn't noticed her! Shizuka didn't realize the rude awakening she was going to have. The girl went to stroke the sheep and found electricity coursing through her body. “Ayieeee!” She shouted. Shizuka couldn't bring herself to move from the animal.
The girl fell on the floor with her body convulsing. She tried to shake away the feeling of the thunder attack. Finally it faded away. The girl just lay on the floor. The sheep hovering above her in front of Mai. “Whoooa,” her head was spinning. “That was crazy.”

So it seemed that all was normal in this establishment. Either the evil spirit moved on, or it was just an accident that had happened. Regardless, it appeared that Mai could actually build an inn from the ground up!
Mai's thoughts were overshadowed by the fact that Shizuka attempted to touch the sheep. The fool! Didn't she know that these kinds of spirits were aggressive by nature?
"Shizuka-san!" Mai gasped as she rushed to her side, "You silly girl! Don't ever do that again!" She lifted the girl by her back as she sheathed her charm in her obi. "We certainly need to brush down your hair after that. You certainly look as if a spirit had attacked you." The residual energy caused strands of Shizuka's hair to lift in the air. Shizuka Yui

"Orooo." The girl had little she could say then. She could feel the woman's hands reach down to help her but Shizuka instinctively shook her off. The girl rolled over onto her stomach and started to climb onto her hands and knees. That was when she saw it. It looked out of place. Shizuka's hands slipped under the wire that lead across her path. Her and Mai were standing within the doorway. Her eyes trailed the length of the wire until it disappeared into the walls. The wheels turned in Shizuka's head. The exploded floor. The wire. This explosion wasn't caused by spirits. "Its a trip wire!"

That was a funny little maneuver she did. Mai scratched the top of her head as Shizuka began to move around. She was following something.
"Shizuka-san?" she inquired with a confused expression, "What's..." Then, the realization set in.
A trip-wire? Wasn't that a trigger for a bomb? That explains why the whole place was blown apart by appearance.
... But was there just one of these? What if there was another from before that hadn't been set off?
"Yikes," Mai shuddered and hid around the corner of the doorway, "I think we should inform the authorities of this discovery..." she raised her eyebrows in realization and tapped her fist into her palm, "Oh! You're a soldier. I forgot about that. It's possible that this place was victim to a deliberate attack."

"The authorities, right!" Shizuka was ready to run out of the house and get help until Mai's words resonated within her. That's right! She puffed out her chest with a sense of pride. She was a soldier! "You think it was?" she asked out loud. She bent down to inspect the broken trip wire. Her hand on her chin she pondered it. That's what people did that were professionals or something.
She didn't get it.
"I don't understand though. Why would people blow up an inn? That could have hurt a lot of people inside of it." She gasped with a bit of realization. "Do you think all of these were connected somehow? Why would somebody want to target any new inn?"

No, no, worse than just hurt a lot of people inside. People may have died in here. Something told Mai that Shizuka shouldn't be the one on the job...
Eh, whatever.
"Well," said Mai with a gentle shrug of her shoulders, "I could name a few scenarios, but they're all conjecture since we don't have very much to go off of." She pointed at the hole, "I would imagine that this was the kitchen. This isn't a poor town, so I would imagine that there would at least be a cook or assistant helping the innkeeper. Moreover, a trip wire is a sophisticated trap involving explosives. The perpetrator wasn't novice in terms of his ability to craft those kinds of things." She followed the trail of the trip wire with her eyes.
"It goes through the wall, hm?" the woman raised an eyebrow, "Let's see where the wire originated. Maybe that would she some light on this situation." Shizuka Yui

The girl nodded. She rubbed her chin at the thought of everything this woman was saying. "Yes, yes of course. I was thinking just that." Shizuka hadn't been. "There was just one assistant with the cook. Truth be told, I don't think the food here was really that good. It's nothing like The Axe and Flute." And that was saying a lot. The Axe and Flute didn't have very good food to begin with.
"It's kind of scary to think that it happened. Like this was all set up by somebody. Its not like tripwires all just appear out of nowhere!" The girl gasped. Now that would be totally crazy. "Do you think the others were like this too? What if the same person was behind all the other inns going under." She gave a soft huh... and followed the train of the trip wire. It began twisted around a nail and flowed through the kitchen. Shizuka could see it against a wall and where the wall had been missing. And then it led under the home where the explosives once were.
"Ahh.." She was uneasy. "I don't think we should go down there. What if one hadn't gone off. I don't think we'll find out anything. Everything destroyed."

Mai wrapped her chin with her hand and gave a light smirk, "Hmm... yes, I think the wire is all we need to have someone conduct a full investigation of the premises." She turned her head to Shizuka and nodded her head, "If it's true that one of the explosives haven't gone off, then this area is still dangerous. We should report this to the proper authorities."
However, before she would leave, Mai pulled a small sketchbook from her obi and started to sketch the location of the wire with a piece of charcoal. If the perpetrator would discover that they were making an investigation, they would most likely try to eliminate any evidence that was left behind.
When she was finished, the woman placed her book back into her obi. "Let's get out of here, Shizuka. Where's the nearest guard post?" Shizuka Yui

Shizuka was pretty sure the building was safe. It's been a long time since this attack. The bomb or whatever had set off the explosion was probably ruined from rain or something. The building itself was blasted open and exposed to the elements. She was more worried about splinters than getting blown to pieces at this point. Shizuka stuck her thumb in her mouth and bit lightly on her fingernail. Maybe the authorities knew. Why would they cover all of this up though? Peering over Mai's shoulder, she examine the picture.
"Hey! You're an artist!" she said. She was more drawn to the picture than what had been going on. "That's a really good idea. You're super smart and you know magic and all of that stuff. Woooow." She met somebody really amazing today.
Shizuka took one last glance at the building before she waved Mai to follow her. She pointed up the street ahead of them. In this town, full of warriors in the making, there were but a few guard posts. Kitsuki was probably one of the safest places in Hoshido to be. All around you there were fighters of every kind. It was so amazing! That's probably why Shizuka liked it here so much. Yeah!
"Here it is!" They stood outside of a building. Men in armor were nearby shooting at straw targets in the yard with bows.

It went without saying that Shizuka was quite all over the place. It made Mai wonder how she even managed to become a soldier in the first place...
She digressed. It was important now that they reported to the proper authorities. Mai followed after her, and eventually stood before what appeared to be the barracks of the town. Two guards stood by with their eyes on the two women.
"Oh, it's Shizuka-san," said one of them to the other, "What brings you here?"
Mai glanced back to the girl, "Ah... maybe you should be the one to tell them, huh..."
Better off let Shizuka start them off, seeing as she has the authority here. Shizuka Yui

The girl proudly puffed up her chest in recgonizition from the other guards. Of course they would know her. She was one of them. Or perhaps, it was because she had lived there for her entire life. Either way, there came a sense of pride that Mai trusted her to handle the situation with these two men.
"Kagesaki," she addressed the guard that spoke. For a moment she had seemed formal. Her body erect and she stood tall like a normal soldier, but that quickly melted away. The situation had lost its seriousness as Shizuka reverted back to her goofy self. "Sooo," her words trailed on, "This magical lady and I went to one of the old inns because she wants to make an inn here and I told her that it wasn't a good idea because of all the trouble with the inns around here and how theres this curse on all of them and while we were that one inn that nearly exploded, you know the one with the big hole in the floor that looks to the storage space below, yeah we found this wire that led through the floor and there is no doubt that it was a trip wire. I don't think that the trouble with all these inns came from spooky spirits but like, I think it might actually be a set up from someone else. Isn't that kind of scary? There's someone in Kitsuki that is trying to destroy all the inns." The girl took a moment to tap her chin in thought. In her monologue she had moved her arms around and gestured actions to match her words. With a gasp she covered her mouth. "What if The Axe and Flute goes next!?"

The soldier's brow furrowed in the perplexity of her long explanation, "... So... you lost me."
Mai let out a quiet sigh, "What Shizuka-san is saying is that the last inn that was destroyed was deliberately booby-trapped via trip-wire."
"By the divine spirits!" the soldier exclaimed with a shudder, "Trip-wire? If what you're saying is true, then..." he put his hand on his chin, "... Not to throw accusations, but the only people group of who are capable of constructing such sophisticated devices are those ninja in Mokushu."
The woman's eyes widened, "... You're saying this might be the work of a hired ninja? A rogue group, maybe?"
"Well, as I said, it's all conjecture," Kagesaki shrugged, "... but this is important to take note of." He looked to Shizuka and nodded to her, "Shizuka-san, perhaps you should take your investigation further. Do you have physical proof of the trip wire? It may be important so to raise awareness of the guard." He tapped the side of his head, "But do so secretly, we needn't have the people fear an attack."
Shadowgift Units with Shadowgift may use dark magic.
"Ninja's really!?" That got the girl a bit excited. "I haven't seen any around here. Maybe that's because they're ninjas." The girl laughed at her own joke.
"Physical proof?" The girl questioned. What more proof did they need other than the exposed floor and the tripwire in the doorway? "I mean, there is a clear wire running acrossed the doorway in the inn. I found it myself! See this woman here is a spirit detective thing. She summoned a sheep and it got mad and it shocked me." Shizuka's train of thought drifted as she thought about the sheep. She hadn't seen what happened to it since then. Maybe it was angry and just ran away. She wondered if Mai was mad about that. She glanced over to Mai in her bit of silence as her mind was going wild and then blinked a few times while her thoughts resurfaced once again. "Oh! Oh! yeah, then I fell onto my butt and the wire was there. It went into the floorboards and led right to the hole in the ground. That's enough proof right?" It had to be. That was the only thing Shizuka and Mai had to go off of.
"It's just too big of a coincidence that all the inns are going out of business! Like, things like that don't just happen. I'm surprised we just now thought to look into it. It's like we're solving an age old crime." Though.. she hadn't been looking for that in the beginning. The pair just happened crossed some luck. She wasn't sure if she would have been more excited about the whole ghost thing.

"Er..." the soldier grimaced at the long-winded story, "... So your friend here is a diviner?"
"Īe, not exactly," Mai waved a hand before her face, "I'm no trained diviner, but I at least know how to summon the spirits in my days as a student in the capital."
"Oh, is that so," he nodded, "So, in short, Shizuka made the discovery after touching the spirit. So it was in plain view after all..."
"Don't miss her last point, though!" the woman wiggled her finger.
The soldier's head lifted, "Oh, the point? Was it that last bit about the inns going out of business? Right, that's what I thought." He placed a hand on his chin, "... Is there anything else you can tell me?"
"How about the fact that the Axe and Flute seems to be the only functioning inn that has remained untouched throughout this whole thing?" stated Mai, "Not to throw suspicion about, of course, but I find that a little strange."
His brow furrowed at her words, but he slowly nodded, "... Strange indeed... Shizuka-san." He turned to the rider, "At this point in your investigation, I'd like you to go to the Axe and Flute and ask if they know anything about the rash of inn blights without rousing suspicion." His body leaned in close with his hand by his cheek, "... Be careful though, I have a feeling that this would get a bit messy with suspicious folks." Shizuka Yui

"What! you don't think they're actually doing that?" The people at the Axe and Flute were good people, from what Shizuka knew about them. The girl put in part time work there often... occasionally. She never really got paid for it, but she just enjoyed the work sometimes. It kind of bothered her that they would assume that.
But what if? The frown on her face faded away. "What if we just talk to them?" It would be the prefect plan! Shizuka would get to play good cop, bad cop and interrogate the people she was working for earlier. "I can tell them all about how their inn is in danger and how people are attacking the other inns! I bet that would make them sweat."
