Having served as a mercenary before, Johann has many connections with the criminal underbelly of the kingdom. However, people like that can be hardly called his friends or even close acquaintances, since he seldom talks about himself - a trait he carried over to the army. If Johann has any friends, he barely talks about them.
Enemies:
Johann doesn't have any personal enemies, but on his line of duty, he clashes with brigands and people of Hoshido almost on a daily basis. Nonetheless, he has no hatred for the latter and considers the former a mere annoyance.
Relationships:
Between having to raise his sisters on his own and serving as a sellsword, Johann barely gave the thought of love any attention. A hopeless romantic on the inside, he often wishes to find someone like him - a peaceful person that likes simple things. Sometimes, he can be rather blunt with his words, though.
Lydia works as a nurse in Markarth, but she is usually out and about throughout the lands of Nohr trying to find new plants or recipes that could be used for medicines. With a staff in hand, she will heal anybody who needs whether they be a friend or foe. She tends to be on the more serious side and as an elven minority in Nohr had been the subject to quite a few hardships growing up. I think the two of them might be able to relate in some way, become friends, and maybe even more if the vibe leads to it. She has very few close connections to others outside of her howetown and the plantation she grew up in.
Lydia Chant Johann had to travel a lot across the kingdom since he used to be a mercenary, so it wouldn't be out of place for him to visit her hometown. Besides, his appreciation of a healer's work and active dislike of racial discrimination might play a role here. He had to face a lot of hardships as a child, so maybe they can bond initially over this?
It seems like it would be very easy for them to connect. Do you want them to have a more action packed adventure or should they meet in her the clinic, she can dress a wound of sorts if needed or tend for an illness, then it can just develop from there? Those are the more simple starts I have.
I would prefer something more peaceful. As for what I have in mind... How about Johann and his squad visit Lydia's hometown after a battle. Injured and tired, they decide to heal their wounds in the clinic. I picture Johann as the kind of a captain that would wait until after all of his underlings are taken care of, no matter what kind of gruesome damage he suffers himself. From there, they relationships could develop. Sounds alright?
