Ethan Leigh casually walked through the quiet marketplace. People sat behind stalls, offering good of varying use. Occasionally some interesting trinket caught his attention, however the stories behind them were often outrageous and weren't enough to pry gold from his purse. The wanderer sighed to himself. Slow days like these were a drag. Those he knew had things to do and Ethan was left to fill the day himself. There was nothing to fill it with though.
This small town, apparently named Hanlin, had no more than fifty or so people. There life seemed simple, too simple for him. Funny. This was the same type of village he came from. All it needed was a few layers of snow and it would be the closest he'd been to home since he left Nohr. He sighed again. Why did everything remind him of the Ice Tribe? So much was alien here, yet strangely familiar. Customs were similar when stripped away and these people were all plagued by the same man that plagued home: Garon.
Ethan approached a small table, glancing at some elder man's collection of supposedly rare coins. "How much for this one?" Ethan asked as he lifted the strangest looking one. "That? That there's a septim." The man said. "Not good here, but worth a good amount in some far off land. For you, ten gold."
Ethan set it down. "Thanks but I'll pass." Ethan strolled away. There wasn't going to be anything good here. His mind wandered again, dragging his body with it. As he thought about the cold winds and lovely mountains back home, he absentmindedly bumped into someone. "Oh man, I'm sorry." He said.

"Oh!" a large man replied as he bumped into a fellow a few inches smaller than himself, "Oh, no, good sir! I must apologize for not paying attention!" He glanced back to a mule with a large pack on its back, "I didn't see you, as I was also calling to my journey's companion!"
The donkey eventually made it to his side and let out a low bray, "Eeyore."
"Aha!" the knight patted the donkey's bristly mane and faced the stranger once more, "Good fellow, I saw you from afar and couldn't help but notice. Would you..." he looked around and leaned down toward him, "... perchance be a man of the Ice Tribe?" Ethan
"No need to apologize. These things just sort of happen." Ethan scratched at the back of his head. "No harm no foul right?"
By now he had gotten good at hiding his reactions, something Ethan definitely needed to practice. He fought against the urge to furrow his brow and stare dead eyes into the stranger's. Instead he shrugged. "No I wouldn't be. Though you're right in pegging me as nohrian. I come from windmire. Just a trader making use of the sudden demand for hoshidan goods. I tell you, the people back home are buying everything like once we're done there wont be any signs left of the place. You know, everyone wants a piece of history. Are you after that lost ice tribe man? I haven't heard much about him. The soldier's wouldn't give much information to me. I just know that they were stopping anyone that didn't look hoshidan."

Ahh... so he wasn't a man of the Ice Tribe. That was hard to believe given his pale skin and hair, but who was Deacon to judge? He'd rather believe until that was proven otherwise.
"Oh, no, not really," Deacon waved his hand in front of his face, "I just thought I'd tell him that the Ice Tribe is doing well under the circumstances. You see, I paid a visit to the Ice Tribe at one time to take care of a Faceless that was terrorizing the populace." He gave a casual salute to the man, "Well, I apologize for assuming, good sir! I shall be off, then." He turned to leave the man. Ethan
"Ah." He said nonchalantly. "Good for them." He shrugged. "You don't need to apologize for assumptions. I'd probably make the same one myself, but unimportant. But let me ask, are you military? It's just strange to see someone dress like you browsing a market. Maybe I'm making an assumption now, but what brings you here?"

Deacon changed direction back to the fellow at his question, "Oh? Ah. Well, I used to be." He scratched the back of his head and shrugged his shoulders, "I was dishonorably discharged... was it two or five years ago, now? I've no king or country I am strictly loyal to." He pointed at the armor that was present on the donkey's pack, "Right there, as you can see, it's old Nohrian armor with no medal of status."
The man raised his head with his hand stroking his jutting mustache, "... It's for the best, I suppose! Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to freely battle brigands to protect innocent lives, or perhaps make the occasional vulnerary delivery from one side of the continent to the other. Noddy work the latter, but I daresay that I wouldn't have my life any other way. Oh!" He held his hand out to the merchant, "Sir Deacon Brigham, at your service. I may be a dishonorably discharged knight, but I am a knight nonetheless." Ethan
"Huh." Ethan stared surprised. "Dishonorably discharged from the Nohrian military? I cant really say that it's a bad thing. Those people don't seem like the up and up. You seem like an honorable man though. If you don't mind me asking you, what did you do to get kicked out of the military? It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal? I mean taking vulenaries to people who need them doesn't sound like the kind of thing a good man would do?"

"Aha, thank you, good man... now, what did get me kicked from the military?" Deacon spoke with his hands on his hips, "Goodness gracious was it a long time ago... you'll have to forgive me. My memories of the time aren't so willing to come back. There was some... surreptitious business that I didn't know I was involved in until it was too late." The knight shook his head, "Something underhanded. I and a few others were removed from our positions despite being one of the more reliable squads."
He brushed at his long beard a bit longer, "Ah, memory hiccup, I suppose. Given what sorcery is about nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if my memory was tampered with." Ethan
"Yeah that makes sense man. It's all a power game. They try to climb a ladder with only a few rungs. There's not much to gain out there. In fact, a man like Garon would only give titles that mean nothing. It's really just all for show."
Ethan looked to the nearest table, somewhat distract by old trinkets. He picked up a rather old candle holder. It was surrounded by iron leaves and no doubt crafted by professionals who were long dead. He thumbed over it a bit before setting the holder down and turning back to @deacon.
"Unfortunate that you were caught up in someone's game, but that's how it is over in Nohr right?"

"Hmm... well... there is truth in that," spoke Deacon solemnly with a shake of his head, "That is what an army is to them after all. Chess pieces. It is a strategy to sacrifice one piece to profit the master in some shape or form that is not immediately seen. Perhaps I was too soft of a soldier and they required soulless killers, ah, but who am I to judge now?"
The knight exhaled and leaned against the table, "Well, it's not a fond topic... but it was good to get off my chest, even if it's for a little while." Suddenly, his face perked up and a grin crossed his face, "Say! I'm sure you've a story to tell of yourself. How did you become a merchant, hm? I do love to hear tales of a man's upbringing!" Ethan
"Ah." Ethan covered himself well. He showed no external surprise. "There's not really enough to go around back home ya know? I started small, kind of selling whatever I could get my hands on. It wasn't much, but it was gold that I needed to survive." He shrugged. "Managed to get lucky with a merchant who wanted to trust a teen with gold so that worked out for me. In fact, if it wasn't for that man I wouldn't have gotten out of there. To cut a long story short, I eventually managed to get enough coin to establish my own route between the countries, next thing you know I'm out here traveling myself. It's nice to see the world."

Ah, the simple life of a merchant! Deacon nodded to the man with a wide grin on his face, "Ahhh... indeed! Pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps! An admirable effort to get on in life! You should be proud of yourself, good man!" He gave the man a strong pat on the back, "I commend you for taking that step. Hoshido is plenty different from Nohr, is it not? I speak not only of the beauty of the land, but the culture! It must've been hard to get used to at first! I myself am learning plenty of differences. Can't bring my boots on the floors, and I shouldn't be so boisterous indoors! Hahaha, the latter is quite difficult." Ethan
"Plenty different?" Ethan scoffed. "That's only half of it. The food was the hardest to get used to. It hardly leaves me full. I eat plates of it and feel like I could eat several more. Of course it all gets back to me and I end up catatonic for several hours." The wanderer laughed. "It makes traveling harder. Though, I'll give them that. This place is beautiful. I wasn't used to all the grass and sunlight. It was a system shock. Though it's quite nice when you get used to it."

"AHA! The food, indeed!" Deacon laughed aloud with a boom to his voice. The quarter quieted briefly and glanced in his direction. Taking notice of this, the tips of the knight's ears turned a shade of pink. He cleared his throat and spoke with a quieter tone, "Yes, yes, same. Yet, as sentient beings, we are quite adaptable. Say!" His hand tapped the man's arm, "Speaking of food, perhaps we can enjoy some local eatings, hm? It'll be my treat for humoring this foolish knight! Besides, the morning will soon be noon."
The donkey behind him let out a honk and a squeal, thus the knight reached out and patted his muzzle, "Ah, yes, I must also feed my companion. What say you? Will you join us for lunch?" Ethan
Ethan glanced down the final row of merchants. So far, he had walked three of them in hopes of something nice. And so far, he hadn't found a single thing worth picking up. Gray eyes turned to the donkey as it squealed. "Yeah. You know what, I can join you. In fact, I saw a man and his wife selling noodles and fish down in the last row. It shouldn't be much and if it is I can pay myself. Do you and your trusty steed feel like trying some?"
The wanderer felt a certain level of comfort with the man. In fact, an unusual level of comfort came from the man. Maybe it was the fact that both men had been forsaken by Nohr and were most likely to be attacked if a random soldier happened by. It didn't matter. Ethan was comfortable around him for now.
