The Samaritan
Hadassah and Deacon
Shortly after the events of A Foolish Decision
Noon, along the dusty road
Nobles were bad, but so were their loyal servants. She wasn’t just let off the hook as far as they had taken her, rather, they took further advantage of a weak and starving manakete. There were beatings along the way, along with taunts of the weakness of her race. So what if they were servants? They weren’t slaves like her race was, so on and so forth.
Hoshido was a far place… so it was only natural that they took their time getting there. When they did get there, Hadassah’s appearance was close to that of a shriveled grape.
“Never return to Nohr to threaten us!” they shouted as they dumped her on the side of the road and tossed her dragonstone into a tree.
Hadassah lay on her back in the sun, only able to comprehend the pain her body had been put under. Despite all her philosophies, nothing would take the edge off of discrimination. She may have appeared weak, but her mind burned strong with hatred.
Survive… survive so I can go back there and burn them all! They’ll pay for what they did! So on and so forth.
But how? She couldn’t move, let alone crawl back to her dragonstone… and there it was, dangling in a branch so high above her…
Nothing could be done. Her body wasted away from lack of nourishment, and it wasn’t as if a bird would so willingly land in her mouth.
“This is… it…” she sighed, “… It’s over…”
Nevertheless, before she was able to resign herself to her fate, a large shadow loomed over her. Even now, her vision blurred…
A painful death at the hands of a bear… not a horrible way to go out. She wound end as an unremarkable speck on this unremarkable planet.
Hadassah closed her eyes and awaited claws to rend her to pieces…
… any time now.
Suddenly, Hadassah felt her mouth being opened, and cool water was poured in gently. What’s this? Someone had come across her?
“Are you alright, young miss?” spoke a strong deep voice, “Do not fear. I am no enemy of yours. Allow me take you to a safer place.”
Thank the heavens…
“Uh… uh-huh…” was her strained reply. At that moment, she felt her body lifted up and placed onto an animal. She heard the bray of a donkey and felt its smooth fur beneath her legs.
“Away with us, Sir Donkey! Let us take the poor maiden to the nearest inn!” thus said the man.
Hadassah struggled to keep her eyes open, but alas, her mind drifted away and her consciousness ceased for a time.
It was no accident that they had met.
Deacon had heard on the wind of the servants. He saw them from afar, but he was too slow to stop them from beating her. However, they saw him and his imposing size, and broke into a panicked run before missing the bridge and falling headfirst into the canyon.
However, he had saw them throw something earlier into a tree. It wasn’t that high for a man of his height, even more it sparkled brilliantly in the sun, and he easily plucked it from the tree. Curious.
Regardless, the woman lay against Sir Donkey’s burden, a victim of the cruelty of Nohrians. Such senseless violence had no place in Hoshido! This land was too good for people of such low humanity!
Deacon looked upon the woman he took with her. Her features were sunken, yet she still had a youthful beauty about her.
Why did they do that to her? he wondered. She had dark skin, pointed ears, and raven, black hair. An elf? Ah, yes… elves were not as welcome in Nohr, he remembered that. Even so, she received the beating that a thief would.
The insensitivity!
“Fear not,” he declared with a compassionate fervor even as she slept, “No foul man or beast will touch you with the intent of harm so long as I stand by your side!” He faced the path forward with a fierceness in his eyes.
