Warm streams of light filtered through thin curtains and onto tiny pots holding even tinier sprouts. Little green leafs poked out of the soil and soaked up the light. The shop was quiet, peacefully so, until the back door had been loudly slammed. The one who had slammed it leaning herself against the door with a relieved sigh as she began to worm herself out of her work shoes. Cas placed a large basket overflowing with a variety of different greens and colorful flowers on a small table and began to climb up the stairs to her room. Early morning pickings were both her favorite and most hated part of the day. As a child she always loved waking up early to help John and Izzy in the garden. Now that they weren't here and all the work was left to her, morning tending had lost a good part of it's appeal.
Now freshly clean and in comfortable clothes, Cas picked the basket from the table and carefully began to sort it out on the front counter. The clashing scents were enough to make her nose tickle. Chamomile, Echinacea, Comfrey, and many more had made their way into clean jars. The curtains had been pushed aside to allow more light in, the windows opened slightly to air out the room. Plants held in colorful pots had been watered and relocated to better receive sunlight. The quietness of the shop has returned, and Cas was nearly tempted to take a quick nap. It wasn't like she got many costumers anyways. With her chin firmly placed in her palm and her cheek against her fingers, Cas began to doze off.
It was but only an hour, maybe two, but a young man, some may assume to be a child, quietly rolled his wheelchair towards the small building. His arms stopped for a moment, as he took a deep breath, and wheeled himself a bit more to the door.
Knocking not as loud as he'd like, he let himself in. "The herbalist dwells here, correct...?" His voice said, with a somewhat emotionless feel to it, as he glanced around. Then he spotted her, a lady, perhaps younger than he himself, yet she was sleeping? Terrible work ethic, it honestly bothered the young man, as he wheeled himself closer.
From the time her closed her eyes to when the voice spoke, it didn't feel like more than a few minutes. It didn't feel like she was actually asleep and yet when the young man in front of her spoke she jumped as if he had slammed the door. She quickly rubbed her eyes before looking at the customer in front of the counter with eyes still wide with surprise. There was a small red spot on her cheek from the pressure of her palm, and she hope that it was as obvious as it felt.
She honestly wasn't expecting customers for another hour or so. Come to think of it she had never seen this man come into the shop before. In fact, she doesn't recall ever meeting him before. He was rather frail and young-looking, like a sick child.
The boy quietly pulled a bit at his clothing, as he examined the lady. She looked like the exact opposite of a professional, and to be entirely honest, it didn't make him have the most confidence in her abilities. He was used to a horde of doctors and nurses to tend to him back in his hometown, but he had an issue while on a journey here, which certainly wasn't the most pleasant.
"I don't exactly understand how your job works..." He said, reluctantly letting it be known his lack of knowledge in this kind of field. He had a lot of knowledge, but specialized career knowledge was yet to be his. "However, I heard you may be able to help me... Do you have anything to restore my energy?"
Cas thought for a moment. And then another moment. With a short nod she set off to the shelves. Clear jars big and small filled with liquids to greens to flowers and berries to gels lined the walls. As she searched through the masses she began to pin the bangs obscuring her view back. She never understood how the long strands always managed to escape the tightness of her braids. Her hand was out in front of her jars, fingers wiggling slightly. [Energy boost, Energy boost...]
Cas returned to the counter with four containers, making sure to properly space them out so that the man could see exactly what what inside. She would start on the far right, a jar holding a type of root, and work her way down. Her finger tapped the top of each container as she explained the plant's effects.
"Maca. It's good for improving energy, stamina, and memory. Best taken when baked, roasted, or prepared as a soup." Cas moved her finger to the glass container filled with bright red berries next to it.
"Schisandra. It's for increasing resistance to disease and stress, increasing energy and endurance. Boil this down to make a tea but a word of caution, it may cause stomach pain and skin irritation." Next, a jar holding yellow flowers still attached to the stem and root.
"Rhodiola. Used for increasing energy, stamina, strength and mental capacity. Like the Schisandra, it's best if you boil it down to a tea. Don't take for longer than 10 weeks." The last and final jar, holding leaves and roots.
"Eleuthero. Improves immune system response, mental clarity, and memory. This one is best as a tea also."
Cas, who was use to speaking less than a few simple words, was experiencing cotton mouth from the explanations. It surprised her how well she actually remembered the plant's uses and effects. There was a large book in the counter's drawer that she would always have to refer when handling costumers. A small swell of pride bloomed in her chest. With the pride, however, she also felt the similar sensation of tiredness begin to creep up. [How silly. Tired just from talking.] Cas was thankful that it was exhaustion she felt and not frustration.
Asinine listened carefully, paying close attention to the information, as to learn it himself. He didn't have any real interest in herbs, but he knew one day he'd research them either way. Taking a close look upon each of the container, his glance fell on the final two.
"Rhodiola and Eleuthero sounds like they may be of the most use to me. Can they be mixed into a single tea, together? Tea repulses me, so if I purchase them, I'd rather have to have tea only once, instead of twice." He asked this plainly, his voice never changing throughout.
Meanwhile, he started digging through his bag, before removing a little sack of gold, most likely 80 pieces, which definitely was a decent pay. "Besides that, this should most likely cover any such purchase."
"They can be brewed together, yes, though I can't guarantee it will taste good. Add honey if you like. It's also a good energy provider." Cas scooped the containers and began to put them back into place, her free hand already reaching for one of the drawers next to her. Inside lay boxes of different colors holding dried flowers, roots, and herbs. She plucked a hefty handful of both the Rhodiola and Eleuthero, along with a knife and a few small cloth bags. She placed the supplies on the table and set to her work. She took one long look at the young man before separating the dried herbs according to his assumed height and weight.
The jiggle of gold pieces stopped her steady hand. The tea bags didn't weigh enough for warrant the small sack of gold. The herbs sold cost no more than 10 pieces at the very most. A large part of her screamed to just accept the money. The smaller part simply stated that it was beyond wrong to do something like that to a sickly young man. Cas couldn't help but agree with the small voice.
"You needn't pay so much." The words stumbled awkwardly out of her mouth. "The tea doesn't cost more than 10 pieces." The knife scraped against the cutting board as the freshly diced herbs filed into the small bags. 13 in total, with only a quick sew to close them up before they become ready for use.
"If you like, I can brew you some right now. You can have a bit of energy for your journey back." Cas offered as she reached into the counter's drawer for the sewing kit.
Asinine listened quietly, nodding his head a bit, before observing the girl as she got to work. He didn't really see the point to all of this. After all, whenever he was too sick, he'd just go to a nurse, or something of the sort... But with herbs... Perhaps this would help for long term health? He wasn't certain, the gaps in his knowledge bothered him, yet he was much too vain to admit it.
"Oh, you can have the whole sack, I really don't care." He said casually, about half the reason he was paying that much, was because he didn't feel like taking the time to separate the gold to the proper amount. It'd be much easier to just give extra gold. Besides that, he genuinely didn't care too much for such a measly amount.
"But... You can brew it, I don't really feel like moving right now..." He said this, but also observing the tea making process could help him have a greater knowledge of tea. Of course he didn't really care about tea, or herbs, but the only thing ever required of him, due to his heritage, was to seek knowledge. All knowledge. Honestly he didn't even care about the knowledge he had, but if he had one task, he was gonna do it.
"I see." Cas was looking at the sack of gold. "If that is the case, I thank you for your generosity." She took the gold slowly and placed it on the counter; a reminder to herself to count, record, and put away safely once the man had left. With the topic of payment taken care of, there was only the matter of sewing left.
Needlework was something that proved very difficult for Cas. Even before the loss of her vision she was prepared to make the switch from right to left. Her writing was clean. Her marksmanship still needed work, but even that wasn't horrible. Her sewing, on the other hand, was the only skill that had yet to catch up. The bags were all sewn shut. The work was rough, but it would have to do.
"Was planning to anyways." And she was, actually, if only to steal a quick bite to eat. She didn't have breakfast before gardening and she was beginning to feel the emptiness in her stomach. The kitchen was tiny and tucked away from the "shop area". Over the dying fire was a kettle hanging off the side by a metal hook. Using a rag Cas removed the kettle, then grabbed a clean mug and spoon from the table. It wasn't until she made it back to the counter she did remember that she was suppose to sneak a bite before returning. She groaned inwardly, and so did her stomach.
Cas grabbed one of the bags and placed it at the bottom of the mug. Once the hot water was poured in she made her way back to the kitchen to return the kettle and grab the little jar of honey. She left without eating. Food could wait a few more minutes. Plus, the snack would probably only succeed in making her more hungry.
She watched and waited for the tea to be finished. The bag was fished out using the spoon, and the mug was passed to the man. Cas wiped the spoon on the rag and placed it next to the jar of honey.
Asinine quietly glanced around the little building, not replying with a you're welcome, and in general he seemed disinterested. A strange young man, he kept looking, before glancing back at the lady to watch the tea making process. It seemed like an unnecessary amount of work, for such a liquid. After all, Asinine wasn't a tea person.
As soon as everything appeared to be done, he grabbed the spoon, and putting it into the honey, he dumped four spoonfuls into the tea, before mixing it around. He wasn't a honey person either, but a sweeter taste was more pleasant to his taste buds, taking a sip, his nose scrunched up. She was right when she said it wouldn't taste good, and the honey didn't make it much better...
He awkwardly started downing it, a quarter being drank, before he started to look a bit sicker than usual, almost as though he'd vomit. "... Why do people like tea...?" He muttered as his hand covered his face, as he tried to hold himself back from vomiting.
In the process of throwing the used tea bag Cas had prepared a cup of her own tea. A mixture between Chamomile and Peppermint, one of John's favorite teas. When she had returned the man had taken his first gulp. She hid her smile behind her mug, and disguised her little laughs as coughs. With her own spoon she began to scoop some honey into her tea.
"You weren't kidding when you said that tea repulsed you." Cas reached from behind the counter and grabbed a bucket. Gently, she took the mug and placed the bucket in his hands. She hoped that he wouldn't actually vomit, mainly because that was her vegetable bucket and she really didn't want to spend the rest of her morning cleaning it out. The mug was placed on the counter, and Cas continued to stir the honey into her tea.
"Tea tastes good to some people. Some people hate the taste but drink it for it's benefits. It's a curious thing, but I personally like tea." Cas shrugged and took a gulp of her tea. The young man was naturally pale but the little color was starting to fade. She placed her mug down, a concerned look on her face.
"Hey, are you okay?" She knew it was a silly question, but how else was she suppose to voice her worry.
Asinine accepted the bucket quietly, and put it in his lap slowly. His lack of any actual speed, made it seem quite likely if it was anywhere else, he wouldn't be able to get to it in time. He was feeling pretty lightheaded, as he tried to pull the tea to his mouth again... His body visibly pulled away, as he forced some more down.
Putting it down, he covered up his mouth, until it got down all the way. "... I-I'm fine..." The scholarly boy muttered, as he started to lean off to the side, almost as if he was going to fall out of his seat, and crash into the ground.
His arms weakly fell to his side, as his eyelids lowered quite a bit... How he wished he could just be back home... There wasn't even any cake to drown out the taste here...
Cas slowly put her mug down after taking one last drink. He looked about ready to pass out, and this was certainly the first time something like this ever happened. Great, she thought, your first job alone and you've killed the customer. She hopped over the counter and placed a hand on his shoulder, preventing him from slumping any further. Cas began to awkwardly pat his shoulder softly. Her eye searched every inch of the shop in hopes of finding something that could help.
Any food or drink was too risky. It would most likely bring up any of the tea he was struggling to hold down. But maybe that was what needed to happen. The tea would have to taken anyways, if he did want this energy boost in had come in for in the first place. She saw his arm fall to his sides and Cas grabbed the bucket before it could topple over.
Asinine's body threatened to slump further over, but the lady kept him up, his eyes fell shut, as he seemed somewhat unresponsive. His stomach started to move, and so did his throat, like he was near going to vomit, but it didn't come out.
His eyes suddenly opened again, as he forced himself straight, and covered his mouth. "I... Suppose I've drank enough for now..." The young man muttered. His immune system was so weak, that even something that was meant to help, wasn't doing as much help as it could.
"Definitely." Cas huffed a weak laugh as she agreed. The hand stayed on his shoulder until he was able to sit back up properly again. "You should get use to it the more you drink it. You'll start to feel better soon. Once it's in your system."
She looked at the cup to see just how much was left. Surprisingly, there was a little less than half a mug. It was definitely more than enough. For now at least. Cas had never seen someone react so badly to drinking tea. Then again, she never really saw anyone other than her family drink the tea. Most customers were in and out as quick as possible.
"You don't have to push yourself to drink so much. The tea is okay cold. Drink a gulp every hour or so and you should be fine. As long as you have at least a cup in your system by the end of the day."
