The monastery bell tolled at the turn of the hour, and the signal for every student to retreat into their classrooms.
Class Is In Session
An introduction to the General Studies Classroom, as hosted by the Madame
As of this time, mathematics were taking place, covered by a maroon-dressed professor, a very attractive woman, lovely in form and gait. Of course, this beauty was a double-edged sword, as while she was appreciated for her glamor, her students seemed very, very distracted.
Dreamy looks were awoken by the snap of a steel stick on a hardwood desk, and eyes fixated onto the stony, crimson glare of the professor.
With a sharp inhale, she folded her arms and tilted her head down, thin glasses shimmering in the light rays from the window panes. “Mind onto matters, young masters and mistresses. Understand at this moment that you are all being fashioned into the finest officers that Fodlan has yet to see.” Her rod tapped onto a book on the desk before her, “A little dreaming, a little folding of the hands, and the next thing you know you have totally missed the point of the conversation of the day…”
From where she stood, the professor spotted a few paling faces.
“… Ergo, if you have been paying attention, please be prepared to be asked to share notes before next class meeting. Now, where was I?” She turned around and hovered her finger across the board, “Oh, yes, multiplication. Does anyone have any questions at the moment?”

The armoured form of Odette Von Rosenberg was an oddity, even amongst the students of monastery. Glad head to foot in plate steel, every inch of her skin was covered from sight. She could feel her attention start to slip as the class wore on, even the lithe form of the Madame not enough to keep her attention.
The Madame's words quickly snapped her attention back, doing her best to make it not immediately obvious that her thoughts had been elsewhere. Her armoured gauntlets clacked on wood as she straightened up, neck cricking slightly. Fortunately she was well versed in the subject of mathematics, so if the Madame did ask a question, she'd be alright.
Markus had diligently taken notes throughout the Madame's lecture, but he still wasn't quite on the same page as everyone else... As much as he loved science and his research, mathematics had always been his weakness. He was momentarily distracted by slight clacking of Odette's armor, but he quickly refocused his attention on the professor.
"So, just to ensure I understand the concept..." Markus stated, after raising his hand. "Multiplication is basically just repeated adding of the same value... Yes?" As he awaited the Madame's response, he was once again caught off guard by Odette's armor... He wondered why the girl wore it everywhere... There had to be a reason, didn't there? Well, that was something he'd have to figure out later. But not now. Now, he needed to focus on class.

At the same time there would be another somewhat odd student in the class. However she'd be a bit odder than most here as she'd be leaning back in her chair with her decently big hat covering her face. On the metal stick hitting a desk there wouldn't even be a flinch from her as she'd just stay in that same position. Nearby students could tell that she was sleeping if her quiet snoring is any indication. But she'd be like this in every class that has to do with math, and even when woken up tends to give the right answer before, usually to the current teachers annoyance, she goes back to sleep once more...
During classes on magic or crests however, she pays attention quite eagerly and would write down practically every word that's heard in a notebook. But since this is a class based around math, she has taken to sleeping through a whole session again...

The eyes of the Madame quietly watched the room, fingers brushing together in contemplation.
Hmm…
First, she regarded the suit of armor that seemed to jerk to life, signifying that, yes, the student who was sitting there was actually a student. Lady Rosenberg, a silent lass whose face no person within the monastery had ever seen. No matter where she went, the clunk and clinking noises served as the harbinger of her arrival.
The poor thing, if she hadn’t known any better, Lady Rosenberg lived in that armor. Surely her childhood was a troubling one.
Nevertheless, catching her attention with the raise of his hand was the studious servant of the Gloucester House, Mister Dael.
“That is the essential understanding, yes,” responded the Madame with a nod of her head, “A simpler conclusion is that multiplication is addition of the same number. In fact, division is subtraction, breaking down numbers to the lowest prime value. Very good, Mister Dael.”
Her eyes wandered to the corner of the room, spotting the sleeper in the corner, Miss Kirisame. Her origins are unknown, untraceable to anywhere, and for that reason, a quiet warning was issued by the professor’s “peers.”
With a gentle sigh, the Madame sauntered with her hands rested on her hips, stopping next to the desk of the little woman, and kneeling down to look beneath the brim of her hat.
Out like a light, or so it seems, the soft snoring was difficult to trust.
The Madame returned to her desk and began to wipe down the chalk board. A glint appeared in the professor’s eyes and a smile stretched across her face.
“I think it’s time to drop the assumption that your general studies professor is someone who covers the topics of children, important as multiplication is. You all ought to know how to do math by now.”
There were collective confused looks among the majority of the classroom.
“You are all adults attending the distinguished Garreg Mach, ergo there is little time to go over the elementary,” she continued, “General Studies, or rather, General Officer Studies is a practical course assigned with the task of granting onsite experience of the battlefield.”
There was a shift of atmosphere in the classroom, a part in excitement, the other in fear. In the meantime, the Madame bent down behind her desk, stood back up, and slammed a small tower of papers on top of it. “Do we have any questions? Inquiries? Concerns? Complaints?”

Mathematics weren't his strong suit, he could admit straight off. Having grown up being home-schooled in-between jobs, his father did his best but he was no professor. Still, Cassius was determined to make the most of it. His experience in practical combat had been a boon to him so far, but as far as other subjects... Not so much.
The uniform of the Officer's Academy was still something he was getting used to. It itched a bit, and felt even more stiff and tight than his armor. The sight of the girl wearing her armor to class, which was abnormal, made him wonder if he could get away with wearing his own armor to class instead. It might not be comfortable, but by the goddess did it feel better to him. He felt more in his element when wearing it. But he also acknowledged the practical issue -- namely that lugging such a heavy thing around would prove to be problematic to his levels of fatigue. That was the biggest advantage these garments brought about. They were soft and light as a feathered compared to his armor. They would not exhaust him as easily.
Not that he didn't feel strangely exhausted already with this class. Sitting in lectures was not something he was used to either, at least in a setting like this. His father homeschooled him, sure, but they always kept it short and to the point, and he used lots of examples and tried to focus more on the practical aspects, made him more active in actually doing things instead of just listening. These were long, drawn out lectures and he had to bring a hand to his mouth to cover up the yawn that had begun to form from his lips.
At the least the concept of multiplication was simple, so he didn't have too many questions about this. The blue-haired lad decided to abstain from questions this time around, though he wouldn't have had much time even if he did decide to speak up. It was quick as a dash that the more-formed woman at the head of the room seemed to change her mind and swap the topic to what he had been hoping for since he had heard of this class. Actual practical exercise. Finally! Something he could do!
While curious about the stack of papers she had suddenly slammed onto her desk, when prompted he did finally speak up. Calm, a little blunt but with as refined a matter as he could muster -- despite his common background.
Markus was practically beaming, glad he at least had the basic understanding of the concept now. Though, he had to admit, the Madame's sudden change of tone both simultaneously worried and excited him... She'd gone from a somewhat motherly tone to a mischievous one in a mere instant. One thing he knew for sure was that this was certain to be an... Interesting year.
Markus himself wasn't much for combat, but he could handle himself if need be. He much preferred to handle conflicts a peacefully as possible. But, then again, Outrealm Gates did tend to appear close to battlefields, for some reason. Perhaps he could sneak off and attempt to find one? No, that would be highly irresponsible... His classmates would be counting on him, after all. But perhaps once the battle was over, yes... Maybe then.

The sudden shift in the Madame's demeanor caught Odette off guard, as did the declaration and subsequent question of practical work. It wasn't that she dislike practical work by any means, but every teacher she'd had so far insisted on putting a sword or a lance in her hands because she wore armour. Her talents lay in the arcane however, which was why she was apprehensive.
Giving sidelong glances at her fellow students from behind her helmet, she deflated slightly. Most of them were martial students, for lack of a better word, and that meant they lacked the resistance to her dark magics. Imagine what her father would say if she killed one of the students by accident. The thought was banished from her mind as quickly as it came, a brief shake the pnly sign of the damned memory.
Focusing on the Madame, she raised a hand before signing a message. "If we are doing practical, what about magic?" It only occured to her after she finished the sign that the Madame might not even be able to read them.

As the class's shift changed from learning how to do various types of math, and onto more practical things for the battlefield. A not at all hidden yawn would come from Marisa from her corner of the class as she'd then start to stretch. Was she even asleep the whole time, or is she just very good at waking up when something interests her? In either case she'd lift the brim of her hat as she looks over the class and what everyone is doing or saying in it before leaning back in her chair.
Either wanting to know the question herself and thinking of the same thing, or she saw what the armored individual signed and could tell what they are saying she'd speak out to Fierre and for any other students that may have the same question. "So I'm sposin that your saying we'll be goin out ta get some experience out on the field of battle or by exploring some dangerous area then, or will we be sparring among eachother? In either case, since there are various types of mages and physical weapon users here. It would be best to figure out how everyone fights and acts along with what they want to get better at or learn so that their position and way of training can be figured out before putting any of us in a dangerous outward situation or training with eachother."
Stating all of this in a seemingly bored yet oddly enough intelligent manner. The girl would then show a grin on her face and continues talking but in a much more joking tone of voice. "Least that's what someone told me in the past, I honestly don't care much bout stuff like that since I'd be fine in trainin with anyone or taking down some bandits, da ze~"

Ah, yes. Mr. Auron. A winsome lad of humble origin. Surely he would make an excellent tactician one day if he studied his other subjects well.
The professor began to open her mouth to answer Mr. Auron’s and Ms. Rosenberg’s question, but the trap was shut the moment Ms. Kirisame began speaking. Just as was thought, the witch was a little more ahead than everyone else, nevertheless, one could not help but sense her cheek and lack of propriety in that slurred manner of speaking.
The Madame folded her arms with eyes upon Mr. Auron, “To be clear to everyone, our practicals shall begin when I have personally assessed the combat ability of each and every one of you in this classroom.”
Next, Ms. Rosenberg, “Magic in sparring is allowed, but only under direct supervision. Naturally, when we are out doing our practical, you will need to defend yourself against hostile forces, ergo, I recommend for you to not hold back.”
The Madame turned, picked up a piece of white chalk, and started scribbling on the board. When she had finished, the sentences read as follows:
1. What I aspire to be when I graduate from Garreg Mach 2. What weapon am I proficient in 3. What I wish to work on for this class
“Now, I would like all of you to consider yourselves for a moment,” said she as she put the chalk down and lifted a small stack of parchment, “What I have here are contracts for this class. I would like each of you to write your names on the top and answer all three questions, then sign your names at the bottom. After you’ve finished, bring them to my desk here and we will move on to the next phase of our agenda today.”
The Madame moved down the tables, giving each student a single parchment with certain swiftness. When all had been accounted for, she returned to her desk and sat down.

Markus thought on the questions for a bit... The first one was simple enough to answer. After graduating Garreg Mach, he wanted to become the most capable and diligent servant to the Lords and Ladies of House Gloucester as he could be. The second one was a bit trickier... Markus wouldn't say he was clueless when it came to his weapon of choice, elemental magic... But he also wouldn't say he knew very much. So he reflected this by simply writing "educated beginner." The third one was rather easy, as well. He simply wrote, "I would like to work on all things related to magic, both Reason and Faith, as well as battle strategy and theoretical research, though I understand if the latter is unrealistic." He had to work his Outrealm research in there somehow, and though he understood if the class wasn't meant for that sort of thing, what could it hurt to make his interest known? Plus, theoretical research could also apply to his personal favorite research topic... Dragons. With that, he signed his name, and took the slip up to the Madame's desk. Taking a short glance at her before walking away, he noticed something a bit... Off.
Huh... Pointed ears... He pondered, wondering what that could be about... Certainly most people didn't have ears like that. Hopefully, he'd eventually learn why. In other news, it was quite likely that he was one of the first to put his slip on her desk.

It appeared that before they could get to the practicals, their abilities would need to be assessed. A test, then. Interesting. Curious yellow eyes stared through their professor, but he did not voice complaint. If this was how she wished to do things, then all he had to do was answer the question and then prove himself able in battle. It was as simple as that. Before long, parchment would be passed out and he stared at the board a moment, pondering his potential answers. Should he state what these people who may have served Empires, Kingdoms or even just the Chuch... What they wanted to hear? Or just go with his gut?
It wasn't a hard decision. Gut it was. For better or for worse, it was just who he was.

He left it at that, bringing the slip of paper to the front before returning to his seat without a word.
Post by Marisa Kirisame on Oct 8, 2019 14:01:39 GMT
This test was pretty simple, and yet not simple in the slightest.. The second and third questions were extremely easy to answer seeing as she put down magic for the second and something about becoming even better with magic as the third. But the first one... She just doesn't know what she wants to do there. She could say something about taking over house Gloucester as it's head so as to get many people off of her back, but she also knows what she writes could and would be held against her in the long run. So letting out a big sigh she'd continue to stare at her paper with a frown for the longest time before finally writing down something random on it...
1. This one... I honestly don't know. I could be a traveling mage, an alchemist, a hermit in the woods or even the future lord of house Gloucester. Overall I just want to continue to be me I suppose? 2. Magic and anything to do with magic~ 3. Same as answer two, being everything about magic~ Though rune-work would be nice as well, along with alchemy if either of those two things are doable/available.
- Marisa Kirisame~☆
Looking over her paper a few more times after hopefully finishing it, she'd let out a sigh before getting up and placing the paper on the pile in the front as well, the handwriting covering it being surprisingly good for somebody that talks like they are from the country.. And she even drew a little star symbol after her name that seems to have no mistakes as it is symmetrical in practically all ways. Afterword she'd head back to her seat, pulls her hats brim over the front of her face once more, and goes back to snoozing. If it's real or fake, it is very hard to tell...

Tap tap tap.
Odette stared at the paper, eyes locked on the blank sheet. The second question was easy enough, dark magic was all she was good at. Swordcraft and the like had never been her strong suit, and she simply didn't have the muscle for archery. As for the third question, this was the Madame's class, so whatever she wished to teach. She was hardly going to rock the boat.
But as for the first question...
Tap tap tap.
Her armoured finger beat a staccato rythym on the wood as she stared at the blank space. What would her father want her to do? The thought sent a shiver again through her spine. He likely had spies in the monastery, was watching her even now. She could hardly write freedom, from her father and her family. That was what she wanted. Was why they had sent her to the monastery.
But maybe it would be better to return, to give up the flight of fantasy and... she froze as she looked down at the sheet, where her quill, still fresh with ink, had neatly etched the word freedom into the paper.
Flushed beneath her helm, she signed the document and returned it to the Madame.

“Oh, once you are finished, you may step outside of the classroom. Thank you.”
One by one, the students rose and placed their papers before the professor, then left the classroom… all except for a young girl sitting toward the middle of class. She held her head in her hands, large, troubled eyes locked onto the parchment before her.
The professor glanced up as she heard the silence of the room, if only to see the lone student. A puzzled brow was raised as the Madame rose to her feet and softly spoke in her direction, “Lady Bancroft?”
However, no answer was given, and the lass leaned her head down lower. The professor sighed and approached the girl quietly, bending her back down so that her head was next to the student’s.
“Etza.”
The girl let out a squeak of surprise before turning her head to the professor, her single visible eye wide as a saucer. A streak of ink flew across the page and into the desk itself. “Y-yes, M-M-Madame!” she stammered, hands scrambling to clean the mess with the parchment itself, essentially spreading the mess across the table. Her flustered face was a sheer red, and her pouting lips were twisting in embarrassment.
It was almost too pitiful, the professor nearly burst into laughter, yet she refrained. “My lady, do pull yourself together,” the Madame responded as she tugged a handkerchief from her chest pocket and wiped the girl’s hands, then her desk. “Are you having trouble with your contract?”
The girl’s head hung down, mumbling her words with almost unintelligible softness, “I... er... well... I’m... I don’t know how to answer the first question...” She appeared to wince, her body shrinking as much as it could.
“Etza, do look me in the eye.”
The girl froze, then slowly raised her head to meet the soft, gentle gaze of the professor.
“You are okay,” the Madame smiled, “I will give you some time to think about your aspirations. For now, would you mind telling me what you commonly practice for weapons?”
“Ah, I’m... I’m a dark flier... so... so magic and... sharp things...” Etza responded, “I have... I have a pegasus...” “I see, I see! Is there any thing you would like to work on in this class? Research, pegasus care, magic research?” “... oh... um... pegasus care sounds nice...” “Alright, very good.”
The Madame brought a new parchment from behind herself and put it down on the table, then began to write Etza’s answers in swift, eloquent cursive. “We will be working together for a while, so I would like you to take your time in deciding what you want to do when you graduate. I simply wish for you to be considering what you desire to do.”
The girl shuffled in her seat, downtrodden eyes staring down at the ruined parchment. “... My desire...?”
The Madame swept the both the fresh parchment and the ruined one into her hands, “Yes, in short, a long term goal. For now, I wish for you to join your classmates outside. Would you do that for me, Lady Bancroft?”
With a little nod, Etza stood up and, after a well-practiced curtesy, excused herself from the room. The Madame returned to her desk and stared at the papers as if boring a deep hole into them.
“Hmph, honestly, I ought to eat some people.”
