WHERE THE SCUM GATHERS URSULA VON BRANDT AND XYLIS THE WOLF MAGE
SET 1: THE NOHRIAN CAPITAL OF WINDMIRE SET 2: THE WOODS OF THE FORLORN WINDMIRE, OFFICE OF THE RECENTLY REINSTATED CAPTAIN URSULA VON BRANDT
0700 HOURS
In the castle of Windmire, within a room in a hall towards the lower rungs of the castle, a small ceremony had just taken place. It was a rare occurrence in which a soldier, fallen from grace, had recently won the favor of the government. The ceremony took place in the barracks, and while at first the person in question was met with unnecessary disdain, the reason for the restoration of rank shook the core of those watching.
"Mm, yes, while you lot were sitting here reading your tomes, von Brandt had been actively targeting rebel encampments that were housing the damnable Hoshidans. Within the last few months, over seven towns had confirmed reports of mutineer groups, discovered and thwarted by the actions of von Brandt. To reward her for her service and initiative, from this day forward, she will be reinstated into the rank of captain."
There were no objections, and the captain was allowed to return to her old office, where a couple of familiar faces had awaited her. Ashton Larsson, a dark flier who now captains over his own anti-air unit, and Polis Brink, a dark mage who was also promoted to captaining her own shock unit.
"Congratulations on your reinstatement, captain. After all the renegades you had eradicated in the name of Nohr, you deserve your position,” said Capt. Larsson with a salute, “But, suffice to say that we all pitched in for that one, eh?”
“Yes,” the witch replied with a nod, “I do wish you would all be recognized for your actions, but…”
Capt. Brink shook her head, “We all know, captain, we’re just happy you could return into the king's good graces.”
Ursula glanced to the couch, her brows furrowing gently, “… And Lucas? I haven’t seen him since the last incursion.”
“Bergstrom took a note of absence, captain. He will return after he is done with his business.” “I see.”
After a moment of silence, Ashton cleared his throat, “Well, I ought to be off. I have reports to fill in.”
“Same here, I’m afraid,” Polis groaned whilst digging her heel into the ground, “We should join forces some time, Captain.”
“Soon,” said Ursula, “For now, I have new recruits to address and an assignment to decipher. To your posts, my old comrades.”
With a salute to one another, the two captains left, leaving Ursula to herself. She proceeded to move behind the desk, tugging out the wooden chair that she had not sat in since she had lost her arm. That said, she lifted the prosthetic up into view and turned it over, flexing the spindly fingers a few times before letting it rest on the desk before her.
Hmph. All this because of you. At least you're a proper hand now... Xylis

The halls of the castle are always crowded when the older Dark mage attempted to make his way through the corridors... Everyone seemed to flood into them as soon as he arrived... At least that was the way it felt for him, or perhaps it was just his notoriously bad luck. It always lead to the same thing however, passerby's eyes looking up in awe and judgement at the man. Standing proudly at an height of eight foot five, and a staggering large build... Others couldn't believe that someone so large had become a dark mage... If only they knew he was a wolfskin as well...
They'd claim blasphemy... A being of his existence was an abomination considered by many... However, Xylis had learned to ignore the comments, and passing insults that had been barely contained under a whisper of breath. Today however, he seemed to be a bit more alert to the words, for some reason he had come back to Windmire, a place that was held in ordinance with the King, it was his home... And the place in which held Xylis's most disdained thoughts, though he would never admit to hating the King, but his subconsciousness begged him differently.
Suddenly two more people seemed to join the crowd ahead of him, both appearing from the same room. Discussing something amongst themselves. Looking down at them Xylis, could of sworn he had meet them once or twice upon the battlefield... At least he had seen them, his assignments always tilted more towards the silent and dirty work for the Kingdom. Passing by the door that they had just stepped out from, Xylis couldn't help but look in towards the small room. Resting at a desk, a woman with what one could assume was platinum blonde hair was playing with a prosthetic hand?
If Ursula had looked up, she would see a towering figure, sporting the normal dark mage robes, but if she followed the trail of the robe up to the head, she would see bright red eyes looking out from under the elms head, all in moving forward. He didn't stop and stare, but he was interested to say the least in who the woman was. Being as Xylis had never officially joined one of the other task force in which aided the kingdom, there was bound to be some that he didn't recognize... Being as he had never seen that woman before, he assumed she was one of the few he'd never met.
Suddenly everyone seemed to disappear from the hallway that had once been crowded... Standing there for a moment looking around, where had all the bodies gone? There's no way that it cleared out that fast... A small chill seemed to crawl its way down the wolf mage's spine. The small hairs on his body seemed to twitch ever so slightly, his hand reaching down to grab a hold of the cane... Secretly it was his way of casting magic... After all, he just etched the carvings of the spells into it, so he didn't need to log around a book. "Well... Either going to this hearing is dangerous... Or people decided to run home at lightning speed..."
The door to the office had opened to an ominous individual, a man of particular height and quality. An eye glanced up upon his entrance, following the crimson lights in his skull-faced head until he stood before her desk. The tinkering was put to a halt, and Ursula found herself leaning her head back as far as comfortably possible to look at him properly.
"It is training hour in the mage branch," she replied, "Just as well, many novice dark mages are skittish before uncommon entities." The scroll on her desk was unraveled and skimmed through. "... You are one of three people coming with me today, are you not?" Her finger ran down to a list of participants, along with notes left behind by the barrack sergeants.
Derrick Marcson, a wyvern rider, young and reckless, nobleman's son, watch him staunchly. Eleanor Rosethorn, a knight, follows orders to a T. And Xylis, a dark mage, highly experienced peer of yours, observe his actions closely for your benefit.
... Hm...
"Xylis, I presume. Thank you for your punctuality," Ursula rolled the scroll back, "There are two others that will be joining us." She stood up and folded her arms, "Indulge me for a second while we wait, as I am unfamiliar with you. What do you do on behalf of the king?" Xylis
Xylis seemed to scan the office of hers for a moment... He had been tasked with helping a rather newly appointed captain... No it would be more accurate to say reinstated captain. After all, the woman in front of him, he had remembered at one point being appointed as a captain in the past. When Ursula spoke about the prime training hours for the younger mages, he could only chuckle.
"Seems, that it has been quiet a while since I've been within the programs myself. I almost forgot what it was like to spend my days studying carefree." However, when she spoke about an unknown entity, all Xylis could do was nod his head. It was true that the giant wolfskin drew a lot of attention to himself in plenty of ways, after all... He was a staggering entity in height and size.
However, when she spoke his name, Xylis could only give his full attention to her, he hadn't revealed his name yet... So it meant that she managed to get some information about him through the capital... Which meant she truly was the captain he was seeking out, however he hadn't know it was such a large joint mission. Especially considering that two others would be joining them in the long run.
"Ahh... Well, as far as what I generally do... I guess it would be more accurate to describe me as an escort or espionage unit. I'm used to handle things with little to no attention to myself or the kingdom." He said with a bit of reluctance as he reached up to rub the mask in front of his face. Knowing it was impolite to talk to a captain with it on, he simply lifted it slightly to show his face underneath for a moment.
"Judging as we're going to be working together, it's best you remember my face, in case someone does try to pose as me... Albeit, that'll be rough for anyone considering my height, but if they where at a distance with just my mask it'd be an easy mistake." Underneath she would see a rather unexpected face, his red eyes, followed by slightly paled skin, and a neatly trimmed beard. He didn't reveal his ears to her since he hadn't fully removed the mask. Before replacing it back in it's original position.
In the brief moment he unveiled his face, Ursula’s eyes narrowed as she took in much of his details.
Cleft, chiseled, scruffy, pale complexion (although she would deem not quite as deathly), with eyes that shared the crimson hue emitting from the eye holes of his skull face.
“Given the fact that illusions are a large part of our prowess, I would not deny the possibility of a copycat as far as you go. Although simpler solutions, such as two individuals standing on one another’s shoulders and putting a similar bovine or buck skull on their head would grant comparable results. But, I digress.”
As her words finished, the entrance to the office opened, and the stout general from the ceremony appeared with two younger individuals following behind him. Upon the sight of the general, Ursula stood up and saluted.
“Captain von Brandt,” the man said with a nod of his head and a motion of his hand to the two recruits, “I have here your understudies.”
Derrick Marcson, a young man with unkempt brown hair and a fiery grimace, and Elenor Rosethorn, a young blonde girl with a stoic expression, eyes completely focused on the captain before them.
“Ah, and I see that the Wolf Mage has arrived,” the general jollily added, a palm pointed to the tall mage, “I take it that the captain is in the process of reviewing you?”Xylis

Xylis wasn't expecting the thorough analysis of his appearance, he could see her taking in as much detail as she could. Originally he had expected the captain to simply give him a glance over like the rest of the people in the army. A small smile crossed his lips followed by a small chuckle at her explanation of what someone would be able to do to imitate him. "As amusing as that sounds, it would be rather interesting for me to see another person on top of another just to copy my appearance. A rather inconvenient way to do so."
However, the two of their conversation was interrupted as the sound of approaching footsteps could be heard. Suddenly her office door seemed to swing wide open as a man entered without so much as knocking. A decorated General walked into the room followed by two others. A young man with messy unkempt hair, an a young woman that seemed to be trying to borrow some holes into Ursula by starring into her soul. Xylis turned to look back at the captain to see her saluting... He didn't believe in the worth of saluting another individual, everyone was supposed to be equal right?
The general however turned towards Xylis looking up at him with a rather happy look upon his face. It seemed that he was still known as the Wolf mage through all this time. The man nodded, the bovine skull moving as he did. his fiery red eyes glancing down at the group introduced as understudies. "Indeed, I have been informed that I should work with the captain for a time... I have a simple understanding that she required someone that knows the forests like the back of their eyelids." He said in a teasing voice to a degree.
"Truth be told, I was not informed that there would be understudies..." He said looking over the two new additions to his team. Turning back to the captain, he noticed that Ursula seemed to still be saluting the general even through his small speech. "I think I can get along well with this captain... She has a sense of humor that I found... Enjoyable for a moment." He said in his rather monotone voice, not revealing his true emotions that she had just witnessed with his laughing.
