Koume didn't hate the morning, per say. Mornings held the moments where she could sit and let herself be still. There was no anger in the morning. There were no humans. It was just herself and nature around her. It was the pinks and oranges of the morning dancing with the lingering night that hung in the sky. That moment between night and day brought her a sense of peace that felt so rare. It was hard to hate something that gave her such a gift.
So no, the wolfskin didn't hate the morning. She thoroughly enjoyed mornings, but she absolutely hated waking up. It was with a great struggle that she woke up everyday. She made her bed in the flowers or the trees- depending on what country she was in- and without fail, they always seemed to hug her tighter over night. This morning, however, was different.
Koume sat in the silence with her back against a large tree. It was morning, she was sure, but the sun hadn't began to shoo the night away yet. She hugged her knees close to her chest and rested her chin on her knees.
Going back to Aki always made her restless. The shrine maidens- her caregivers, at least- always welcomed her back with open arms and warm smiles. They doted on her and fussed over her nomadic lifestyle. Was she eating enough, was she staying out of trouble, was she making friends; Koume fought the smile the concern would induce. The others though...
The girl squeezed her legs tighter before standing up. There was still a long way to go until she reached the border. Getting an early start would do her mind some good.
Walking through the forest was a bit of annoyance for the taller man, most people wouldn't mind the aging leaves, and the small branches that lined the giant beasts known as trees. But for Xylis, a man that stood head and shoulders above most, he would almost always brush his head along the lower branches, often times causing quiet the ruckus as he broke one or two branches. A small snarl escaped the large wolfskin, as he pushed further into the forest. "Why, why did the shrine have to be through a forest of all things, couldn't they be more civilized?"
He was grumpy, the man had begun traveling earlier that morning, when the moon still shone brightly throughout the night sky, but now he simply had began wandering aimlessly within this forest. The sunlight peaking through the branches of the trees, dancing to the tune of the shaking leaves, allowing small spots of light to appear on the otherwise blackened forest floor. Being as he was, Xylis wasn't one that cared much for the natural forested areas, mostly because they where old and decaying in Nohr. Standing barely, on their last lifeline... Ready to croak at any time... The world was cruel.
While the Nohrian's suffered at the decaying of their land, the Hoshidian's simply danced and held festivals with their easy going lives. Wasting all of the precious resources that the Nohrians where desperately seeking. A small cloud of rage could be seen building within the man, but he eventually brushed it away... As he came upon a clearing that allowed him to stand tall once again. Letting out a large groan, with a bit of a groveled growl, he hadn't notice the young woman stretching herself. His eyes finally catching her as he turned to look at the stranger.
She was young, quiet small at that... And she seemed to be a wolfskin, easily identifiable by her features... A small frown appeared upon his face as he looked her over. It wouldn't be good for anyone to know that he was traveling along this forest route, especially since it often or not got him in trouble with his past experience... She was perhaps a runaway, just like someone he had known back in his youth. Letting out a small sigh he turned towards the wolfskin girl, his hands down by his side as he approached her in the least threatening posture he could muster.
But Koume would see, the closer that the man got, the bigger her appeared... In fact a bit too big to be considered normal, looking him over she would see the dark robe covering him, often a sign of one being a dark mage. He wore a strange mask, resembling that of an elk's skull... Underneath the skull two red eyes seemed to leer out from behind them, a deep heavy voice soon would follow. "Weird to see a child so far out in the forest alone... You should head back, it's dangerous to be roaming these woods by yourself, especially with being a wolfskin."
Koume expected very little sounds in the morning. Of the ones she expected, a groan wasn't one of them. Low and loud, edging closer to a growl than an actual groan, the girl stuck a hand into her satchel in search of her stone. With her free hand, Koume prepared her claw-like nails to strike. She didn't know whether to anticipate an animal or a man, but what met her eyes seemed to be.. both?
At first glance, there was no telling what it was. It stood tall- too tall to be considered human- yet reaching the head, she was met with an elk's skull. She would've deemed it a creature if not for the dark robes it wore. It got closer then. With each step it took, it grew larger than before. It took only a few steps for the creature to make it's way to her. It's red eyes were visible now, and it loomed over her like one of the very trees that surrounded them.
Koume took a step back and lowered herself, ready to jump. If she couldn't find her stone, the least she could do is launch herself at the thing's face... Well, if she could even reach it... Even with a good jump, a feat like that seemed impossible. The girl frowned. Impossible or not, she was gonna do it if it came any closer to her.
Then the creature spoke, and Koume blinked back her surprise.
"A child? I'm not a child, you stupid giant!" The wolfskin stood to her totally impressive full height and puffed her chest. "Don't assume what I am just because I'm shorter than you! You gonna call a man a child because he looks like it to you?"
The fear that had began to form was quickly turning into anger, something it was much too early for. Of course, it wasn't her fault! It was the walking tree's fault!
"I've walked these trails before and there ain't no one who fought me here and won!" It was a fact that the girl took pride in, and possibly lied about just a touch, but what was it to this... person? What was he, her parent? He wasn't responsible for her, so what gives? "Why do you care where I go anyways? It's none of your business!"
Koume kept her eyes on the creature in front of her. She hated to say it, but they were intimidating. It was something she both envied and admired. To be so tall and menacing, that was something she could only dream of being.
"Say, what are you anyways? There's no way you can be human, but it's hard to tell from your smell what you are. You have.. other scents on you and it's confusing me." She crossed her arms and backed up a pace or two. It was there that she was able to properly look into the red of it's eyes without having to crane her neck. The wolfskin still had to do so, but at least it wouldn't be such a pain to do now.
The small girl seemed to back away slightly as he approached, the fear etched into her face was evident. That was until he began to speak to her. Xylis simple words of warning, bounced off of deaf ears. Apparently this smaller wolfskin didn't give a damn about what a wandering stranger had to say. She prattled off like a small machine gun, even going so far as to insulting him slightly. Something about remarking that he was an idiot or the like, because she claimed that she hadn't been a child. His eyes seemed to leer through the mask at her.
There was a small snarl that seemed to escape his lips, before he caught himself getting angry towards the little thing. Stepping back away from her, he shifted his stance slightly, she would soon see him stand up to his own full height. He had attempted to appear non threatening before, but it seemed taking that approach had warranted an out spark from this woman. His voice was a bit colder now as he spoke back to her. "You've say you never lost here correct? I know plenty of people that could easily turn you into the next pelt they wear."
He wasn't meaning to sound as mean as he did, nor was he noticing the effect he had when he stood fully up, she could literally see just how big the man was now... His shoulders broad, his head seemed to almost reach the skies from her position. He was no longer slouching down, but proving that he wasn't about to just simply attempt to be friendly. "As far as your question, I would treat anyone that is young as a child, it's evident that you are one. Especially with the way you're retaliating at the small statement."
However, when she began to speak about what he was, he knew that the scent upon him was strange to the other wolfskin... He had a gene in him that had reforged his entire body, that had adapted and changed him from being an average one... It had done something chemically and physically to his body. But all that could escape from his lips, was a dark horrid chuckle that could send a chill down anyone's spine. "I suppose you could call me a freak or an outcast... Nothing for you to worry about..." He said turning around and beginning to walk away.
She would notice the large shadow was heading towards the way of her church... He was just following blindly in the direction that the priest had given him. Speaking out over his shoulder towards her. "Look, I'm warning you not to wander these forest alone, at least hire yourself an escort or something... Because poachers are becoming more problematic for your kind lately." Even though Xylis never grew up with his own kin, it didn't mean he was heartless to their cause... After all, when you saw the pelt of a fellow wolfskin upon a humans shoulders or back, made any wolfskin's blood boil.
Koume was proud that she didn't flinch once the man stood to his full height, and even when his words began to form an edge she didn't wilt. Truth be told, she found it harder to hide her awe then to hide the wince. The man had been giant before, but he seemed to unfurl himself more and more until there was no sky beyond his form. The wolfskin was amazed, but that wasn't something she would be quick to let on. She would rather be made into a pelt than admit something so childish. She scoffed and rolled her red eyes. "Yeah whatever, I'd like to see them try."
She didn't indulge the man by replying back to his comment. Her clawed nails rhythmically tapped along her arm. 'Retaliating'... As if. Since when did it become 'retaliating'? That wasn't a question for her to figure out- since the meaning of the word was lost to her- so she threw it from her mind. Her brows continued to furrow, and her cheeks slowly began to puff out in anger. Even her hair seemed to be fluffing out.
She wasn't a child. She was just as mature, if not more so, than any other stupid adult! Children played with their stupid friends and ran home before dark because they were afraid of what hid in the shadows. Children lived empty days until they became tired of their mundane life. Children cried when others were mean to them, yet turned around and continued the process on someone else. Koume's claws dug into her skin. She wasn't a child, and she refused to let herself be lumped into that group.
"I wouldn't worry about you if you were dying out against that tree, so don't go thinking I'm gonna worry just 'cause you have a weird smell." The girl's voice was different then, but there hadn't been time to linger on it before she continued talking, her claws now free from her skin, "There are other things that make you a freak than just your smell, like your height."
"An escort? Does it look like I need a babysitter? I can take care of myself just fine! Just mind your own business from now on!" Koume watched at his receding form before looking at the ground. She had planned to wait until he was completely gone to continue her journey, but it was just her luck that he was walking in the same direction. A frown swallowed her face and her boot kicked the closest stone across the field. The wolfskin sighed and followed after the man. Maybe she would be lucky and they'd split at the next fork.
The small wolfskin in front of him seemed to be full of herself, often he could relate this to an insatiable pride... But something inside of him just placed her within the foolish category, perhaps because she was still young. But as soon as Xylis mentioned about her retaliation in his statement, she seemed to be quiet. All she did was puff up a little, as if she was trying to make herself seem a bit more intimidating. Instead, he could only liken her towards a little desert frog. Ones that puffed themselves up with air, and let out small squeaks.
The comparison actually almost made the tall dark mage chuckle. However, it seemed that she was still full of spunk as he was heading off towards the church. Speaking about how she wouldn't be worrying if he was dying out by a tree. He could only smile underneath the mask. Her voice seemed to change ever so slightly, when she began to speak about his smell... He was pretty certain he had taken precautions to alter his own smell, so no wonder she found it to be annoying a bit. "I suppose you wouldn't have to worry about that."
She could see a weird cane like then with inscribed runes upon it, he was using it to walk for the most part... Interesting to say the least. His mind humming with thoughts as he relaxed a little bit. There was hardly anyone left in this world that could worry about his death, he wasn't about to accept the fact of the girl behind him being worried over nothing. Xylis had plenty of concerns of his own, adding on another intolerable pup into the factor. After all, it would only increase the amount of stress he had, with dealing with her incompetency to understand there was far stronger people in the world than her small forest.
However, just when Xylis thought he was going to escape from the hotblooded youth, he noticed that she was following him once again. The giant of a man seemed to be slightly irritated, why was she following him? He didn't know himself but he seemed to peer back at her from the corner of his eyes. She could see the red glow from under his mask as he chuckled. "Well... I guess you've decided that I'm your babysitter after all? Considering you are either stalking me at this point, or you're just simply following me with the intentions of further displaying the childish behavior from before."
"Does sound not reach you from that height? Or is it the skull? I said I don't need a babysitter! I can take of myself, no problem! Have been since I was a little!" Despite the proud tone, something deep in Koume knew it wasn't something she should be proud of. Proud she was able to do it, but it wasn't something she should've had to do in the first place. She decidedly ignored his last comment before continuing on. "This route is the fastest out of the forest, and I got somewhere to be! If you really wanna get away from me I suggest you find your own route because I was here first."
She huffed before looking away from the man and into the trees to her side. Her eyes began to linger after a shot moment, stopping on the strange cane her 'companion' was using. The wolfskin's head tilted in curiosity. Just looking at it gave her a weird feeling, and she wanted to ask about it so much but... But... A smirk formed on the girl's face before she quickened her step. Either the man was fast or his legs just gave him an unfair advantage. He could've also been trying to get away, but Koume wasn't done with him yet.
"Hey, what's that cane for? Do you need it to walk or do you use it for something else, because those symbols give me a weird feeling. Like, really weird. Like when there's a storm and you can feel in the thunder in your bones. You're really tall though, so your bones are probably really weak. Are they really weak? I bet they are." Koume adjusted her bag and fixed her hood. She hadn't used this method in a while, believing herself to have out grown the 'talk until they leave' tactic. In this moment, however, maybe that childishness was what she needed. Call her a child, will he? Then that's what he'll get.
"Also why do you wear that skull? Is it 'cause you're really ugly? Is it heavy? Can you even see in there? Do you use the cane to feel the ground in front of you? Do the antlers ever get caught in places? I bet you have a hard time walking into buildings. How do you eat?"
A part of her was dying inside. If this petty act didn't get him going in the other direction, she'd be stuck with him until they split. And who knew when that would be. At least she wouldn't have to see him again afterwards. Koume drew some comfort in that.
