A Seasonal Culling Ursula von Brandt and Naru Keltan Cheve Early morning, overcast
A wagon bumped down a dirt road by cover of low mist, and upon its piloting seat sat a cold, corpse-like woman. Her long, silver hair draped over her shoulders like the hood of a venomous snake, and her black dress was akin to a funeral gown. Her stoic face was gaunt, yet striking of matured beauty, and her eyes seemed to glow in the darkness with an eerie violet light. There was no emblem upon her person to speak of her station, only that sitting in the back of the wagon were stacked coffins that carried along particularly discomforting stench. With the deathly odor came the accompaniment of sable avian scavengers from afar off, awaiting the waking moment wherein the crude caskets will be opened.
“Patience,” the woman cooed to her company, “Soon, there will be plenty for you to eat.” Her head lifted as her destination came in view, a fairly large Nohrian burg...Naru Keltan

Naru, the young troubadour, was not far along in his travels quite yet. Being rather weary of the Nohrian military, due to being raised in the Ice Tribe village, he had elected not to travel toward the Hoshidan border quite yet... Instead, he traveled south-east from his home, to Cheve, to gather the travel supplies his home-village lacked. That, and he was simply curious, as he always was. It was an excuse to see another place on his journey!
And so, early on his first morning in Cheve, he awoke in the room he'd rented in the local Inn. His excitement built as he gazed out the small window, eager to see what may be outside. To his surprise, he was able to see a woman not far off, atop a horse-drawn wagon, which appeared to be carrying a collection of caskets. Curious...

In a bit of time, the carriage finally stopped in the middle of the town square. Two men in soldiers garb appeared and acknowledged the strange woman.
“My condolences to the living,” she murmured, “These are young men of Cheve who gave their lives for the glory of Nohr.”
The faces of the men paled. “Glory of Nohr...” one of them seemed to grumble under his breath, “What good has spilling our own blood for Garon ever done?”
“Hush,” the other grunted with a jab of his elbow, “Come along, we need to identify these ones.” With heavy, reluctant strides, the soldiers rounded to the backside of the wagon to pull down the caskets. At the same time, the woman turned her face to the inn of the town.
Among the windows, there was the face of a young man with hair of bright color. Undoubtedly a lad of the Ice Tribe.
As Naru watches the scene play out, he is clearly too far away to hear anything clearly. However, he does see the man recoil, and is able to make out what is going on, thanks to the knowledge of Cheve's current stance against Nohr. Though he came from the Ice Tribe, Naru had chosen to remain neutral when it came to the war between Nohr and Hoshido. There was no point in choosing a side, so why cause himself even more trouble by doing so?
It was then that the strange woman turned to face him. He stared curiously back at the woman, eventually allowing a friendly smile to grace his lips. He waved at the woman sheepishly. She looked a bit unsettling, but at the same time gorgeous. A true work of art. Even if she did look a few years older than him.

The woman grimaced at the wave, curtly turning her head back to the soldiers who had climbed onto the wagon to bring down the caskets.
“Gods, how long was it before they were discovered?” one of them gagged, “Days? Weeks?”
“Be reverent to your dead,” was an ill-tempered response, ”They made the decision to lay their bodies down for their country.”
“Grr... of course...”
They pulled a few of the coffins down from the wagon and lay them on the ground. Villagers whose sons had been sent out were called from their homes to identify the dead. The faces of parents were ashen, pinching shut their nostrils at the stench.
“I will open the casket now,” announced the undertaker, “Please, mentally gird yourselves. Not all of them are... altogether.” She knelt down at the side of the casket and ever so slowly peeled away the wooden covering...Naru Keltan

Naru continued to watch the events play out, his curiosity quickly getting the best of him. He watched as the woman opened the coffin, the men gasping and turning away in horror. He couldn't make anything out, due to his distance, thankfully, but saddened all the same. It was a shame that so many lives had to be lost because of this war... Out of respect for the fallen soldier, he turned away and was silent for a few minutes.
After his moment of silence was finished, he closed the window, changing into his proper daytime clothing before heading down the stairs to the first floor of the Inn. There, the Innkeepers were serving breakfast, and he dropped a few coins into their jar before taking a seat, waiting to be served.

“Gods!” shrieked one of the soldiers with sheer disgust, “How are we supposed to tell which from what? The body is far from recognition!” Worse than his words was the abhorrent, vile reek that permeated the immediate atmosphere. A villager fainted instantly from the sight and scent, caught in the arms of another.
“I believe that this one carries... a few of them,” the woman rubbed her chin, unaffected by the stink, “I am certain that the other coffins bear better semblance of human form.”
“Close this coffin and put it away from the square, immediately!” ordered a captain-like fellow to her, “You ought to be ashamed of yourself for showing us this.”
“Horrors of war, sir,” she responded with a shrug of her shoulders, “I figured you ought to know that not every man comes back in one piece.” She placed the lid back onto the casket and secured it tightly, “... Especially rebellious children.” Her eyes rose to the top of their lids as she looked back to the captain. A perturbing chill accompanied her words, and in that instant he had drawn his sword and held it to her neck.
“You,” he hissed with eyes as squinted as can be, “Who are you?”
The woman lifted her head and flashed a roguish smile.
“A patriot.”
No sooner had the words left her lips than the rest of the coffins bursting open, revealing monstrous creatures with metallic masks, and nearby soldiers let out screams of terror before they were flung aside by their powerful arms.
“Faceless?!”
“It’s the fascists!” the captain cried, he immediately raised his sword to strike the woman, only for her to slide out of his reach like a receding wave. Darkness preceded her movements as she glibly rose to her full height.
“Go wild, my pretties,” she commanded the monsters as she dodged away into an alley nearby the inn, “Relish in the destruction before your lives be taken from you.”
“Get every able-bodied man to quell the Faceless! You two, with me! We need to hunt her down!” roared the captain as he begun his pursuit, and two other soldiers followed after him. More fighters rushed out of homes to clash with the abominations.Naru Keltan

As Naru waited patiently inside the Inn for his breakfast, his thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the screams of people outside. Naru flinched, and instantly raced for the door, slinging his staff off of his back. If someone was hurt, he would help them. It was his duty to do so, as a troubadour. As he exited the building, however, he was greeted with a horrifying sight.
Faceless!? Here? Gods... They must have been sent to quell the rebellion! By now, the woman he'd seen earlier had already been fading from his thoughts, and he wasn't quite able to put two and two together. All he knew was that there was going to be a battle. Now. He raced into the stables next to the Inn and found his horse, who was quivering slightly.
"Maple, let's go!" He cried, putting her saddle on as quickly as he could, before leaping atop his trusty steed, brandishing his staff. He rode out in search of anyone at all who could possibly need to be healed during this battle...

As Naru neared the battle, a female soldier upon an armored horse rode alongside him. “You there! Ice Triber!” she called out as she brandished her staff, “Civilians don’t belong in the heat of battle. Find shelter or leave for your sake! Now!” Immediately after she had spoken, she turned her horse to break away from his riding space, galloping towards the screams with an unusually valiant aura.At the same time, the pursuing soldiers had caught up to the woman, who had entered a building without windows. The door itself had been jammed tightly closed with immeasurable force.
“Come out of there!” the captain roared as he pounded his fist upon the door, “You’ll pay for this deed, fascist scum!”
“Why would she hole herself up in there?” wondered another, “It’s nothing but a vacant storage house...”
“Whatever she’s planning, she ought to be ashamed of herself,” continued the captain with a hiss as he kicked at the door, “Bring a torch here! We ought to burn it down anyway.”Naru Keltan
As the cavalier warned Naru, he shook his head, riding off toward the battle after her.
"Absolutely not!" He cried. "I have a staff and a bit of experience on the battlefield. I won't let innocent people die because I refused to use the gifts I've been given!" He swore, holding his staff out and scanning the battlefield for anyone who may already be injured... The Faceless themselves were horrifying beasts. As the name implied, they had no real face. Instead, a mask covered their entire face, dotted with air holes, through which an eerie gas would occasionally seep. Naru flinched at the sight, but continued his self-sworn duty...

The rider’s eyes glinted at the defiance of the younger man, and raised her staff menacingly toward his face. She halted as she looked him dead in the eyes with unwavering resolution, yet her voice dropped within earshot. “No man or woman is truly innocent, boy. Why do you think those here are being attacked in the first place?”
“Anastasia!” another soldier yelled as he deftly dodged the swinging arms of a Faceless, “Get a move on! We have wounded!”
“I understand,” she responded as she reared her horse to turn the other direction. Before she would leave, her head turned once more to him, “I warn you, boy. If you so much as cast your staff upon those who are judged by the king with the guilt of treason, all of Nohr shall close her doors to you and treat you the very same.”
With that, she slapped the reins of her steed and bolted off toward the field of battle.”Sir, here’s a torch!”
“Good. Burn it.”
The retrieved torch was laid against a wooden pillar nestled on the corner of the house, setting it alight.Naru Keltan

Naru's mind raced at the cavalier's second warning. It was his sworn duty to protect those in need, but... At the cost of being labeled a traitor? He wanted to remain neutral in the war, didn't want to have any part in it, in fact, and that would make it extremely difficult to not be involved... But if he helped heal the Nohrian troops, he could be labeled as a supporter of the war, and the people of this village close their doors to him, if nothing else.
After a short while in thought, staying clear of the battlefield, Naru came to the most logical decision. It would be better to heal any of the Nohrian troops who needed it and have Cheve outcast him, than to heal the villagers and be outcast by the entirety of Nohr. As Naru scanned the town-turned-battlefield for a soldier in need, he quickly saw the burning home that the strange, unearthly woman had entered. His eyes widened at the realization. If the house burned with her inside of it, she'd surely die. He raced toward the flaming building, leaping off his steed and inside to find her...

As the lad would enter the building, he would see the lifeless corpses of three elderly men with ashen skin. The woman stood in the midst of them, with dark tendrils wrapped around a mechanical left arm.
Her hood was removed, revealing half of her face not hidden by her silver hair. Surprisingly, she was not like the matured woman from before, rather she was youthful, with supple, sprightly skin.
Having seen the silhouette of the Ice Tribe fellow in the doorway, her left arm was raised toward him, causing thick, black twine to leap out and wrap around his waist, pulling him close to her.
“Not just anyone would rush into a burning building, boy,” she remarked with a wiggle of her finger, “Tell me, who are you aligning yourself with here?”Naru Keltan

Naru yelped in surprise as the dark tendrils dragged him toward her, but he didn't struggle.
"Y-you're okay! Thank the gods..." He said, sighing in relief. "N-nohr, ma'am. It's my duty to heal people, and one of your cavaliers instructed me not to heal the villagers, or I'd be labeled as a traitor to the kingdom. So I'm healing any of your soldiers that I can." He was surprisingly calm in the face of the rather horrifying magic. He looked at her mechanical arm with curiosity, studying the intricacies of it before turning his attention back to her face.

Her visible brow raised inquisitively at the mention of a cavalier.
Hm... he’s simple-minded to follow the instruction of another complete stranger. Act casual.
“Odd cavalier, then,” she replied as she dragged him with her out of the burning house. Moments after they walked through the doorway, the rooftop came down. “I’m working alone. There are no soldiers with me.”
She released him from her grasp with a little push, “You ought to keep your nose out of other people’s business, boy. Do you even know who I am?”Naru Keltan
