Several frigates make their way across the bitter cold winds, sailing away from the destruction of the port town. The chaos was still fresh on his mind, the dozens of screams, the sight of his fellow Nohrian's cut down in droves. But worst of all, was the dread Kyverian felt when the sky was blackened by a storm of arrows. The last thing he dreamt of was the rain of arrows pouring upon him, unable to find a shield.
"Huh!"
Kyverian gasped as he sprang to life, waking up in cold sweats. There was hardly any comfort in the captain's quarters. No amount of luxury with the surviving commanding officers would make up for what dreams that haunted him. Slowly, Kyverian stirs, moving to swing his legs off the hammock and onto the ground. It felt awful, walking around without his armor. But, he needed some fresh as, as well as to let his wounds heal without the armor and the padding irritating his treatment. The wooden door is softly pushed opened, emerging from out the cabin, grabbing his winter coat and gloves.
On the deck now, the captain felt the wind breeze through his scalp, the shoulder length black hair swept about as he approaches one of the edges of the frigate. The civilians, as well as what soldiers that weren't on night shift, were safely kept below deck. Thankfully, there was enough room for them and the soldiers that survived, as well as food to keep them fed, until they eventually reached a port that would take the refugees. The cold wintry night began to pick up, as the captain clutches the fur closer to his torso. Fila
Fila was not cold. She had waved off the blankets offered; no point in taking a resource she had no need of. She had slept soundly, if nothing else. Though there were nightmares that tormented her, what they had experienced at the village was not the worst.
She was quite aware she had been spared the worst of it though. At several points throughout the night she had had to help comfort stunned soldiers and inconsolable families. She wasn't very good at it, but she did her part. She was technically still on contract; at least that's how she chose to justify such acts of altruism.
Fila leans against the railing, looking out across the sea. Her eyes flick to the side, noting Kyverian emerge from the bowels of the ship. She gives him a polite nod, then gestures for him to come over.

Despite himself being of Nohrian blood, seeing Fila wearing the same set of clothes during the harsh winter had him stare with disbelief. She handled the weather with remarkable amount of very little care for the chilling winds. A fact that makes him jealously squint. But when it came time to speak, the captain sets his momentary amazement aside, so that they could discuss the events that transpired. The Nohr soldiers weren't great sailors, but it was better than burning down with the port town.
"I've already said much back then, but. I have this feeling that we should discuss the finer details..." His back rests against the railing, elbows propped up to support his weight, "What happened to the East wall, Fila? We fought as hard as we could, we tried to hold them off but-" The Kinshi arrow storm came to mind, temporarily breaking his train of thought, eyes averted away before darting back to Fila, "They kept coming. They managed to breach the wall and make a climbable path from the rubble." The haunting shout of several Hoshido Samurai had dazed many Nohrians. Though it wasn't his first encounter with such impressive combatants, it was the first Kyverian's resolve was shaken for however brief the initial strike was.
"Were you at the East wall? Did any survivors come from the East?" There's definite worry in his voice, he hadn't done a headcount of the surviving solders since the meeting with the other chain of command.
Fila had figured Kyverian would want to talk; she hadn't realized how badly he needed to talk. Hearing the words tumble out of his mouth in such an unprofessional manner was truly disconcerting. It was like night and day with the prim, cautious officer she had first met in the wintry middle of nowhere. She let his words wash over her, while she watched his expression with a concerned look of her own.
Not over the situation, but over his worry. It took her a moment to realize why he was worried; perhaps he had known some of them. She had been merely passing through, and intervened for reasons unknown even to her. It did concern her to see him so shaken. This would not be the last time he would have be rattled so, and it honestly surprised her that it was the first. She had to live through many morale-crushing events before even meeting him, albeit compressed into a traumatically short period of time.
She envied him for that, truly. That, and Alisa's company. She couldn't really ask about that at the moment, but maybe later.
"I wouldn't know. It fell while I and a few officers were trying to decide on a course of action. Pity, that." There was a clear note of bitterness in her failure to get the situation in order faster; perhaps the East wall may have held.

There's some bitterness behind the second word, his eyes closed tight as he exhales. Kyverian had survived the harrowing ordeal, but those he knew that were stationed on the East wall were not so lucky. Every now and then, he could still hear it. The sounds of battle that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand with anticipation. Whether it was from the fresh battle memories or from the cold, however, was yet to be vocalized.
"If you're wondering where Alisa was in all that... She was, thankfully, relocated back to Marcarth just days prior to the attack. She has no idea what unfolded here." Of course, Kyverian knew better than to assume Fila and Alisa hadn't bonded, somewhat. But he soon frowns afterwards, once the good news had been said. "But, I had some soldiers who were from Marcarth take her place. Had she not made that request a fort night ago, she could have been among the slain."
But, there was no use in dwelling, eternally, on the past. His eyes do return to Fila, as it became apparent that he did recall her asking about a specific officer. "Though, you mentioned requesting payment, I assume the colonel had brought you your payment? The one with the skull face plates, that is."
Fila looks over at him as he mentions Alisa, clearly interested. There is a certain starry-eyed infatuation in her gaze that seems both out of place and yet more genuine than any expression the swordsman would have seen on her prior. "She was? Good, that's good. Marcarth you say? Do you have any idea where? I'd like to see her." The words come tumbling out, before the mage clicks her shut and looks away, the tip of her ears red with embarrassment. "Ah, but... I'm sure she's busy, assuming she remembers me from one frozen patrol in the middle of nowhere."
She coughs, her fleeting fancy giving way to the somber mood of the conversation. "I'm sorry to hear that. If you have any trouble informing the families, I might have connections in those areas you could use; it comes with my line of work. I would not mind using them for the sake of those who couldn't make it this far."
She nods, revealing a jingling pouch with a flourish before making it seemingly disappear into the palm of her hand with another gesture. Whether magic or sleight of hand, it was hard to say. "I was. I'll count it out once I have some privacy; though I doubt I was short-changed, I have to check. I'm considering asking for more than my usual rates, in light of that mess. Not with anyone on this boat though, it would be rude. There's a few officers I know back in Marcarth who will want every scrap of information about this attack they can get; I'll sell my perspective to one of them I imagine."

The infatuation Fila had was hardly something like that. The captain saw the way that they talked and interacted. When they least expected it, he was certainly aware of the exchange. An exhaled sigh passes by his lips before he speaks. "By the time we reach Marcarth, I'm certain Alisa will be just as worried for you as are for her. It will be a while, but... Should not take us any more than half a day and some hours of travel." Though, the talk of the connections Fila had was certainly going to be of use.
"We should settle in Marcarth, first and foremost. Next, we acquire a name and headcount. After which, I'll hand you a copy of the names and information so you can see who lived and who died. Not everyone will be greeting us at the port, anyway." But Kyverian was certain that the curiosity of others was bound to draw attention. But, as usual, his mood shifts, upon the mention of further pay. "You're welcome to take it up with the colonel in the morning. But as of right now? It'd be best if you did not." Although Fila's help was appreciated, there was no telling how the mages of the recently establish survivor's oligarchy would take to the idea of paying out more than Fila's usual rates.
"We've all lost... Something. Some, more than others. You should most likely just wait until we reach safety to ask about it. But, I'd still pay you with my own coin, should you use your connection network to help me find the deceased's relatives."
Fila waves off Kyverian's concerns. "Worry not. I won;t be troubling anyone on this boat for my payment. The soldiers here need time to grieve and cope, not a mercenary clawing at their pockets. My arrangement is with unrelated individuals with too much time and blood on their hands. Not the nicest sorts, but they pay well."
Fila looks over at him curiosly as he mentions paying with his coin. "Hmm? Oh no Kyverian. You won't be paying in coin. I wouldn't ask that from you. For one thing, you can give me something much better; respect." She looks back out over the sea, waiting a moment before continuing. "Military contracts are easy to come by with the war. Military contracts that one has a chance of surviving? Much harder. All I need is for you to nudge the people doing the hiring when you get the chance. Its not like you're being dishonest; you know that I can help. And you will get the chance to influence people, believe me. I think you'll go far, with or without my help."

Despite her profession, Fila was certainly a cut above the usual he had worked with. Badgering their Nohrian employer for pay, regardless of how dire the situation was. Swapping sides for a better pay, unafraid to throw their lot in with the highest bidder. A lack of loyalty, empathy, and respect for those they took the job with. But, none of that was found in Fila, his gaze caught blank in his amazement. Finally, he smiles. It wasn't a great smile, but at least Fila could tell that she had impressed him.
"Respect you want? Respect you'll have." His arms are uncrossed, no longer leaning upon the railing of the frigate as he extends his right hand outwards to Fila. "You've earned it, two times over by now. You've been of aid against that ambush and you've been of aid when the people of Nohr were assaulted." But soon enough, the talk of his future going far brings his attention back to the mercenary, shaking his head to dispel such a thought. "Hm. Already making connections to the top in the future, I see..." Briefly his eyelids droop, his smile still upon his face before he eventually returns back to the railing.
Fila seems pleasantly surprised by his smile. She shakes his hand, cheerfulness and pride in herself briefly cracking the professional mask.
"I... Thank you, Kyverian. I don't believe anyone has ever said that to me." She gives a warm smile. It was nice to be appreciated. That was really all she had ever wanted, was to be respected on her own terms. Friends like Kyverian were the key to that, and she was happy to see her efforts and rare moments of altruism pay off.
"And I, you. I'll help you find those families once we get back to port." She might not even charge for it. Might.

There was not much else to say, at this point. The two were in good company, the frigid winds that assaulted the wooden sides with bitter intent were all that filled the silence. A mage, as well as a mercenary, had been considered a friend. Not once, had Kyverian ever considered that a possibility in Nohr's society. But now, it was happening. It was a bond he'd certainly cherish, given his smile and positive mood. Sure enough, a soldier on watch comes to fetch the captain, as another meeting was requested.
"I will be right there. Do be well, Fila. We shall meet again."
Off Kyverian goes, following behind the soldier before he disappears behind the captain's quarters door. Another meeting, another discussion of minds, one that would be repeated in the travel to Marcarth. For now, the survivors hold onto their lives dearly, having escaped certain death. The soldiers and mages of Nohr that survived eventually mourn their losses. But more importantly, they hold the bonds made in the heat of battle far more dearly than they did before.
