The Finest of Deals Artimus Oak and the Madame of the Wyvern’s Rest Marcarth Marketplace, then the Wyvern’s Rest Afternoon
“I am sorry, Vinny, but this is really getting on my nerves.” “Oh, come now, Madame! It wasn’t my fault that the wine bottles were empty! Those men you sent with me could have been double agents!” “Double agents. Argil and Vern, double agents?” “Yes! Yes, double agents!” “What the heck is this old guy babbling about?! We’re not double agents!” “Whoa, but think about it Argil! That would be pretty neat.” “ONLY THAT I WANT TO GET PAID, NUMBSKULL! You don’t seriously believe this old guy, do you, Madame?! “The Madame knows I am a man of my word, you bottle-sucking punk!” “Be quiet.” “...” “...” “...” “I had purchased those crates for the sole purpose of treating mercenaries of taste. We are now short on wine, yet the smell of it PERMEATES my office, and if there are any LIARS in this room, it would be you, Vincent! Your breath absolutely REEKS of Cheredonne Blanc!” “Oh... ah... th-that can’t be...” “Do not lie to me twice! I will give you a second chance at this. You have exactly a week to get me a new shipment of Cheredonne Blanc, or our business contract is underwater! Do you comprehend, sir?” “A... a... absolutely...” “Argil, Vern, you will not go with him. I wouldn’t want your reputations to be sullied any more than it has.” “Y-Yes, Madame!” “Thank you for understanding!” “Good. Now get out of my office.” “B... but Madame... what about my protection...?” ”You will find it yourself.” “H... hyeeee!”
Five days later...
The short, stubby man of rounder quality, Vincent Hamilton, rode anxiously down the road back to Marcarth upon a burdened mule. A small wagon of goods trailed behind them, presumably of the coveted Cheredonne Blanc that was requested by an angry proprietor. To his grief, he found no hands willing to accompany him to and from a wine house. After all, he did attempt to sully the name of two well-thought-of mercenaries. Why would anyone else want to roll with a man like him?
“It wasn’t my fault that the wine tasted so well...” he grumbled to himself, “Damn those boys and their unwavering integrity... if only they were a little stupider...”
That spoken, the gates of Marcarth came in sight, lending the merchant a sense of relief. Fate was kinder to him in getting this far. Now, just a stroll through the bustling marketplace, and everything will be swell...

Well... It was nearing the end of the week, and what did Art have right now? Nothing... Not even a copper coin to pay for a cheap inn, this week had been rather busy with the guards and noble families visiting. So he had little to no chance to swipe something, and employers had been too scared to recruit him to steal from another. Simply because they didn't want to risk the man's capture, and then seeing the young man get paid off to tell whom had hired him. He had a reputation around this part, as the for-hire merc.
It was actually pretty accurate to a degree, because he was always for hire, whether it was for the guardsmen, the merchants, or just some shady fellow that wanted something back from an owed debt. But, each one knew the risk of hiring Artimus, if the other party could offer a higher value or stake to the young man. He would easily switch over for the right amount. It was perhaps what made using Artimus a double edge sword for the rather plentiful employers around here, that's why his pay had been generous up until this point, if he had been smart he'd of saved some money.
Mostly because of the fancy living he had decided to partake in, had left him without even a small penny or pension left in his name. Perhaps he would learn to cut down in the long run, lest he ends up broke like a beggar again. That's when a sight from the heavens most of landed in front of him. There was a single cart, without a single guard around it approaching the front gates... What type of madman would be traveling into Macarath without even a single mercenary or guard? Well that didn't matter in the slightest, reaching up, Art pulled down a small cloaked hood, and began following the carriage through the back alleys, keeping out of sight of the main streets, lest he gave away his position of following such an easy target.

At this point, Vincent had relaxed, knowing that it would be impossible for anyone to simply rob him in broad daylight. Such a thing is suicide with the city guard about! They’d cut off the hands of thieves without a second thought! At least, that’s what his comfortable thought was.
Unfortunately, his destination was quite literally at the other side of the city where he was coming from. The southern district of Marcarth was often the busiest, and probably the most difficult to get through with the crowds about at this time of day. It was so that there was almost no space to maneuver, with bodies nearly rubbing against the cart and the mule.
“Make way, would you!” the merchant grunted, yet his words went unheeded. He was no king that they should listen to him.
Yet, his eyes darted to the side. There was an empty alley right there, about the right size for his mule and cart to get through.
“I have time,” he huffed, “It’s not as if she needs it now...” Thus, he proceeded, turning into the alley with little care of who he got in the way of. True to what he wished, there was nary a soul about to hinder his progress. “Haha!” he exclaimed with his fist in the air, “Now get going, you stupid mule!”
Contrarily, the donkey had completely stopped moving after entering the alley.
“What are you standing around for?!” the merchant hissed, he slapped the reins fumingly, “You foolish ass! GO! There’s nothing in front of you! Aaargh!”

Things were playing a little too well for the young man, he was biding his time waiting for the man to become impatient and to attempt to take a detour. And by god it had worked, because the moment that the man was fed up with the tireless trek through the crowded streets, he turned off into the empty alleyway. A perfect opportunity for thieves and the like to appear from behind the shadows, and well... What did you expect Art to do? As the horse came to an abrupt halt, probably sensing something was wrong, as most animals had keener senses then humans.
Artimus stepped out from seemingly nowhere, his cloak allowing him to blend into the dark shadows of the alleyway, it seemed like he had manifested out of the darkness in front of the merchant... You'd of thought that he was a magician or some type of magical being... There was plenty of light around, but this giant figure in front had appeared out of the smallest of areas. Reaching down to his hip, Artimus began to draw a blade from its scabbard, the metal glinting in the daylight, sure it'd give some attraction to those paying attention.
But on a busy day like this, a shining glimmer would easily be dismissed as a sparkle of jewelry, especially with the noblemen and women around. A deep husk like voice, that sounded like it came from a barrel shook the air around him ever so slightly. "Well now, here I was expecting to go without a penny this week... I'm glad you decided to stumble into my territory..." A white toothy grin could be seen underneath the hood, as the cloak parted slightly, the Merchant could tell from size alone, Artimus wasn't a pushover, standing at a decent height of six feet and three inches.

The sudden appearance of this man caught Vinny totally off guard. A pathetic yelp escaped the merchant’s lips as he fell off of his donkey from shock. Having lost his nerve before this large man, the merchant prostrated himself before the thief.
“P-p-please, sir! I’m just a lowly merchant trying to deliver g-g-goods!” he pleaded with both his hands clamped together. However, the merchant’s expression changed after having realized a devious plan. “W... wait a moment! I have a proposal for you!“ He held his hands out to the thief, “Would you hear me out? There’s gold in it for you if you do!” art

The merchant seemed to just break before him in less than a second. It slightly confused the man, as well most of the merchants in this city, would deem it necessary to protect their cargo before their own lives. However, this slightly rounded man was begging for his life, instead of the goods. Perhaps he had stumbled into someone that he shouldn't? However, curiosity peeked his interest, when the man spoke about a profit for the young thief. Keeping a rather calm complexion regardless of how much he wished to smile at such an act, he'd place his swords point down towards the man's head.
His eyes staring a hole in the top of the merchants head. "You've got yourself five seconds to tell me what this offer of yours is, or I'll start gutting you like a jerky baked fish..." He said remembering how a fish was gutted brutally while it was still alive and flopping, that way it turned to jerky rather quickly, as the flesh still retained most of its blood. A rather gruesome way to die if you asked him... After all, this was a cutthroat world that they lived in, gotta make a living somehow.
And the fewer people to report his name, the better... If he kept letting people go after robbing him, his description would soon be traveling across the entire globe and wanted posters would be put up... But truth be told, Artimus never did kill anyone, he always staged their deaths and told them to run away and never to appear again... Money was money after all, and sometimes he'd manage to get double payment out of some odd jobs he had done.

“Oh-oh-alright, okay, easy now!” Vincent stammered, he backed himself up onto his cart, “400 gold! That is 400 gold for the life of an evil individual! She is an absolute tyrant, working me to the bone like a slave on a field!” This he had spoken with a mournful tone, “She threatened me that if I did not get her shipment to her soon, she’d slit my hands and feet and make me crawl home back to Windmire! I am just a lowly merchant trying to make ends meet for his family!” He ended his request with a slobbering sob and curled up his body like a snail shell.

Artimus stopped as soon as the man backed up ever so slightly, his eyes glued onto him for a moment, speaking about how he was being threatened by an evil individual cloaking themselves as some parading around as a merchant... Taking into consideration the way the man had spoken, and then curling up into a ball, talking about a family made the young man cringe. It was an absolutely disgusting sight in front of him. "Alright alright, as long as you stop that god awful crying, cause you look more like a pig than a human at that point." He said not mincing his words.
Thinking for a moment he put his sword away. "Very well, I'll help you with this, she's expecting a shipment correct? Well, I'll sit in the back of the cart... Do pray tell, what exactly it is, that you have in the back of this wagon so that I know what exactly we're delivering to this so-called tyrant of yours?" He said with a sort of flat tone as if he didn't really believe the man about his so-called tyrant of a boss if the man was lying, he could easily dispose of him without anyone noticing.

The merchant raised his head, his eyes glistening with delight, “Really! There’s a shipment of fine wine in the back, her absolute favorite kind of wine. She wants all of this to herself, I tell you!” He hobbled toward the back of the cart and lifted a cloth that concealed the cargo, “Look, I’ll put some of the wine aside, then you can fit in, snug as a bug! I’ll invite her outside to see the shipment, then you reach out and get her!” He immediately start grabbing crates of the wine, setting them aside on the wall. There was no care of whether or not they would be stolen, but the very idea that his employer would get a taste of her own medicine filled him with glee.
Eventually, six crates were removed, and in their place enough space in the cart for the thief to squeeze in.
“There we go, sir,” he said with a nod, “Get in, and I’ll cover you with the cloth!” art

Watching the man go to work for a moment, all Artimus could do was watch how he didn't even hesitate at the mans suggestion, but yet seemed to brighten up at the fact that he had gotten someone to actually take on this so-called employer for him, however there was still a suspicion that seemed to hang around Art as he shook his head side to side, once the man had finished clearing out some of the wine boxes. It was a good idea, but he wasn't exactly the dumbest man when it came down to infiltrations and the like.
"No that won't do, we're going to be spotted if your merchant friend has some dogs." Walking over towards the wine bottles, he picked one of them up and walking towards the small cargo, opened it and poured it out on the wagon underneath where he was laying, and looking over at the merchant he smiled ever so slightly. "Now, this may seem weird to you, but you'll understand if you want me to get in without being found out, I'm going to lay down here, I want you to pour the wine on me as I lay down... That way it covers up my scent from potential hounds." He said crawling into the puddle of wine that he had already created.
Fitting in perfectly he pointed at the boxes of wine. "Also hand me some of those bottles, so that I can place a few on the lower parts of my body, so it actually looks like wine underneath the cloth instead of a body. That way we still have a regal appearance of looking like it's still full supply. Then finally drink a few of the wine, so when the smell hits the dogs, it wouldn't be under suspicion and they can clearly smell your breath, leading them to believe that you're the one responsible for opening the bottles." He said laying as still as possible in the cargo area.

“Ah, yes, good, good!” the merchant nodded profusely, “I like that plan. Sound plan, sir! You would be doing the world a favor as we get this whole thing underway!”
As recommended by the thief, a few bottles were opened, some drank, some spilled over. Eventually, the whole cart stank of the alcohol, and the thief was concealed by the presence of bottles placed carefully around his person.
That said, Vincent allowed himself to indulge, convinced of the effectiveness of the plan, as well as celebrating his cleverness. Soon, he would be rid of an irritating thorn in his side, and what better sting in the wound than using her own product against her?
“Hic! It will only be a short while, sir!” said Vincent as he hopped onto the back of the donkey, “We-hic-aren’t a far off!” He slapped the reins once again, and much to his delight, the mule began to move once again.
The trek was a short one, as the alley led them down to a connecting street next to the inn. Another street was crossed, and the little cart eventually made it to another back alley where the destination was located.
The thief would be able to see it through the fibers of the cloth over him. It was not at all a humble establishment, and it reflected fully the artful appearance of the city. A sign passed above the cart with the title of “Wyvern’s Rest,” and after a few moments, they stopped beneath a type of gothic arch stretching between the roofs.
“Hic! Stay there a moment, sir,” Vincent whispered as he alighted his mule, “I will call her out here... be ready to pounce...”
With that, he proceeded to move into the back end of the building.
In a little while, the thief would hear the sound of two pairs of footsteps, on that was unmistakably female, and the other, of course, Vincent.
“Sigh... at least there’s still something here,” said a deep, lovely voice. Her footsteps approached the side of the cart.
“Of course, of course... I couldn’t help myself to some-hic-wine. It really is quite-hic-delicious.” “Noted.” “Would you like to inspect the cargo, Madame?” “...”
There was a pause.
“... Madame? Is, uh... is something the matter?” “... For all it’s worth, Vincent... I am very sorry for what I said to you last week. I should’ve been a little more gracious.” “... Ah, oh... w-well... no offense taken, Madame! Absolutely none!” “Look, I wanted to make it up to you at some point. Help you get more out of your trade. I’m sure there’s plenty more avenues where you can expand yourself from this little cart.” “Er... uh... well, I... I appreciate that, Madame. Er...” “Right, I should take inventory. Business, business, business.”
At that moment, the silhouette of the woman appeared toward the rear of the cart, her hands gently taking hold of the cloth covering it. art

The ride had been a very uncomfortable one at that, but with the ministrations of his driver, telling him that they had almost reached their targeted destination, it came to a small relief for the young man. But with the man's constant talking, it was almost as if he was trying to put him to sleep, all it managed to do was simply egg him on more. To the point that his adrenaline was pumping like a madman, Artimus was sure if the coach didn't hurry up, he'd be like a fully loaded jack in the box by the time this was over.
It felt like an eternity had passed, as he laid there in the uncomfortable smelling wine, it would probably take hours to get this smell off of him, or hell it might even take days, one could only scrub so much, and he was basically becoming infused with the substance, that's when the cart came to a stop, the inebriated man told him to hold on, while he went and fetched the woman that was apparently the owner of all of this stuff. At first, it was dead silent with just him and the horse, after a few minutes however footsteps could be heard.
The adrenaline in his body began to pump and his muscle began to twinge and bend ever so slightly, unhilting his sword from his side and placing it in a fairly comfortable position so that he could easily spring out when the cloth began to be raised. However, as he lied there, the intoxicated man was talking to a woman that had a rather deep, yet pleasing voice to her, as if she had been around for a while. Her manner of speaking was polite, as well as a regal sound to it. Almost as if she was nobility herself.
The conversation between the two seemed to be rather important, as she was apologizing of all things to the overweighted man. If only she had known what he had hired and kept a secret from her underneath the cloth. Just as she began pulling the cloth, however, he would use the combination of factors, his skill and speed with his sword would lash out, as he attempted to tackle the woman to the ground. If successful he would pin her down with his sword to her throat, all of which was all practiced with perfection.
If he wasn't successful and she was able to get away from such a surprised trap, he would use the moment to distance himself from the young woman, and stand his ground, with the cloak covering his face and hair... It wouldn't be good to let someone see you after all. Though it would be moot in the case that he had successfully pinned her down underneath him, with a blade to her throat, she'd get a good look at his face, perhaps every last detail, since well... They'd be in such close proximity to onlookers it'd look almost as if he had kissed her.

The moment the cloth had been lifted, the woman’s eyes widened in surprise. There was a man under here, poised like a serpent for the kill.
He had moved to strike her by surprise? Not this old maid!
The spare moment his blade appeared to her neck, she flung her arms around him and linked them tightly around his waist. While it was that his blade pressed against her, she had him in her tight vice-grip.
“Hmph!” she huffed as she glanced to his face, “Well, now! This is a fine predicament. You may slide your blade against my neck, but I will still have the strength and adrenaline to crush your chest and render you to a painful, agonizing death!” Her eyes appeared to flash as her dress shifted to an icy white color, “What’ll it be, darling?” art

It was like a double edge sword, yeah he had caught her off guard, but at the same time, she had enough sense to grab ahold of him, most would freak out and just fall backward. But as they stumbled to the ground, she had gripped around him like a snake, with the intentions of crushing him where he stood. A small grimace crossed his face as the sudden strength the woman seemed to possess, it was almost as if he had tackled a demon, his blade still in place between them. A small smile on his face as he looked at hers.
She wasn't bad for an older woman, she still had a youthful appearance, even if her outfit seemed to be slightly outdated in the newer style of dresses women choose to wear in these days. Her words were those of a fighter, talking about how he could easily slide his blade along her neck, but at the same time, she could crush him... True it'd be a slow agonizing death, but at the same time, there was a small chance she could bleed out before he cut. A risk he wasn't willing to take after all, but he wasn't about to just back down either.
"Well now, you're an interesting one... You didn't freak out and just crumple to the ground... do you always hold your assassins so passionately like this? It's almost as if you don't want me to go like a long-lost relative or lover." He said with a bit of smartass tone, it was almost like he was being a tease in this situation, even though it could go sour for both of them. He noticed the small flash of her eyes, and the dress underneath changing a different color, an icy aura began to appear around her.
"Well now, if I didn't know any better, I'd say I just tangled with an ice mage... From the ice tribe." Of course, he didn't know what she truly was, but to be able to use ice so freely, was the only thing in this world he could think of at this moment... After all, growing up in Nohr it was almost common by now for the ice tribe to be moving around the countryside. After their deals with the king. Her grip seemed to tighten with the shift. "Careful now, don't squeeze too hard or we might have some bodily fluids on us." He said with a smirk.

“Oh, pooh-pooh, you country bumpkin,” the woman grunted, “At this point, even if you tried, nothing would work against me.”
“M-M-Madame, please...” the merchant stammered, “W-we could settle this without any unnecessary losses, can’t we?”
“Oh, Vincent?” she huffed, “Don’t tell me you put him up to this!”
“I... er... haaaaaa... I did. I did hire him...”
With a grunt, the Madame bent herself back and tossed the would-be assassin back into the cart and allowed him to sort himself out. She turned her body to Vincent, a cross expression on her face.
“Goodness gracious, and just as I was apologizing, too!” she sighed with a shake of her head, “I really can’t give you the benefit of a doubt anymore, can I?”
“Please, Madame!” Vincent exclaimed as he threw himself at her feet, “I am sorely sorry for what I’ve done! Please forgive meee!”
The woman rolled her eyes, then glanced in the direction of the assassin. art
