Sometimes there were times when it came to be impossible to deny mankind's sense of structure and their own ingenuity when it came to their constructs. Tsukime had found herself wandering the countless roads and pathways of Kitsuki's districts, the cloak hiding her features covered in the dust of crawling through certain spaces. She garnered a few eyes of the occasional passerby, avoiding the busier streets with a calculated precision. The tail hidden under the cloak tightened around her waistline the moment the sound of something alive sounded to her pressed down ears. Cautiously, casually, keep calm. It was simple enough to fit in here, her main goal still perfectly accessible due to the day. Aside from the merchants and foreigners she blended herself in with, she came to this populated town not for the merchandise but for its infamous schools. The constant sightings of samurai only spurring her further as she rounded another corner.
Quite honestly, she hadn't the faintest clue as to what she ought to be searching for in specifics. She didn't need tools, never used them, not even fruit knives. But their practiced movements, as what she'd seen; were enough to call forth attention. Her attention in particular. So she kept her nose sharp for the scent of wooden swords, the thick stench of sweat, produce, iron, and everything else getting in the way more than she'd like. It stank something fierce, far too lively for a country girl like herself. But she would persevere! Rounding yet another corner out of what looked to have been a residential area, the fox followed a long wall until she came upon her target. Honestly she couldn't read the messy signboard, figuring it her target from the yelling within and the sounds of smacking bamboo. That had to be it! One of the infamous warrior schools! Or at least she hoped so... She shook the thoughts from her mind, looking to both sides of the road before dashing off further down the wall.
Once more she looked for an unneeded eye, when she spotted none there was a satisfied smirk to her angelic little face. With practiced agility it took very little effort for the fox to scramble up and over the corner wall, landing in a rather lush garden. Perfect to hide herself in. Her grin widened as she continued forth, slipping past the greenery like a proper little fox. Oh how her brothers would be so proud...
It started when Shizuka faced her opponent and the two of them bowed to one another. Her wooden staff was twirled around her body a couple of times before she held it out in front of her in an attack position. Already she was in the offense. The staff was much longer than her opponent's sword. And with the start of the battled Shizuka lashed out with her makeshift spear only for it to be blocked by the swordsman from the dojo. The swordsman moved fast towards Shizuka and went for a fast cut to her body. She only narrowly dodged the attack. The girl bit her lip and charged after her opponent once again. This time a high attack. The wooden staff collided with the bamboo sword with a loud 'crack'. She drew back again and spun her pole around for a low attack with the end of her spear. Which was, once again, blocked by her opponent.
The girl gave a grow out of frustration. "Come on," she cried out. Shizuka ducked down quickly to avoid a hit to her head. A low sweep to her ankle brought Shizuka's leg up in the air. And another swipe was to the head. Shizuka quickly raised the staff and blocked the attack. With as much force as she could give, she pulled the bamboo staff onto the ground. It left her opponent wide open. She stabbed at the ankle. She couldn't make contact. The swordsman was faster. Her weapon was trapped, and with a sickening snap the wooden pole had cracked into two. The pieces went flying across the courtyard. She had lost her balance. Shizuka tumbled and rolled, her face just inches from the garden.
"You almost messed up Master's garden," her opponent sneered. "You always were a clutz."
Shizuka balled up her fists and got onto her hands an knees. A look of defeat crossed her eyes. For a moment she looked utterly lost. Half of her pole was still clutched tightly in her hands. She shook her head and her world turned back to normal. The warrior rolled onto her back and started to laugh. "Man, I was so close to beating you that time. If my staff wouldn't have broke well, I totally would have won." She held the splintered wood in her hands. Shizuka dusted her clothes off and held the broken stick in the air. "Do you know where it went?"
Her opponent simply pointed to the garden with a shrug and turned away.
Sneaking through the garden proved simple enough, the dark green of her cloak blending her in with the mini areas of growth. The scent of a pond was overtaken by the scent of man, a good sign even if it did make her wrinkle her nose. The sounds of clashing wood caused her ears to swivel from their place, effectively knocking her hood down to reveal the white triangles. They wiggled, fully perked; against the sounds, turning as the sounds grew more intense. As she drew past a miniature forest of bamboo, the fox peered out from the shadows; eyeing the figures revealed from what she assumed was the training hall. They were really going at it... A frown formed on her lips. They reminded her of her brothers, their rough-housing that looked about ready to destroy the structure.
'No! Don't get distracted by those feeble things now Tsukime!' The girl violently shook her head, trying to physically rid herself of her memories. Satisfied with her plan, and a slight bit lightheaded from it; the Kitsune steeled her resolve. She waited, squinting for a better view. When that proved more difficult than she thought possible, the next plan was sorted into mind. Double-armoring her resolve, adding fuel to that fire in her belly; Tsukime rushed her hood back over head and waited once more. This time for an opening. The sounds of cracking wood, taking in their movements... It was difficult to find an opening in for the dash under the school. The heightened boards proving the only safe and reliable place for her sneak around in and observe.
Her opportunity appeared as things looked to take a turn for one of the students. Taking that as a queue, the girl bunched the muscles in her legs; ready for a full sprint. She was only half out of the bamboo when a sudden flying came at her. Not paying attention to the unidentified flying object, focused purely on that slight opening for the rise; the contact was a shock her mind didn't register until after her body forced out a surprised squeak for her. An sharp bark of a sound really, perfect for a monster fox or any fox really; but a revealing one. Not that her surprise was the first thing to come to mind after jolting herself backward into the mini-forest again. Oh no, the shock was the first to appear. Dumbfounded and dazed, not realizing that she was staring at the sky until after her hands registered the dirt beneath her.
Panic started up then. In a moment the girl's heart was pounding into her ears, already her body rolling over to flee. Or at least that's what she intended until she felt a sharp pain run throughout her right leg, her ankle throbbing something fierce. Of course she tried to force it, only finding that impossible when the appendage went numb with the effort; forcing her back to the ground. "Just. Great." Tsukime growled softly to herself, forcing the long hem of her cloak aside to see. The pale skin was already beginning to redden, the pain increasing with the quick swelling of a twisted ankle. Oh now that really was just wonderful. At that point she only wanted to get away, perfectly happy with dragging her sorry self away from the scene of the crime; hoping that the student was slower than her turtle pace. Or just not coming for their broken piece of whatever...
Alone once again. Shizuka's face shifted into a frown. Her classmate had to have cheated somehow. That or she purposely gave her a weakened staff to use to practice with. Had she been using her real naginata at that point that samuari would have been torn to shreds. It was much different when a warrior held the weight of a real weapon. And imagine if Ume were here to help as well. Her classmate would have fled at the sight of Shizuka on her pegasus for sure. Fantasies continued to run through Shizuka's mind. She would be really great one day. Already she was part of Hoshido's forces. Her strength would only grow and one day, yes she could feel it in her heart, one day she would become a retainer to a member of the royal family.
Shizuka spent her life with her head in the clouds. It took a noise from the garden to pull her mind out of it. The noise was low like a whisper that had been carried to the young warrior in the wind. A growl. It wasn't unusual for animals to find their way into the garden. Shizuka looked back at the school and then to the broken pole in her hands. Had she gone in without retrieving the broken half of the weapon she would surely hear it from the master, not to mention be ridiculed by the other students once again. The splintered end had created a small point near the end of her staff.
The bamboo grove groaned when the girl made her way into it. Her movements were cautious. If there was an animal here, Shizuka didn't want it to sneak up on her. And who knows? Maybe it was a tanuki. Her eyes practically glistened at the thought of finding a mythical creature and the riches he could provide to her. She could get a new weapon for herself and some horse armor for Ume.
The girl almost tripped once again. Her foot colliding with the broken half of her staff. "I got it!" When she bent down to pick it up, her eyes trailed upon something else. There were marks in the ground. Strange. They sweeped the dirt like something had been dragged away. Shizuka lifted the broken piece into her hands. The two sticks were held before her as she crept, following the marks in the dirt. She didn't have to follow them for long.
The body was the last thing she thought she would find. She stumbled back but recovered quickly enough to run forward to the figure's aid. Shizuka knealt before the person. "Are you alright!? Did the tanuki get you?" her voice had been anything but calm. There was no sign of blood, at least none that Shizuka could see. It could have been covered by the cloak this person wore.
The Kitsune didn't need to be wary for her ears to pick up the heavy sounds of footsteps. Whoever had sniped her with that piece of whatever, they were coming for it and fast. A little too fast for her tastes, the heavy thuds sounding more like trudging than walking. Instinctively the fox pinned her ears against her head under that hood, hidden rules within her biological system telling her how to 'become smaller'. As if that were possible. The only thing she could possible have done was crawl until she was home free- or at least far enough away for whatever that was behind her to take no interest. That gave her the energy to speed up for sure, Tsukime using her hands now to claw at the ground for traction. Goodbye clean claws.
Not that anything she did would have saved her as it was found quite evidently. Mid-purchase between dragging herself, the voice she'd ignored suddenly sounded from behind at an extremely much louder volume. Was she worried? Of course. More for the fact that there was nothing but dirt, grass, and nothing but regrets on that once clean cloak. Yes, priorities. Her appearance to be awe-inspiring trumped her original goal of seeing without getting caught. But it was the question that got her. The worry was expected, the culprit on the other hand... "What? Tanuki?" The fox grumbled loudly, with unhidden confusion. What Tanuki? Did raccoon dogs suddenly learn how to throw sticks at five-hundred knots per second now?
Didn't matter. Tsukime stopped in her attempts at a getaway, mind buzzing with a plan; blue eyes peaking out from her hood to look up at the figure kneeling beside her. Female, blond... human. It took an ounce of control to keep her face from twisting into a groan, placing a mask of innocence and confusion there instead. "Oh please help me! I didn't know what it was chasing me and suddenly a flying object came at me! I thought they had me, those wicked Tanuki!" The fox played at, her voice wholly using that convincing, pleading ability she'd practiced on for ages. Needed to be convincing after all. Might as well use the human's imagination, not that she thought with how panicked she sounded that her act was going to be seen through in an instant.
Shizuka could almost blush at the woman's statement. Her pole had snapped, broken and flew off in this woman's direction. It must have collided with her. The woman felt the embarassment well up inside her until that final moment where she had finally been saved. This woman thought that the tanuki threw the stick at her. Shizuka clenched her fist and inwardly cheered a little bit at that. It meant that she was in the clear. As long as she didn't say anything, this woman would belive that a tanuki attacked her. "You're lucky that's all he did to you. I hear that those tanuki are vicious creatures sometimes. Man, getting hit by a stick. I say you got off easy with that one."
The woman smiled and offered her hand to the other, not quite registering that she wasn't quite alright. What Shizuka did see was how this could be her chance. It gave her that moment where she could be somebody's hero. "I'll save you civilian. Shizuka Yui of the Hoshido royal army at your service." She always had a sense of pride introducing herself that way. It made her feel ten times more important than she actually ever would be. "If you stick with me, I'll be sure to keep all those tanuki away."
