It was the dead of night when they attacked. Fila had been hired to assist a Nohrian raiding party into attacking the village. While the village itself wasn't a particularly significant location, it was in a position to send runners out to one of the larger Hoshidian settlements. A much larger invasion force was planned to use this route, so a preliminary raiding party was sent to eliminate it. Fila was nearby when they were assembling, and had been hired last minute for more gold then she usually got paid for this kind of operation.
In the dead of midnight, the main force stalked to the edge of the woods surrounding the village. The Dark Mage with the group sent a blast of fire at the village watch tower, igniting it. Not only did this distract the villages, but it also served as a signal. Fila was not with the main force. She had been assigned to assist two of the mages to act as a flanking force for this operation. She felt slightly bad; these were basically innocent people. But, a job was a job, and she would eat well tonight if all went as planned.
Of course, as a certain fellow Ice Tribe member was about to insure, things rarely went according to plan.
NOTE: The main force of Nohrian Soldiers and one Dark Mage are attacking the village head on, while Fila and the other two mages are are flanking them.

Raziel was sleep. Several miles behind, in what was left of Mai's inn. And though he tried, through he forced his eyes shut, Ethan Leigh couldn't sleep. Yet, blind hours passed with the same empty feeling held by lonely months. He sat up, failure stinging each breath, and watched his sole companion sleep. The hulking manakete hadn't said much since Mia's abduction. That's what it was. That's what it had to be. With a sigh, Ethan sought answers in the warm Hoshidan night.
That had been hours ago and he wondered if Raziel was still even asleep. It didn't matter. Aching steps broke each thought. He'd need new shoes soon. Well, he needed money first. A rough hill guided him towards the quiet town. Its buildings kept little light, letting Ethan pass through inky roads. The villagers around paid him little mind. Just as well. He wasn't staying. He never did. The sky exploded.
Its deep, echoing boom giving way to fire's greedy crackle. Sound traced the explosion to some watchtower he hadn't even noticed. Shouting voices. Cries of the frightened. Ethan's mind returned.Instinct drew his blade as he raced for the beacon. Jostling metal and frantic orders told him that he was being followed, but their panic sounded friendly. He couldn't escape it. The war. Even miles from conflict, and several midnight's later, he couldn't escape it. His grip tightened around the sword's familiar grip.

A wave of nohrian soldiers rushes into the village, each tossing a torch before charging with their spears to meet Ethan and the village militia. Bringing up their rear is a fearsome dark mage, who hurls a bolt of fire over to ranks to impact into one of the soldiers at Ethan's side.
Meanwhile, stepping over to quietly killed corpses of a few inconveniently placed villages, Fila's raiding party creeps around. They rely on the fire-blindness of the village defenders, and once rough battle lines have formed, each of the three mages hurls a blast of magic into the unprotected backs of the Hoshidian forces.

Ethan's scream, near inhuman. He charged towards the soldiers ahead of him, eager for twisted vengeance. Each of these men, a surrogate for the ones tormenting his home. The ones that locked him in a cell. His sword pulled back, yet a wave of burning pain tossed him aside. Rough stone scraped across his shoulder until Ethan rolled onto his stomach. He glanced up, vibrant strands of blue cutting his vision into slivers. His sword? A sword, sat inches in front of him. Another flaming ball flew passed him. Its crash melted into fiendish shrieks.
Ethan drug himself to the sword and jumped to his feet. The mage whipped his direction and launched another blast towards him. Two steps to the side and its flaming hate singed passed him. Before the wanderer could slice the intruder, heavy steps caught his right. Ethan lifted his blade, letting the soldier's spear slide down his steel. A swift kick to the ankle threw the attacker off balance as Ethan yanked the knife from his belt. He stabbed the man through his gut as another blast came for them. Ethan turned the soldier for cover and was knocked to his back by the scent of charring skin. He rolled the body off him and scrambled to his feet. The mage turned, splitting down an alley.
"After him!" He yelled, catching the attention of three soldiers.
The four sped for the man, dodging hurled fire and faulty diversions until there was no escape. The mage cowered against the wall, holding his hand up.
"Stay back." He stammered. "I warn you. Stay back."
Ethan dashed and a final blat range out. He slid beneath it, rising with his sword. Vengeful steel cut across the man's chest. Pages fell with his blood. The three soldiers guarding the alley behind him screamed as bright oranges ended their lives. Ethan turned around, ready for his next victim. Hate softened. The sword slid from a weaker grip until he caught himself.
"Fila?" He asked.

The fire tome almost slips from between her numb fingertips. Her name. No, not her name. He knew her. Not as a mercenary, that reaction was different. He knew her. What she was at her core, her past, before it all went wrong. Who she'd wanted to be. But who? Who, who, who? No one should be out here, no one...
Calm. Focus. Look at his face, you need find out who he is. He cut a bloody swath through your allies, you can't fight this one, so you need to talk your way out. Focus, focus. Who is he? Ah... He's-
"Ethan?" The mages voice is disbelieving, embers winking in and out as the village goes up in a blaze. A flaming background between two wanderers from the icy wastes. Ironic. "What are you doing out here?!" She demands. She sounds angry, disbelieving. As if exasperation is the only refuge from going mad. "And since when could you do... all that?! What happened?!" it sounds like she should've stepped closer then, but she didn't. Even behind her mask, she's scared and confused. Just a little. But its there.

Hours. Days. Years. There had been an entire speech for the day he met her. One of promises, what ifs, and forgotten goodbyes. A speech, the war had stolen. Countless pages, replaced with two words.
"You left." Two steps closer. The smell of scorched flesh, all but forgotten. "Fila, why are you in Hoshido?"
Disbelief faded. Her darker clothes. The fact that she threw fire, when the entire city burned. Ethan's hanging mouth closed and he brushed his hair aside. A shake of his sword sent the dead mage's blood across the ground beside him and the wanderer's voice hardened.
"She sent you. Didn't she?" He scoffed. "Serena couldn't catch me, so they send you? Hm? What's next?" His voice turned harsh. "My fucking mother? Huh. That's the kind of game you're playing?"
The sword rose. Its steel, placed between them.
"What the fuck are you doing here, Fila!"

It was disconcerting to watch Fila's mask drop. The attempt at mimicking her old personalty hadn't worked, so she just dropped... everything. Fire Tome in one hand, Flux on her hip, and magic ready to heed her call. Otherwise? Flat. Dead. Lifeless.
The empty-hearted mercenary that burned down the village tilts its head to the side in a sort of numb confusion. "If you had a spat, I didn't hear about it. I've avoided taking contracts to or from the Ice Tribe; would sort of defeat the purpose of my leaving if I kept returning."
She gives a shrug that somehow avoids dropping her guard in the slightest, keeping in firmly in her few even as she feigns looking away to fake some semblance of expression. She always felt like this after the worst jobs. Poor luck for her this time she couldn't suffer alone. "I'm just here because they needed another mage to round out their forces. No clue why they attacked, and they paid me in advance anyways."
One of the huts collapses in on itself as it finally succumbs to the flames. Apart from the two of them, there was no one left in the village, all either fled or dead. Fila had made sure of that before jumping the soldiers. Her own 'escort' might still be here, but after the three of them had seen what Ethan did to the rest of the raiding party, she doubted it. Most likely they were killing anyone who had fled the carnage.
She had planned on running after mopping up the soldiers, but then... Ethan.

He kept still. Blade, unmoving as the hut collapsed between them. Embers escaped the wreckage, fluttering before losing themselves in the night. The building's destructive light played along Ethan's cheek. Its touch couldn't be ignored. He could feel its nibbling at his waist, eager for something else to eat. "A job? Coin? People are dying, some by your hand. But no, you're just here. Fuck's sake, Fila, you don't even know why you're killing them."
He stepped over smoldering wood. The sword still pointed towards the woman before him. Ethan's shoulders tensed as he leaned forward. His feet parted, coiling as he readied a response. Bent brows and narrow eyes damned her alongside his words.
"Look at what you're doing." He sighed. "Doesn't matter, does it? I haven't seen my sister since they tried to execute me. You didn't even know about that, right? You're just here. Well, so am I."
The blade rose. Orange blurs danced down its bleeding metal.
"This coin worth dying for?"
The screams had died in a matter of seconds. Replaced, with a crackling symphony. He waited for Fila's response, ready to kill another part of his past.

Fila seems mesmerized by the tip of the blade, taking a step back out of lunging range. "We all do what we know how, and hope that keeps us alive Ethan."
"Lots of things are worth dying for Ethan. Food, shelter... A chance to forget your past."
A hint of anger appears on her previously blank face, a spark of movement in her lifeless limbs.
"I don't need to be anything other than what my contracts demand. That's how I had to live when I left. It was either that or get dragged into a war I never wanted to live!"
She growls, almost feral, and points a flaming hand at him. The magic does not strike out, but the fire responds to her own emotions being to truly ignited for the first time since she left the frozen lands.
"You heard what they all said! By the gods, you were just like me. You remember those fools, don't you? The Ice Tribe in rebellion, making freedom fighters and soldiers of children and parents alike! I didn't want to be apart of that!"
A manic chuckle begins to well up inside her, as she gives a sweeping wave to the blazing funeral pyre of the once happy village. "Not like that worked out well, did it Ethan?!"

"This is what you know?" Ethan's right hand left the blade's ribbed hilt and swept across the amber hut. His eyes kept with hers, unwilling to move. "Well, I know it too. You left, Fila. I've seen it happen to our village. Yeah, they deserved it. These people didn't."
His glare tightened, turning venomous until she spoke of new beginnings. Eyes relaxed. Brows, rose. "Look around you." He said. "You're in it. You're part of it. This war dragged you in, dragged us both in. Just look what side you're on, or are you gonna say that's just survival too?"
The moment her burning palm rose, Ethan's blade jumped up. He scrambled closer, sure that if the blast hit him at this distance, she would feel its heat too. Both of them would drop, yet he was hoping she didn't attack. His hands were shaking. His knees, weaker. Though planted feet were ready to push in, he didn't want to move.
"I didn't want to be either. You knew me. Damn it, Fila. I wasn't a soldier. And neither were you. Now look at us." He scanned the surrounding ruins. "Hands down, Fila. I don't want to kill you."

Tears amidst the fire. He was right, she didn't know what she was doing. Her life was a mess, and she may well have been better off staying with the Ice Tribe. But...
"At least I got to make my choice! Everything is about survival!"
But to admit that meant admitting defeat. That everything she'd done up till now was pointless. That all these people...
"I'm not going to kill you Ethan. No one's paid me to. Yet. I charge extra for family and friends anyways."
No. There had to be a reason. Anger and confusion, plainly evident on her face. She does not want to be here. She needed to sort this out, and she couldn't do that while Ethan was here.
"Fine, Ethan. If you don't want to kill me, then let me go. Unless you think you can 'redeem' me like some fairy tale prince, in which case I'll gladly set you on fire for your trouble.".

"Them or you?" Ethan shook his head, scoffing. "Do you hear yourself right now? These people. They weren't a threat. They weren't going to burn your home down, rip you from bed. Slaughter you. You made the wrong choice. Just like Campbell."
"I killed him, Fila." His voice calmed, seeking weaker tones. He broke away from her eyes. Charred grounds offered little comfort. The crackling fire accused him of greater sins. "He's dead, Fila. Cause he made the same choice. Yeah. It's about survival, but only for me. I didn't choose this. There was never a choice, but you. You left. There's a thousand other countries, and you still picked this war."
Shoulders slumping, Ethan's sword touched the rubble by his feet. "You couldn't kill me, Fila. Not with what you've learned in books. It wouldn't be enough. Not against the things I've done." He paused with a long breath. "Things I've got to live with. Just like what you've done here. You'll live with this."
His sword found its sheathe. The ground's peppered wood shifted around Ethan's boot as he stepped around the woman before him. "Burn me. And I will kill you. You were already a regret anyways."

"You... What? Campell?" Campell was... Dead? She didn't know how to deal with it. When she left, it was supposed to be fine. As if time wouldn't move where she was. A foolish thought when confronted directly, but she hadn't been making the best decisions anyways.
"A 'thousand other countries'. Don't pretend its as easy as that Ethan. We're both too jaded for those fairy tales of freedom." He was right though, she doubted she could kill him. Another time, maybe. But not this night.
She breaths a small sigh of relief as he sheathes his sword, letting her own flames diminish as she stepped to the side to let him pass.
"Walk in safety, Ethan." she murmurs as he goes by.

"It's not a fairy tale." Ethan sighed. "Just a mistake. I guess neither of us ran far enough."
He stopped passed her, hand still on the blade. "I won't. And you know that. If anyone comes after, I'll kill them, then you."
Flesh, soot, and blood burned Ethan's nose as he stomped down the burning street. Part of him wanted to turn around, cut Fila down before she had the chance to tell anyone he was there. Nohr's threat was never far behind and, somehow, it had found another way to use his past against him. And he knew, killing her now would end any problems. But, he wasn't Nohr. He had to remember that, keep himself intact.
Ethan stopped in place, glancing back down the road. With a shake of the head, he started back towards the inn. Raziel was waiting.
