A quiet village, just South West of Marcarth that's currently occupied by Nohrian citizens. Soldiers occupy the garrison there, where they routinely scout the land and ensure that the place is defended. Unfortunately, the village has seen a fair share of desertions, a slow rise in criminal activity, and the occasional trouble of bandits. Those that wander too far out are never seen from again, either captured by the deserters turned bandits or some other strange occurrence. The Nohrian soldiers do their best to protect the people, as well as ensure convoys reach the village, and also leave from it.
One particular soldier that was out and about was Kyverian, patrolling the outskirts of the village to ensure that another convoy passed through without being assaulted by bandits. A small squadron consisting of himself and two other soldiers made their rounds. As per usual, the two chatter away during idle moments while Kyverian kept his eyes peeled on the snow covered road.
The ice and snow might've been bitter and cutting for the rest of the village, soldier of civilian, but it was quite comfortable for Fila. Compared to the deathly cold of the ice tribe's home, this was pleasantly chilly. It brought back the founder memories of home, and she also felt quite smug in her acclimation compared to the more professional soldiers who froze despite being better equipped. Small joys for a mercenary.
The garrison captain had immediately hired her after her contract with one of the smugglers in the area expired, and she had been sent out to reinforce one of the outer patrols. She had been stepping lightly across the snow as her tribe had taught, but upon spotting a group of Nohrian guards up ahead she let her footsteps fall louder. It was only polite not to surprise them, and with the crime rate she'd hate to get skewered by a jumpy guard thinking she was a bandit.
She calls out to the group ahead "'Ave any of you seen a captain by the name of Kyverian?"

Both soldiers glanced towards one another upon the calling of Kyverian's name. Soon enough, the iron-clad warrior pushes past the other two armored guards. Of the three present, his stature was certainly a head or two taller than the average Nohr soldier. Unlike the other two, there was a purple plume sticking out the top of his helmet, marking him a soldier of experience and some level of importance. Two blue eyes rest coldly onto Fila before he eventually speaks.
"What business do you have with me?" Kyverian spoke up, his hand already moving closer to the hilt of his bronze sword. He keeps it there, refusing to touch the handle, for now. "No funny business." The other two guards look to one another before they turn back to the woman on the road. With their lances still held at ease, they await for further orders before they make any reaction whatsoever.
Fila's eyes flicker over the three soldiers, her own hand rest on her Flux tome. Ah, so she was dealing with someone moderately important. Or at least, someone who thought they were important. A bit annoying to deal with someone so tense, but the atmosphere was fairly on edge, so perhaps she was the one in the wrong. Either way, it might be a good opportunity to make some connections. A good reputation was always helpful when looking for work with Nohr. Fila clears her throat before answering, tone dropping out of the casual accent into clear, crisp enunciation. "I am Fila Filigree, a mercenary. The garrison commander has contracted my services until you can be reinforced by real soldiers. I have been ordered to report to you for the time being. Sir."

There's a slight grimace on the captain's face. Being told that reinforcements were required had left him a tad insulted. Especially when only a single mercenary was brought to be of aid. The other two soldiers look to one another, sharing the sentiment of being underwhelmed by the presence of their aid. "Understood..." Kyverian's eyes are closed briefly, as he proceeds over towards Fila so that there is less of their words heard by those un-involved.
"We're to watch out for bandits and ensure that convoys may enter and leave. We also ensure that no bandits may enter or leave. Unless we kill them." The other two guards nod along, the best plan they had ever heard all day. Soon enough, Kyverian gives a glance over to the mercenary, sizing her up in comparison to the average soldier. So far, he did not seem impressed with what he saw.
"I trust you have some form of weaponry?" Kyverian speaks up again, the other two guards adjusting the grip on their lances. Kyverian's hand calmly slides away from the hilt of the bronze sword. "Things will be dangerous ahead, knowing what you can do will help." The other two guards nod in agreement, letting the captain do most of the talking. For now, they wait in silence, fully expecting an answer of some kind.
Ah. Those expressions of wounded arrogance. It appeared she had the misfortune of being saddled with a squad foolish enough to think they got to be picky about their aid. Lovely. The explanation they gave her was succinct and utterly unnecessary. It wasn't like she didn't know what border patrol did, and Fila had already heard a much gruffer version of the same speech from the garrison commander. Why did everyone assume she didn't know what she was doing? Oh, but now he was asking if she was armed. He had let his own guard down a little, apparently accepting her answer. Despite her frustration, Fila decided to meet him halfway. She could still call the magic to her hand, likely just as fast as he could draw his sword, but the deescalation of hostilities would make everyone involved feel better. Fila holds his gaze, patting the tome underneath her coat in response. "I would be a rather poor mercenary if I didn't. I am a trained dark mage." She was... more than slightly annoyed at the lack of respect. Honestly, he should be happy to have some backup. There were only three of them before she arrived, and if any of the bandits had somewhat decent armor (which, considering how many brigands were deserters, seemed likely) they'd be in no small amount of trouble. His equipment wasn't even much higher quality than her own, it was just more polished and embellished.

The talk of being a trained dark mage certainly put them at ease. Except for Kyverian, of course. He'd much rather see the training in action, rather than hear about it. But, he does seem much more amiable to Fila 's presence. "Ah. A dark mage, I hope to see your skill in action." Soon enough, the other two breathe a heavy sigh of relief. There was still tension lingering in the air, but much of it had washed away with the banter.
"We're marching." The captain gave the command, the two soldiers gradually switching their current formation up. As it were, they had been marching in a triangle formation, which simply wouldn't work with a fourth person. They soon move about, shifting all around until there was a spot open for the mercenary. "You shall walk to my left. Do not take it personally, but I'd prefer you not have to waste time aiming over us. I will protect you from other melee attackers, however." It sounded like a good enough deal: Kyverian would be able to defend against physical attacks while she was still able to cast from her tome without worry of friendly fire.
"Oh! Captain!" The lancer at his back soon spoke up, lifting up her helmet to reveal a face, "You forgot to ask her name! We can't keep calling her 'Mercenary' or 'Merc' y'know! Make her feel apart of the team, yeah?" The suggestion receives a nod of acceptance from Kyverian, who then turns back towards the recently acquired help. He awaited for the introduction, as if expecting Fila to chime in at any moment.
Well. At least the respected her chosen method of war. That was something, Fila supposed. The tension eased, and she was thankful for that. The captain declared march, Fila shuffling into the opening. She found no fault with captain's reasoning, and she was relieved he was having a thought to avoid friendly fire. Fila glances over at him, cracking a grin. "How chivalrous of you, Sir." She wasn't at all offended by his orders, and seemed outwardly at ease with them. If her current employer was trying to avoid allied casualties, she certainly wasn't going to complain.
She was, however, caught off guard by them asking for a name, almost reeling back in surprise. "Eh? I'm, uh Fila. Fila Filigree. I came in with the last caravan." It felt a little strange to be asked her name. No, that wasn't true. To be asked her name in such an earnest manner. It was nice, in a way, but also an uncomfortable reminder that she'd likely be trying to quietly dispose of these very same guards if they'd confronted her previous employers not a few days ago.

The talk of chivalry did little to sway the captain's mood in either regard. When one got right down to it, Kyverian would much rather the mage not incinerate him and his soldiers than to be safely hidden in the back. But, chivalry could also be interpreted as another reason to keep the mage near him. Though, once the name is given, Kyverian nods in turn. "Now, we both know each other's name." An obvious observation on his part, but he soon resigns to silence.
"I'm Alisa, Fila!" The spearwoman waves curtly at the back, marching behind her captain, "And I'm Thomas... Uhm... Err... Hey..." They had at least gotten the conversing out of the way as they trudge further along the road. The further they went, the farther away the quaint village had seemed. But sure enough, their patience would be duly reward. The march had finally began to bear fruit, as the sight of a stopped caravan comes into view.
Unfortunately, said caravan was in the process of requiring aid. Just as the commander had predicted; The brigands were beginning to grow bolder by the day, openly attacking a transport enroute to Marcarth. Four Nohrian soldiers laid dead upon the ground, each one suffering a different wound from the other. However, they had come upon not just any band of brigands. These were deserters, those that have chosen to throw their lot into personal freedom, self-service, and their own survival over their duty. Only two solders remained against four armed warriors, each of them easily distinguished by their lack of helmets and adjusted armor. Unlike the usual set of armor, theirs had been adjusted for more mobility, easier movement on the limbs. But it also offered less protection and made them easier to stand out.
"We have the enemy in sight." Kyverian's eyes are narrowed upon the action, as the two remaining loyalists are gradually worn down and beaten into the ground. Though, not killed yet, as the brigands seemed more occupied with stealing the convoy than killing more Nohrians. Kyverian turns to his left, his heated stare now upon Fila as he gauges her reaction to the violence. "It's time to move... Are you ready?"
The bronze sword is pulled from his sheathe, eyes darting back over towards the caravan, preparing to charge in and take the enemy by surprise.
Alas, the teasing seemed lost on the dour captain. Oh well. At least he was well composed. Fila would take a boring boss over a fool any day. Fila glances briefly over her shoulder as each of the soldiers gives their name. She could've easily figured out which was which based on sound, but if they were going to go the extra mile in accepting a random mercenary into their squad she might as well meet them halfway. She quickly turns back to the front, wanting to keep any eye on the surroundings. Her senses were somewhat better adapted than most of the other people she'd run across, by nature of growing up in much worse visibility, and she suspected the same would hold true here.
As they matched, the faint sounds of metal and metal reached her ears, and quickly grew louder. "Fighting ahead." she murmurs just loud enough for the rest of the squad to hear, and indeed they soon spot the assailed caravan. Inky-black shadows float from the Flux tome to swirl around her hand, eyes flicking briefly over to Kyverian as she nods. She looks between him and the closest brigand, guessing which one he would charge and preparing to soften up the target before her allies were within the firing line. The more they could eliminate before the brigands noticed them, the better their chances.

The captain had missed, and the other squadmates probably wouldn't get here before the enemies came over. So, she needed to eliminate as many enemies as she could from the battle.
Gritting her teeth, she summons another mass of dark magic and flings it at Fighter B. M|eb2vAq1-100 (Acc 77, DMG 12, CRT 1)

The Dark magic had caused one of the brigands to explode violently, leaving behind a mess and some scrap of armor as a result. The other archers remain steadfast, as the lonesome Brigand stares down the captain. Wounded but barely hanging on, Kyverian was still far better off than the brigand, however. He soon lets out a wounded, guttural growl that boasts his determination to see the captain dead. With the axe in hand, he sets to swinging wildly like a madman, in hopes of catching an attack.

Thomas makes it to the front, providing his assistance how best he is able. Alisa, on the other hand, struggles to keep up. For now, she wasn't making any progress in joining the fray, as she makes her way just barely in front of Fila. At least Fila now had three meatshields to distract the enemy with. "We got this! I got you covered!" Alisa makes sure she can provide some measure of protection for Fila while making sure she wasn't directly in the firing line.
Thomas, on the other hand, wastes no time. He keeps marching forward, making it to the center of the combat zone. Perhaps, his sheer, intimidating presence will draw their fire. For now, the archers seem heavily keen on firing another volley. With Alisa safeguarding Fila, one archer decides to take another shot in Fila's direction. The other goes for Kyverian, who was still busy handling the bandit while Thomas rushed the archers.
1-100 Outlaw A's Attack. The arrow finds its way against Kyverian's torso, striking through the platemail and adding another wound to his body.
1-100 Outlaw B's attack. Right when it seemed like it'd be over for Fila, Alisa manages to catch some of the force onto her armor. The arrow still finds its way to her, but doesn't completely knock her out of the fight."S-Sorry!"Alisa calls out, while making sure she's rock steady. Kyverian was already on the move, making his way from the now ruined melee zone and close in on the Outlaws that were currently taking potshots. The arrows wedged into his body are ignored, for now. Rushing down the enemy was far more important.

Unfortunately, he still had quite the distance to cross. But now, he was much closer than he originally was. Unfortunately, Thomas had yet to get any further than the Captain.
