The transition from tundra fort towards one of the many outlaying towns was a jarring experience. The frontlines, where the battles took place, was the only place that Kyverian could keep his mind upon. But the commanding officer sought to dabble into the ways of merchants by hiring out a handful of soldiers to guide a recently acquired business partner. Though, this was to bolster the Nohr's war efforts, Kyverian couldn't help but hum in frustration as the squadron of Nohr soldiers came upon the town of Patras. The soldiers marched in unison to show off their discipline. At the front, leading the pack, was the Silent Soldier, Kyverian Alto.
The black helmet left his face exposed, the plated steel that kept his body guard body suffered some scars, but looked to be well kept for. The bronze sword at his side is kept safely in the sheathe. Two blue eyes stare off into the distance where the village entrance was located. A whole squad of soldiers was sure to draw attention, especially when they came prepared to march where ever it is their Ward requested. While the various soldiers chatted amongst themselves in whispers, the stalwart swordsman stood in silent anticipation.

Just the sound of marching soldiers was enough to give the citizens of Patras heed. Those in the streets craned their necks to see the signature armor of the Nohrian regiment, but none approached for fear and reverence.
However, on the second story of a nearby inn, a particularly well-fed and well-dressed fellow observed the scene from the window.
"Aha, they're here!" the man exclaimed, he turned to face a woman sitting in a nook table. "Come have a look! I'm sure you'd be impressed!"
The lady turned her head before standing to walk to the window. The light from the gloom-filled sky made her features: a messy mop of blonde hair, a particular shapely form and beauty, with eyes with the hue of freshly spilled blood. Her manner of dress was reflective of the country she was in, a burgundy gown with a bloom skirt and pipe folds.
She leaned against the side of the window pane and took in the sight. "Hmmm... so, your friend in the military called them to protect you."
"Well, my protection is extended to you, of course! We'll discuss more with their unit captain. With me, now!"
The two of them made their way to the first floor, then came outside to meet with the unit.
"Aha! Good to see you boys!" the merchant exclaimed with both arms wide open, "My regards to your commanding officer! You are all well, I hope?"
The woman folded her arms and twisted her hip as she quietly studied the faces of the young company. Kyverian

The rank and file grunts eagerly chatted away to themselves, doing their best to look imposing while also entertaining each other as they collectively waited for the arrival of the Madame. Six armed soldiers in all, with the supposed leader of the squad standing at the front, his impassive gaze slowly turned towards the inn in particular, as if expecting something to emerge from that general direction. Sure enough, the soldiers quieted down as the Merchant's voice was heard.
"Squad Captain Kyverian Alto, here to escort you and your company to your destination. The commander filled us in prior." An armored hand reaches into the satchel, removing a rolled up parchment that's soon extended towards the Merchant. "All the paper work has been fulfilled. Keep this with you at all times." His attention refused to divert, keeping both eyes onto the one who had spoken first. The other soldiers soon begin their murmuring behind his back, only for a quick tilt of his head to end their rumor-mongering. The swordsman straightens his posture, the others following the motions as he speaks a third and final time.
"Gather your necessary items, we leave with haste."

What an incredibly staunch man he was. How very soldierly and dutiful.
"Yes, right!" the merchant exclaimed, he motioned his hand to the woman at his side, "Ah, uh, would you give the paperwork to her? I still need to gather my things. I'll be right back!" With a little skip to his step, the fellow ran back into the inn.
The woman turned back toward the squad captain and glanced him from head to toe. "Hmm..." she quietly retrieved the piece of parchment from his hand, "... Captain Kyverian Alto, was it? I apologize for my business partner. He was so elated to see the military retinue roll in that he had completely forgotten to pack."

The other five held their breath, expecting the usually blunt and insightful wisdom that often spills from Kyverian's mouth. He blinks only once, to change his attention from the departing merchant onto the woman that was by his side. Air is exhaled from the captain's nostrils, eyes closed momentarily as the others fully expect his words.
"They made the business arrangement and should have anticipated our arrival." One of the soldiers rolls their eyes, but Kyverian was busy following the request to have noticed. The parchment is handed over towards the woman, the captain's own gaze narrowed, somewhat. More words seemed likely to have fallen from his lips, but he soon decides against further unpleasant pleasantries. One of the other soldiers chime in on Kyverian's behalf.
"So... Where are we going? Did that merchant guy tell you?" One of the soldiers asked, his attention onto Madame. The others nod to one another, curious over the destination. Rather than interrupt their curiosity, the captain keeps his attention onto the inn. The soldiers, however, seemed more concern about the where of their destination.

The woman shrugged her shoulders to his words and shifted her weight on her legs, "Well, boys, he wants to go to the city of Marcarth, but since we're about a week's walk away, I recommended that he go to the next town so that he's not stuck in the wilderness." She shook her head, "Oh, but I shan't say more without a proper introduction."
With a dainty curtsy, she said thus, "You will call me Madame. Pleased to make your acquaintance, good sirs."
In the background, the merchant appeared to be running from the entrance of the inn with a large bag on his back. However, instead of running immediately to the guard, he turned and ran into the horse stable. Kyverian

The waiting game was to going on for a little while longer. The warrior's patience was a terrible thing to waste, or so the others assumed as Kyverian continues to hold his ground in anticipation. No murmuring or muttering, however. That was an unsightly thing to do when the charge was almost ready to depart. The captain turns his attention onto the others, a cold stare that could chill a campfire was sent their way.
"Stop slouching, we're marching."
The soldiers reply with the swift clanking of their armored joints. One by one, the form re-affirmed itself as Kyverian's attention eventually settles back onto Madame. "I trust you too, are equipped for the travel?" One quick glance is brought back to the woman, Kyverian's body twisting mid-motion as he moves in swiftly to form the front guard. From there, the rest of the soldiers formed up as if the merchant was going to slide a wagon into the formation.
The Escort squad now patiently waited for the merchant. The Madame

"I am always ready for an adventure, captain," smiled the Madame. She watched as the soldiers whipped themselves back into shape and reform their formation. After what felt like half an hour of waiting, the Madame turned aside to see a heavily-burdened donkey, ridden by the merchant himself.
"Tut, tut, stubborn mule! He simply would not move after I had gone through such trouble to put him together!" he groaned, "No more delays! We set forth straight to Marcarth!"
"Marcarth, Vinny?" the Madame's brow furrowed, "What, do you think these boys will carry you while you sleep? I wouldn't put it past their discipline, but it simply isn't practical."
"We'll play it by ear!" he replied with a crack of the donkey's reins, "Now, onward! We've gold to make!" The pack mule slowly begun its pace, signaling the beginning of the march. Kyverian

Collectively, the entire squad stared at the poor mule in disbelief. There was far too much of a burden on the poor pack mule's back. However, none at the heart to say anything regarding its struggling appearancer, none except for the captain, of course. Without missing a beat, Vinny is offered a word of wisdom from Kyverian. "Your carrier is overburdened, we'll be slowed down far more than we should." But, they would move regardless.
One by one, the armored escort rattle their armors to the sound of their sabatons crunching underneath the crisp layer of snow. Kyverian remained at the front, his back to the mule as he ensures that the vanguard remains focused and vigilant. The path ahead was going to remain secure, so long as Kyverian marched at the forefront. Although the other soldiers were cautious of the way the mule seemed ready to keel over, the captain marched proudly and without paying the others much mind.

It had been two hours since they had left Patras. The merchant upon the mule was already asleep, breaking the silence with intermittent gargling, snorting, and grunting.
The Madame trailed a little away from the group, desiring to have personal space rather than safety. She often picked up clumps of snow along the ground, then went further to juggle tightly packed snowballs in her hands. When those bored her, she tossed them aside and ran a little further ahead of the troupe to pick up a walking stick.
"Boo," she muttered as she brushed it down, "If it weren't for his insatiable desire for sales, we would've lost sight of the town by now." While they were a ways away from the town, one could still see the sight of it.
The Madame waited for the troupe to catch up to her, and with her eyes locked on the captain, she said, "Say, do you boys have any songs you sing in the military? Maybe that would make things a little less droll." Kyverian

The others didn't seem to mind the Madame's shenanigans, it was preferable over the silently long trudge from Patras. The silence was only broken by the snores of the merchant, the labored groans of the poor mule, as well as the sound of rattling metal grinding against metal. Two hours into the march, yet Kyverian's gaze hardly wavered in the concentrated, impassive stare. The chilling wisps that flowed from their breath with each exhale was a reminder of the cold's embrace.
While the other soldiers cracked a smile or muffled a laughter, Kyverian kept his gaze locked onto Madame's. The question of whether or not songs were sung was soon answered. "I don't sing." Replied the captain, but soon after he had spoken, another soldier pipped up at the mentioning of singing. Without skipping a beat, the soldier cleared his throat, preparing to sing a Nohrian song to make the travel a little less dull.
"O cold embrace, O snow and tundra that blows from frozen wastes!"
"Long is the dark, short is spring's good grace!"
"Yet we march onwards, forwards, towards!"
"To Hoshido borders, our boots a-thunder!"
"To take our crop yield!"
"To rip their forces a-sunder!"
All the guards had collectively joined in on the last part. Even Kyverian couldn't help but chime in with his own voice. But, his concentration lapsed, immediately turning back towards Madame with a slightly disgusted look. "That. That was not singing. I don't sing." The other guards turn their gaze away, refusing to meet the Captain's as he turns back to stare at the mule. Soon, his gaze returns forward, marching unhindered by the snow covered path.

This song was rather aggressive. What a strong collective spirit they had... even the squad leader himself joined in with the final verse.
When Kyverian scowled, the Madame could not help but chuckle. "Well, dear. Poetical speaking and singing lyrics make no difference to me, but even then you have the heart of a patriot. You should be proud of yourself." The merchant's snore nearly interrupted her. "... I would rather hear that than the slumber song Vinny's making. Anymore songs, or should I try singing my own?"

The Guard Captain remained silent when asked for further songs. He never made any of them, only chiming in when appropriate. But, before he could say another word, another guard had so graciously decided to speak up.
"He doesn't make up any of the songs, really. He just likes to add to the chorus every now and then!"
Kyverian's gaze shifts swiftly to the left, almost turning his head as he averts gazing. But the same soldier speaks up. "We don't have a whole lot of songs. We're just soldiers, not songstresses. Though... Some do come by to sing, but we usually end up forgettin' the lyrics." Collectively, the other five soldiers nod before the captain once again chimes in.
"One should take pride in their land of birth." Some of the more vocal soldiers cheer at that, while the less than patriotic, but still loyal, nod along with the sentiment. But, before the conversation could reach a dropping point, another guard speaks up, more interested in hearing a woman sing than a band of un-merry men and their grouchy captain.
"Sing a song!"
"Yeah! Let's hear a woman sing!"
"We'll be extra quiet!"
Kyverian, however, had nothing to add. His gaze does soon return to The Madame in expectation of her singing skills.

From what she gathered, it was apparent that the captain was the type to let his actions speak. That was something she could respect, at least.
Of course, hearing the men request her to sing was enough to cause her to blush. The Madame proceeded to walk closer with the troupe, a little nearer to Kyverian .
"Well, in that case," said she with a nod of her head. She began to clear her throat roughly, as if someone was scraping the rust off of iron. An inhalation, another exhalation.
Then, with a slow tempo and a deep, crisp voice, the Madame sung thus with a tone most contemplative:
"High over waves, sweet wayfarer, on wings like sail
Bestride the storm, strong wayfarer, conqueror of gale
Dream of earth, dear wayfarer, oh, hear my request
Home ever near, my wayfarer, come now to my rest."
At the end of the song, there was a brief silence aside from the sound of feet crushing snow.
The Madame clasped her hands behind herself, "... So, what did you think?"

The closed distance is immediately noticed, but the captain makes no fuss regarding the intrusion of his personal space. Instead, he allows her close proximity, refusing to hinder her song. Upon her singing, the guards are enthralled by the sheer prowess when compared to when they sing. Even Kyverian had his eyes closed, as the men continue marching and guarding the caravan. The tundras are forgotten, the biting chills left behind in favor of the ports. Once the song concluded, the soldiers were quick to chime in.
"Excellent singing, way better than my girl back home!" "Wow! You can really sing! Encore, encore!" "You sure made our singing look like amateur hour! Aha!" "Amazing! Simply amazing!" "Are you sure you're not a songstress? I can listen to you for hours!"
Meanwhile, the captain's disposition shifted slightly warmer than prior to this moment. Though, if the intention was to make him smile, The Madame hadn't achieved that just yet. Instead, amidst the flurry of praises from the five soldiers, the captain offered a thundering applause as his praise. Though, despite all the cheering and want for an encore, none of the soldiers had stopped, even while she sung. The dedication to the task at hand overshadowed their temporary entertainment.
