A forest in the wilderness, and a place untraveled by normal civilization
Afternoon
It was a serene place, far removed from regular civilization and the troubles therein. Trees spread their branches in untamable array, and the very floor was nearly as dark as night itself. As a result, this place bred only the finest of delectable mushrooms, drawing in great boars with tusks the size of broadswords, but within them, exemplary meat of the richest quality. This place was choicest of hunting grounds for a certain type of predator.
A pack of wolves moved silently across the hunting ground, observing the wild boar that greedily grazed upon mushrooms that were dug from the earth. One of them, presumably the leader of the wolves, let out a bark, causing their presence to be made known. The smaller boar scattered at the very moment, yet they were not pursued. The largest boar had stood his ground, accepting the challenged presented by the wolf leader.
The alpha had a larger silhouette than those of his kin, and in fact he had such broad features, one would not quickly recognize him as a wolf. Moreover, he rose and stood on his hind legs, his arms were like tree trunks, and his height was greater than that of the portly boar he had challenged.
The boar charged forth with its tusks bent forward in attack. The large monster held his ground and caught the hog by firmly gripping the front of the head, then used the momentum to lift the creature over his head to slam it hard into the ground. The impact broke the boar's tusks, kicked dirt into the air, and caused the beast to let out a groaning squeal. Immediately after, another wolf closed in and seized the creature by its throat, and so nature took its course.
With the kill assured, the large wolf's form distorted and returned to a simpler form. With one arm, one of the hog's legs were seized, and the family of wolves followed after him in the dark shade of the trees.
It wasn't often that Koume traveled within Hoshido's territory. Coming to Hoshido meant bad memories she really didn't want to relive, yet here she was again. Aki was just as peaceful as it was when she left. The maidens welcomed her with wide arms and teary eyes. The monks had watched disapprovingly as the ladies had hounded Koume with question after question. And it was nice. The Wolfskin darn near cried from the overwhelming amount of love and concern she was greeted with. Not that she did cry. She wasn't some weak baby that cried every time someone welcomed her with open arms and a warm smile. No, don't be stupid.
She didn't stay long. Not that that was her choice. The monks would've preferred her not stay at all but the shrine maidens, along with the new priestess, forced them into letting her stay one night. Seeing the monks look so defeated and angry was enough to keep Koume smiling that whole day into the night. Going back to the hut wasn't favorable by any means. Memories lingered there and if it weren't for some of the maidens spending the night with her, she surely would've stayed up all night. But it was morning now, and that meant leaving again. With her hood pulled up and a satchel of goodies, the girl was sent off after many hugs and promises to return.
Hours of walking led her to a forest. Unlike the forests of Nohr, Koume could rest without worrying too much about what creature would appear. That didn't mean she was going to be careless. The girl made her resting spot hidden in the tree's leaves. Her legs swung back and forth while she dug through her, surprisingly clean, new satchel. Scraps of food and spools of thread, varying medicinal herbs and needles. They had even packed some of her favorite sweets. Ah, why were her eyes burning? The girl furiously rubbed at her eyes before nearly falling from her branch at the sudden squealing, followed by the faint smell of blood.
It sounded like an echo. The smell was fleeting. This was something she surely wouldn't have picked up on if she was human. The satchel was secured and with one jump, Koume was on the ground. Where there was blood, there was a fight waiting for her. Good, she needed something to help her forget about these stupid emotions. One heavy inhale was all it took before she went running. The smell had started becoming stronger and stronger until she was standing behind a man and a pack of wolves, a great boar proving itself the source of the smell.
The pack was already feasting upon the raw meat of the boar when the beta wolf raised her head. She turned aside to the large man and gestured to him.
Big Brother.
Hm?
An outsider.
The large man was sitting, but his head turned by the word of the younger wolves to see the face of the newcomer. Even in the darkness of the forest, his eyes caught onto the frame of the smaller wolfskin, then to her small, crimson eyes.
With a huff, the man rose to his full height and advanced with heavy steps until the sun caught more of his features. He was muscular, with broad, powerful arms and long, shaggy hair. His facial features were sharp and angular, and the pupils in his eyes had contracted.
Those clothes were not like the human locals, and that red cape? No, this was most certainly a person from the other side of the continent.
A low growl reverberated from the brawny wolfskin as his lips pulled back, revealing teeth bloodied by the meat of the boar.
"Who dares?" he asked with a low voice. His human voice caused the heads of the feasting wolves to raise. "Speak, stranger." Koume
For all of her talk, Koume had to admit that the sight and overwhelming smell of blood left her feeling a little nauseous. Her face remained unfazed, however, as her swept the scene with her eyes before finally looking to the man. He was clearly taller and stronger than her, and with the added addition of the wolves, she was outmatched. But that wouldn't stop her from fighting anyways. She mimicked the man's posture in hopes of making herself appear taller, then spoke.
"I dare! You think you're tough because you're taller and stronger and have more friends? Well you're not! You're just some weird old guy who lives in the forest with wolves." Looking at him more closely, Koume spotted ears all too similar to hers on the man. Nothing like Leliana's ears. The man wasn't a Kitsune, but a Wolfskin. The thought of another one of her kind being here lit a second fire inside her. It was joyful at first. Then angry.
"I left Hoshido to find people like me then I follow your blood trail out of curiosity and what do I discover? Another Wolfskin? I thought I was the only one here! You're not even that far from my home village. I traveled a good part of Nohr and didn't find a single one of our kind, only a dumb Kitsune lady! I come back to visit and suddenly you're just here? You and the dumb lady have your nations all wrong!" The teen's face had blossomed with color, her fists tightly clenched. First a Kitsune in Nohr, then a Wolfskin in Hoshido? What stupid luck she had.
"Grrrmm..." growled the larger wolfskin as he scratched the top of his head. His neck twisted back and forth as he contemplated an answer, and his arms appeared to rear back in posture of attack. There was a fierceness, no, a determination that shown on his face, one that spelled certain danger...
All of a sudden, his large hands wrapped beneath the shoulders of the smaller wolfskin, and she was hoisted high up into the air!
"Another wolfskin!" he cheered happily, "There's another wolfskin, guys!"
At his jovial response, the younger pups immediately gathered around, barking and yipping. To one with the ears of a wolf, the young, sprightly voices spoke intelligible words.
"Yay! Who is it? Who is it?" "I wanna see, Big Brother!" "She smells different!"
The shift in the man's stance had Koume slowly lower her body until she was a little higher than a crouch, her hand already hovering over the lucky rock in her pocket. A big guy like him shouldn't be able to get her if she stayed close to the ground. He might have height and strength on her, but she had speed. Her fingers twitched with anticipation. "Hurry up and attack already!"
Then he moved forward and Koume sunk only to be caught by the shoulders. The speed and height at which she was lifted was enough to make her lightheaded. Despite the dizziness, the girl flailed her legs and scratched at whatever skin she could reach. It wasn't fair! The fight didn't even get to start and she was already at a disadvantage! She had expected to be thrown back down or tossed elsewhere, but the pain hadn't come. Instead there had been a myriad of young, excited voices. Well, this was unexpected. Her attacks stopped with the confusion. It was only for a moment, then she was kicking once more.
"Put me down you big oaf! You dumb muscle-brained giant! Where are those voices coming from?"
"Haha! You're playful, too, huh?" the big wolfskin laughed at her flailing, even with her foot in his face, "That's great!" He spun around a little bit more until a wolf at the height of his waist came alongside him.
"Kenta, the little one wishes to be put down," said a feminine voice, "Be so kind as to do so."
"Huh? Oh, sure, Mother," replied the wolfskin. He turned aside and lowered the girl so that she may stand on her two feet.
"Good boy, Kenta," was the reply. The larger wolf looked to the smaller wolfskin, "Outsider, you have the ears of a wolf, it is natural that you understand us." Her golden eyes glistened, "For now, you are at our mercy. You will tell me who you are, and if you are a threat to my family."
Being put back on the ground had her wobbling for a moment. Stupid tree man... Lifting her up super high then back down again... Once her balance had been regained, she turned her attention to the wolf who had been speaking. 'Mother', if she heard the meathead correctly. As bratty as she was, Koume had decided to at least show the wolf a little respect. After all, she did answer her question and had the oaf put her down.
"I'm Koume. Kou, if you prefer. I'm not gonna be a threat to anyone. I mean come on, you're almost my height and that meathead over there is at least twice my size with five times the muscle. I can't promise that I won't fight back if any of your family threatens me though.."
The maternal tone of the wolf had made Koume uncomfortable. She had interacted with mothers before, briefly, but seeing another Wolfskin address this wolf as 'Mother'.. It filled the girl with an emotion she couldn't name. Her eyes jumped from place to place while her weight was shifted from one foot to the other, and back again. There had been another question on the tip of her tongue. 'Mother' had answered her first one, maybe she'd be so kind as to answer this one.
"How long have you been here? Are there others like us in Hoshido? Can you tell me... please?" Koume's face scrunched at the 'please', as if the word had left a bitter taste in her mouth.
“Aw, thanks!” the wolfskin man laughed, “I like that word! Meathead!”
The matriarch seemed to sigh. “I apologize for him, Koume, and none of my kin are bid to threaten you. Wolf clans are rivals by nature, but we are still one as family.” She sat herself comfortably on the floor, “To your question... as far as we wolves are, there are many clans of us in Hoshido. However, your kind, the wolfskin, are few and far between, especially here. We know of the hamlet in Nohr by word of the Nohrian wolves, but there is no such place in Hoshido of a wolfskin den.” Her head dipped down, “Kenta himself does not remember how he happened here.”
“Yeaah, by the way, me, Kenta,” said the man as he pointed to himself, “Have you been to the other side?”
“Kenta, I will be asking her questions,” interrupted the matriarch with a stern gaze, “You two may be of similar kin, but you are still under my clan. It is so that outsiders must be addressed by the head of the clan.”
Was he serious? This oaf really was a meathead... Koume eyed the man wearily before turning her attention back to Mother. She had a fountain of patience to deal with her, but when looking at the other Wolfskin, that fountain seemed to morph into a sea.
"That's fine. Don't know how you can handle all that stupid though.." She had tried hard to be respectful, and thinking she wouldn't hear her mumbling was stupid. Mother was a dang wolf. Her ears were probably better than her own! (And that was really saying something...)
The amount of attention the teen paid was almost enough to give her a headache. Her travels through Nohr had brought little information about her kind. Word of the Wolfskin Hamlet had been picked up once, but the unreliability of the source caused her to pass it off as a lie. Now Mother was speaking of the same place. She seemed reliable enough, at least.
Koume hated saying it, and she really really hated saying it, but it seemed that she and Kenta were more alike than she thought. The similarity between their history was too close for comfort. Mother's sternness towards the man was enough to pull the teen from her thoughts. The control Mother had over him, and the rest of the clan for that matter, was incredible. While Koume's face remained tense, the admiration was clear in her eyes.
"If meathead doesn't know where he came from, how did you find him?"
"We wolves rough our children into shape. It is no different to me whether they are wolf or wolfskin," said the matriarch with unabashed eyes, "Foolishness will only last so long."
"Hey, I'm right here you know," Kenta grumpily injected.
"I know," was the reply, "As for how he ended up with us, well..."
In that moment, her ears perked up, and her eyes floated to the horizon, and after a few seconds, Kenta noticed as well. A howl had carried on the wind, followed by a strong, male voice.
"Yama! Yama!"
The matriarch rose immediately, then howled back with a strong response. "Kawa! Kawa!" After this, the voice on the wind silenced. "The mountain tribe nears," spoke Mother, her gaze returned to the taller wolfskin, "Kenta, take the boar. We must leave the Sacred Hunting Ground immediately."
"Right!" exclaimed Kenta as he hopped to his feet. The pups followed after him as they returned to the boar.
"It is not safe for you here, Koume,” continued the matriarch, “We are gracious to you only because we’re intertwined with your kind, but the mountain tribe is... a different story.” She turned to leave, “Your safety is assured if you travel with us. Decide carefully if you wish to follow.”
"I don't know about that lady-- ah, I mean, Mother?-- if the oaf is still a meathead at his age, doesn't that mean he's gonna be like that forever?" The man looked older than any teenager she had ever encountered. Heck, Koume was pretty sure that he was the biggest adult she had ever met. If he was an adult to begin with. Her head tilted slightly at the thought. Did age not matter when it came to foolishness? Granted she thought most adults were stupid, but he seemed genuinely stupid. Like an overgrown child.
Were they seriously planning to run away? And were they seriously asking if she was going to stay? Koume's nose scrunched at the thought. Running away wasn't in her dictionary. Sure she'd weasel her way out of sticky situations but that wasn't running away! That was just.... escaping unfair odds. There was plenty of them to fight back against the mountain tribe, so why weren't they? The fact that Mother was so quick to leave had Koume's mind bubble with confusion. Mother was giant! Mother looked big enough to take down a full grown man!
Mother was reluctant to fight, and should mean something, right? Koume felt a growl growing in her throat. She didn't want to run away. She didn't want to be weak. But if Mother was leaving, that means she should follow along. Besides, how else was she going to learn more about her kind? This was the first time she'd ever met a Wolfskin and even though he was a complete meathead, Koume wasn't about to let this opportunity slip.
"Uuuggghhhh fine! I'll follow along, but not because I'm afraid to fight! If you didn't have information I needed and if that oaf wasn't a Wolfskin, I would've stayed!" Koume tightened the bow that held her cloak around her shoulders and held into her bag. "Go ahead, I'll be right behind you."
"Unfortunately, Koume," said the matriarch with a nod, "It is not a matter of fighting or running away. It has been for generations that the wolves of this land share this hunting ground. For us to stay is an encroachment of tradition..."
"That, and the mountain wolves are pretty big!" inserted Kenta from afar, his ears drooped down a moment later, "N-not that they're better or anything than us."
"Hm, just as well. Their tribe is great and numerous because their matriarch is strong, and the hardiness of her children are like the mighty trees that withstand the fire." She shook her head gently as sorrow came to her eyes and tone, "As for us, we have already lost too many of our own to even consider any form of resistance. So, whether by tradition or selfishness, we do not have the power, numbers, or heart to fight our own sisters and brothers."
The despondency passed as she raised her head to bark, "Everyone, return with me to the den." She immediately bounded to the front of the tribe and led them forth.
Kenta lifted the huge boar over his shoulders and gave Koume a cheeky grin before turning to leave. "C'mon, Tiny! Let's get going!"
Koume frowned at the ground upon hearing this information, kicking at a rock that looked too comfortable in the dirt. “They like a bunch of dumb bullies to me. You don’t wanna fight them ‘cause they’re your brothers and sisters, but they got no problems fightin’ you? How stupid…”
She had felt something akin to guilt in her stomach. That guilt, or whatever it had been, shifted into angry. White hot anger. Tiny… Tiny? Who did this jerk think he was talking too?
“Listen you meathead, just ‘cause you’re freakishly huge doesn’t make me tiny! I’m actually real tall for my age! You’re just stupidly tall! What did this wolf lady fed you as a kid? I bet you’re like, half tree or something. Stupid giant oaf!” Koume’s mouth ran as fast as she did. In fact, it wouldn’t be far off to say that running her mouth helped her run faster. "You're lucky I ain't older, or I woulda taken you down by now!"
A blank look appeared on Kenta’s face at Koume’s outburst, as if processing the sudden overload of information that bombarded his brain. His mouth hung open as he breathed through it, letting some drool patter down his chin. Words that were meant to incite wrath went into one ear and out the other.
However, he did catch that last bit. The big fellow broke out a hearty and goofy-sounding guffaw, “Wahaw-haw-haw! Not in a million years, kid! D’ya see these muscles? HRRPH! Haha!” He flexed his free arm, causing it to swell dramatically. “I betcha I could konk ya’ out in one hit if you stood still!”
