As the gentle breeze drifted across the wide plains of the Nohrian hinterlands, it stirred the grass, creating faux waves through it. It danced across the open air, stirring the leaves of a solitary tree that had grown in defiance of the rolling hills. And beneath that tree, it teased at the edge of a fur lined hood, though not enough to disturb its wearer. An enchantment had been place on the hood, it seemed, both to prevent it being flipped back by wind, and to hide the wearer's face in shadow, regardless of how the light shone.
That same, solitary person slumbered, their armour poking out from the gap in the front of their cloak, the hilt of a sword visible. And atop what was an ample bosom, a cat slept, the orange of its coat complementing what little of her red tunic could be seen. Eventually they stirred, though they did not move as not to disturb their cat. "Tobias," she grumbled, looking around at the open plains that surrounded them. "You were supposed to keep watch."

"Not a very good guard cat, are they?" A young voice called from the tree. The owner of the voice looked down at the woman from her perch, bare feet kicking back and forth in a child-like manner. Bright red eyes looked at the cat with undisguised happiness and, while her face remained clear of any real emotion, her tail began to wag underneath her cloak."You could've been robbed or even killed and you wouldn't have even known! Kinda dumb to leave your life in the hands of a cat if you ask me."
Koume trusted her life to many animals before. It was like they were the only ones in this entire nation that didn't want to hunt her down and even then it was questionable. The animals here were much more aggressive than in Hoshido, but friendship could temporarily be bought with food. Cats were tricky creatures though, both here and in Hoshido. This one- Tobias, if she heard right- must've been very trusted by this traveler for them to just fall asleep like they did.
"What sorta magic do you have on your cloak anyways? You can't imagine how scary it is to wake up and see some person with no face underneath your bed." The teen reached for her boots, tied to an overhead branch by the laces, and began the struggle of putting them on while trying to maintain her balance. "Your voice is kinda high to be a guy. You must be a lady, right? If not, you have one girly voice. You must get picked on a lot by other people. Unless you're a lady. That's even more dangerous. Sleeping out here like you just did, you got balls of steel lady!"
If the person who lay beneath the tree was startled by the appearance of her new companion, they made no sign. Instead, they continued to lay there, not even looking up. "He normally is. But he is also a cat, so I can't expect too much really," they replied, watching as Tobias let out a tiny mrow as he awoke, his tail swished back and forth as he spotted the new person. "Yes Tobias, well done," they murmured, stroking his head with a gloved hand.
"It's an enchantment I paid through the nose for, but it is well worth it," came the reply to the next question, the person standing up and dusting themselves off, before flipping the hood back and pulling their hair free. It fell like a river of white and gold around her shoulders, pooling in the hood. The woman herself was a classical beauty, with high cheekbones, full lips, and piercing scarlet eyes, though it was marred by a few small scars, and a larger one that cut diagonally across her face. Most curious of all though, were her ears, those of a fox that twitched, listening. Those eyes studied Koume, a hand resting on her sword's hilt. "I feel no fear regarding a few bandits, child, but thank you for the compliment. I am Leliana, and you?" She asked, shifting her footing, in case the young woman in the tree fell.

"Good thing it works then. Woulda been really bad if you paid so much for something that didn't even work. Bad for you, that is. You've just been another sucker for some crooked mage. It's not really a bad business though, you gets lots of money without having to do much. 'Course you can start feeling guilty or even get arrested, but if someone is really that good they would never let themselves get taken in by the guards!" The Wolfskin rambled while glaring down at her boot. The laces were putting up more trouble than what they were worth. After multiple failed attempts to tie the laces, Koume tucked the loose strings into her boot.
She didn't know what to expect behind the hood. It certainly wasn't a very pretty woman who.. had ears like hers? They didn't look like hers though. The woman's looked softer and silkier, placed at the top of her rather than the dark ears at the side of her own head. Still, despite the differences, Koume couldn't help but get excited at the thought of coming a little closer to understanding her origins. Her tail began to wag a little faster but her eyes moved away from the woman's face, trying to hide any signs of emotion from her face.
"You should fear them. Even if you're really good with a sword and fighting and all, I learned that some Nohrians have no problem playing dirty. 'Course some Hoshidians are the same way, but we aren't there right now." A small blush tinted the girl's face and she glared down at the ground. Her feet stopped kicking, as she could feel her boots beginning to slide off from the movement, and looked at the lady. "My name is none of your business..." There was a brief moment of silence before she opened her mouth again, "..You can call me Kou..."
"Say lady, what are you anyways? I never met someone with ears like mine before. Are we the same? We have the same eye color, but your ears are different. Can you change with a rock too? I have a rock that helps me change into a really big creature. I use it to fight people off."
Leliana let the wolfskin ramble, an amused smile gracing her lips. It was enjoyable, or at least she thought so, to let someone else talk. Still she provided the occasional nod, enough to show she was genuinely listening to her newfound companion. Eventually though, she spoke again, careful not to interrupt Koume. "I have found that fear has its uses, but bandits are bandits. Deny them their fear that wish to cause, and they have very little left."
Leliana had caught the wagging tail, but didn't let it show, if for no other reason than to avoid embarrasing the tree-born wolfskin. "Nohrians do play dirty, it's true. But whomever said I could not play as dirty as them?" She asked, half joking. "I'm similar to you, but not quite the same. I am a kitsune, and whilst yes, I could transform with a stone, I do so no longer. I hope you don't have to fight people too often, it's very dangerous."
Good Fortune: At the start of every round, this unit may roll under their SKILL stat. If the check succeeds, then this unit recovers five health points.
"I don't see how fear can have uses. Fear makes you weak. It makes you hesitate and it can be the reason you or someone else gets killed." Koume gripped the branch and stared at her feet, eyebrows furrowed. What kind of dumb lady would see the power in fear? There was no power to be had. Fear was nothing but a stupid emotion that controlled what you did or didn't do. "Even though what you said about fear was pretty dumb, I think you were onto something about the bandits."
"I don't think someone can survive long by playing it straight. Not everyone is gonna listen to the rules, so what's the point of listening to something almost everybody ignores. It's dumb. They say it's a matter of honor or whatever. What good is stinky old honor if you're dead?" The teen had started kicking her feet again at the point. The boots became looser and looser until they were practically falling off. Koume pulled her left leg in and began to readjust her shoe before moving to the right leg.
"Kitsune? I though those were just legends the older Hoshidians would talk about. 'Course, I guess they stopped being legends for me when I heard about what the Kitsune people looked like.." It was debated whether Koume was a Kitsune the day she was born. They decided there would be no Kitsune in Nohr and that she must've been something more sinister. "If you're a Kitsune, then what am I? Do you know what I am lady?"
"Why don't you fight transformed anymore? It's amazing to fight when you're so powerful! You're bigger and stronger than everyone else. It's like you're this unstoppable force of strength!" There was a growing fire in Koume's eyes, the once soft and almost vulnerable look was replaced now with something akin to pride. Her ears had perked up and her tail swished to and fro excitedly. "I thought you were okay before, but you're actually dumb. I can't believe I asked you if you knew what I was. I must be getting as stupid as you. You're throwing away the chance to be so much more powerful than you are now. Why? Actually, I don't wanna know. It would probably be some lame answer anyways.." Koume collected herself and jumped from her branch. "I've been here for too long. See ya later lady."
Leliana had expected as much of a response, for she had given a similar one many years ago. Still,if she had a chance to correct a misconception now, all the better. "I thought like you once, many years ago. But I know better now. Many years ago, when I was younger and stupider, I saw no need for fear, and so I ignored it. And then, because of that stupid, arrogant decision, I came within an inch of my life. The scar on my face is a constant reminder of that. So yes, I would say fear has its uses. For had I been afraid, I would not have this scar." She smiled, and tapped the hilt of her weapon. "And if my enemies fear me, then it saves me having to kill them."
"Whilst I agree on some points, I must disagree on principle. Honour is more important than you know," she murmured, before looking up at Kou. "If you're no better than your foes, then you lose sight of who you are. Of why you fight. Such a thing..." she sighed, and started to stretch, letting her bones click gently. "Given that I'm standing here, and my father yet lives, I can fairly say that we are no mere legend," she chuckled, her ears flicking gently. "But you, are no Kitsune. I've met few of your kind, and were you to transform, I could ascertain it. You, my dear Kou, are a wolfskin."
And there it was, the crux of the matter. She watched as the young wolfskin leapt, unable to stop herself from darting forward to catch her. "I do not transform, because I am afraid. I have felt that power, the power that thrums in my veins. Power... corrupts. And I fear that corruption. I fear that if I gave myself access to that power, I would no longer be myself. I would not bemoan you for your choice, each must forge their own destiny. But this is mine."

"Let go of me you stupid lady! I didn't need help getting down! I'm not some kinda weak kid you know! Falling from a tree woulda been nothing! I've fought loads of people and animals alike! And I beat them all too! Some of them I even did without transforming, so don't underestimate me just cause I'm not a grown-up yet!" Koume kicked and thrashed about like a child throwing a tantrum, her face bright red with embarrassment.
Koume stopped for a moment. The woman was surprisingly calm despite all of the teen's talk and actions. Everything that was thrown at her was taking in stride. She answered all of her questions and only smiled patiently as she spoke. Heck, she even answered the question Koume was searching for year for! A part of her was happy to actually be able to speak to someone without them groaning about how annoying, a bigger part of her was excited for finally knowing what she was, but the rest of her was unsettled. Why was she so patient?
Someone like her could've never been someone like Koume. The lady was too patient and kind. Koume was short-tempted and was kind only when there was a reward to be had. Were all Kitsune like this? She had heard from the elders that they took great care of their appearance and were generally playful creatures. Though she wasn't all Kitsune, was she? Small hands began to clench then. That sounded all too familiar to her. Koume hated not really to say it, but maybe they were more alike than she cared to admit. After all, they did agree on a few things.
Power did corrupt. Koume knew this full well from the lowly bandits that tried to pick fights with her to King Garon himself. She wasn't dumb, she could understand that at least. The Wolfskin couldn't really blame the lady for being scared of corruption. It was a scary thought; to lose yourself in a power you can't control.. Not that she was scared of it or anything. Koume knew who she was every time she transformed. It was the lady's fault for being so weak as to believe she could lose herself to such an easily controlled force.
"You can put me down now lady.. You really didn't need to stick your neck out for me. I can take care of myself." The girl pouted, her ears turned down in embarrassment and her cheeks still tinted a faint pink.
Leliana raised an eyebrow as the young woman in her arms started to flail and trash in her arms, though she managed to keep her grip on the lightweight girl. She could almost understand her frustration, and better, she mused, for her to let it out than keep it bottled up inside. Even if it was a little childish. "It may have been nothing, or you could have landed poorly on a root, and struck your head. Better to land on something soft, eh?"
She cocked her head, noting the subtle shift in her young charge's expression. "Is something the matter?" She asked, before smiling gently. "I promise you, I have no hidden agendas," she said as she shifted her weight so Kou would be more comfortable. "I don't know how people have treated you in the past, but I'm not going to hurt you," she said, before nodding and placing the girl gently, resisting the urge to drop her, if for nothing more than a joke. Still...
"I'm sure you can," she replied as Tobias leapt from her shoulder onto Kou, licking her cheek as his tail wagged slowly back and forth.

"People treated me just fine in the past, and I'm not scared of you. You may have a sword but I can still turn into a big creature!" Koume tried to sound as confident as she did before, but her voice was faltering. Her hands brushed her clothes flat once she was back on the ground. Stupid lady.. Did she seriously believe that she made her feel afraid? Not a chance, ever! There was no way she would trust this woman no matter what she said. If it came to it, Koume would take the lady down in a heartbeat.
"I can! I wouldn't be alive if it was a lie!" As hard as she was trying to be taken seriously, it probably wasn't reading well considering the affectionate cat on her shoulder. Kou wanted to be mad at the cat but she couldn't. She'd never say it out loud, but the little thing was pretty cute. It took all of her strength not to get pluck him from her shoulder and give him little pets on the head. This must mean that she's matured a little bit, right?
"Your cat always this lovey towards people he has never met?"
Leliana nodded, her hands now open palm facing Koume, her sword long forgotten. Even if the young woman was not showing fear, she was certain there had been some form of mistreatment in the past, and for that, her blood boiled. "I know you can, I used to transform into a giant wolf."
Tobias had quickly grown bored of their conversation, instead choosing to use Koume as a nap spot, her shoulder forming the unofficial bed. Nuzzling her cheek, he purred, before seeming to drift off back to sleep. "No, very rarely is he like this. He's a good judge of character though, so I suppose that says something about you, eh?"

“Yeah yeah, I know. You gave me the speech on fearing power and whatever..” Koume had rolled her eyes and watched the little furball make itself comfortable on her shoulder. The woman’s next comment caused the teen’s cheeks burst into color once more.
“What does a cat know about other people’s character? He’s just a dumb old cat who probably cuddles up to anyone they find.” The harsh words matched the girl’s face, but her tail was slowly wagging just underneath her cloak. Her fingers made move to gently stroke underneath the cat’s chin, under the guise of pulling her hood free, before moving her hand back to her side. Like this dumb old thing could really sense the character she was. And even if it did, Koume didn’t need this orange fleabag to know there was something good about her. (Spoilers: Yes she did.)
“Where were you even heading to, lady? You’re pretty far from any real towns. Did ya get lost? Did ya follow your dumb cat all the way out here?”
Tobias almost seemed to raise an eyebrow at the comment on his age, flicking her face with his tail before returning to purring, and getting as many pets as he could. Whether Leliana caught the scratching of his chin, or not, she did not let it show, instead content to let out a whistle, a rumbling filling the surrounding area before a draft horse seemingly unearthed itself, shaking off a camouflaged cloak, even its casual stride thundering movements. "Enjoy your nap, Horus," she asked, before nodding at Koume. "I'm just... travelling at the moment. Not sure where I'm headed, but I'm not lost." Tobias let out a mrow at being called dumb, but made no other noise, too busy enjoying the pets.

The horse was definitely a surprise. Not that Koume let that show. The teen plucked the cat from her shoulder and carried it in her arms. Not because she wanted to hold him or anything. She was just getting annoyed at the weight he placed on her shoulder. No other reason! And she was definitely NOT giving him hidden pets underneath his chin or on his little tummy.
“Really? Nohr isn’t the best place to just travel. I mean, as long as you’re not staying in one place but even then that’s dangerous.” Koume’s voice didn’t hold the same edge it did before. Probably because most of her attention had been placed on the adorable stupid fleabag she was carrying. “You said you were a Kitsune, right? Kitsune are from Hoshido, so why are you here?”
Letting out a rumbling snort, Horus, and the heavy saddlebags on his flanks, shuddered as he stomped over to Leliana, nuzzling her till she relented, an apple appearing in her hand, which he dutifully dug into. He neighed, nuzzling her again till a second apple appeared in his mouth. The horse snorted happily, before yawning, trotting in a circle, and laying down, content.
Tobias, meanwhile, was having the time of his life. Bellyrubs, it seems were his favourite type of pats, and was deftly doing all he could to get more of them. Leliana watched her cat, a slight shake of the head in bemusement the only sign she gave. "Nohr is my home, as brutal as the king is. And I don't want to hear that coming from you, little miss," she replied, before nodding. "I am, and they are. But why I am here... that is not something I wish to share. Or will share, ever."
