Solace That is a foreign word for a soldier Only a monk can know it ... A good monk, that is
There were a few temples located within the watch of Kitsuki, some larger, and more well-off than others. However, this one was a humble temple, guarded by a blind, elderly monk with an emaciated body, resting himself against the pillars near the entrance.
Within, the strong scent of lavender incense wafted heavily in the air before a stoic, bronze statue. It was a small one, with an expressionless face except for a pair of shut eyes and an elongated head tilted forward in a prayerful stance.
Before the statue was a young fellow dressed in baggy clothing, adorned with a presumably heavy necklace of round, wooden orbs around his neck. His head was uncovered, revealing a gentle face of girlish quality, with hair grown long that it reached to the pit of his back. Hands were folded and head bowed, emulating the statue he sat before.
Between the two was the stick of lavender incense upon a small stand, already nearing the end of its life. Nevertheless, while it lasted, the scent marked the prolonged time of prayer.
No words were spoken, nor whisper passed, only the occasional, irreverent mumbling of the passerby.
This was probably the quietest place that Shizuka had ever visited in her entire life. Curiosity had really gotten to her. The temple had an air of serenity to it that brought an instant peace to the chaotic young warrior. It was nice to have a place like this so close to home. Yet, she really didn't visit it too often. Sometimes she and Ume might need a quick heal or something, and it wsd much easier to get her hands on a vulenary than a monk. That and she had learned a lot about caring for Ume's wounds on the ranch, so it just wasn't needed. Faith was something that wasn't really introduced to her otherwise.
She could see lone statues around the temple and the occasional person kneeling before them, but didn't really understand. It probably looked a little foolish of her to mimic the people around her, walking with her head bowed and her eyes to the ground. Unfortunately that's what landed her into trouble. Rather, the lap of somebody who had been before a statue she hasn't seen within a temple.

The scent of the incense was barely gone before the young monk felt a large, and rather heavy object land scros his lap. The effect was instantaneous: the monk's eyes shot open in surprise, both his shoulders and hands raised in the air, and his eyes flew down to meet eyes with the interrupting visitor...
A ditzy-looking girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and by the definition of appearances, a foreigner who wandered in here out of curiosity. For her to touch him was no affront, but wasn't this a little bit scandalous? Here was a woman who's attire was... a touch less modest than the normal garb, and she was lying across his lap, no less.
The shock of her sudden weight had passed, and now he was capable of feeling mildly upset of her intrusion.
"Excuse me," he whispered in a manner as to not disturb other monks in the vicinity, but that proved to be difficult with his growing temper. "I was in the middle of my meditation. I would appreciate it if you behave yourself?" Shizuka Yui
His quiet tone hadn't been much to calm Shizuka. If the monk was trying not to get the attention of everybody else, it was lost on Shizuka. The girl leaped from the person's lap with a loud shriek. Some monks had been undisturbed by the girl, simply lost in their own meditations enough not to pay her mind. A few others turned their heads to look.
The girl pulled herself from the person's lap, her body knocking over a bowl of burning incense to the ground where ash and incense spilled onto he floor. She ignored it and gave a long apologetic bow in front of them. "I'm sorry Miss Priestess. I wasn't watching where I was going. Everything here looked so pretty that I was just so lost in it all. I really should have had my eyes in front of me. Like even you're pretty here, but I guess you're like a priestess and it doesn't really matter how you look but actually appearance doesn't matter and I don't know what I'm going on about. But I've never been in a temple like this before. Everyone here is so focused, I didn't think they would really notice me walking by."

Those who knew the identity of the troubled young monk watched the scene carefully as he wiped his hand down his face roughly. He needed to compose himself before he would speak another word.
First thing's first. Clean up the mess. With quiet movements, the monk reached around and picked up the smoldering stick of incense, then ground the ember side into the floor with an emphatic motion.
Ah, good, that was helpful to the psyche. Next, he righted up the little bowl for the incense and brushed away the remaining ashes with his hand.
"I certainly hope that your curiosity of this place has been satiated," whispered the monk, "Nonetheless, we must not stay any longer and disturbed those who seek what they seek." He rose from his place and slid the bowl into his robe, "Please follow me out, wayfarer." Shortly after he spoke, he took up a staff leaned on a pillar next to them, then began plodding toward the exit of the temple, turning his head back to see if the woman would follow after him.
If not, well, the other monks will have to deal with her. Shizuka Yui
All Shizuka could do was tilt her head in confusion at the actions of this person. They hadn't bothered to speak to her while they just cleaned up her mess. "Umm.." she uttered, not quite sure what she could do to help. It felt a bit bad to have them cleaning up after her mess. She was capable of doing it on her own. Then she saw them using her hand with no worries of getting burnt by what was left. Shizuka kind of lost herself in the movements by the time they spoke once again.
"Oh!" She jumped. "Yes, of course." She started to follow the monk out. She wasn't too surprised when a staff was grabbed. That's the most she knew about the people in temples. It was an art that did fascinate her, especially after her run in with Grant. But it's purpose here, she wondered. "Is that for praying in the temple? Does it help you channel spirits? Is that how healing works?" She suddenly gasped in the thought of that being how the staffs got charged. But she didn't exactly picture Grant to be a spiritual person either.

"Er..." the monk mumbled as he began to hold his staff a little tighter toward himself, "Well... my staff is always with me in case I find a someone who is sick, injured, or weary. It is a duty of a monk to help nurse others back to health."
The next question he didn't know the answer to, and he scratched his head for a moment while he was trying to come up with an answer. The two of them cleared the temple gate and began to walk down the street.
Oh! This sounds plausible.
"The merciful gods grant me the power at the temple to use my staff," he continued, "I would suppose my regular visits to the temple rejuvenate me so I may continue healing those in need." He glanced back at her and smiled, "Does that help?" Shizuka Yui
Blindly, she followed the monk down the street. Her movements were maybe a bit overzealous as she nodded her head at Atushi's words almost like she knew exactly what he was talking about. "Yeah that makes a lot of sense," she grinned widely. There was no part of her that actually understood any of this. Temple stuff. Spiritual stuff. It was all over her head. And it didn't sound as cool as what she had imagined. No... there was something cool about it. The ability to heal other people was something Shizuka admired. "That's almost like Grant..." she muttered. But he never said anything about being a monk. Not that she knew the man very long. Still, that fleeing meeting left an impact on the impressionable girl. And if Grant could learn how to heal, then she should have been able to as well. "So does that mean if I pray at the temple, I can learn how to heal? Ume and I can't be around all the time, but I think it would be helpful if I could heal him if he gets hurt." Poor Ume was the one that took most of the damage. "Does it work on animals?"

It seems she had met someone who was also capable of clerical duties, and now explaining this suddenly became even more complicated. Atsushi’s fingers fidgeted on his staff as he searched for some form of explanation.
Aaah.
“You... could... try?” he drawled, “It certainly works on animals, but... as far as your discipline, it will need to be one thing or the other. If you are bred to fight, you must fight, and if you must heal, you must heal. There are those who are capable of both, but they are few and far between.” He hung his head down, “... A-admittedly, I’ve never met someone who could do both. I am still new to my discipline.” Shizuka Yui
It was rare to do both? That made her encounter with Grant even more special then. "To be quite honest. I don't really think I'm bred to fight. I might be trained really well with my naginata but I really don't like the thought of hurting other people for no reason." The girl blushed in embarrassment as though she just admitted some secret. "I.. I just don't.. think fighting a war is the right thing to do sometimes." She felt like she, as a soldier was digging herself in an even deeper hole. The girl knocked on her head a few times and made a face. "I enjoy what I do, of course. Ume and I are a great team of scouts. Nothing gets past me! So, why don't you try both? I met someone who did both and I want to learn too." Maybe it was fate to stumble in here today.

Atsushi considered what she spoke carefully. She was a soldier of Hoshido?
A soldier.
The monk remained silent at her words as a sudden rush of hostility surged through his being. He stopped in his tracks, gripping his hands tightly around his staff. Things that he had surpressed for the longest time were beginning to surface.
“Sh...” he spoke through grit teeth, “... Shizuka-san... you said you were a scout... tell me, have you... have you ever heard of the town of the Akamizu?” Shizuka Yui
