Set one year before current events. Starring Mitsuko Nakajima and Shizuka Yui Shirasagi-Hoshido. Early morning.
Every two years an event was held in the Hoshidan capital involving certain ' Elite' units. These where academy cadets from all over the country. The flowers of the youth of the Samurai upper class who where more than likely to fill in important roles in the upcoming war which could re-ignite any day now.
The organizers of this event promoted a high state of readiness amongst these reservist whom where mostly teenagers. The oldest where about to graduate and where fresh out of their twenties at most.
The regular soldiers around where the ones responsible for setting up the tents and temporary stables meant to house all of the participant mounts. Numerous dummy targets where spread on the prairies outside of Shirasagi in strategic locations away from the eyes of its population.
All sort of events where scheduled from flight formations to small scale war games involving mostly the Sky Knight Corps. A friendly rivalry was instated into these young and women from an early age since competitiveness brought a higher performance from everyone involved, in most cases.
For Senior cadet Mitsuko Nakajima this event was a waste of time and resources. Of course they held the advantage over any other Sky knight unit since they always practiced on these same grounds.
" Great. Now we have to put on a show for everyone else." Instead of being with the rest of the class the ebon haired young Samurai spent her time tending to her black Pegasus. Just like anyone else from her academy she donned the Dou and Kusazuri in the white and red colors of the Shirasagi military district. Just for the sake of their own protection they where wearing a bit more armor than usual to protect them from the inevitable accidents that would ensue.
Awestruck! That was the only way to describe Shizuka at this moment. Shirasagi was nothing like the quaint town that she called home at all. It was so full of life. So full of people! The young rider felt like she was going to faint from excitement. Even now, her head felt like it was in the clouds and she hadn't even gotten on Ume yet.
The pair of them walked between all of the tents. Ume trailed right at her side to the point where it was difficult to determine just who had been leading who. It wasn't until they wanted to go separate ways a power struggle between the two of them became apparent. Shizuka pulled at Ume's reigns so they could go watch the competition practice their routines while Ume pulled at Shizuka in the direction of some merchant stalls. The two locked eyes with one another, until Ume followed Shizuka to the training grounds.
It was like a whole new world. People here wore matching outfits to showcase their districts and units. Shizuka and Ume didn't have matching armor or any of that fancy stuff the capital units might have had. It wasn't something that she would let bother her. Appearances weren't always important. It meant nothing when it came to the bond between a rider and their pegasus. Shizuka and Ume had an unmatched symmetry when they actually tried to work together. It came from growing up with one another.
And then she found herself lost in all of this. There was too much going on. Her eyes darted around to all the people and all the events. Shizuka wasn't quite sure where to go from here. "Uhh.." The sound escaped from her and she swayed on her heels while she debated her next course of action. It'd be best to ask! "Hey!" She called to a random person. She had been one of those people in uniforms. With her black pegasus, Shizuka assumed that she too would be taking part in all of this. "Hi, I'm kind of lost. Ume and I are here to.. show off our stuff, but I'm not too sure where to begin."
" Hmm ... " Mitsuko heard someone calling up from behind so she turned around to face this apparently blonde young girl. She looked like a kid straight off school and yet she had her own Pegasus. How cute, she thought not hiding a condescending chuckle.
" The exhibitions start in about an hour. Are you with one of the teams from out of town? you'd be better off talking to your instructor. " Mitsuko was really only here to take part in the maneuvers towards the middle of the event so she could care less about the showing off bits. She was here to fight and defend her academy honor in a mock battle against the other districts. These where team tactics that they had spent a good portion of the year preparing for.
" Well for starters you might want to leave your mount here at the stable before the leave you without room." Everyone was about to start showing up really soon and since they where expecting teams from all over Hoshido things where going to get crowded really soon.
Huh? There was a visible look of confusion on the girls face. The woman she talked to seemed full of information. It was obvious that she knew what she was doing, but Shizuka didn't entirely understand it. "Instructor?" She knew that there were teachers here, but that wasn't something Shizuka and Ume had. At least not in terms of flying together. She stood on her toes and tried to scan the crowd of people. Maybe one of her teachers from the dojo came, though it wasn't exactly the kind of stuff they taught. "Like for flying? Cause Ume and I don't have one."
The stables stood tall beside her. So many pegasai were penned up. Now that she thought about it, so few riders were actually out with their companions. "I couldn't just leave Ume in a pen here. " He was never even locked up at home. She glanced at her steed with a sad look. It made her a bit uncomfortable to be separated from him. She pat him on his forehead and spoke softly to him, "you okay staying here?" He gave a gentle huff and playfully tugged at her hair. "It won't be for long. Just wait for me to call. You'll hear me call you. You always do." Until the event began, Ume would stay.
" No. For combat maneuvers. " Flying was one of the fundamentals for the Sky knight corp for obvious reason but most of their training involved strategies, logistics and organization during wartime conditions. All of the instructors where field officers with tons of experience fighting the enemy. These girls where trained on all aspects of warfare and had to be able to fend off the danger in and out of their mounts. The qualification process was rigorous and unforgiven, meant to sift out those who lacked the mental and physical fortitude necessary to make the cut.
" You are not with any academies, are you?" The more this girl spoke the more obvious it was she was some kind of outsider. even if she had shown up with a Pegasus in tow chances where she wasn't even registered to take part in the event. The extra armor and protection the seniors wore was more than anything to protect them once the war games began. Even if they where going to use blunt practice weapons the probability of suffering an injury where quite real. Every year a certain number of cadets died during practice but that was part of the whole process. Dying on the job was part of the bargain.
"Oh combat?" Shizuka looked over to Ume where her training naginata was holstered to his side. "Yeah I got a teacher for that. They're not here though. They stayed back at the dojo in Kitsuki, but I'm pretty sure they're invited." Though the fighting style taht Shizuka was talking about was for an unmounted fighter. Most of the fighting she had done on top of Ume was learned on her own with practice. "I don't think the dojos count as an official academy though. Is that normal to be in an academy? Ume and I are pretty much self taught. I heard that this was going on and I was hoping that we'd be able to compete and show our stuff. We used to run all sorts of obstacles together back on the ranch with a few of the other farmhands and fliers." Sure it was no big elaborate course that an academy could set up, but Shizuka was willing to say that it was just as difficult. Her family had been doing this for generations. Heck, according to her grandpa, the Yui family practically invented pegasus riding. Of course Shizuka believed him, she knew no better flier than her grandfather.
