Carried by gossiping merchants, whispered by those afraid of Nohr, and bragged about by mean-spirited soldiers, news of Ethan's capture had spread fast. Days later, it seemed all of Hoshido and parts of Nohr had known. It was a moral booster for Nohr. Their mistake, their deserter had been brought in. Of course, Campbell was praised as a hero while Ethan's true captor went forgotten.
At times, an execution date was added to Ethan's fate. Some placed it in threatening days, others after years in crushing prisons, less savory folk said the wanderer was already dead. It didn't matter for Hoshidans. Garron had him now. That was a fate worse than death. However, there were always fairy-men willing to cross Styx for some poor soul.
Kitsuki was host to a very select sort of people. Most wore katanas at their hip, wide brimmed hats shielded them from the beating sun. Others, coming from all over the continent, carried bags filled with useless trinkets. They wasted money, even during a war. Beyond the samurai, behind the tourists, and sealed away in a forgotten tavern, sat Clayton Witting.
The lumbering man, whose stature discouraged most people from talking to him, had once been a part of Hoshido's military. They counted him among the ghosts haunting Fort Jinya. Desertion, fueled by devastating defeat, chased the once proud soldier into a bottle. He'd been there ever since. He was known to have intricate knowledge of the fort, once being a trusted guard that patrolled along hidden passages for spies.
When paid enough, or given a sufficient sob story, Clayton had been willing to break into the fort to rescue the unlucky few that found themselves in Nohr's grimy claws. That's what brought you here today. Perhaps out of desperation, or strategic planning, you seek an audience with a broken man.
The unkempt tavern smelled of mildew. Cheap, paper lanterns sat on each table. Their uneven glow lent tired light to the angular room. Despite the inn's ratty look, tourists still seem drawn to it. They gawk at pathetic paintings, listen to the stories of washed out men, and drink the water-downed saki that the overweight barkeep pushed.
Clayton existed in his own, drowsy corner. The dizzy look in his eyes spoke of inebriation. He choked an empty glass. A hodgepodge of brown shades formed his simple outfit. His sword waited by thick boots. Its sheath seemed as damage as him. The man's head stood nearly shaved, with a single bar of hair bisecting it.

What a filthy place... but it was easy to believe why that old washout would stay in a rotten place like this. Dirt with dirt mixed.
Regardless, this was the only fellow Mai could turn to. Extensive, sleepless research and intel-gathering by word of mouth led her and her company to this pigsty for this particular man. Was he really all that people said he was?
Mai herself was of a haggard appearance due to her state of worry, and deliriousness was not far behind her. Sleep brought nightmares of Ethan either hung, burned or on the chopping block, and being alone caused her to blame herself extensively in incoherent mumbles.
However, the fact she was here meant she was not ready to give up.
The innkeeper proceeded forth into the ramshackle inn and proceeded to scan the room with her tired eyes. Even with all the knowledge she had accumulated, she lacked any idea of his appearance.
The morning that Ethan had been captured, Raziel had thought little of the man waking up in the early hours and walking out on his own. The dragon took last watch and tended to what was left of the flickering fire. Sometimes, people just needed the time on their own. He understood that too well. People like Mai could be a little much to handle from time to time. When she too left camp with her bundle of goodies for a picnic, Raziel thought to stop her and give the man his time alone. Instead, he had pointed the way out for her. The dragon sat at the camp, tending to whatever had been left behind and extinguished the nights fire while the others had been out.
He regretted that morning.
There had only been rumors to go off of. People in the towns talked. Guards bragged. Raziel could only stand from afar and listen to what people had to say. Ethan was gone. Captured. His friend was bound by chains to a life he wanted no part of. Raziel had just let it happen. He wouldn't let Mai rush into the fort to save him. With their numbers, Mai would end up with the same fate as Ethan. It would be a losing battle. Even with the new ally they had picked up.
He knew very little about this woman. Mai had been with her when Raziel found them. The three of them stood no chance. Three people, taking a fort. It would be impossible to do blindly.
Mai had caught name of the man first. Clayton Whitting. A man who had known the forts of Hoshido, inside and out. Raziel followed his companion into this inn. He glanced at the battle-worn soldier. A tinge of guilt rested in his chest. This man knew hardship. This favor wouldn't come easily from him. But Raziel was ready to give what he needed in order to get help for his friend.
"What." The giant sipped from his empty glass. A long, frustrated sigh followed the glass to the wall. "Do you want? You know what? Don't bother. Not interested."
His thick arm rose up. Slurred words said "Barkeep! Another. In fact, leave the bottle."
The man behind the counter flashed a quick glare towards the drunk man. He mumbled insults before bringing a fresh bottle and new glass.
"You break this one and I throw your ass out. Understand?" "Oh god forbid." Clayton's hands shot up. "That I don't get anymore of your water-downed piss." "Watch your mouth." "Or what?" The failed warden stood up. "What are you going to do?"

Akemi was reluctant to follow Mai into these run down parts of town. They tracked someone who could potentially help them get into the fort without alerting the guides but hey found a broken husk of a man, drinking his life away in a dark corner.
The green haired kimono wearing girl turned to Mai, whispering into her ear." Are you sure that's the guy we're looking for? He seems like a bum to me. if information is what we want out of him we should tie him up and start breaking his fingers one at a time to make him talk. " Akemi certainly despised having to come to a place like this only to be condescendingly shooed away by some drunkard.

Mai watched the large man react. So he was the one they were looking for.
Good. Now she just had to win his empathy.
"Mr. Witting," she said with a somber tone. She approached the man with a smile on her face, "... I thought I recognized you. I'm not so sure you would for me..." She placed a hand on her chest, "I am Mai Watanabe, Innkeeper of Raven's Rest. You've been through my inn before multiple times on your way to and from Fort Jinya." Her torso bowed toward him, "... We lauded you as a hero in our tavern."
Brown eyes held longing hope. Contempt replaced it. Clayton looked to the clean glass, tossing it over shoulder before drinking straight from the bottle.
"Can't say I remember." He muttered. "That's another life ago, back when the fort and my name meant something. Look lady, whoever you are, I'm tired. Probably drunk." The man took another swig. "And should be getting back to my oh so prestigious accommodations. So whatever you have to say, say it quick."

The woman looked on without flinching as the man tossed the glass over his shoulder. She's dealt with this behavior before.
"Alright," Mai nodded, "I'll get straight to the point then... I need you... desperately. There is a man in the fort who wants nothing to do with Nohr anymore. They won't leave him alone and want him dead." Her brow furrowed deeply as she felt her chest began to tighten, "... I... I don't know how much you would care, but I do. I... we..." she glanced at Raziel, "... care about him very much... and we're willing to pay every gold piece in our pockets just so we can get him back... so..." Her eyes began to well up and her lips began to frown, "... Clayton... you're... you're our only hope to help our friend."
Her head dipped down into her sleeves as she wept softly.

Akemi had no intention whatsoever of wasting her breath trying to convince some drunk has been. had it been up to her she would have left him to rot on that dark corner. She turned to the darker skinned fellow that had accompanied them and was dressed like a belly dancer.
" Is he a friend of yours? " Akemi might have recognized Clayton as being part of the garrison at Fort Jinya but that outburst from earlier really set the tone since she'd almost been hit by that flying glass.
"Lady, what's one more dead guy to the fort? Countless others have lost their lives their already." He scoffed, letting his rancid breath douse those around him. "One more ghost means nothing. I've risked my skin more than enough times for the ungrateful pricks captured by Nohr. Far as I'm concerned, they're all the same, They claim a banner, but back down when push comes to shove."
Clayton lumbered through a hall, barely fitting between its archway. "So what? I help your little friend out? He runs away and I'm left with a handful of money. Not worth it."
The large man stopped at his door, fumbling with his keys.

Mai looked up from her sleeves and grit her teeth at his heartless words. "This isn't some small thing, Clayton!" She chased after the man and grabbed the man by his wrist, "This friend of mine is a man from the Ice Tribe, the persecuted people of King Garon. He isn't some man of no reputation..." she gripped his arm tightly, "... he's a man who caused ripples across Nohr. He's inspired many others to take up their things and seek greener pastures!"
Her brow furrowed as her voice became steadily more passionate, "... and you would let a symbol of hope be surrendered a monster, ne? You would rather sit in a drunken stupor until Nohrians come knocking on your door? I'm telling you right now, if that man dies in that place, the boldness of the Nohrians will increase, and they will go to every doorstep and find more defectors to teach the same lesson to. Do you want that, Mr. Whitting?!" EthanRazielAkemi

The man ripped his wrist away. Drunken eyes steadied as rage filled them. His back straightened, lending greater height to the giant in front of her.
"Touch me again and I bash your head against this wall here. Then I take your scantly-clad friend here and rip his skull clean from his face."
He looked back to the door, pounding it open. Splintered wood, along with its busted lock, sprinkled the floor of his filthy room.
"Your friend is that little Ice Tribe kid huh? Next time start with that. I can give a shit about his little crusade. You save him now and they get him another time." He stumbled into the room before dropping on his borrowed bed. It whined at his weight. "But I'm not gonna be part of the reason. You want help? Fine. But it's going to cost you. I don't want money. You run an inn right? You serve saki? How much are you willing to give?"

Mai stared boldly back into the eyes of the large man. Was she afraid? Only that he wouldn't agree to her proposal. His threats felt empty to her in the face of the danger she was willing to undertake for Ethan's sake.
The woman followed him into his room and folded her arms.
Ah yes... he was a drinker after all... and a man. May as well work with his desires.
"Do you really want to stop at sake, Clayton?" she smirked, "For this favor, should we both survive it, I am willing to give you your own luxury room with your own supply of sake gourds to guzzle down. In the future, I seek to open inns everywhere I can. Imagine that you can soak in the co-ed hot spring in Izumo with young women serving you while sipping the best sake in town." Her head tilted upward with a haughty look on her face, "... A worthy investment, ne? Instead of rotting here in a derelict inn like this one? I'm a very ambitious woman, you know." EthanRazielAkemi
Visible confusion spread across the man's stubble-ridden face. She pronounced 'saki' in a strange way. A shake of the head, followed by an eye-roll, ignored her words. It was the promise of hot springs and booze that drew him in. "Ambitious indeed." The failed warden said. "Fine. You want help? You get it. I'll tell you every thing you need to know lady, and then some. However, if you're expecting me to waltz back into the fort, you're nuts. They have your little friend, they'll have other guards. The place will be packed with Nohr scum."
His head rested back against the pillow.
"Fortunately for you, I know that place better than the make of saKI. And also fortunate for you, I take cheap drinks."

The dragon looked down to the young traveler. This was the first the two of them had talked. Her question hadn't been the most clear. He looked to the man who sat at the table. In the moment Clayton spoke harshly to Mai, Raziel instinctively took a few steps towards the two in case he would be needed to jump in and protect her. Any threats and behavior the man made towards him were brushed aside. Raziel took a few steps to follow Mai as the two entered the room. It was probably a better idea to be speaking of this in private.
“Him?” Raziel nodded in the direction the witch and man had gone. “This is the first I have seen him. If it is Ethan you meant to ask about, we're acquaintances.”
