Fila was perhaps slightly ashamed of how good it felt to be back among these crowds, after everything she had done to get away from them. Recently, the Madame had made her the offer of signing on as one of the mercenaries attached to the tavern at MAdame's disposal. It would be a way to move up in the world, and also vastly reduce the amount of stress over keeping food on the table. A new chapter in her life.
However, Fila still had some loose ends to tie up first. Old favors to less reputable sorts. Scum of the earth they may be, but they helped her in good faith, and she never would've gotten to where she was now without owing them the courtesy of one more job. Not that she wasn't charging for it, but with her increasing visibility it was a bit risky to take on these sorts of jobs. That, and Nohr was starting to clamp down on smuggling as the war wore on. One last job, and then Fila was free to pretend she was that better person that both Kyverian and the Madame seemed to think she was. They were wrong, but Fila liked them well enough to maintain the facade.
The smugglers had needed a mage to impersonate a Dark Knight officer, which Fila was able to do quite easily. She hadn't even needed to prove her ability to use a tome, but someone with her talent in... disguise helped ensure the operation ran smoothly. At this point though, they were well past the risky bits. It was just a matter of prepping the cargo for overland shipment and dividing it amongst the transports. Fila had changed out of most of the stolen officer's armor by this point, though she was still wearing enough to conceal her identity. Only the boss technically knew who she was, but some of the workers might be able to guess... She certainly recognized them, whether she wanted to or not. An excellent memory was as much a curse as a blessing sometimes.
She'd be glad to see this done.

Theft. A terrible theft, at that. A response team was hastefully put together in order to find the brigands that had managed to fool a couple of grunts into handing over the valuables of Nohr's nobility. Too many aristrocrats had stake in those valuables to let them get away. But, they couldn't send the best that they had to offer. Unfortunately, second best was the most they could send after them. The risk of Fila and her band's theft warranted a heavy response. Many of Marcarth's idle guards have been mobilized to find the culprits and to bring them to swift justice.
The alarm bells ring out, the garrison expelling soldiers to find them before they get too far. Kyverian and several captains split the garrison up into several search parties, all with the expressed order to find the thieves and to bring them to justice. The Nohrian Captain Kyverian's gaze remained cold as the blade he kept by his hip, rounding up several soldiers of varying capacities. Two heavy infantry, two bowman, and three other front liners to fight with him as they go. The city prepares itself to lockdown, to ensure that no cargo comes in or out without scrutiny.
They knew the city would go into lockdown, but Fila was started to suspect they didn't understand what that really meant. There had already been a few deaths, both of theirs and some unfortunate guardsmen who had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one Fila recognized, and no one would recognize her. Despite that, she could practically feel the Crown breathing down her neck. She knew her cohorts could as well, even Pav, the orchestrator of this mess, was starting to get on edge.
They weren't trying to get out of the city though; all the buyers were here. They just needed to get to a safe house, a space within the walls. They had at least made it into the slums, their home turf. Fila could still feel the beating heart, even after all the time away from it. A part of her would always exist here.
She shook her head, banishing such thoughts. Introspection could wait until she was safely away with her cut of the money.

So far, the panicking masses have no choice but to pile at the gate, before their belongings are consistently searched through. Although Fila and her cohorts weren't leaving, the Nohr army couldn't risk that chance. But, the army themselves made one error that they seemed to not understand. No thief would dare come near the royal family, bulking the majority of their best and brightest there. No thief would dare to hide out in the many villas of the noble and royal class. Soon enough, Kyverian gradually pieces things together.
"Halt!" The captain shouts to his subordinates, "We're searching everywhere a thief wouldn't be. The more time we spend here, the less time they have until they can escape." His attention soon diverts towards the slums. However, it'd still be quite some time before he and his squad would arrive there.
Unfortunately for Fila, it seemed her and her cohorts came across one of the aggressive patrols that were just making a rounds. One of the soldiers takes a peek upon them, taking a moment to register the fact that they looked somewhat out of place compared to the rest of the slums. The captain leading halts, the entire patrol halts. There's an exchange of whispers as they all collectively stare in the direction of the gang.
Fila groans as they spot the patrol, before all hell breaks loose. Pav have given the crew standing instructions to jump any patrols of equal or smaller size while they were going through the slums, and his veteran crew of outlaws moved like a well-oiled machine despite their rough-and-tumble nature. Bows were brought up and a vollet was fired as the frontliners moved to the front. Pav, a sniper by trade, stayed back with Fila and the cargo. Fila, for her part, sent a bolt of dark mist shearing through the support beams for a ramshackle balcony above the patrol, sending a large amount of wreckage crashing down on them. She didn't expect it to do more much than distract, but every edge was needed against trained soldiers.

Before the patrol could react, Fila and her gang weren't wasting time. The sudden attack took the soldiers by surprise, several of them hit by the falling wreckage, others pinned down as a result. The patrol, however, soon decides to strike back. A bolt of black magic comes soaring through the air, grazing the wagon, as the other armed fighters proceed to shout orders and rally the attention of what was nearby. But for now, they were cut off from their frontal advance. Unfortunately for Fila, Kyverian's patrol heard the resulting crash. Who knew what other patrols were nearby? But one thing was definitely certain for the captain: Sooner or later, he'd confront those behind the theft of the treasures kept well guarded. "We move!" His voice rang out, soldiers marching with haste as the peasant folk do their best to stay out of the way of the resulting chaos. The fated encounter was well on its way, it was only a matter of time before they thieves were caught.
Fila yelps, dodging the black bolt of magic as she helps wheel the cart back. The hirelings charge the lines, desperate to try and silence the soldiers before they have time to organize themselves into a proper formation. That was really the only chance this bunch had against trained-soldiers. The archers moved up as well, having a harder time picking targets in the chaos.
Far in the back, forgotten, Fila and Pav share a meaningful look. Once they're sure everyone is distracted, they quietly stow their weapons, pick up the cart, and wheel it away down the path. "You know we'll have to find a new safehouse for this, right? No chance at least one of your boys doesn't talk." Pav rolls his eyes in response, jerking his head towards a branching path. Fila takes the direction, they two of them managing to move the cart with some difficult.
"Of course." Pav replies. "You think I told that bunch where everything was? They're good thieves, but not good businessmen. This is more convenient for both of us."
Fila hums in thought, before adding "Just so long as I don't die off next for the sake of your cut, Pav."

The clashing battle wasn't going to go so well for the thieves, unfortunately. Even if a majority of the patrol was busy trying to recover from the scaffolding collapsing on them, the well-trained soldiers were well armed in skill and weaponry. But, they'd at least keep the guards busy enough for Pav and Fila to divert course.
The Nohrian captain rushes to the commotion, making his way down the path as urchins emerge to stall their arrival, begging for alms and food to survive the harsh winter. But there'd be none to give, as the people that blockade the way are roughly shoved aside. Kyverian leads the ground down another passage way, taking note of the brawl of the soldiers against the thieves. But more importantly, a cart that was steadily getting away. "Aid those soldiers! Russel, with me!" The archer nods, as the frontlinesmen, the infantry, and the other bowman rush to flank the thieves to apprehend them. Kyverian and Russel, on the other hand, charge after the wagon that was being carted away.
"Russel! Slow them down!" The order is given as Kyverian's iron sword is drawn, rushing after the Archer that nocks an arrow through the bow and takes aim. Only a single arrow is fired at the cart, as Russel hurries behind the speeding Captain to ensure he isn't left behind.
Fila suppresses a groan as reinforcements arrive. They were going to have to abandon the cart at this rate, the hired thugs wouldn't last nearly as long as they needed to be safely away. Pav seemed to realize this as well, and without any communication the pair prepared to abscond with as much loot as they could carry, when...
'Wait, is that Kyverian?!' Fila thought in shock as an arrow thudded into the cart. Unbelievable. Just as she was about to finally be able to make a truely fresh start without any strings attached, the one person who could and would bring it all crashing down arrived to oppose her. This was... a problem. If she showed any hesitation in killing him, he would realize it was her. If she killed him, she would be sad. What was she to do?
The memory of her brush with the Nohrian 'justice' system, and the confused look from Pav solidified her decision. With a swing of her arm she sent a bolt of dark magic at Kyverian while the other hand quickly stuffed several of the smaller boxes of jewels into the stolen officer's coat.

The rushing Kyverian was sure to be seen as a threat, Even he knew that his ability to enter the free would make him a likely target. But, unlike the Samurai of Hoshido, Kyverian knew when he needed to divert course instead of bravely charging into an untimely death. Right as the projectile is launched his way, Kyverian makes a last second pivot behind cover, right as bolt of dark magic grazes his right arm. "Agh! Magic!" The captain grunted aloud, Russel knew who he needed to target next at that response.
The silent Nohrian archer pauses his charge, only to take an aim at Fila this time around. Pav is ignored, in favor of putting the pressure onto Fila to allow Kyverian the opportunity to close the distance. Two arrows were fired this time, one that was shot with aim, as the second one was barely given half as much time of aiming to be fired.
Fila snaps on of the larger boxes up, catching one arrow on the container of wood and compacted valuables before flinging it at Kyverian. She dives to side of the second, cursing as jewels scatter across the floor.
Pav takes careful aim at the approaching swordsman, firing twice in rapid succession. Unlike Fila, he was a trained Nohrian sniper, albeit a deserter. His aim was better even than hers.
She was quite glad he wasn't abandoning her. Especially since what she was about to do would probably make him a little grumpy. She conjures a bolt of magic once more, only to divert it into the cart. A blast of shrapnel made form splinters, jewels, and metal blasts the general area of Kyverian, while Fila sends an arcing bolt of magic at him through the confusion on her backswing.
Once that was done, she and Pav grab on less small case each, then bolt around the next corner to escape the archer.

Kyverian barely peeked around the corner when the chest was thrown his way, slamming down at the wall as he ducks behind it. Russel is also kept at bay, as Pav's arrows keep the two behind cover to avoid being struck. Kyv and Russel share a moment of intense staring to strategize, waiting until after Fila 's bolt had done its damage to the cart. The raining of jewelry and gold draws out the desperate urchins that clamor for the loot, forcing Kyverian and Russel to shove through them in order to continue the pursuit.
"Russel! Move!" The silent archer nods, as the two make their way on over. Their approach is anything less than slow, as the two pass through trying to desperately figure out if the two had split up or not. Eventually, Kyverian And Russel split up, while Kyverian went left, Russel went right. They couldn't give up the chase just yet.
Pav and Fila had not split up, neither wanting to risk facing down the Nohrian guards in by themselves. They were both consummate cowards after all, and for the moment there was safety in numbers. Besides that, Pav had with him perhaps the only person with both a strong sense of loyalty and a dearth of any other morals. That was not something he wanted to part from lightly. Fila just wanted to not go to jail again. It had been a horrific experience she still had nightmares of, and getting out had been the third biggest challenge of her life to date.
The ducked and weaved through the slums, knowing the terrain far better than their higher-blooded pursuers. People also recognized Pav, and gave him free passage in a way the city guard likely didn't. Pickpockets suffused this area after all, and two distracted guardsmen would be seen as easy marks, only increasing the press of people around them. They weren't exactly well liked either, and more than a few people with far too much of some confidence of arrogance and alcohol would challenge them.
It was too early for them to relax yet, but Pav and Fila were both confident they could get away. They were making their way to a safe house near the flooded area of the slums. It was one of the worst places to live, but an excellent place to smuggle things out by boat. Even if it was the obvious place to run to, it was still a crumbling labyrinth to anyone who hadn't grown up there like Pav. Though she hadn't technically grown in the river slums like Pav, her memory and the pressing need to find escape routes had given her an edge that let her keep up with Pav.
Fila liked Pav, as a friend, then a lover, then a friend when that fell through. It hadn;t been the healthiest relationship, but he had been the one who had helped lift her out of the vicious cycle of exploitative odd jobs that had dominated her life for the first few years in Marcarth. That was why she felt she had to repay the favor by agreeing to be hired for this job, after all.

Despite the split up, Russel had seemed to have an easier time navigating his way around. Or at the very least, Kyverian assumed to be the case. The captain was met with barricade after barricade. Just when it seemed like he'd found them, pickpockets and drunkards blocked the way. There was no point in expending energy in fighting them, not when he needed to chase the thieves down and battle them, most likely. The constant obstruction and detours bought Fila plenty of time to reach their destination. However, before they could relax, a familiar presence makes itself known.
The silent archer Russel emerges from the shadows, swerving around the corner of the building to take a snapshot at Pav's ankle. So far, it seemed only Russel had found them, the only person that spoke less than Kyverian was now preventing their departure. Though, it seemed doubtless that Kyverian was going to catch up. He just needed to get through a few more obstructions before reaching them. Not too soon after the first shot, Russel readies the second arrow for Fila's arm, getting ready to hinder her ability to grab her tome.
Pav yelps as the arrow hits him in the ankle, collapsing on the ground behind the cover of a pile of detritus. Fila darts behind another pile, the arrow nicking her arm but not managing to get through the reinforced sleeves. The metal there wasn't really enough to stop a direct hit, but it would deal with a few glancing blows. She and Pav nod to each other, as pav kneels upright and fires his bow at Russel's center of mass while Fila flings a bolt of magic at the supports holding the building near Russel above water.
The blast sheers through them, causing the small hut and the walkway around it to collapse into the river.
