As much as Akemi whished for a relatively painless execution it seemed her captors had other plans for her in store. Once everyday she would be walked out of her damp dungeon cell to be interrogated by that sadistic blonde cavalier. These people did try several diverse methods of torture for her from whipping to waterboarding but Akemi had been trained in how to resist torture just like most Hoshidan soldiers did.
The only information she shared with them was her own name, birthdate and unit number and they wouldn't get anymore of that no matter how hard they tried. Every time Akemi was taken back to her cell a medic would give her some slight first aid just to keep her alive but not fully recover. No one would benefit if she died there and everyday she could feel herself tempted to crack under pressure.
' I ... I wont resist another day of this.' No one knew the limits of her own endurance better than Akemi herself. Her conditioning to resist torture had limits and that Cavalier was catching up and had begun to come up with more ingenious methods to make her talk. She'd seen earlier one of the doctors sprinkle something into her food so there was no denying it was a drug of sorts.
Just as the doctor attempted to change her dressings the green haired oni took the scalpel out of his hands, getting behind the man and holding him up with the knife against his neck.
" Nice and easy now. if you make a wrong move i'll stab you in the neck." In her current condition she could barely hold onto that scalpel and her pulse was shaking all over.
She used the medic as a human shield to slam the guard against a wall, stabbing her jailer right in the eye with the surgeon knife. While he convulsed in pain she grabbed the keys to the cell and made a run for it.
At this time of the day most of the guards where outside eating dinner so she was able to escape the dungeon without running into heavy opposition. Using her previous knowledge of the fort she was able to get around the few guards on the gate. The gambit had paid off, by the time she sneaked around the main checkpoint knews of a prisoner escape had reached everyone on the Fort so she needed to hurry up and make a run for the hills to the South East.
The rag wearing Oni walked as fast as she could, after enduring a whole week of torture having rocks and rough ground beneath her bare feet didn't feel so bad by comparison.
Seal resistance: learned at level 1 After attacking, the defending unit gets -6 resistance until that unit's turn.
Take a short trek off road they said. There were people in need they said.
Any lead he got from the locals residing near the great wall brought him into more traps that he could possibly imagine in a single area. Originally he had been there to apprehend a few outlaws, but the route of his return changed when he caught word of a conflict near Fort Jinya.
Under no present circumstances would he attempt to interfere with battles fought between the two warring nations. At the same time, tending to any injured folk he might find along with giving the fallen a proper burial was the least he could do for both sides. This war of theirs only claimed the lives of the virtuous it seemed.
Only the most ruthless of Nohr and the unshakable of Hoshido lived. Young men and women who might not even have wanted anything to do with this fight fell by the thousands. All just to lend their hand to their country. It could have been for a cause people in power peached without believing in themselves.
A fist clenched subconsciously as his pondered. There was the chance some soldiers were about his age.
Counting his blessings, he traversed the rock laden terrain. True to word, there had been the occasional person in need. In need of his gold that was. The number of times someone attempted to rob him of his possessions had increased lately. Not that he could complain. Each encounter ended with the same way and only proved to be a minor inconvenience when factoring in his immensely hastened regeneration.
In addition, the more marauders that he captured meant that less innocent people would be put in danger. He found it funny how taking a detour lead from one thing to another. At this rate he began to think that taking this alternate way was a good idea.
Eventually he came across a road- the path he sought since his day started. He could finally return from his bounty hunting. A sigh of relief escaped his lips. Nevertheless, he could hear the sound of light tapping approaching quickly.
An incoming carriage perhaps? It could not have been. Surely, the noise produced by hooves trotting on the ground would be more frequent and numerous. By what he heard, he gauged the presence of a single being.
His right hand crept towards the grip of a dagger. There he waited.
All the guards surrounding the fort where alerted to be on the look out for the runway prisoner. half a dozen horsemen where sent to find Akemi knowing she couldn't have gotten too far. There was no need to divert any more man power to deal with a single prisoner, however the foreign guards still hadn't discovered all the hidden approaches in and out of the Fort.
It was imposible for Akemi to not hear the approaching horses, galloping in the distance. Immediately she hurled herself at the closest bush at the side of the road. The foliage and vegetation to the east of the fortress made it possible for her to stay out of sight even if she was forced to lay prone and crawl slowly.
The injured Oni crawled for hours until the sun began to set in. Somehow she'd managed to evade the search parties. the bites from bugs felt like getting tickled compared to the flogging she'd been getting back at that dungeon. Never before in her life she was so grateful for night fall since it gave her the opportunity to slip by undetected much more easily.
After four hours of crawling on the ground Akemi stood up, the torn rags she'd been wearing where covered in dirt, mud and grass. She was so thirsty her throat was getting sore. Even though her more serious injuries had been treated- she'd still get a through beating everyday before interrogation making her limp everytime she took a step.
Her right hand still clutched that surgeon knife she'd snatched from the medic but that was only for last resorts. If they caught her then she would rather use it to take her own life.
A creeping sound. The source of it could not have been more than five metres away.
Time was ripe for his guard to emerge. His dagger drew in a flash as sunlight peeking through the crowd of leaves and branches overhead bounced off it’s blade. To an enemy, a weapon had no mercy even if the weirder says otherwise. A tool of harming, of power, of strife. It just so happened that it’s target was. . .
One heavily injured woman in torn rags.
Not quite who he was expecting to turn up. All the recent attacks did put him on a needless amount of edge. Almost immediately after seeing her state, his own knife began it’s slow descent back to it’s sheath. The improvised weapon she had was taken into account by him. Even if she did manage to stab him in the neck, his body was capable of restoring himself. Whether friend or foe, he could not let someone stay in that state.
Simply one problem remained for him. Her own animosity was a factor to consider as his upmost priority. She appeared like she was ready to assault just about anyone at the slightest step out of place. Perhaps he simply needed to make himself apparent and do what came naturally to him.
Grant cleared his throat before beginning to speak. “Hello there, stranger,” his manner was calm and composed. Every word seemed to slip off the tongue just right. “You seem to have landed yourself in a rough spot there, would you mind if I tend to your injuries?” He asked as an index finger raised to his chin to rub.
“Of course, it is understandable if you decline.” The young man shrugged. “It is not often wise for one to trust a seemingly random person in the middle of nowhere.”
Akemi's heart skipped a beat when she heard someone nearby. She turned to face this man, relieved to see that he was no Nohrian soldier. Instead, she was face to face with some scrawny dandy wielding knives. He'd gone from a defensive stance to a neutral stance so it was unlikely he was there to seize her.
" W-who are you? " She spoke coarsely due to her slightly sore throat. Akemi's vocal cords where strained after her constant screaming back on that dungeon. This man certainly didn't acted or looked like a hostile but it wasn't the time to get too careless.
" If you want to do a good deed for the day then give me some water, please. The nearest river is two hours on foot to the North west and I simply cant go there right now." Akemi was a proud woman who detested the idea of begging for help but at a time like this she had to swallow her pride in order to lessen her suffering.
Unusual. An eyebrow cocked at her peculiar manners. He certainly did not foresee someone in her current form to prioritise a drink over their clearly grievous wounds. To each their own he supposed, and at the very least, she did allow him to aid her in some manner. That much he could comply to easily.
The butler brought himself to a kneel as he propped up one of the two cylindrical sacks containing his belongings before him. A burlap bag- perhaps not for storing the most valuable of items. From it, he produced a neatly kept water skin of which he offered forth after standing up.
“Drink at your leisure.” Grant uncorked the storage. Clean water resided within from an earlier boiling session the day prior. “However, I insist once more on examining your wounds,” he added on.
His eyes focused on the rather ghastly surroundings. A road nearly in tatters accompanied by the occasional stray shrub and dead bush. Not the best place to rest and recuperate one’s self.
“Furthermore, I suggest we find somewhere else to take this conversation,” said the young man to finally end his train of thought. “No reason in particular- simply a notion that you may decline if you so wish.”
" Thank you." Akemi bowed her head politely as a gesture of appreciation then her shaking hands grabbed the canteen and she downed a long gulp of fresh water. Once her thirst was quenched she corked it back and handed it over back to Grant .
" I wont forget your kindness. You are right, this is not the place for introductions. My injuries are not that grave so I wouldn't mind waiting for a while longer." This man reminded her to travelling clerics going across the lands helping those in needs but he didn't looked like a member of the clergy.
" I know a place where we can take shelter for the evening. Are you a travelling medic, by chance? " He rather insisted on checking her injuries so that was a likely explanation. From the forest trail they would head further East towards a mountain range where they found a cave.
" The Hoshidan army uses these tunnels from time to time for covert operations. If you see armed people leave the talking to me. They are my comrades." On their way there she picked up some fire wood and twigs that could be used to make a campfire to keep the wild animals away. They where now far enough from the enemy lines to not give their positions away by doing so.
In a matter of moments the green haired former prisoner got a campfire going just outside the cave. " I'll let you examine me now." She turned her back on Grant and pulled up her rags presenting her naked back to the travelling good Samaritan. All of those cuts and bruises where recent and all that movement she did earlier only opened some of the fresh wounds. Luckily for her none of them where infected yet ...
Not long after he returned the water skin back to the rest of his belongings, she already agreed on moving to some other place. Mild content was his state, yet he did not display any signs of it. He stood and followed at a clearly practiced level of attention and posture. Perhaps it was out of caution of the woman he was aiding. A more likely motive however, was the fact that they were sill out in the open.
Nearly every possible type of cover was scanned by him. It would be foolish not to take care in a foreign territory, especially one which is seemingly alien to him. Only one factor kept his paranoia down and that was the green haired warrior herself. After all, two pairs of eyes were often more perceptive than one.
“Not quite my profession,” he admitted with slight uncertainty in his tone. “Surgery and medicine are unchecked on the list of my proficiencies even if I do possess knowledge on both topics.” A free hand gestured towards the rough patchwork of stitches combined with bandages on her body. “Regardless, you say your wounds are not severe, yet the assortment of poorly constructed seams appear to disagree.”
Reaching the cave consumed less time than he had anticipated. Then again, he had close to nothing concerning the lay of the land so who was he to think otherwise?
None the matter. His utmost priority now was to inspect the damage cause to her. His eyes widened faintly. It appeared to be much worse than he had earlier deemed. Lucky for him, he was not about to make any sort of physical contact- lest it endanger her even more.
Grant raised his palms to an inch away from her back. Since he had arrived to the continent, his ability to heal both his own body and that of others had improved twice fold. No flashing lights or colours emerged from his palm, simply a soothing feeling washing over the target from channeling his own latent energy into a greater restoration of one’s body and spirit.
Bruises, gashes and even lacerations would cease to be. Strings from unkempt stitching unravelled themselves before swaying gently to the ground.
This soothing sensation was slightly unsettling at first, Goose bumps forming on her skin as the open wounds closed and her body began naturally healing with some outside assistance form this man's healing powers. This wasn't the first time she'd been healed by magic but it was certainly quite the contrast to the rough treatment she'd been getting all week long at the hands of those Nohrians.
After a short while she put her rags back on out of modesty more than anything. She wasn't fond of those smelly old rags but it was better than prancing around completely naked.
" My captors were quite content keeping me from bleeding to death but I wont excuse their lack of proper care. I guess they did not have the time or resources to take care of someone whom they considered to be their enemy." There was no need to beat around the bush with this man, he would have certainly been able to deduce as much just by looking at her previous state.
" You're not a Nohrian for sure and I haven't heard your name yet. I wont pry in business that aren't my own but if we run into my comrades and they suspect you then I wont be able to do much to keep them from getting in your case. I don't think you are our enemy but there's a war going on right now and people cant help but be paranoid on both sides. You wouldn't want to rub either side the wrong way and end up caught in some sort of misunderstanding that could have been easily avoided with simple words." As grateful as she was for the assistance he provided Akemi wanted to make clear some of her compatriots wouldn't be as kind hearted to his mysterious ways.
" If you plan on travelling these lands you are going to need an alibi. Something to keep people from thinking you are some kind of spy or saboteur." He certainly didn't looked like one of such shady individuals but looks could be deceitful. Akemi was a simple woman and her feminine intuition told her Grant was no such person, she could have been wrong, of course.
Upon finally having mended her wounds Grant let out a quiet sigh of relief. Still, There were other things that needed to be addressed. At least the most important of them had just been completed. Duly, he lowered his baggage to rest against a nearby wall.
“A prisoner of war,” he uttered as he opened the second of his two bags. The butler shook his head. “I am sorry to hear that.” A set of clothes akin to his own was lifted out of the storage. Immediately, his expression contorted into a frown displaying sparse annoyance. Nearly every other piece of clothing he owned had the markings of combat. Stabs, cuts, ripping and more. One of the many results of engaging armed opponents. Perhaps the only intact garments would be that of which he was currently wearing and holding up in front of himself.
Any clothes he held were laid upon the surface of a large, clean slab of rock. A plain white long-sleeved shirt, a pair of jet-black pants with a matching vest and a pair of socks- all folded neatly and at the ready. All that was truly needed was a pair of shoes. Troublesome considering that he had no extra pairs on him at the moment.
He placed his own coat over her shoulders as her back faced him before heading back to his belongings. “An alibi is only required for criminals, stranger. Nonetheless I will thank you for your concern.” Rummaging through the bag with one hand, he gestured to the attire with his other. “You will find that I have taken the liberty of preparing my attire for you.” Out from the sacks he pulled out numerous smaller pouches and compartments. “They might not be of appropriate size for you, though I suppose it hardly matters when modesty is at stake.”
Woven dried fibres encased numerous smaller objects which rattled as he shook the container. It appeared to be a much smaller, spherical basket of some sort with a lid securing it’s top. “You may change inside the cave. I shall roast nuts as I wait- you must be absolutely starving for something other than the gruel I assume they serve to their captives.”
" This isn't your first time in Hoshido, is it? Our kingdom has certainly seen better days! This war is hell for all of us poor fools caught in the middle of it, Nohrian and Hoshidan alike." As she got involved in more battles Akemi realized how pointless this slaughter had become. She'd seen the atrocities committed by everyone involved and none seemed truly justified.
" This war has only brought the worse out of all of us." Some of the things she'd done would ashamed her for the rest of her life. " Sorry if that came out of nowhere. I haven't been able to normally talk with someone in so long I had to get it out of my chest." Just having someone that could listen to her did wonders improving her overall mood after spending so much time in solitary confinement.
" For me? I don't think any of these would fit but I guess I cant be icky at a time like this. I'll clean them before giving these back to you." There really was no reason to not take these clothes he offered. Akemi wasn't particularly shy around men but anything was better than those rags which she tossed into the fire afterwards.
After a few minutes she walked out of the cave , still adjusting the pants around her waist. " I have some friends back in Kitsuki. If you could come I can repay your kindness." Having Grant around was probably the best thing that could have happened to her after escaping Fort Jinya' all she had to do now was get back in Kitsuki and share her findings with the others.
Leaving the emerald haired warrior to change gave him time to prepare a small meal. There was something he already had in mind, though making any sort of food with his resources was rather tough on just about anybody in his position. Hunting for meat or herbs would consume too much time as well as having a large chance of accidentally poisoning her due to his lack of knowledge concerning the local flora. Lucky enough for him, he already had nuts, berries and other rations stored.
The dried berries would do on their own. Though, he would prefer if the assortment of nuts were a little less bland.
Out of seemingly nothing, he drew a gleaming bronze dagger of which he utilised to whittle down a few sticks until they were thin, straight and had slightly pointed tips. Skewers, if one would like to describe them aptly. The butler made about three of them in a flurry of slices and carves before moving on to cracking the shells of chestnuts he fished out and spearing them one upon another.
After he had finished with the preparation, he pierced the blunt ends of each skewer into the ground- allowing the chestnuts to roast.
A savoury scent wafted around the camp from the nuts which were slowly turning into a more vivid shade of golden brown. Just in time too for his acquaintance who had finished dressing.
“You need not repay me, stranger.” Grant held up a single palm to wave, and then gesture towards the tiny woven container filled with berries next to the roasting chestnuts. “Though if you are proceeding to Kitsuki, I suppose I can stop by there for some supplies and to also make sure you arrive there safely.”
