Approximately 5 hours after the events of Hearts of Iron Early morning Suganuma village-South Western Hoshido. Mitsuko ' Lily Marleen' Nakajima and Serena 'Seeker/Felicity' Leigh.
The girls emerged out of the forest all wearing different clothes. Mitsuko had stored away her iron armor, putting on a traditional orange Yukata. She handed 'Felicity' a similar attire since her regular clothes would make her stand out. The Black Pegasus's wings where hidden underneath saddle blanket and some cargo. It wasn't a perfect disguise but it would buy them enough time to make a hasty retreat in case things went south.
The weather was slightly humid, so much so even in her light garment Mitsuko was sweating slightly.
As a reward for flying them over the black Pegasus was given a pair of carrots one after another." Be a good boy Brigadier." There was no need to fly and attract needless attention so they would walk on the way to the village.
On the way there the women began to work on their alibies and what to say in case they ran into Hoshidan army guards or nosy rabble. Felicity would pass as a Scholar from Notre Sagesse on her way to the capital to impart classes at a university seminar.
" You don't have to say anything in case we run into soldiers. just bow your head down and act like a coward and they'll leave you alone." Before they could arrive at the village they ran into the expected army checkpoint in which they would put their alibies to the test.
The Soldiers checked their cargo but couldn't find anything that would get them in trouble so both girls where granted passage. Their weapons where hidden away by the side of the road in a place where they could go collect them later.
The town of Suganuma was a rural population center and it was surrounded by farmland. People lead active life styles here and there even was an army garrison in town. This might have been a rural country town but it was far from backwards.
Both women made their way to the Inn and as agreed got a room and split the bill. After arriving at their room, Mitsuko began to look in the walls in search for holes which could let other occupants overheard their conversation, Only when she was certain they where in the clear did Mitsuko began to talk.
" We should stay here for a while and start putting together a plan of action. That Garrison is easily over a hundred strong so we need to find a way to distract them while we go to work." Acting on a whim could have potentially fatal consequences.

Muscle memory kicked in, once more aiding the woman in protecting her life. Her time with the traveling trader kicked in. They were less than savory people and had taught her how to attract certain attention, while attracting none. Serena added a little sway to her step. She kept the strange dress's top closed. She would save the cleavage trick for a later date. however, the more womanly gait would keep part of her true personality secret.
As in instructed, Serena said nothing when dealing with the guards. She let Lilly do all the talking and did her best to seem incompetent. It worked like a charm. Men already thought women were weak. She just needed to look the part.
The town and its people passed with haunting familiarity. The families wandering about could have been her family. The buildings were of simple make and even the troops stood in remembrance. Only the uniform was different and there wasn't any snow. Heavy guilt pulsed through Serena's body with each heart beat. Nohr was her monster and she was this town's boogeyman. This was for the tribe. That was the only thought pushing her on.
Their rented room came with a great deal of relief. "The fields can be taken easily. We'd just need the right amount of space and darkness. We just don't know how smart these people are. We start a fire, they might start panicking. Or, they could know what we were up to." The glacial scout fell back on her bed. "How do two people even go about distracting that many soldiers? No matter, what someone is going to be held back. No one in their right mind would send everyone on hand to something."
She fussed with her bathrobe. "Maybe if we start a riot or something at the inn, troops might be sent to do something about it. If not, then I don't know. I'm more of a survivalist." The woman explained. "I'm new to this sabotage thing. The only thing that really pulled most of our people from town was an avalanche. But, I don't think it's going to snow soon. Maybe we can burn city hall?"
So far everything was going great on this little excursion. now, it was merely a matter of blending in with the locals. Serena admitted this was her first time on sabotage duty which was understandable, she had the air of a huntress not a spy but she would have to learn the basics of asymmetric warfare if they both wanted a chance at success.
Hoshidan officers born into Samurai families where instructed in all aspects of warfare since their early years and even though Mitsuko had been born a female this mattered none to her father.
" Here's what we can do for starters: I can go around gathering information during the day. I'll work at one of the restaurants and listen to the soldiers, with any luck they wont keep their mouth shut. You could go out at night and get acquainted with the terrain but more importantly the roads that lead in and out of town. You know how to draw maps, I assume? " They needed to make the home field advantage theirs. Outnumbered as they where the two would be forced to use the terrain to outmaneuver any punitive force no matter how big.
" That way you can go pick up our weapons tomorrow evening." Now that they had completed the first phase of the assignment Mitsuko unrobed herself out of that sweaty Yukata. " We'll do our own laundry, by the way." Now that they where behind four walls she could also untie those ribbons letting her long hair loose.
"Now that's something I can do. Making a map isn't too hard. I had to do it a few times back in my unit, even made a few new trails myself. It won't be a home-field advantage for long. I know a few trapping techniques as well. I'll have a few ready in the even that we get found out and need a quick escape. It won't be lethal, but they won't be able to get out of it on their own."
"How are you at climbing and swimming?" The seeker asked. "I need to know what's off limits. It does us no good in having a plan, only for the route to have to be ignored because one of us can't handle a certain terrain."
Serena laid down, finding the yukata a bit more revealing than it should be. However, she didn't care. Her right leg bounced in anticipation. A short dagger was nothing compared to the comfort of her bow. Its ratty, wooden grip was sorely missed. This was enemy territory, even if they didn't know she was the enemy.
The woman's mind returned to nagging guilt. No matter how many times she had told herself that principles didn't matter in war, it wasn't so easy to believe. A concussions couldn't exist for criminals and that's what she was.
"Laundry isn't a big deal." Serena said. "I've done my own plenty of times."
" I can swim and lift my own weight without a problem but i'd rather use my brigadier to do the later." Even though Mitsuko seemed like fairly normal girl she was physically fit and more than capable of traversing difficult obstacles on her own.
" Lets rest for today and tomorrow we'll begin. " The two of them had spent most of the night prior travelling to the destination so Mitsuko was understandably tired and it was likely Serena was just as exhausted. Since Serena expressed to interest in using the bathroom Mitsuko went in first getting all cleaned up in a hurry. Since the two of them where women there was little to no shame between them.
" Maybe I should get a haircut ... " She commented while brushing her long raven hair after leaving the bathroom. Once her hair was dried up Mitsuko laid in her own bed and quickly drifted to sleep.
The following day ...
Shortly after waking up Mitsuko went over a warm up routine she performed every morning. Without disturbing her companion she left to the stable to tend to Kurogane's needs. Once her Pegasi had been taken care off she walked out of the inn and made her way towards the local eatery. As expected some of the people sitting on these tables where soldiers off duty.
" What brings a lady from the capital to our humble village? " Asked the restaurant owner to a Mitsuko who had given a fake name to identify herself.
" Its rather simple, really. I'm looking for a place away from all the crowds and noise at shirasagi. I'm a quiet person you see so a town like Suganuma fits my needs. With any luck i'll be able to acquire a property around here and make this my permanent place of residency." This girl was quite the natural actress to the point she even believed those very same lies she uttered.

The skies had been clear, giving way to the peaceful morning sun. All things in the forest basked in loving warmth. And Serena hated it. While she had learned to handle non-freezing temperatures, there was just something about Hoshido's humid forests that burned her. It just made her clothes soppy and cobalt strands stuck to the back of her neck.
Her yukata had been discarded several miles back, in favor for the breathe-ability of her usual outfit. The red sleeve that usually wrapped her right arm was absent, but the dark leggings remained. She had learned quickly that traversing the woods in shorts wasn't a very smart idea. Even if they provided little cover against the brush, it was cover.
She covered the same ground multiple times. It sucked hours from her day, but gave her near intimate knowledge of the natural world surrounding their town. On occasion, she stopped at a river to drink from its water. How cold it was. How it tempted her to splash about, she didn't. The seeker kept on and put her scout training to use. There was certain enjoyment about it all. It was a refreshing reminder of home.
Of course thoughts of home weren't welcome. They came with self loathing. Each word she had said about Nohrian scum ruining her village, was now aimed internally. She applied greater attention to her task at hand, but it helped little. She was alone and while alone, all she did was think.

More soldiers arrived at the restaurant as the evening fell. At least a quarter of the tables where occupied by local guards. Mitsuko volunteered to tend to those tables, approaching the men while singing marching songs which she'd memorized.
♫ On the snow we march, stepping on ice We cant even tell the road from the river The horses are exhausted, but we cant abandon them here What even is this place, other than an enemy country?♪
The soldiers at the table joined her singing, amazed this new waiter knew these sort of tunes. It was difficult for them to resist the temptation to join along, reminiscing the days of training at the capital.
" Misaki-chan, Where did you learned that song? " Asked a smiling sergeant.
" My brother was in the army. He's with a sapper company god knows where. He hasn't written a letter in two weeks now? " Lying came natural to Mitsuko, she needed to immerse herself in this new role if she was to convince these men.
For the sake of maintaining her credibility she didn't attempt to get any of them drunk, at least not yet. She needed to win them over so they would talk confidently around her and she wasn't simply going to do that after a day or two.
Just in case any of them got careless she would write down some conversations whenever she wasn't taking orders or cleaning tables.
Eventually it was time to close the restaurant so after the last client walked out she got to work cleaning the whole place up. " The things I do for money." With that out of the way it was time to head back to the inn.
Later that evening she arrived back at their room with a lunch box she'd gotten along the way. She didn't expect ' Serena ' to be around but even then had brought a portion in case she was.

Night fell, leaving Serena exhausted and drenched with sweat. Each step burned her thighs. It was a familiar pain that she welcomed with open arms. Her feet resisted with numb comfort. Yukata recovered, Serena knelt by a shallow stream. Its cool, refreshing water was a nice respite from scouting. After drinking her fill, the seeker washed herself with it.
The brisk night brushed cold hands across the woman's exposed arms and sopping hair left her neck tingling. Serena retrieved her bow from its bed of rocks, heading back towards the town. There was a sort of comfort in stalking through the darkened woods. She wasn't one to have a fear of the dark. She might not be able to see her enemies, but that meant they couldn't see her either.
Few people lingered on the streets. The occasional soldier walked, halfheartedly patrolling. They gave her no trouble as she walked into the tavern. It was late in the night, a few hours from daybreak. Serena shed her yukata and collapsed into her bed. She said nothing to Lilly, not entirely sure if her companion was awake.
Ambush locations had been found. She counted a total of three spots to strike from. The hiding spots were numerous and almost countless. However, Serena couldn't have been the only one that knew of them. Deciding which ones to use would have to be decided on the fly. That would be the hardest part. She spent what few hours of night she had forming strategy. The sun rose without Serena sleeping.
That night Mitsuko slept lightly, sitting against the wall next to the door. For a couple of hours she rested until she could hear someone opening the locked door. With a light yawn she rubbed her eyes, getting back on her feet to greet 'Felicity'.
" You've been certainly busy today." Her findings on the terrain where remarkable. With this knowledge it would be much easier to formulate an scape plan since neither of them stood much of a chance against those numbers. They finally agreed to act independently to cause as much damage in the least amount of time. This also minimized the risk of both of them being caught.
" Now its only a matter of finding the best possible ' rally point' I can leave my Brigadier there for us to get out quickly. Ideally, somewhere near our targets but not too close to any would be pursuers. Keep an eye out for the guards' movements and see if you can identify any patterns in their rotation. I'll see if I can squeeze any intel out of them in the meantime. Just today I found out that before the week ends half of them would be leaving for the border." Mitsuko spoke quietly since the walls where thin. For the sake of secrecy they discussed their strategy without turning any lights on.
Three days later ...
One morning a large column of soldiers marched out of their fort just outside the village. The column marched northwards most likely to the border or the capital. No one really knew where they were headed anymore.
The night prior Mitsuko had gone over the preparations for the raid. She tried to give Serena a hand out building the booby traps in secrecy and setting them in place. The two of them never really talked to each other about personal matters while on the job.
There was an air of mutual respect and neither of them where interested in getting too acquainted with each other out of professionalism. They where partners in a crime that was punishable by death. Spies and saboteurs where executed whenever they where caught.
They would start the fires by using a combination of flint stone, hay and a slight amount of flammable liquid. Mitsuko targeted the township from where she'd stolen some documents a day before while Serena picked the best suitable target of opportunity based on her findings.

"There's a nearby hill." Serena said as she piled her tools into a short hand basket. "It gets pretty steep and rather rocky after a few feet. My point is that it would be difficult to climb. Soldiers are trained to fight and march. Uphill with uncertain terrain just make a man sloppy. I found a nice plateau that you can leave your Pegasus. I can scale the hill easily and I left some burner there."
Serena reached for a small object beside her basked. "We usually make these out of ceramics, but I made a few out of these wooden cups. They're filled with scraps of cloth, tinder, and what have you. Essentially, I light a small fire and leave it to burn away at the insides until the cup burns. Its a covert way of starting a fire. Merchants I knew used to use them to keep warm, I sort of altered them. The ones I left at the plateau are ceramic though. I figure as we leave, we can drop them in wheat fields."
The seeker moved to the door. "See you on the other side."
Serena moved though the town's dwindling streets. Marching soldiers had pulled the majority of town's folk tot he outskirts to see their local heroes off and that gave the saboteur all the time she needed. She cut to the farm, moving to a silo. The seeker knelt down, striking steel and bringing shallow flame to life inside a burner. She stuffed it into a high pile of grain. Yukata discarded, the seeker bolted towards the wilderness.
" You sure are handy." There was no denying that this Felicity woman was quite resourceful since she'd come up with a more efficient fire starting method that would make it easier for them to accomplish the task at hand.
" Likewise. good hunting out there~ " Now that it was time to split up Mitsuko donned her iron armor underneath the Yukata. Naturally this made her look a little odd but she'd managed to make it fit by loosening her Yukata around the waist considerably.
Now that there where considerably less soldiers it was easier to move around the town even though she still had to evade the locals. In case of an emergency they would be the ones blowing the whistle on them. Mitsuko constantly looked behind her back at every turn until she arrived at the town hall from which she'd already pilfered a few documents the other night. This time however there was no way for her to get in without being seen. Luckily, she'd made a rudimentary wood club just for the occasion, a tool she would use to knock unconscious whoever she stumbled upon on this mission.
At this hour of the day there was only one male accountant at the building. Mitsuko wasted no time beating the poor man in the back head with the improvised blunt weapon. " This is the time consuming part ... " A short piece of string was tied around her wrist and unto the wooden club so she could let go of it in order to grab the man by the legs and drag him behind some furniture.
' I only have five minutes or less to get this done and drag this poor bastard out of here. ' Even though she'd knocked the man unconscious she wasn't going to leave him all by himself on a burning building. Immediately Mitsuko moved to the archives, knocking scrolls of the shelves along the way. Since it was mostly paper it would all catch fire rather easily and the flames would soon propagate all around the wooden structure.
She started the fire right in the middle and immediately walked out just as the smoke began to rise. By the time Mitsuko walked out of the building dragging the unfortunate civil servant a group of people gathered to search for the source of the smoke.
" He blacked out after inhaling some of the fumes!" She shouted at the group of concerned civilians. " I don't think there's anyone else inside. I'll go get some help, please take care of my friend." After feeding them this lie she laid the man over on the street and ran in the opposite direction.
" Suckers! " She sneered at them turning sharply around the corner to lose line of sight with these poor farmers who had no idea what was going on yet.
Brush and the forest floor concealed the seeker's hasty steps. The surrounding woods demanded little attention but the growing plum of smoke behind her called curious eyes. Fire spread fast through dried wheat and soon the entire silo was burning. Farmhands raced flimsy buckets of water, fruitless dousing the growing inferno with puddles. No one was going to be looking for her.
“Akeno, where are you going!”
“The river is closer!” A youthful voice shouted back.
Serena slowed herself. The river's slow babble overpowered silence.
“Danno, Noriko go with him!”
The saboteur splashed across rushing water as children breached the treeline. Her mind played at the worst possibilities. How many people would come for her if kids spotted her? Could she live with herself if the unthinkable happened? Would she even be able to release the drawstring? She left the thought behind and pushed for cover behind thorn bushes.
A trio of kids dunked buckets in the river, filling them before racing back towards the smoke. The cautious seeker breathed silent relief and broke from cover. The hill wasn't a far trek. Trees receded and the woman found herself climbing towards the plateau, where four people stood.
"Which one is older brother?” A child watched countless men march in the distance.
While the kid was transfixed by the soldiers, his brother took notice of the climbing woman. He looked to her with curiosity, noticing the burning farm behind her.
' I don't think I can get away with setting another building on fire. ' Now that some of these villagers had seen her at a crime scene it was really risky to attempt a similar stunt. She ran outside the village and saw how the fields began catching fire. It seemed her companion managed to get that going without any major complications.
The village first responders where puzzled now having to deal with two major fires simultaneously. Naturally some of the soldiers joined in, carrying buckets of water from any nearby body of water to extinguish the flames but with their current numbers there wasn't much that could be done.
The few remaining officers began to assume this was the work of saboteurs. It simply was too much of a coincidence and the timing was impecable. Nonetheless there where more important matters at hand like preventing the flames from spreading and causing much more property damage. If they where to give chase right now and let these fires spread then there was no denying the whole town would get razed to the ground before sunset.
Mitsuko ditched her Yukata shortly after leaving town. Clad in her armor she decided to go for a swim on the river, confident that the current would take her closer to the rendezvous point where her mount awaited. It was a deep river but even with her gear on she was able to stay afloat, diving every now and then to avoid being seen by any peddlers of farmers attempting to draw water from the river.
Right now the most important thing was getting the hell out undetected and do it quickly. Kurogane wouldn't heed Serena's command so Mitsuko needed to be there to get them out.
"Don't worry about it." Serena snapped. "Go home kid." "I'm no kid. I'll be old enough to join the army soon!" The elder brother snapped. "What? Do you want to die before you even have the chance to fight back?" Her voice came harsh.
He glanced to the rising smoke, then studied her Nohrian face. Realization controlled his hazel eyes. "You did that." He muttered. "Did what?" His younger brother asked. "The town. She's the one that burned it." "Get out of here." Serena said. "You're a criminal." He said. "We gotta tell somebody." "No you won't." The seeker snapped. "Kid look down there. We're too far for anyone to hear you. By time you get there, I'll be long gone."
So far the man's friends had kept quiet, yet she could see the tension growing in their eyes. They were going to do something. Compared to her, they were all kids. Then one moved for a weapon and Serena pounced.
"Put it down!" She shouted.
The older brother turned to look at his friend and caught one of Serena's arrows on his back. He fell while his friends stood stunned. She didn't hesitate. Two additional arrows claimed two additional lives. The child knelt at his brother, trying to shake the life back into him. Wet eyes glanced up to find Serena aiming her bow at him.
Mitsuko kept swimming down stream, struggling to stay a float with all the gear she was carrying around. Every now and then she would take a deep breath before diving back into the cold water. After nearly twenty minutes of non stop swimming she reached her destination, crawling out of that river all drenched in water.
Just behind a hill her black Pegasus awaited, still tied up to the same tree she'd left him. " You missed me, didn't you? " The rider caressed her equine friend head. " Looks like our huntress friend is not here yet ... do you think she has gotten into trouble? Thought as much. " Even though they agreed to be profesional Mitsuko couldn't exactly leave Serene here to be caught.
In a hurry she mounted Kurogane's saddle, commanding the black Pegasus to take to the skies once she was done untying that knot that kept him from wandering off.
She flew the Pegasus low and fast, just above the tree tops when she saw Serena in a sticky situation. " Need a lift?" Loudly she whistled at the Huntress, holding the reigns of the Pegasus with one hand and reaching out for her with the other one. She choose to ignore the scene surrounding it and she had no desire to stop to reveal her face to more people.
