Serena and Mitsuko Early evening. Undisclosed location - Hoshido Now that Mitsuko convinced the influential people of the black market she was sent on an assignment back in her homeland. A simple snatch and grab assignment in theory, However she couldn't simply sneak back trough the border not when a war could start at any moment.
If not careful she would either be arrested by her own people or let the Nohrian archers turn her into a pin cushion.
The border was monitored at all times by sentries on both sides. Back in the Nohrian capital it was no secret that kingdom sponsored mercenaries where let loose deliberately whenever there was a gap on the Hoshidan's guard rotation. These mercenaries where responsible for waging guerilla warfare against what was considered the Hoshidan's supply lines.
Since Misaki had just arrived in Windmire she decided to go enlist in one of such mercenary companies. These ' private military contractors ' where former soldiers, some even dishonorable discharged so Mitsuko came to the conclusion that she was going to need to conceal her identity and what better way to do than donning a silly mask to cover her visage along with an alias referencing an obscure novel no one in her current work environment would understand.
The mask she'd ended up buying on the bazaar was a black carnival one adorned with a large dark red feather. It made her stand out even more than she would have desired but there where no better options currently available to conceal her identity.
There was a lady at the reception of this mercenary company. For a band of savage brutes they where certainly well funded and staffed. The woman almost laughed when she saw this young girl arrive more appropriately dressed for a parade than for illicit military adventures with a high degree of deniability. Nevertheless she was armed and looked fit enough for battle.
In no time Mitsuko was sent to join an element on the field destined to make for the border in an hour or so. Since she could ride Kurogane out of the capital she was able to make good time and arrive at the encampment just in time for an operation. As expected the rally point was a Nohrian army encampment miles away from the border.
The guards on duty where weary to receive the visit of a sky knight but her paper work checked out. The Guard Captain removed her mask momentarily wanting to look at her eyes. This girl had certainly seen combat before judging by that almost dead stare on her deep red eyes.
" All right, doll. Go meet up with the rest of your company. you people leave to the border in an hour. " The orders had already been issued so there was no reason to interrogate the woman any further. She walked Kurogane to the nearest stable available, letting him in the care of the outpost veterinary for the time being.
The seeker sat with a band of less than savory strangers and they would stay strangers. She asked no questions, receiving none in exchange. The less they knew, the better. The more brutish of condoned murderers simply refereed to her as 'The woman'. A few had even made pathetic attempts at a pass. Serena would rather have been buried alive.
After bitter words and uncomfortable silence, her allied brigands finally left her alone. Turning back to each other, improbable boasts were thrown about, followed by even more impossible stories. At least it was entertaining. Who's to say that all of these men didn't each slay a dragon, rescue a town, and bed the finest princess around?
Left in her own world, the glacial scout found defeat in her purpose. Coin. Lowly jobs and hunting barren woods paid little. Rumors placed this group to be foul, but wealthy. It was enough for her. What did it matter if she ruined someone else's business? Or farm? The war would take its tole eventually. Serena was just going to help it along. Besides, having a band of jackasses would have its own perks. People in the underworld knew things. The woman stood up with renewed purpose.
"You know, I once fell forty feet into a crystal cavern?" Her not-so-humble words caught their attention. "I was driving horses along a mountain when, out of nowhere, came a bear. No, three bears. The horses panicked and bolted off. I was busy eating dinner and got thrown off."
"Oh yeah?" One of the brigands questions. Doubt laced his high voice. "Then what happened?"
"I broke my leg and was pinned under the cart. I had to dig myself free and drag myself back to town. That was two days after being buried in snow. I had to claw my way out. It was the single worst thing that I have ever went through." She pointed to the nearest man. "And I'd still rather do it again than sleep with you."
Several of the men busted into obnoxious laughter as they pushed Serena's target. His stone expression betrayed displeasure as one of the men wrapped an arm around her. "Aye, you're alright Blue."
She laughed with the man before pulling his arm off him. Chuckles bled into words. "Don't touch me."
There seemed to be a little back and forth banter going on with some of these hired hands. These Nohrians sure liked to waste their breath before being called into action. It was in the least surprising to see these men go after this girl with cyan hair. While pretty it was easy to tell she had experience on the field judging by her overall physique and nonchalant attitude.
Mitsuko's former unit was composed mostly of other women so no one really tried to get intimate in the traditional sense. The Hoshidan military doctrine was strict to a T. One of the many cultural differences between the nation martial services.
The masked Pegasus rider sat down in a spot away from the merry band of sellswords, deciding to take her time to drink some water from her flash and start cutting an apple in delicate pieces using a tanto knife she kept on her person as a utility tool more than anything.
For the sake of keeping her identity under wraps she had already came up with an alias to use. It would be foolish to introduce herself with her birth name to a bunch of aggressive mercenaries hired to sack the kingdom she'd ailed from.
"Say Blue, who's that chick?" One of the merry men tipped his head towards their added member.
"No idea." Serena replied.
"Shouldn't you know?" He asked.
"Why? Because I'm a woman?"
"Well yeah."
"So all women have to no each other?" The glacial scout snapped. "Does that mean you know King Garron? Why would he leave you such a mess? You figure he'd give you some better gear, clean up your teeth, and maybe bath?"
"Aye, come now. I'm not that dirty." He replied. "Bet I could get her to talk to me."
"Please try. It would make this a thousand times better." Serena said.
"Alright. Watch me."
The mercenary strolled away, approaching the masked woman. Serena watched from her distance. She sized up the stranger swiftly. Disconnected. She sat alone with her Pegasus. She had no interest in meeting those people and she had something to hide. Of course, a mask and distance only made her stick out. At least it would distract people from Serena's colorful hair. Sending the man came with ulterior motives.
If Serena was going to be working with someone like that, she wanted to know how the woman worked. How she treated those lessor than her was telling. Belligerent men often felt like the had something to prove, but the masked woman would prove more. The seeker watched with interest matching those around her.
With how rowdy the group was going it was near impossible for Mitsuko to not listen to the whole exchange. She was quite convinced these people would come ask her questions eventually but she'd hoped no attention would come in her way, nevertheless she needed to act with some civility towards these people.
The black Pegasus that accompanied her seemingly glanced over the mercenary. Just like horses they could be easily startled but Mitsuko stood up keeping it at ease. " Can I help you? " inquired the masked young woman clad in armor, using a fake overly dramatic accent to hide her true method of pronouncing certain words.
She realized a few moments ago that all eyes where currently on her. From the looks of it that cyan haired lady was quite pleased to not be the only woman around here anymore which was perfectly understandable. Mitsuko continued chopping that apple into tiny, delicate pieces, letting her OCD take over.
" There will be plenty of submissive Hoshidan beauties where we are going, friend. The kind of women that wont make you regret getting too bold with indecent propositions. That woman over there and I are nothing but trouble, you'd be better off courting other delicate flowers." Her tone was foreboding but not particularly threatening. there was no use making enemies already even if she didn't intend to stick around with this group for too long.
The man said nothing and, like a dog, returned with his tail between his knees. He kept quiet among the others yet they still laughed at him. Ridiculing voices died down at his shrieks. "Like you guys could get any father!"
"Don't need to." One of the men replied. "Seeing you get sent burning was all the reward I needed."
Serena walked away from their ridicule. Whatever words they shared were pretty unimportant. The glacial scout approached the lonely woman. A Pegasus wasn't much company. In fact, the only time Serena flew was enough for her. Taunting laughter died down as she drew further. They waited anxiously for Serena's crash.
"It's hard to place that accent." She said. "Can't tell if it's from a stage play, or a novel. I'd be willing to bet stage play, the outfit matches. That, or you come from a rather fancy ball. Which I must say, places you better than most of the people here." Serena glanced back to the soldiers. "Not that there is anything wrong with those find men."
" I am Lily Marleen and this fine steed is my loyal ' Brigadier '. I've come from a land across the ocean so its normal to be confused by my accent." Having that mask cover part of her face allowed Mitsuko to hide the uncertain look on her eyes. This woman was quite sharp and to the point, nothing like the dames she'd come across at the Capital city of Windmire. Having someone clever like her around would be nothing but trouble.
Mitsuko gathered the slices of apple in a small container, cleaning her knife with a piece of cloth afterwards.
There was no denying there was something rather carnaval-esque with her choice of mask and cloak. Out of courtesy the woman removed the mask, giving Serena a proper look a her face and those ruby eyes which looked at her with an hint of caution.
" My partner and I travel from battlefield to battlefield looting friend and foe alike. Once somebody falls they have no longer use for material things, don't you agree, miss? " Hopefully the woman would go away like the rest once she was fed this partial truth.
" Here, I just got this from fine bottle of Nohrian wine from my last commander. He caught a Hoshidan arrow with the back of his head so I paid a visit to his quarters afterwards." The woman reached put for a bottle of red wine she'd stowed away in a travel bag currently strapped to the Pegasus saddle. In fact she'd bought that wine back at the capital with her own money.
"Lily Marleen?" The seeker questioned. "Two first names? I suppose that's not too out of the norm. However, the name and distance are a bit off."
Once the illusive woman peeled her vibrant mask away, Serena could place her. The warning look in her eyes was enough to dissuade further probing. Serena nodded and set herself beside Lilly.
"I once stole what I could from the wreckage of a caravan just to survive. People die and well, I just needed it more than the blizzard did. Speaking of dead people." Serena motioned to the band of mercenaries that pawed them with distant eyes. "How many of them do you think are going to make it out of this?"
Serena playfully waved and smiled at the men, offering them a smile. Several voices argued over who she was really waving at. Her smile died down and she turned back to the woman beside her. "Not a fan of booze. I've seen people do some stupid stuff when drinking. It's not something I want to deal with."
It came as little surprise to hear this woman was also an avid survivalist who had no qualms about stripping corpses from their earthly possessions. This woman was ice cold, so much even her words made Mitsuko shiver under the cloak and armor she was wearing.
" There's no shame in staying alive. I'm not particularly good at predicting outcomes but scoundrels like those don't die easily. " Those men where thugs and their kind always found a way to make it out alive from unthinkable situation. if allowed to roam the prairies and fields of Hoshido for too long they would cause crippling damage to their local troop movements and maybe even the kingdoms economy.
" Good wine is like a weapon; you don't simply hand over a cup to the immature of heart and expect good results. Those people you mention are no better than children playing with sharp objects." Wile not exactly an alcoholic Mitsuko enjoyed a cup of wine every now and then. She found it to be rich in antioxidants and a preventer of heart related conditions.
" Wine has been humanity best friend for hundreds of thousands of years, a gift from the Gods of old to all mankind. its idiots with no self restraint who give everybody else a bad image." All that talk about the benefits of wine made her grab a cup which she'd made out of a water gourd, pouring it halfway. If it wasn't for the fact that glass was too brittle she would b carrying a fancy glass cup instead.
"Smart not to underestimate them." The glacial scout said. There was amusement in Serena's voice. "Underestimating someone can get you killed. And these someones aren't the best bunch. I've been watching them, listening to what they say, and checking their stories. Some of the things they say are outrageous. There's some truth, but they stretch it to the point that they might as well be writing a novel."
She turned gray eyes to the mystical woman. "Maybe it's because we're both women, or the fact that you decided to sit away from them, but I don't think you're like them. We may be working with these people, but we need to keep an eye on them as well. So, Lily, I saw we watch each other's back. You in?"
"I wouldn't exactly say that Wine is humanity's best friend. I would say that honor goes to magic. In a way, they are similar. Both, in the wrong hands, careless hands, could cause trouble. Both change the way a person thinks when they have enough. I don't use either myself." She eyed the glass. "The temptation of both can be damaging and there's too much on the line for me to try either."
One man, seemingly their leader, showed up. He whipped the raucous men into shape. They fell into attention and Serena stood up. "Come on. We should get going."
Mitsuko had only poured a little wine in her cup so by the time the company commander arrived she'd already drank it all.
" Naturally. We are the only ladies of this group so we better stick together. " Even if she'd lied to the other woman's face before Mitsuko couldn't exactly let Serena down at a time of need. The two of them had to be weary of friend and foe alike.
" How should I call you? " It appeared that this woman had never introduced herself by name.
For the sake of keeping up the appearances she once again donned the mask, removing the long feather so it wouldn't give her position away once the infiltration was underway.
From the staging area to the border it was a long march. " Alright boys and gals its time to head out. We'll march for the border in a single file. Make sure you get rid of all belongings which may give away your nationalities. " Everyone seemed to be raring to go so the warriors where sent ahead.
" Our guards will allow you to pass through the checkpoint so you better hurry. it takes the Hoshidans on the other side about five minutes to rotate the new guards so don't you dare come back unless you want to be shot full of our own arrows.
As soon as they where put in formation and ordered to part for the border Mitsuko approached Serena once more. " Hop in." Now that the Nohrian guards had been given them permission to pass trough there was no need to stick around with that pack of brutes. Serena would find out that the saddle of the black Pegasus was roomy enough for two people. " Please hold onto me. " The rider only gave half a second of warning before ordering her mount to lift off at full speed.
In two blinks of an eye they had left the warriors on foot far behind. " Smaller groups attract less attention and with Brigadier on our side even if we are seen we can lose any pursuers. " No matter how scared Serena was of heights this was much better than attempt to cross the bottomless canyon on foot.
Thee guards at the Nohrian checkpoint overlooking the Bottomless canyon had indeed been informed to allow passage to a black Pegasus. The Archers and ballista crews stood on standby as the two women flew over their fortified perimeter.
"Seeker will do just fine." The glacial spot replied. If aliases were going to be used, false titles would suffice.
She listened to the man's orders, taking every minute detail that she could and occasionally offering a question of her own. No doubt they were going into danger and Serena knew that the more you knew, the more you could exploit when things inevitably went wrong. Their plans could be as detailed as they like, but how often did they actually hold up?
Once the group was dismissed, the masked woman appeared at her side. Her ebony Pegasus lent towering height to Lilly. She showed no hesitance in mounting winged death. Her stomach was already falling, but the sensation would go ignored. In the face of combat, Serena held no notions of modesty. Those easily embarrassed or distracted, died. Arms wrapped around the rider's stomach, the seeker's thighs pressed into the Pegasus.
"It also gives us a better advantage!" Serena shouted over the wind. "Air support and all!"
Her voice died down. However, this time she kept her eyes open. If flying was going to become a common occurrence in her job, then she was going to have to learn to live with it.
" Seeker? hardly a match for your beauty but it will have to do." An Alias like Seeker wasn't classy enough to be match for this ice queen. Letting her tongue loose and having a partner did wonders to ease Mitsuko's nerves as she flew over the border.
There was indeed a gap in the guard rotation o by the time they made it over to the other side no one had seen them. The mercenaries that had come behind them had missed their timing and weren't able to make the crossing.
" oh well! i'm not one to judge." In a matter of minutes they where in Hoshido, having left the darkness of the bottomless canyon behind the black Pegasus landed on a nearby forest. " That was one hell of a longshot, my friend." What they got away with was no easy feat, now it was only a matter of staying undercover and cause as much damage as possible. Prior to being sent there the girls had been promised to be paid by guild agents scattered across Hoshido.
" I still have the intention of continuing with my assignment. In this land nights only last about 12 hours or so so i'll wait until dark to attempt to infiltrate the province centers of government. I'll try and gather as much intel as possible. Information can fetch a high price in today's black market. " Now that they where in Hoshido Mitsuko was confident she could blend in more easily without the mask so she disposed of it.
" You seem like a smart and capable individual so how about we give each other hand? I wont boss you around and we can split our gains and expenses. Whatever is better for us in the long run." Even though they had agreed to watch each other backs Mitsuko was looking for an immediate business partner.
Serena scoffed at remarks of her beauty. "Sometimes you need to put a little bit of dignity. I guess I could have gone with Azure Sugartits, as they called me, but I didn't want to get too close to them."
The glacial scout was happier to land than he let out. Her hair was still wind ravaged and she could still feel her skin tingle at the sky's phantom touch. It was a momentous occasion. It was the first step that Serena had taken in Hoshido and she was here to lay ruin.
Serena was left with a bad taste in her mouth as Lilly spoke. The Black Market was just another word for Nohr. Even if they had nothing to do with each other, Garron would get his information from them. The seeker kept a neutral face. She wasn't going to reveal her displeasure. After all, there was a job to do. Maybe this market had information for her as well.
"Sounds like a plan." Serena said. "Infiltration might be difficult. Did you see the troops moving along the road? Both sides are sending their men somewhere. That could mean they're on higher alert, or they might not be paying much attention to their bases, but that's just wishful thinking."
The seeker moved to the nearest shaded bush and checked for prying ears. It seemed they were alone, save for whatever woodland creatures happened by.
"Are there any specific targets? Something we're going to need to be sure to get? I want to do a thorough job. But yes, I'm in."
" Its not like we're going to be infiltrating the army headquarters at the frontline. No matter how well we attempt to carry out the infiltration there's always Ninja's shadowing any major advances as counter intelligence operatives so they'll see us coming." Being a former junior officer Mitsuko knew a thing or two about the way the land forces operated. This was a profesional standing army which was highly disciplined. The two of them fared better avoiding a straight up confrontation.
" The Hoshidan government is mostly centralized so we'll find all the information we're looking for at the capital. My parents brought me to Hoshido a couple of times before the war so I know the way there. " It was imposible to miss the troop movement from the air and Mitsuko had no intention of getting anywhere near the mass mobilization. She'd gone to the military academy with some of those young officers so for her it would be like walking straight into the spider's web.
" All the roads lead to Shirasagi. The armories and grain mills are located there in the outskirts of the city to be inspected by government officials before being sent to the frontline. Imagine the chaos we will cause if we set their weapon and food supply ablaze. " From the looks of it Serena was more interested chasing after more high valuable targets. Of course, that in exchange for helping her out achieving that goal Mitsuko also expected something in return.
" There's a village a couple of hours away from here where we could await until nightfall to make haste towards the capital. If we are spotted by an army patrol here they'll definitely think we're suspicious." The main road which the army followed from the Capital to the border was mere miles away so there was a high chance for them to run into more soldiers. She'd only stopped here to make sure no one tried to follow them further and from the looks of it there where no signs somebody was trying to tail them.
