With the way things where going Akemi was more aware of her own mortality than ever before. After much meditation the green haired soldier decided to head back to her own village to talk to her family before embarking on a perilous journey to the Wolves lair. With her luggage in tow the girl left Kitsuki before sunrise to make good time. Before noon she'd arrived at the feet of the Eternal stairway and decided to sit down for a moment under the shade before making the climb.
It had been nearly five years since the last time she'd came this way nd the eroded steps looked how she remembered them. " I was lucky I survived that descent ... " Since no one else was around she was not afraid to speak her mind out. At a time like this she was worried about the type of reception she would receive from the other villagers but she couldn't simply not tell her direct family about her exploits in Hoshido, if anything it would at least ease their worry even if Akemi wasn't planning on coming back for good.
The young scholar's expression read quite simply of disinterest, as one of the two servants he had alongside him, pushed his wheelchair. He was reluctant to come here, but unfortunate as it may be, he was told there was an artifact he had to find. Even more unfortunately, that'd mean he had to go up a long long set of stairs, which to be quite frank, would be a pain for him. One of his servants would most certainly have to carry him.
He heard a quiet voice, that seemed to grow as he got closer. His eyes examined the person through his peripheral, he let out a sigh, as he reached the steps. He certainly hoped this person wouldn't come along as well, on the way up.
He remained blankfaced, as one of his servants picked him out of the wheel chair, and the other picked up the wheelchair, and they started walking upward. "Be careful, I'd rather not gain more bruises." His voice said, with no sign of emotion, to his servant.
How strange, though Akemi upon seeing these obviously foreign travelers to have come all the way to the feet of the Eternal Stairway carrying a man on a wheel chair. " The way up can be treacherous beyond belief, Travelers. Many people who tried to reach the top rarely live to tell the tale." Truth to be told she was quite certain these three would be incapable of making the climb, especially when carrying that peculiar disabled young man around.
" I made a descent years ago when I was in better shape and even then it nearly cost me my life. If there's anything you should require from the wind tribe up ahead I might be able to help. Trinkets are not worth losing life and limb for." These people weren't enemies so she tried to be kind to them and save them the effort of going all the way up there only to die.
Asinine's head didn't even crane her way, despite the interesting words. Offering help, a rather foolish thing, that people guided by useless feelings oh so commonly did. This was of course beneficial to the mage, as he had absolutely no desire to do more work than necessary.
"I'm looking for a special book, that's said to be present within this mountain. It sounds as though it speaks more indepths of a mysterious race... Taguels, I believe?" He stated with an ever so casual tone, before the servant holding him, turned to face her. "Can you be of assistance? Rest assured, I don't desire free help."
" Oh ... " There was something slightly off putting in the way this disabled man spoke to her. The Wind Tribe might have lived in isolation but they had a vast amount of knowledge stored on their archives. Akemi had been a rather studious young lady so she instantly knew that particular tom he was talking about. The book didn't only contain information about Taguels but also many other shape shifting creatures.
" So its a book you're looking for ... I happen to know where to find it, however no one is allowed to take the books away fro the archives. Foreigners such as yourself are more than welcome to set foot in it and consult the sources. " The girl spoke truthfully to these weary looking travelers.
Asinine was slightly disappointed at this news, yet it was increasingly hard to see. Despite his speed when it came to reading, no doubt would he have to remain for quite some time... A depressing thought, due to the doubt he had regarding this village. It had to be unlikely for them to have cake, and he was unwilling to really eat anything aside from what meets his preference.
"Hmm... Such a bother..." He mumbled to himself, before focusing his eyes upon the lady. "Could you lead me there?" Unfortunately he had a dreaded assignment to read whatever this book was... What an absolute depressing fate awaited him.
" You can pay me by inviting me to have supper. you guys are travelers so you definitely have to try the local specialties." Akemi was going to get something out of playing tour guide even if it wasn't her intention to take advantage of them. Now that it was all said and agreed the girl stood up from her shady spot, dusting herself off and walking up to the group, guiding them over to the parts where the steps could still hold a person's weight.
" Here in a minute we'll come across some guards so if you people have something you don't want them to see leave it behind. " AN hour into the climbing they indeed came across a group of four soldiers who had set up camp.
" Good afternoon fellows. Hey! is that you, Kyosuke? its been a while, hasn't it. " The green haired girl approached the group recognizing most of them from her childhood.
These guards ran up to her not believing that this was the day they would talk to Akemi again. " We thought you weren't coming back, Kihara. Have you finally made up your mind and decided to come back with us? " Asked the senior of the group, directing its gaze to her current ' companions'.
" I've come to visit my parents and nothing else. i'll be staying for a day or two so when you guys are over with your shift you can come visit me. " After a brief exchange she convinced them that this group of Nohrians where with her so they where given access to continue their climb into the village.
Supper? Asinine didn't exactly care too much, but no doubt that'd force his presence to remain longer than he already intended to... He analyzed the situation for a way out, however ultimately decided that he'd find a way to get her a meal, and not have to eat as well, when the time came. "Very well." He responded, void of any expressiveness, as his servants followed along, carrying him alongside them.
The random group of guards didn't faze the young man whatsoever, he didn't desire a battle and as such he didn't even spare them a glance, as he waited for the lady to resume her lead he remained deathly still. As they continued trotting upwards.
"Is that your name? Kyosuke?" The young man said ever so plainly, as he continued being carried as though he was a rag doll.
" Don't worry about these fellas here. they are scholars who have come to research the archives. " It was thanks to Akemi that the group was allowed the right of passage without paying a fee or being checked.
The male guard heard this person who was being given a piggy back ride call out for his name. " That's me. Would you require any further assistance? "
Akemi was wondering what sort of business this disabled scholar had, establishing a conversation with the guard. Maybe he was curious about the Geography or something.
"Would you be able to give a rough estimate of how long it'd take to reach the top?" Asinine stated plainly, his voice shrouded with disinterest, as it remained steady. Naturally the people who are consistently here, would have a better estimate.
He honestly wanted to get this done with quickly, the search for knowledge was an aggravatingly dull one, he had but one desire, to stay home and do nothing, but look at his dolls.
"If only I could simply fly up there." He muttered under his breath.
" About an hour and a half if you guys pick up the pace." Kyosuke answered quite truthfully. This place wasn't called the Eternal Stairway for nothing.
" There's no use getting hasty. That's how most people get killed trying to make this climb, we gotta watch our step the closest we get to the village entrance. " Akemi continued feeling like explaining the risks at hand on this last stretch of the road. If anyone of these travelers died here while she was their guide it would leave a really bad taste on her mouth.
Two hours of agonizing climb later ...
Since she was the guide Akemi went on ahead, using her club to gauge the steps before laying down a path for the others to follow. The closest they got to the village the more treacherous the steps became and some even collapsed under their weight causing minor set backs. Finally the village was in sight.
" We ... made it at last. wasn't that fun? " The green haired girl was exhausted to say the least so much she simply sat down on a rock not caring it was rather hot after being exposed to sunlight for a good portion of the day. She could finally rest her legs so getting a slight tan was a non issue.
Asinine sighed in sheer annoyance, every time someone tried to make him take longer, it couldn't help but annoy him to no end. He was like a petulant child, despite the lack of much emotions to appear upon his face. "Whatever... Let's proceed..." The young man muttered, as they went on their climb.
As they had finally reached the top, the young mage speaking barely at all throughout the way, the lady began to talk. "Fun? I don't honestly care, what use is such a thing anyway?" He replied with a slightly condescending glance, before glaring at his servants. "You may rest here, till our... 'Guide', can show us where we are to go next... Did you want supper first, or can you lead me to the archives first?"
" Good idea! Sitting down under the shade is exactly what we need. " The seasonal wind that ran through these mountains was slightly refreshing. Akemi ha been focusing too much on following the right path to pay any attention to the moody young scholar being carried on the poor servants back. ' I sure hope these guys are getting paid enough for their troubles. ' Akemi didn't certainly envy them on their task. After a deep breather she got back up in her feet, ready to move on.
The people from the Wind Tribe where relatively friendly, offering them water. Most of them recognized Akemi expressing their surprise in seeing her again after such a long time. This was a really small village so everyone knew each other.
She showed them the way to the humble archives where they where greeted at the entrance by a monk. " Would you require any scrolls or ink to make annotations? " The knowledge contained within these walls was made available to everyone in the tribe so keeping this girl around had its perks.
