"Before the fall of the fort, the evenings were filled with handsome young soldiers from the capital. They complained often about how boring the patrols were, and boasted readily that the town was safe from invaders. You couldn't help but believe them with how long the fort has stood against enemy attack... not to mention that Queen Mikoto was still around to protect the land borders with the barrier.
The fall was yet to happen. We were at peace even at the foot of the enemy land.
My inn was visited well, particularly because we were a beautiful, all-female staff..."
"Kanpai!"
Four young soldiers at a low sitting table knocked their heads back as atsukan drifted down their throats. The small clay cups tapped back on the table almost in unison, followed with the light laughter of the revelers.
"Those Nohrian kisama don't even have the will to fight when they pass through the barrier," one of them complained, "Why should we even be watching?"
Another sitting by him, a more mature-looking fellow, slapped him in the back of the head, "Fool! It's our duty to Queen Mikoto to protect the land border. Even if those 'kisama' attempt to walk through it, you don't think they'd try to find a way around it?"
"Yes," an intelligent soldier nodded his head, "Lately they have been sending those... abominations instead. Monsters without feelings of empathy. Even though they often wander into the canyon, one of these days, they'll make them smart enough to walk across the bridges." His finger jabbed down on the table, "That's why we're here: to keep those disgusting freaks from attacking innocent civilians."
"Ne? You fellows talking about those humanoid things?"
The four looked over to a delicate and attractive woman leaning against the doorway to the kitchen. Clad in a lavender kimono with her hair tied up with a green ribbon, and with the gentle, yet lively gait, she was like a lily swaying in the grassy fields of Hoshido.
"Watanabe-san," said the mature soldier with a mild wave of his hand, "It really is none of your business."
"Fufufu... whatever is spoken in my inn that perks my ears is something worth sharing."
The soldiers glanced between each other and shrugged their shoulders. "It's confidential. Sorry, Watanabe-san..."
"Boo," the woman muttered. She reached down and plucked a half-full bottle of hot sake from the table from in front of the mature soldier, "In that case, I'll just take this, ne?"
"Heeeey...!" the soldier whined as he leaned with his hand outstretched toward the bottle, "That's not fair, Watanabe-san..."
However, she simply wiggled the sake bottle in the air, "C'mon now. We're all concerned about any threats on the border. If anything, we local folk should know about any impending dangers that endanger us."
"How about..." the soldier replied with a raised eyebrow, "... you let us soldiers deal with threats? That's kind of why we're here, you know?"
With a puff of her cheeks, the woman gave him a demure glare before spinning the sake bottle back onto the table. The soldier, wide-eyed, dove his hands upon the table to catch the bottle.
"So stingy!" remarked the woman as she proceeded to her seat behind the front counter, "I should refuse you next time for keeping important things from me, ne?!" With that, she folded her arms and slumped forward onto the table before her.
One of the girls working at the inn back then was 16 year old Akemi, her Kimono was green in the same tone as the innkeeper and her long green hair was tied up in a ponytail by a delicate black string
Being from the Wind Tribe she wasn't really familiarized with the customs of the people from outside her village even if they all spoke the same language. Out of all the female staff Akemi stood out like an odd duck, she wasn't as talkative as the others though this didn't keep some of the male patrons from flirting with her from time to time only be put off by her cold and distant treatment.
For the green haired girl this was a rather simple job. All she had to do was show up at the tables and take orders so she never really attempted to get personally attached to the clientele. Akemi would much rather spend her time cleaning up the rooms but that wasn't her sole task at the inn.
In the evenings a lot of soldiers from the fort showed up so all the tables where occupied which meant Akemi had to look over more than a few all by herself. While not the warmest waitress she was attentive, giving the best possible service to the patrons even if those pretty lips of hers remained either tightly shut or with the faintest of smiles if anything it was much more interesting for her to listen to the constant banter between soldiers.
Quietly she went from table to table, handing out bills, picking up empty bottles and pouring more ' refreshments' to the different patrons ranging from hot tea to room temperature sake.

The innkeeper looked up from her desk and watched as light footsteps moved about the tavern. Ah, the pleasant Akemi, pilgrim from the Wind Tribe. For her age, she was considered a gem of the inn, not to mention of marriageable by the standards of Hoshidans.
That is, the innkeeper, while well-versed in the culture of the Wind Tribe, would vehemently prohibit the soldiers from touching Akemi. She knew too little of Hoshidan culture, let alone how men think.
Of course, more on the minds of the soldiers was the strength of Raven's Rest's powerful innkeeper, Mai Watanabe. The last fool who had attempted to lecherously touch Satsuki, another waitress of the inn, was quickly given painful shock punishment.
As such, the inn was a safe haven of sorts for women.
"Kihara-san, Kihara-san," Mai called the girl with a hand beckoning in the air, "Come here, would you? I need a favor."

The Samurai class was a complete mystery for the young Akemi. The idea of having a social class dedicated entirely to the martial practices was fascinating because it was at odds with some of her own tribe traditions and since many of their patrons where officers at the fort she could learn more about their way of life. Some of these men sure couldn't help but talk on and on after having a few cups of sake.
" What can I do for you, Watanabe-san? " Akemi was about done serving a large order of fried pork to some officers from the fort when the inn keeper called for her. The girl politely bowed upon walking up to Mai. She might have been a little aloof but Akemi didn't lack any manners especially when addressing the person who employed her services.

Mai motioned her hand for the girl to bring her face closer to hers, and in a whispering tone spoke.
"Listen, Kihara-san... I'd like it if you could eavesdrop on those soldier's conversation..." her eyes made a subtle suggestion toward the four soldiers sitting at the low table, "I came up with a scenario... it's a little daring, but they'll pass you off better since you're a cuter than I am." Her right eye winked, "Don't worry, I won't let them touch you. Just find out what they're hiding from us, okay?" She linked her fingers together and sat up straight, "What's that? You're of marriageable age, Kihara-san? My, my!" She placed her hand on her right cheek, "Maa~, to be young..."
Some ears, particularly of the table of the soldiers, lifted at the sound of the announcement.
" You can count on me, Watanabe-san. " Akemi was not embarrassed about serving a table full of drunk army officers but her face turned red when Mai talked about marriage. The idea had never really crossed Akemi's mind but what was more embarrassing was Mai making her age public.
In a hurry the younger girl moved away from Mai's grasp, going over behind the counter to get a fresh bottle of sake. " The innkeeper has sent me here to offer you gentlemen some sake has an apology. i'm here to serve you so if there's anything you should require please let me know." There was only one way she knew how to loosen a mans tongue and it involved pouring each one of them a drink on the house.

The cherry-faced commander looked at the young woman with soft eyes, "Oh... ah, well... that's... that's pretty kind of you, Watanabe-san!" He squinted briefly, "Oh, you're not... oh."
"Haha! Commander, you couldn't be that drunk!" the younger soldier laughed and slapped his knee.
"Fufu, after all this atsukan I suppose..." the matured soldier scratched the back of his head gingerly.
Mai lifted a book to her face and pretended to read it.
"... Hey, Kihara-san," the intelligent soldier spoke, "What is your age? You look very young." Akemi

" its rude to ask a Lady her age." There was no denying they had all heard how old she was when Mai practically yelled it earlier.
" Come on, fellas there's no need to be so formal you can all call me Akemi-chan. " With a fake smile she thought how to get back at Mai for putting her in this awkward situation. Akemi deep down wished she was cleaning latrines or vomit rather than dealing with these drunk soldiers.
" If there isn't anything else I can do for you i'm just going to leave this bottle here but I remind you that if there's anything else you need give me a call. " If she was around then it was easy to deduce they would be less than eager to discuss those matters that Mai so desperately wanted to over heard so she decided to go over an empty table to pretend like she was cleaning it up.

The soldiers gave the intelligent one a jokingly disparaging look, "Real smooth, Takeo!" They, excluding the blushing intuitive one, burst out into laughter.
Mai let out a defeated sigh. Really, Kihara... you lack so much in the realm of charisma. If she had mentioned her age, it might've incited more interest! If she were her, she would've rode the thought along and wrap them around her finger until she got what she wanted.
Alas, she was a girl from the Wind Tribe, and no one there was trained on how to play coy.
"Ku...!" the innkeeper slapped her book closed and beckoned the girl to approach her again, "Kihara-san, Kihara-san." Akemi

Every now and then Akemi would glance over the innkeeper noticing what seemed like a hint of disappointment on that pretty face of hers. Mai was the type of woman who wore her heart on her sleeve and while facetious at times it was easy to tell she wasn't particularly pleased with how Akemi talked to those men. It wasn't that she wasn't interested in the opposite sex but after gaining a degree of independence from her tribe Akemi was definitely not interested in losing whatever autonomy she had left by looking for a husband and getting together.
" Is something the matter, Watanabe-san? " Once again the younger girl approached, bowing her head politely after answering the inn keeper call.

Once she was within whispering earshot, Mai spoke to her again, "... I think it's time for us to make an understanding. When I set things up for you, I am expecting you to go along with it!" The woman's hands raised in the air as she shook her head, "Shame, too, 'cause I was imagining what kind of reward I would give you if you were successful. A break, a foot massage, maybe even a raise... sigh!"
Her body turned toward the wall as she placed her book on a shelf behind her, "No matter. I will work with your strengths instead..."
Suddenly, a soldier came barreling down the path and into the inn with a sweating face.
"Commander!" he exclaimed, "One... one of those creatures is coming across the bridge!"
The blushing commander looked up in shock, "H... hah?! Those Faceless are breaching?!"
"Yes, sir! By the time I left to report, it had already gone halfway across the bridge!"
The report caused the tavern to light up in murmurs.
"A... face... less?" "Is that what they're called?" "We should go see what it looks like!"
In that instant, customers suddenly rose from their seats and began an exodus to the bridge.
"No! W-wait!" the commander stumbled on his feet in futility, "Don't go out there, it's too dangerous...!"
Mai placed her hand on her chin and looked to the girl with a raised eyebrow, "Hmm... get that club of yours, Kihara-san. This might be troublesome." On the same note, she reached for her old Fire Tome and slid it into her obi. She rose from her spot and beckoned for the girl to follow. Akemi

While the prospect of getting some kind of reward was nice it was never Akemi's intention to gain something out of it. Her lack of tact handling the situation caused Mai to express a certain degree of disappointment which also hurt the younger girl pride. " I'm sorry, Watanabe-san. I promise I wont let you down next time ... " It was easy to tell she wasn't particularly proud of herself betraying her employer expectations.
All of a sudden most of the men at the inn stood up from their seats, rushing outside while their commanders scrambled in an attempt to sober up in the face of adversity. ' What is she trying to do? ' Akemi was baffled when Mai expressed interest in taking a look at whatever was coming their way. One thing was for certain judging on the reaction of most of the soldiers and that was an impending feeling of danger.
Nevertheless Akemi was not going to disappoint the inn keeper a second time today. With a nod she went over the counter, grabbing a large brass club she kept in handy whenever particularly intoxicated patrons felt like acting rowdy. " Right behind you, Watanabe-san." She followed Mai outside noticing the tome the older woman kept hidden away.
Normally, Akemi would have agreed with the commander but she was partially to blame for getting so many soldiers rather wasted. If they fell in battle due to their numb state then she would be partially to blame.

The two of them proceeded forth from the inn to where the bridge, about a five minute walk, to where a small gathering of villagers accumulated. There was the Bottomless Canyon and the bridge.
"Keep back! Everyone stay back!"
"Is that it?" "How horrible!"
Given her height over the regular populace, Mai had no trouble looking over the tops of their heads. There it was... a pale, muscular abomination with stitches running along its entire body, donning little but metal strappings and an intimidating iron mask. It moved slowly, and what soldiers were present retreated back at its every move with their spears held out to the monstrosity.
"An abomination to be sure," said the innkeeper with a furrowed brow, "Truly the masterminds behind this creature seek to bring ruin to Hoshido if they're willing to make monsters like this..."
Suddenly, the monster let out an anguished cry and charged for one of the soldiers. With one swipe, the soldier was blown back into the crowd. In that instant, the villagers began to flee in panic. Mai gripped her tome as she began to step back, "... It's strong, isn't it..."

The moment Akemi laid eyes on the creature she stopped thinking rationally. Fear and confusion took a firm hold of her senses. More than enough to cause her to look away, paralyzed by a feeling of dread.
" W-what is that creature? " Such monstrosity was unnatural, this abomination had been created to instill fear in the heart of all living creatures. Even these hardened Samurai's where shaking on their feet as they tried to keep the creature at bay. Every now and then Akemi would stumble with words trying to adapt her accent but this time she was outright stuttering like a child put in a difficult situation.
Against the artificial beast Akemi with her silly club simply stood no chance on the slightest. It was that acknowledgement of her own fragility what she feared the most. " I don't think i'll be able to sleep tonight. " The once proud girl wasn't even joking. Her hair stood on end and she'd gotten jittery all over. The faceless was so hideously deformed it would be near imposible to forget.

"Ku..." Mai's brow furrowed as she prepared her tome, "I won't have this brute threaten MY town!" With sudden resolve, she opened her tome and aimed at the beast. "Run if you must, Kihara-san. I won't hold it against you if you would rather treasure your life."
