His stomach managed to growl once again. It had convenient timing. "There is no harm in getting a bit of work done first," he told her. "Some food sounds wonderful." Raziel wasn't a picky eater. Heck, the man would eat anything people considered food. Meat dumplings sounded like a local delicacy which Raziel was more than willing to partake in. He followed her to the kitchen, placing the wood down beside the pot.

The kitchen of the Raven's Rest was a little bigger, enough to accommodate two to three chefs at one time. That said, the food was more delicious than what the townsfolk typically had for themselves as a result of Mai's vast knowledge of local delicacies.
In the corner of the room were several tall stacks of cylindrical bamboo containers.
"You're lucky, you know," said Mai with a cheeky grin, "the dumplings in Raven's Rest are a specialty of mine, and are very, very popular with the local folk." She approached the stacks and took one from off the top. The container was placed atop a pot filled with water, and the innkeeper knelt down by the cooking stove and threw some of the logs Raziel had cut down. With a little finesse, she managed a sizable fire, and in time steam rose from the pot and penetrated the bamboo container.
"Have you ever tried dumplings, Raziel-san?" the woman asked as she watched the steam rise from the bamboo. Raziel

It was a very strange setup. Raziel hadn't seen such an elaborate setup in a kitchen before. All of the bamboo clearly reflected the surrounding area. Raziel moved closers to the inn keeper and peered over her shoulder to clearly see what was going on in the pot. "I haven't had a dumpling like this before," the food looked familiar to something he remembered from his past a very long time ago. A warmth settled in the pit of his stomach as he thought of his old tribe. "At home we had something similar. We called them shushbarak."

"Shushbarak..." Mai repeated, she nodded her head, "What an exotic name! I'm sure it tastes delicious." Perhaps if time and opportunity permitted, she would learn the recipe and try to recreate it. One day...
That said, he made mention of his home. As a person who enjoys international travel, Mai wouldn't pass up the opportunity to ask about his homeland. Maybe she could ask in the midst of his meal...
Naturally, the dumplings were finished steaming, thus Mai removed the cover from the container and put them on a tray, which she then took to the dining room. She placed the container on one of the placemats, then proceeded to sit on the cushion.
The man followed to the dining room and politely took his place on a cushion in the room. It struck him a bit strange that dining here would be so close to how it had been at home, as he remembered it so many years ago. He closed his eyes for a moment to thank his ancestors for the ability to enjoy this meal, and took a bite. And another. As polite as Raziel was, the man did have a big appetite.

"Fufun! You sure eat well," Mai shown a bright smile as she observed him. However, the smile disappeared as she glanced at the table--she had neglected to serve tea!
While she hoped he hadn't noticed, it was unacceptable for a host to not offer it.
"Excuse me for a moment," she said beneath her breath as she calmly got back on her feet. She quickly scooted over to the kitchen once more, and in a few minutes time she came back out with a flat, dark-colored teapot with a diagonal spout and a couple teacups. "I apologize, Raziel-san, but I had almost forgotten the tea. Allow me to pour you some." Raziel

The man held his hand up in an attempt to stop the woman, but he actually made little effort to stop her from pouring tea. "Watanade-san. You've been most hospitable. Please, allow yourself a bit of rest." He motioned to the cushion beside him and pushed a few of the dumplings her way. "It is very peaceful here," he told her. The man lifted the tea to his lips and calmly took a sip from it.

Mai smiled and bowed (or more or less tilted her body slightly) in his direction as she took her own tea cup, "Fufun, it's the least I can do for the help you've given today, Raziel -san." She daintily picked up her own tea cup and lifted it to her lips, then gave it a short slurp.
Ahh...
"It has been peaceful, yes," she replied with a content look, "I'll have you know that there haven't been any rabblerousing brigands for a while now, that is, ever since we've taught a group of them a lesson in our justice system." She cleared her throat, "Ah, but that's a story for another day, isn't it..."

He had hardly done anything for her. In time, Watanabe-san may come to understand. She worked too hard. Brigands? He raised a brow at that. He hadn't heard any stories about that lately. But Raziel had wandered into this town just this morning. "What is today but another day?" Raziel asked, he simply took another sip from his tea. "There is no day like the present, Watanabe-san. I could do for a story. Please, enlighten me."

"Fumu..." Mai put the crook of her index finger on her lips and furrowed her eyebrows, "... well, if you really want to know..." She moved her legs so to lean off of the cushion, "It started... perhaps a few weeks ago when four bandits came into town to deal business. We put up with it as they were better armed than we were, and we didn't want any unnecessary blood to be spilt." A sigh escaped her lips, "But I steadily grew impatient with them. They rented out all the rooms in my inn at one point and made an utter mess of this place, and they chased away any other business I could've gotten. They always left during the day to cause trouble on the road and make people pay unnecessary tolls, then afterwards come back and get drunk and say crass things to me. Ugh."
Her tone changed at the turn of the story, "But then one day a wanderer like yourself appeared. With his help, he and I... ah... incapacitated two of the bandits. Two others ran off into the night, but I'm not sure where they went off to." She tilted her head to the side and exhaled once more, "As peaceful as it is, I hope this doesn't turn around and try to bite back at me. Such a pain..." Raziel

Raziel listened to the woman's story and nodded his head at all the details she had to say. He had the time to listen and to take in every bit of information she had to offer. Her story was impressive. "It sounds like it would take a fool to mess with Watanabe-san. It takes a very strong woman to take on two bandits. Even with the help of a traveler, it sounds very impressive." She was really lucky to have somebody help her out like that. This traveler must not have been so different from Raziel. "Let us hope that this peace does indeed continue."

"Fufufu!" Mai giggled with her hand over her mouth, "That's right. I wouldn't let people do as they pleased outside of reason." She turned her head to the doorway and exhaled, "I certainly hope we get less trouble in these coming days..."
As she stared out the door, she watched a man pass by with a sack of rice on his shoulder. Old man Yamato. He was still working even at his age...
Mai's face suddenly brightened as she sat back up, "Raziel-san! What do you think of being my heavy-duty worker? It'll be a kind of strenuous, but I'm sure a handsome someone of your strength would be able to manage~."

Raziel too had caught the body of the old man who walked through the halls with the rice on his shoulders. He had been about to get up to help when Watanade-san spoke to him. "A heavy-duty worker?" He rubbed at his chin. That sounded like a much more permanent position here at the inn. He couldn't stay tied down for too long. When the time came, Raziel would simply disappear in the middle of the night and move on to his next adventure. "That sounds like something for more than a simple traveler, that it does. But I can help Watanade-san until she finds a replacement."

"Fufun," Mai crossed her arms with a proud look on her face, "That's fine, Raziel-san. You're only staying for three days, after all." She had two or three hirelings at a time, with a few part-timers to help with other work. "After you leave, I can ask someone else to help! Easily fixed." She reached for her teacup and sipped from it once again, "Be faithful with little, and maybe you leave with a lot!"

He was happy to hear she had thought through this ahead of time. It would be a pity to disappoint her. Now he didn't have to. "Then you have yourself a deal, Watanabe-san." The man stuck his hand out in order to seal the arrangement with a shake of his hand. "For three days, I shall be your errand boy."
